1Seismic analysis of structures with a fractional derivative model of viscoelastic dampers显示文摘Viscoelastic dampers are now among some of the preferred energy dissipation devices used for passive seismic response control. To evaluate the performance of structures installed with viscoelastic dampers, different analytical models have been used to characterize their dynamic force deformation characteristics. The fractional derivative models have received favorable attention as they can capture the frequency dependence of the material stiffness and damping properties observed in the tests very well. However, accurate analytical procedures are needed to calculate the response of structures with such damper models. This paper presents a modal analysis approach, similar to that used for the analysis of linear systems, for solving the equations of motion with fractional derivative terms for arbitrary forcing functions such as those caused by earthquake induced ground motions. The uncoupled modal equations still have fractional derivatives, but can be solved by numerical or analytical procedures. Both numerical and analytical procedures are formulated. 2Cytotoxicity evaluation and hepatoprotective potential of bioassay guided fractions from Feronia limmonia Linn leaf显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the cytotoxicity and hepatoprotective potentials of extracts,fractions or isolated compound from the leaves of Feronia limonia(F.limonia).Methods:Qualitative phytochemical analysis of extracts,fractions or compound was performed by means of thin layer chromatography and spectroscopic assays.The%purity of compound was measured by analytical HPLC.Extracts,fractions or compound have been individually evaluated for their cytotoxicity effects(10,20,100,250,500,750 and 1 000 μg/mL).Based on the inhibitory concentration(IC_(50)) obtained from the cell viability assay,graded concentrations of extracts,fractions or isolated compound were assessed(10,20,50,100,200 μg/mL) for its hepatoprotective potential against CCl_4-induced hepatotoxicity by monitoring activity levels of serum glutamatic pyruvatic transaminase(SGPT) and serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase(SGOT).Results:Results indicated that the methanol extract of F.limonia was non-toxic and hepatoprotective in nature as compared with the petroleum ether extract.The acetone fraction of methanolic extract also showed similar properties but the subsequent two fractions were cytotoxic.However,the pure compound isolated from the penultimate fraction of methanolic extract was non-toxic and hepatoprotective in nature.Biochemical investigations(SCOT,SCPT) further corroborated these cytological observations.Conclusions:It can be concluded from this study that F.limonia methanol extract,some fractions and pure isolated compound herein exhibit hepatoprotective activity.However,cytotoxicity recorded in the penultimate fraction and investigation of structural details of pure compound warrants further study.Mahendra Jain Rakhee Kapadia Ravirajsinh N Jadeja Menaka C Thounaojam Ranjitsinh V Devkar SH Mishra 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,6:11
3Over expression of resistin in adipose tissue of the obese induces insulin resistance显示文摘AIM: To compare resistin mRNA expression in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and its correlation with insulin resistance (IR) in postmenopausal obese women. METHODS: A total of 68 postmenopausal women (non obese = 34 and obese = 34) were enrolled for the study. The women of the two groups were age matched (49-70 years). Fasting blood samples were collected at admission and abdominal SAT was obtained during surgery for gall bladder stones or hysterectomy. Physical parameters [age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI)] were measured. Biochemical (plasma insulin and plasma glucose) parameters were estimated by enzymatic methods. RNA was isolated by the Trizol method.SAT resistin mRNA expression was done by real time- reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) by using Quanti Tect SYBR Green RT-PCR master mix. Data was analyzed using independent Student's t test, correlation and simple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: The mean weight (52.81 ± 8.04 kg vs 79.56 ± 9.91 kg; P < 0.001), BMI (20.23 ± 3.05 kg/m 2 vs 32.19 ± 4.86 kg/m 2 ; P < 0.001), insulin (8.47 ± 3.24 U/mL vs 14.67 ± 2.18 U/mL; P < 0.001), glucose (97.44 ± 11.31 mg/dL vs 109.67 ± 8.02 mg/dL; P < 0.001) and homeostasis model assessment index (2.01 ± 0.73 vs 3.96 ± 0.61; P < 0.001) were significantly higher in postmenopausal obese women compared to postmenopausal non obese women. The mean serum resistin level was also significantly higher in postmeno-pausal obese women compared to postmenopausal non obese women (9.05 ± 5.15 vs 13.92 ± 6.32, P < 0.001). Furthermore, the mean SAT resistin mRNA expression was also significantly (0.023 ± 0.008 vs 0.036 ± 0.009; P < 0.001) higher and over expressed 1.62 fold (upregulated) in postmenopausal obese women compared to postmenopausal non obese women. In postmeno-pausal obese women, the relative SAT resistin mRNA expression showed positive (direct) and significant correlation with BMI (r = 0.78, P < 0.001) and serum resistin (r = 0.76, P < 0.001). Furthermore, the SAT resistin mRNA expression in postmenopausal obese women also showed significant and direct association (r = 0.45, P < 0.01) with IR, while in postmenopausal non obese women it did not show any association (r = -0.04, P > 0.05). 