Functional traits of tree species with phylogenetic signal co-vary with environmental niches in two large forest dynamics plots显示文摘Aims While using phylogenetic and functional approaches to test the mechanisms of community assembly, functional traits often act as the proxy of niches. However, there is little detailed knowledge regarding the correlation between functional traits of tree species and their niches in local communities. We suggest that the co-varying correlation between functional traits and niches should be the premise for using phylogenetic and functional approaches to test mechanisms of community assembly.Using functional traits, phylogenetic and environmental data, this study aims to answer the questions:(i)within local communities,do functional traits of co-occurring species covary with their environmental niches at the species level?and(ii)what is the key ecological process underlying community assembly in Xishuangbanna and Ailaoshan forest dynamic plots(FDPs)?Methods We measured seven functional traits of 229 and 36 common species in Xishuangbanna and Ailaoshan FDPs in tropical and subtropical China, respectively. We also quantified the environmental niches for these species based on conditional probability. We then analyzed the correlations between functional traits and environmental niches using phylogenetic independent contrasts. After examining phylogenetic signals of functional traits using Pagel’sλ,we quantified the phylogenetic and functional dispersion along environmental gradients within local tree communities.Important Findings For target species, functional traits do co-vary with environmental niches at the species level in both of the FDPs,supporting that functional traits can be used as a proxy for local-scale environmental niches.Functional traits show significant phylogenetic signals in both of the FDPs.We found that the phylogenetic and functional dispersion were significantly clustered along topographical gradients in the Ailaoshan FDP but overdispersion in the Xishuangbanna FDP.These patterns of phylogenetic and functional dispersion suggest that environmental filtering plays a key role in structuring local tree assemblages in Ailaoshan FDP,while competition exclusion plays a key role in Xishuangbanna FDP.Jie Yang Xiuqin Ci Mengmeng Lu Guocheng Zhang Min Cao Jie Li Luxiang Lin 2014Journal of Plant Ecology2014,7,2:16
Cloning and functional characterization of Rht8,a“Green Revolution”replacement gene in wheat显示文摘Dear Editor,Wheat(Triticum aestivum)is a major staple crop in the world and provides~20%of the food calories for human consumption(Appels et al.,2018).During the 1960s and 1970s,the introduction of two semi-dwarfing genes Rht-B1b and Rht-D1b in wheat varieties strikingly improved lodging resistance and harvest index, and therefore substantially increased grain yield, resulting in the well-known'Green Revolution'(Peng et al.,1999).However,plants carrying Rht-B1b and Rht-D1b suffer from several drawbacks.Hongchun Xiong Chunyun Zhou Meiyu Fu Huijun Guo Yongdun Xie Linshu Zhao Jiayu Gu Shirong Zhao Yuping Ding Yuting Li Jiazi Zhang Ke Wang Xuejun Li Luxiang Liu 2022Molecular Plant2022,15,3:7
Elemental Content in Brown Rice by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy Reveals the Evolution of Asian Cultivated Rice显示文摘The phylogenetic relationship for classification traits and eight mineral elements in brown rice(Oryza sativa L.) from Yunnan Province in China was carried out using microwave assisted digestion followed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, and the analytical procedures were carefully controlled and validated. In general, the results show that the mean levels of K,Ca,Mg,Fe and Cu in brown rice for 789 accessions of rice landraces was distinctly lower than that of improved cultivars. They further demonstrate that Ca plays an important role in the differentiation of subspecies indica-japonica,especially to enhance adaptation of cold stress, and that five mineral elements in brown rice enhance the eurytopicity from landrace to improved cultivar.Hierarchical cluster analysis, using average linkage from SPSS software based on eight mineral elements in brown rice, showed that Yunnan rice could be grouped into rice landrace and improved cultivar, with the rice landrace being further clustered into five subgroups, and that, interestingly, purple rice does not cluster with either of the groups. Our present data confirm that indica is the closest relative of late rice and white rice, and that they constitute rice landraces together, whereas japonica is the closest relatives of non-nuda,early-mid and glutinous rice.It is further shown that japonica,non-nuda,early-mid,glutinous,white and red rice might be more primitive than indica,nuda,late,non-glutinous and purple rice, respectively.Yawen Zeng Luxiang Wang Juan Du Jiafu Liu Shuming Yang Xiaoying Pu Fenghui Xiao 2009Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2009,51,5:4

