| 1 | Variability in the composition and export of silica in the Huanghe River Basin显示文摘Concentrations of suspended particle material(SPM), dissolved silicate(DSi), biogenic silica(BSi), phytoliths(plant produced siliceous microscopic structures), and other parameters were analyzed to examine the influence of both natural processes and human activities on silica delivery to the estuary of the Huanghe River(Yellow River). Our results indicate that the concentrations of DSi in the river decreased significantly since 1986. Approximately 34% of dissolved silica was trapped in the basin between 1986 and 2010 due to a reduction of soil erosion. Phytoliths comprised 67.2%–96.3% of BSi, with the smoothing bar type being the dominant form. Concentrations of BSi are significantly higher in the Huanghe River compared to other major rivers throughout the world due to its high sediment yield. We also found that the ratios of BSi/(BSi+DSi) and BSi/SPM were approximately 0.5 and 0.003 at Lijin near the river mouth, indicating that BSi carried in suspension by the Huanghe River was an important component of the rivers silica load. Significant amounts of BSi were also composed of phytoliths in Bohai Sea sediments near the Huanghe River estuary with the smoothing bar form again being the most abundant. The relatively high specific fluxes of BSi in the Huanghe River reflect its high turbidity and high erosion rates in the basin. The high sediment load originating on the Loess Plateau is likely responsible for the higher BSi flux, in agreement with a general trend of increasing BSi flux with increasing sediment flux in global river systems. This study demonstrates that BSi transported by rivers can be composed largely of phytoliths originating from the erosion of topsoils. | 2 | A Genome Sequence of Novel SARS-CoV Isolates: the Genotype, GD-Ins29, Leads to a Hypothesis of Viral Transmission in South China显示文摘We report a complete genomic sequence of rare isolates (minor genotype) of theSARS-CoV from SARS patients in Guangdong, China, where the first few casesemerged. The most striking discovery from the isolate is an extra 29-nucleotidesequence located at the nucleotide positions between 27,863 and 27,864 (referredto the complete sequence of B J01) within an overlapped region composed of BGI-PUP5 (BGI-postulated uncharacterized protein 5) and BGI-PUP6 upstream ofthe N (nucleocapsid) protein. The discovery of this minor genotype, GD-Ins29,suggests a significant genetic event and differentiates it from the previously re-ported genotype, the dominant form among all sequenced SARS-CoV isolates. A17-nt segment of this extra sequence is identical to a segment of the same size intwo human mRNA sequences that may interfere with viral genome replication andtranscription in the cytosol of the infected cells. | 3 | Response of the sediment geochemistry of the Changjiang River(Yangtze River) to the impoundment of the Three Gorges Dam显示文摘Based on the measurement of major and trace elements in suspended sediments in the low reaches of the Changjiang River during throughout a whole hydrologic year, the origins, seasonal variations, and fluxes of multielements and the human impacts on multielements transport processes have been analyzed along with the influence of weathering in the Changjiang River basin. The results show that most element contents were high in both autumn and winter and low in summer, which was largely caused by the dilution of discharge. Weathering detritus in the Changjiang River basin is the main source of most elements in suspended sediments. However, riverine pollution could bring more loadings of Cd, Pb, As and Zn into river water than it did a few decades ago. The annual average fluxes of Cd, Pb and Zn, which are major contamination elements, to the sea were 179 ± 21 tons/year, 7810 ± 675 tons/year, and 12,000 ± 1320 tons/year,respectively, in which approximately 8.7%, 11.9% and 2.7% of their loadings, respectively,were contributed by pollution inputs. Element exports mainly occurred in the summer(44.4%–57.4%) in the lower part of the Changjiang River. A general relationship between sediment retention and element content suggests a positive feedback mechanism for the decreased number of particles, in which element riverine loadings are reduced due to the enhanced trapping effect by the Three Gorges Dam(TGD). | 4 | The Structural Characterization and Antigenicity of the S Protein of SARS-CoV显示文摘The corona-like spikes or peplomers on the surface of the virion under electronicmicroscope are the most striking features of coronaviruses. The S (spike) proteinis the largest structural protein, with 1,255 amino acids, in the viral genome. Itsstructure can be divided into three regions: a long N-terminal region in the exte-rior, a characteristic transmembrane (TM) region, and a short C-terminus in theinterior of a virion. We detected fifteen substitutions of nucleotides by comparisonswith the seventeen published