4A Modified Plate Assay for Rapid Screening of Potassium-Solubilizing Bacteria显示文摘The utility of microorganisms for solubilizing the unavailable forms of potassium(K) from soil has led to renewed interest in fabrication of rapid and sensitive plate assays for their isolation and screening. The present study developed a modified plate assay and compared it with previously reported methods for the isolation and screening of K-solubilizing bacteria. The newly developed plate assay is based on improved visualization of halo zone formation around the colonies on agar plates, through inclusion of an acid-base indicator dye, bromothymol blue(BTB), to modify the previously reported Aleksandrov medium. The halo zone exhibited a significant correlation(R = 0.939) with K released in liquid medium. The visualization of potential K solubilizers was improved using this method, which would help in detection of weak/non-acid producers based on secretion of organic acids in the medium. Organic acids in plate diffuse radially and form halo zones in response to reaction with the acid-base indicator dye BTB. Furthermore, K solubilization on plates with this method can be observed within 48–72 h, against the incubation time of 4–5 d needed in the earlier method. 5Dam-break Flood Simulation under Various Likely Scenarios and Mapping Using GIS:Case of a Proposed Dam on River Yamuna,India显示文摘The precision modeling of dam break floods can lead to formulation of proper emergency action plan to minimize flood impacts within the economic lifetime of the assets.Application of GIS techniques in integration with hydrological modeling for mapping of the flood inundated areas can play a momentous role in further minimizing the risk and likely damages.In the present study,dam break analysis using DAMBRK model was performed under various likely scenarios.Probable Maximum Flood (PMF)calculated for a return period of 1000 years using deterministic approach was adopted for dam break analysis of the proposed dam under various combinations of breach dimensions.The available downstream river cross-sections data sets were used as input in the model to generate the downstream flood profile.Dam break flow depths generated by the DAMBRK model under various combinations of structural failure are subsequently plotted on Digital Elevation Model(DEM)of the downstream of dam site to map the likely affected area.The simulation results reveals that in one particular case the flood without dam may be more intense if a rainfall of significant intensity takes place.Mahendra S.LODHI Devendra K.AGRAWAL 2012Journal of Mountain Science2012,9,2:6

7Strength behaviour of a model rock intersected by non-persistent joint显示文摘Several constructions in the field of civil engineering quite often need to deal with rocks.Strength behaviour of rock intersected by a discontinuity or a set of discontinuities has been a topic of keen interest for engineering community.The popular attributes of discontinuities that have been given due importance are their frequency,orientation and surface characteristics.Non-persistency,however,has been given little attention.This article presents an experimental study wherein focus has been made on the effect of non-persistency of the joint on the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of a model rock for various geometries such as orientation,discontinuity length ratio and number of joint segments.The applicability of single plane of weakness theory(SPWT)to assess the strength of jointed specimens has also been evaluated.It has been noticed that SPWT captures the strength behaviour only for a narrow range of discontinuity orientations.As an improvement,an approach is suggested by extending concepts of degree of persistence and joint factor to have a better understanding towards strength behaviour of rocks intersected by non-persistent joints.Divya Shaunik Mahendra Singh 2019Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2019,11,6:4

9Bearing capacity of foundations on rock slopes intersected by non-persistent discontinuity显示文摘Rocks encountered in foundations of heavy structures are invariably intersected by discontinuities(joints).In the past,several studies have been performed by researchers to incorporate the effect of fully persistent joints in the assessment of the load-carrying capacity of rocks.However,in the field,the joints are non-persistent,and an assumption of full persistency will underestimate the capacity.Recently,Shaunik&Singh have studied the influence of non-persistency,number of joint segments and discontinuity orientation on the strength behaviour of rock specimens(Shaunik and Singh,2019).Bell’s approach can be used to obtain the bearing capacity of shallow foundations placed in jointed rocks.In the present study,results of the experimental work(Shaunik and Singh,2019)conducted by Shaunik&Singh have been used to suggest expressions by extending Bell’s approach for computing bearing capacity of the foundation placed near the crown of a rock slope.Easy to use design charts are also presented for field application.Finally,a real-life problem from Indian Garhwal Himalayas is considered,and the approach suggested in this study is utilised to obtain the bearing capacity of a bridge foundation as a function of uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of intact rock,joint friction,spacing and orientation of joint,nonpersistency and number of joint segments.Divya Shaunik Mahendra Singh 2020International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2020,30,5:3