Contrasting effects of space and environment on functional and phylogenetic dissimilarity in a tropical forest显示文摘Aims The evolutionary history and functional traits of species can illumi-nate ecological processes supporting coexistence in diverse forest communities. However, little has been done in decoupling the rela-tive importance of these mechanisms on the turnover of phylogenetic and functional characteristics across life stages and spatial scales. Therefore, this study aims to estimate the contribution of environment and dispersal on the turnover of phylogenetic and functional diversity across life stages and spatial scales,in order to build a coherent pic-ture of the processes responsible for species coexistence. Methods We conducted the study in Xishuangbanna Forest Dynamics Plot in Yunnan Province, southwest China. We used four different spatial point process models to estimate the relative importance of disper-sal limitation and environmental filtering. The functional traits and phylogenetic relationships of all individual trees were incorporated in the analyses to generate measures of dissimilarity in terms of pair-wise and nearest-neighbor phylogenetic and functional characteris-tics across life stages and spatial scales.Important Findings We found non-random patterns of phylogenetic and functional turnover across life stages and spatial scales.Environmental filtering structured pairwise phylogenetic and functional beta diversity across spatial scales, while dispersal limitation alone, and in combination with environment filtering, shaped nearest neighbor phylogenetic and functional beta diversity. The relative importance of dispersal limitation and environmental filtering appeared to change with life stage but not with spatial scale. Our findings suggest that phylogenetic and functional beta diversity help to reveal the ecological processes responsible for evolu-tionary and functional assembly and highlight the importance of using a range of different metrics to gain full insights into these processes.Mengesha Asefa Calum Brown Min Cao Guocheng Zhang Xiuqin Ci Liqing Sha Jie Li Luxiang Lin Jie Yang 2019Journal of Plant Ecology2019,12,2:3
Water Treatment for Waterscapes in Shimao Butterfly Bay Phase-II Project of Kunshan City, China显示文摘To guarantee water quality of waterscapes in Shimao Butterfly Bay of Kunshan City, maintain the water quality above the grade-IV specified in National Standards of Surface Water Environmental Quality (GB3838-2002), and achieve the low-cost, long-term and sustainable water maintenance, basic principles of ecological engineering and aquatic ecosystem balance theory were taken as the guidance of water treatment, and several water treatment techniques were applied, for example, configuration of water plants, raising aquatic animals, and putting in microorganisms. In addition, primary water supply, water replenishing and flood drainage were considered in the construction of landscape rivers to ensure landscape effects of the lake. Through the long-term water quality guarantee of principal waterscapes in Shimao Butterfly Bay, rewarding attempts were made in guaranteeing water quality of waterscapes, and favorable effects were achieved.CAI Luxiang 2012Journal of Landscape Research2012,4,10:2

Two Ultraviolet Radiation Datasets that Cover China显示文摘Ultraviolet(UV) radiation has significant effects on ecosystems, environments, and human health, as well as atmospheric processes and climate change. Two ultraviolet radiation datasets are described in this paper. One contains hourly observations of UV radiation measured at 40 Chinese Ecosystem Research Network stations from 2005 to 2015. CUV3 broadband radiometers were used to observe the UV radiation, with an accuracy of 5%, which meets the World Meteorology Organization's measurement standards. The extremum method was used to control the quality of the measured datasets. The other dataset contains daily cumulative UV radiation estimates that were calculated using an all-sky estimation model combined with a hybrid model. The reconstructed daily UV radiation data span from 1961 to 2014. The mean absolute bias error and root-mean-square error are smaller than 30% at most stations, and most of the mean