| 2 | Water induced phase segregation in hydrocarbon proton exchange membranes显示文摘Proton exchange membranes(PEMs) are a key material for proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs). Non-fluorinated hydrocarbon PEMs are low-cost alternatives to Nafion, but limited by the low proton conductivity, because of the weak phase segregation structure and narrow ion-transport channels.Various efforts have been taken to improve the performance of hydrocarbon PEMs, but mostly with complex methodologies. Here we demonstrate a simple, yet very efficient method to create phase segregation structure inside a typical hydrocarbon PEM, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)(SPEEK). By simply adding appropriate amounts of water into the DMF solvent, the resulting SPEEK membrane exhibits widened ion-transport channels, with the phase size of 2.7 nm, as indicated by both molecular dynamic(MD) simulations and transmission electron microscope(TEM) observations, and the proton conductivity is thus improved by 200%. | 5 | Heparin mimetics as potential intervention for COVID-19 and their bio-manufacturing显示文摘The COVID-19 pandemic has caused severe health problems worldwide and unprecedented decimation of the global economy.Moreover,after more than 2 years,many populations are still under pressure of infection.Thus,a broader perspective in developing antiviral strategies is still of great importance.Inspired by the observed multiple benefits of heparin in the treatment of thrombosis,the potential of low molecular weight heparin(LMWH)for the treatment of COVID-19 have been explored.Clinical applications found that LMWH decreased the level of inflammatory cytokines in COVID-19 patients,accordingly reducing lethality.Furthermore,several in vitro studies have demonstrated the important roles of heparan sulfate in SARS-CoV-2 infection and the inhibitory effects of heparin and heparin mimetics in viral infection.These clinical observations and designed studies argue for the potential to develop heparin mimetics as anti-SARS-CoV-2 drug candidates.In this review,we summarize the properties of heparin as an anticoagulant and the pharmaceutical possibilities for the treatment of virus infection,focusing on the perspectives of developing heparin mimetics via chemical synthesis,chemoenzymatic synthesis,and bioengineered production by microbial cell factories.The ultimate goal is to pave the eminent need for exploring novel compounds to treat coronavirus infection-caused diseases. | Lan Jiang Tianji Zhang Hongzhong Lu Saijuan Li Kangjie Lv Alex Tuffour Lixin Zhang Kan Ding Jin-Ping Li Hongmei Li Xueting Liu | 2023 | Synthetic and Systems Biotechnology2023,8,1: | 1 |
| 6 | Investigation of the Interaction Mechanism between Lignin Structural Units and Enzyme显示文摘The effect of lignin structural units on enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass was investigated,especially the inhibitory role of lignin in non-productive adsorption with enzymes.Milled wood lignin(MWL)was isolated from different hardwoods of poplar,eucalyptus and acacia.The isolated lignin samples were characterized by elemental analysis,gel permeation chromatography,nitrobenzene oxidation and fourier infrared spectroscopy.The mechanism of lignin structural units on enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose was studied by quartz crystal microbalance(QCM).The results showed that different structural units of lignin had different adsorption capacity for enzymes.The results of nitrobenzene oxidation indicated that the S/G ratio(S:syringyl-like lignin structures;G:guaiacyl-like lignin structures)of lignin of poplar was 0.99,that of eucalyptus was 1.92 and that of acacia was 1.34.According to the results of QCM,the adsorption capacity of the three lignin films was as follows:Poplar MWL(S/G ratio 0.99) | Lijing Huang Penghui Li Kangjie Jiang Wenjuan Wu | 2023 | Journal of Renewable Materials2023,11,4: | 0 |
| 7 | Assessment of complete lymph node dissection in patients with melanoma:A systemic review and meta-analysis显示文摘Background: Complete lymph node dissection(CLND) for patients with melanoma remains controversial. This meta-analysis aimed to compare the prognoses and complications between the CLND and control groups(patients who receive adjuvant treatment or observation only) in patients with sentinel lymph node(SLN)-positive melanoma.Methods: The Pub Med, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases were searched for cohort studies and randomized clinical trials(RCTs) conducted between 1964 and 2022, and the quality of the studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Hazard ratios(HR) or risk ratios(RR) with 95%confidence intervals(CIs) were calculated for each outcome. Heterogeneity and sensitivity tests were also conducted, and publication bias tests were performed when the pooled number of studies was >10.Results: Fifteen studies, including 11 cohort studies and 4 RCTs, were enrolled and assessed for quality. Analysis of overall survival showed no significant difference between the CLND and control groups(HR=1.02, 95% CI:0.69–1.51, P=0.922). Similarly, recurrence-free survival(HR=0.84, 95% CI: 0.6–1.16, P=0.287), disease-free survival(HR=1.06, 95% CI: 0.65–1.72, P=0.82), and disease-specific survival(HR=0.84, 95% CI: 0.59–1.21,P=0.355) showed no difference between the two groups. CLND did not reduce the risk of recurrence(RR=0.98,95% CI: 0.8–1.2, P=0.851).Conclusion: Remarkably, patients who underwent CLND were more likely to have complications such as flap necrosis and lymphedema than the controls.