SARS-CoV genome sequences, eight (53.3%) of whichare non-synonymous mutations leading to amino acid alternations with predictedphysiochemical changes. The possible antigenic determinants of the S protein arepredicted, and the result is confirmed by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbentassay) with synthesized peptides. Another profound finding is that three disulfidebonds are defined at the C-terminus with the N-terminus of the E (envelope) pro-tein, based on the typical sequence and positions, thus establishing the structuralconnection with these two important structural proteins, if confirmed. | 5 | Estimating global prevalence,incidence,and outcomes of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease from 2000 to 2021:systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘Background:The increasing burden of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)worldwide imposes an emerging public health issue.We perform the current study to estimate the global prevalence,incidence,disease progression,and clinical outcomes of NAFLD.Methods:A systematic search was conducted in Medline,Embase,Web of Science,Google Scholar,and Cochrane CENTRAL that screened articles in English language published from January 2000 to December 2021.NAFLD prevalence,incidence,rate of disease progression,and outcomes were calculated with the DerSimonian-Laird random effects model with arcsine transformation.Results:Our search identified 59,156 records,of which 578 studies fulfilled our inclusion criteria.The overall prevalence of NAFLD was 29.38%(95%confidence interval[CI]28.09-30.69)regardless of the diagnostic techniques.Looking at the group in which the diagnosis was made by ultrasound exclusively,the pooled prevalence was 30.49%(95%CI 29.55-31.43).NAFLD has become more prevalent during the year 2011-2021(31.63%,95%CI 30.23-33.04)compared with year 2000-2010(27.94%,95%CI 26.23-29.69).The pooled estimation of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis prevalence was 8.26%(95%CI 1.13-21.01),46.49%(95%CI 35.93-57.20),and 46.72%(95%CI 37.57-55.98)in general population,NAFLD patients,and severe/morbidly obese patients,respectively.Based on a total of 110,142 newly developed NAFLD patients,the pooled incident rate was estimated as 46.24 cases per 1000 person-years(95%CI 43.21-49.30).In patients with NAFLD,the incident rate of hepatocellular carcinoma was 1.46(95%CI 0.90-2.03)cases per 1000 person-years.The overall pooled estimate of NAFLD related mortality was 23.91(95%CI 13.55-37.18)death per 1000 person-years.Conclusions:The prevalence of NAFLD is increasing globally.It is contributing to poor clinical outcomes including hepatocellular carcinoma and death.Rising awareness and urgent actions are warranted to control the NAFLD pandemic across the globe.Registration:PROSPERO,No.CRD42020171104. | Jiaye Liu Ye Tian Xia Fu Chunyang Mu Menglin Yao Yinyun Ni Yong Liu Zhihui Li | 2022 | Chinese Medical Journal2022,,14: | 4 |

| 9 | The biogenic silica composition, behavior and budget in the Changjiang Estuary显示文摘Three comprehensive surveys were performed in the Changjiang(Yangtze River) Estuary(CJE) to understand the biogenic silica(BSi) composition, behavior and budget. It is indicated that the BSi is composed of phytoliths,phytoplankton and sponges; phytolith BSi has 16 forms and account for 23% to 83% of the bulk BSi in the maximum turbidity zone. The budget shows that the major exogenous BSi source in the water column of the CJE is the riverine input, accounting for 95% of the total BSi input. Dominant processes that maintain BSi levels in the water column are the primary production(55 Gmol/a) and the subsequent BSi sedimentation(46 Gmol/a); and the BSi pool produced by the primary production represents two point three times the BSi loading of the Changjiang River and 63% of the BSi output, respectively. The net export(26 Gmol/a) of BSi from the CJE to the East China Sea and Yellow Sea roughly equals the riverine BSi loading. The observed total accumulation of BSi is one point seven times larger than the loading of total BSi output, with 53% to 88% of phytolith BSi and their assemblage, indicating that there has already been a 'filter' of terrestrial BSi. The reverse weathering in sediments is an important process for the reactive silica removal in the CJE due to authigenic alterations. | 10 | The Structure Analysis and Antigenicity Study of the N Protein of SARS-CoV显示文摘The Coronaviridae family is characterized by a nucleocapsid that is composed of thegenome RNA molecule in combination with the nucleoprotein (N protein) withina virion. The most striking physiochemical feature of the N protein of SARS-CoVis that it is a typical basic protein with a high predicted pI and high hydrophilicity,which is consistent with its function of binding to the ribophosphate backbone ofthe RNA molecule. The predicted high extent of phosphorylation of the N proteinon multiple candidate phosphorylation