11Evaluation of cytotoxic and anti-tumor activity of partially purified serine protease isolate from the Indian earthworm Pheretima posthuma显示文摘Objective:To isolate,partially purify and evaluate the cytotoxic and antitumor activity of a serine protease from the chosen Indian earthworm Pheretima posthuma.Methods:Whole animal extract was prepared and purified its protein constituents by size and charge based chromatographic separation techniques using Sephadex G-50 and DEAE-Cellulose resin respectively.Average molecular weight of the protein isolate was determined and analyzed for its cytotoxic property against Vero cells in different dilutions(1:20 and 1:40)and anti-tumor activity by MTT assay(a colorimetric assay)using breast cancer cell line MCF-7,with tamoxifen as standard.Results:One of the protein constituents after purification was characterized as serine protease by Caseinolytic plate diffusion assay.Average molecular weight of this purified isolate was determined,by SDS-PAGE analysis with standard protein ladder,as of 15 kDa.The performed tests suggested that the 15kDa fraction has potent cytotoxic activity and satisfactory antitumor activity as well in vitro.Conclusions:Exact molecular mechanism of the cytotoxic and antitumor activities is yet to be explored and currently we are working on ultra-purification and biophysical characterization of this fraction.Further investigation into the mechanism(s)of cytotoxic and antitumor activities at molecular level would be useful in treatment of various classes of cancer and viral infections in future.Mahendra Kumar Verma Francies Xavier Yogendra Kumar Verma Kota Sobha 2013Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2013,3,11:3

17Microbial responses to combined oxidation and catalysis treatment of 1,4-dioxane and co-contaminants in groundwater and soil显示文摘Post-treatment impacts of a novel combined hydrogen peroxide(H2O_(2))oxidation and WOx/ZrO_(2) catalysis used for the removal of 1,4-dioxane and chlorinated volatile organic compound(CVOC)contaminants were investigated in soil and groundwater microbial community.This treatment train removed~90%1,4-dioxane regardless of initial concentrations of 1,4-dioxane and CVOCs.The Illumina Miseq platform and bioinformatics were used to study the changes to microbial community structure.This approach determined that dynamic shifts of microbiomes were associated with conditions specific to treatments as well as 1,4-dioxane and CVOCs mixtures.The biodiversity was observed to decrease only after oxidation under conditions that included high levels of 1,4-dioxane and CVOCs,but increased when 1,4-dioxane was present without CVOCs.WO_(x)/ZrO_(2) catalysis reduced biodiversity across all conditions.Taxonomic classification demonstrated oxidative tolerance for members of the genera Massilia and Rhodococcus,while catalyst tolerance was observed for members of the genera Sphingomonas and Devosia.Linear discriminant analysis effect size was a useful statistical tool to highlight representative microbes,while the multidimensional analysis elucidated the separation of microbiomes under the low 1,4-dioxane-only condition from all other conditions containing CVOCs,as well as the differences of microbial population among original,post-oxidation,and post-catalysis states.The results of this study enhance our understanding of microbial community responses to a promising chemical treatment train,and the metagenomic analysis will help practitioners predict the microbial community status during the post-treatment period,which may have consequences for long-term management strategies that include additional biodegradation treatment or natural attenuation.Yu Miao Nicholas W.Johnson Kimberly Heck Sujin Guo Camilah D.Powell Thien Phan Phillip B.Gedalanga David T.Adamson Charles J.Newell Michael S.Wong Shaily Mahendra 2018Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2018,12,5:2
18Stability of fruit quality traits in diverse watermelon cultivars tested in multiple environments显示文摘Lycopene is a naturally occurring red carotenoid compound that is found in watermelon.Lycopene has antioxidant properties.Lycopene content,sugar content and hollowheart resistance are subject to significant genotype×environment interaction(G×E),which makes breeding for these fruit quality traits difficult.The objectives of this study were to(i)evaluate the influence of years and locations on lycopene content,sugar content and hollowheart resistance for a set of watermelon genotypes,and(ii)identify genotypes with high stability for lycopene,sugar,and hollowheart resistance.A diverse set of 40 genotypes was tested over 3 years and 8 locations across the southern United States in replicated,multi-harvest trials.Lycopene was tested in a subset of 10 genotypes.Data were analyzed using univariate and multivariate stability statistics(BLUP-GGE biplot)using SASGxE and RGxE programs.There were strong effects of environment as well as G×E interaction on watermelon quality traits.On the basis of stability measures,genotypes were classified as stable or unstable for each quality trait.'Crimson Sweet'is an inbred line with high quality trait performance as well as trait stability.'Stone Mountain','Tom Watson','Crimson Sweet'and'Minilee'were among the best genotypes for lycopene content,sugar content and hollowheart resistance.We developed a stability chart based on marketable yield and average ranking generated from different stability measures for yield attributes and quality traits.The chart will assist in choosing parents for improvement of watermelon cultivars.See http://cuke.hort.ncsu.edu/cucurbit/wmelon/wmelonmain.html.Mahendra Dia Todd C Wehner Penelope Perkins-Veazie Richard Hassell Daniel S Price George E Boyhan Stephen M Olson Stephen R King Angela R Davis Gregory E Tolla Jerome Bernier Benito Juarez 2016Horticulture Research2016,3,1:2