bias error values are negative, which indicates underestimation of the UV radiation intensity. These datasets can improve our basic knowledge of the spatial and temporal variations in UV radiation. Additionally, these datasets can be used in studies of potential ozone formation and atmospheric oxidation, as well as simulations of ecological processes.Hui LIU Bo HU Yuesi WANG Guangren LIU Liqin TANG Dongsheng JI Yongfei BAI Weikai BAO Xin CHEN Yunming CHEN Weixin DING Xiaozeng HAN Fei HE Hui HUANG Zhenying HUANG Xinrong LI Yan LI Wenzhao LIU Luxiang LIN Zhu OUYANG Boqiang QIN Weijun SHEN Yanjun SHEN Hongxin SU Changchun SONG Bo SUN Song SUN Anzhi WANG Genxu WANG Huimin WANG Silong WANG Youshao WANG Wenxue WEI Ping XIE Zongqiang XIE Xiaoyuan YAN Fanjiang ZENG Fawei ZHANG Yangjian ZHANG Yiping ZHANG Chengyi ZHAO Wenzhi ZHAO Xueyong ZHAO Guoyi ZHOU Bo ZHU 2017Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2017,34,7:2

Assembly of plant communities in coastal wetlands--the role of saltcedar Tamarix chinensis during early succession显示文摘Aims The mechanisms of plant community assembly are hypothesized to vary at different stages of succession. Here,we explore the local assemblage structure of a herbaceous plant community at its early stage of succession in a supratidal wetland.specifically,we assess the role of Chinese saltcedar(Tamarix chinensis),the lone dominant shrub species,in shaping the spatial structure and species composi-tion in the local plant community, after landscape alteration. Methods We used the multivariate trend-surface analysis for analyzing the spatial structure of the community composition.a null model was also used to detect potential biotic interactions between species.statistical significance was derived from a permutation test by randomizing the presence-absence matrix and functional traits independently.sensitivity analysis by randomly selecting 50 subplots and repeating the null model tests was also done. Finally, rank correlation analysis was used to study the relationship between effect sizes and distance to nearest T.chinensis individuals.Important Findings The herbaceous plant community was highly structured and shaped by the presence of T.chinensis.at local scale, two functional traits, plant height and leaf area, were found to be significantly convergent.Dispersal, environmental stress and interspecific competition played a trivial effect on the local community assembly. The facilitating effect of T.chinensis on the pioneering herbaceous plants, through acting as a wind shelter, was put forward as the dominant community assembly process.Meng Gao Xinxiu Wang Cang Hui Huapeng Yi Chuanqi Zhang Xiaoqing Wu Xiaoli Bi Yong Wang Luxiang Xiao De Wang 2015Journal of Plant Ecology2015,8,5:1

De novo myelodysplastic syndrome in a Rothmund-Thomson Syndrome patient with novel pathogenic RECQL4 variants显示文摘Rothmund-Thomson syndrome(RTS)is a rare autosomal-recessive disorder with clinical features consisting of rash, poikiloderma, sparse hair, short stature, juvenile cataracts, skeletal abnormalities, and cancer predisposition.Genetic studies involving detection of pathogenic RECQL4 variants provide the diagnostic certitude.Osteosarcoma was found in two-thirds RECQL4-mutated RTS patients, while hematological malignancies were rarely reported. The variant diversity of RECQL4 gene has not been fully identified and mutations associated with hematologic malignancies are not well described. In this study,we presented a pedigree of RTS from a Chinese family, among which the proband was diagnosed with de novo myelodysplastic syndrome(MDS).Comprehensive medical examination and chromosome karyotyping were performed on the proband.Whole exome sequencing(WES)was performed on the proband, his sister and his mother. The familial cosegregation of sequence variants derived from WES was conducted by polymerase chain reaction–based Sanger sequencing.Structures of candidate RECQL4 mutants were done by in silico analysis to assess pathogenicity.Three novel RECQL4 germline variants, including c.T274C,c.G3014A,and c.G801C,were identified by WES and validated by Sanger sequencing.Prediction of conformation indicated that the structural stability of human RECQL4 protein was largely affected with these variants. The co-occurring U2AF1 p.S34F and TP53 p.Y220C mutations might contribute to the development of MDS.Our study expands the mutational spectrum of RECQL4 and provides underlying molecular mechanism for the development of MDS in RTS patients.Chuanhe Jiang Hao Zhang Chuxian Zhao Luxiang Wang Xiaoxia Hu Zengkai Pan 2023Blood Science2023,5,2:1