sites demonstrates that it would be relatedto important functions, such as RNA-binding and localization to the nucleolus ofhost cells. Subsequent study shows that there is an SR-rich region in the N proteinand this region might be involved in the protein-protein interaction. The abundantantigenic sites predicted in the N protein, as well as experimental evidence withsynthesized polypeptides, indicate that the N protein is one of the major antigensof the SARS-CoV. | 11 | Fast Image Segmentation Algorithm Based on Salient Features Model and Spatial-frequency Domain Adaptive Kernel显示文摘A fast image segmentation algorithm based on salient features model and spatial-frequency domain adaptive kernel is proposed to solve the accurate discriminate objects problem of online visual detection in such scenes of variable sample morphological characteristics,low contrast and complex background texture.Firstly,by analyzing the spectral component distribution and spatial contour feature of the image,a salient feature model is established in spatial-frequency domain.Then,the salient object detection method based on Gaussian band-pass filter and the design criterion of adaptive convolution kernel are proposed to extract the salient contour feature of the target in spatial and frequency domain.Finally,the selection and growth rules of seed points are improved by integrating the gray level and contour features of the target,and the target is segmented by seeded region growing.Experiments have been performed on Berkeley Segmentation Data Set,as well as sample images of online detection,to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm.The experimental results show that the Jaccard Similarity Coefficient of the segmentation is more than 90%,which indicates that the proposed algorithm can availably extract the target feature information,suppress the background texture and resist noise interference.Besides,the Hausdorff Distance of the segmentation is less than 10,which infers that the proposed algorithm obtains a high evaluation on the target contour preservation.The experimental results also show that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the operation efficiency while obtaining comparable segmentation performance over other algorithms. | WU Fupei LIANG Jiaye LI Shengping | 2022 | Instrumentation2022,9,2: | 3 |
| 12 | The E Protein Is a Multifunctional Membrane Protein of SARS-CoV显示文摘The E (envelope) protein is the smallest structural protein in all coronaviruses andis the only viral structural protein in which no variation has been detected. Weconducted genome sequencing and phylogenetic analyses of SARS-CoV. Based ongenome sequencing, we predicted the E protein is a transmembrane (TM) pro-tein characterized by a TM region with strong hydrophobicity and α-helix con-formation. We identified a segment (NH2-_L-Cys-A-Y-Cys-Cys-N_-COOH) in thecarboxyl-terminal region of the E protein that appears to form three disulfide bondswith another segment of corresponding cysteines in the carboxyl-terminus of the S(spike) protein. These bonds point to a possible structural association between theE and S proteins. | 14 | Extraordinary characteristics for one-dimensional parity-time-symmetric periodic ring optical waveguide networks显示文摘In this paper, we design a one-dimensional(1D) parity-time-symmetric periodic ring optical waveguide network(PTSPROWN) and investigate its extraordinary optical characteristics. It is found that quite different from traditional vacuum/dielectric optical waveguide networks, 1D PTSPROWN cannot produce a photonic ordinary propagation mode, but can generate simultaneously two kinds of photonic nonpropagation modes: attenuation propagation mode and gain propagation mode. It creates neither passband nor stopband and possesses no photonic band structure. | 20 | Complete Genome Sequences of the SARS-CoV: the BJ Group (Isolates BJ01-BJ04)显示文摘Beijing has been one of the epicenters attacked most severely by the SARS-CoV (severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus) since the first patient was diagnosed in one of the city's hospitals. We now report complete genome sequences of the BJ Group, including four isolates (Isolates B J01, B J02, B J03,and B J04) of the SARS-CoV. It is remarkable that all members of the BJ Group share a common haplotype, consisting of seven loci that differentiate the group from other isolates published to date. Among 42 substitutions uniquely identifled from the BJ group, 32 are non-synonymous changes at the amino acid level.Rooted phylogenetic trees, proposed on the basis of haplotypes and other sequence variations of SARS-CoV isolates from Canada, USA, Singapore, and China, gave rise to different paradigms but positioned the BJ Group, together with the newly discovered GD01 (GD-Ins29) in the same clade, followed by the H-U Group (from Hong Kong to USA) and the H-T Group (from Hong Kong to Toronto), leaving the SP Group (Singapore) more distant.
