| 1 | Interaction between diet composition and gut microbiota and its impact on gastrointestinal tract health显示文摘A substantial amount of emerging research is indicating that the gut microbiota has a significant impact on human health.Alterations of gut microbiota have clear consequences on intestinal homeostasis,physiology,gut microbiome,immune system and host metabolic pathways.Diet composition plays an important role in the control of gut microbial populations and,thus,in the prevention,management and treatment of certain diseases such as cancer,diabetes.A comprehensive analysis of previously reported results revealed that the gut microbiota can be modulated by diet and the composition of gut microbiota can be influenced by various diet components.The symbiotic relationship between different gut microbial communities regulates the immune system and,therefore,any dysbiosis can dysregulate the immune system.Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms involved in the interactions between diet composition,gut microbiota and associated diseases. | Muhammad Shahid Riaz Rajoka Junling Shi Hafiza Mahreen Mehwish Jing Zhu Qi Li Dongyan Shao Qingsheng Huang Hui Yang | 2017 | Food Science and Human Wellness2017,6,3: | 7 |
| 2 | Performance evaluation of hybrid constructed wetlands for the treatment of municipal wastewater in developing countries显示文摘In developing countries,high cost of conventional wastewater treatment is a major hindrance in its application.Constructed wetlands(CWs)offer low-cost and effective solution to this issue.The current study aimed to evaluate an innovative maneuver of CWs i.e.hybrid flow constructed wetlands(HCWs)for municipal wastewater(MWW).The HCWs included two lab scale CWs;one horizontal and one vertical,in series.Local plant species were used.HCWs were operated in both,batch and continuous mode.Batch mode was used to(1)optimize detention time and(2)find pollutants removal efficiency.Continuous operation(at batch optimized retention time)was carried out for the evaluation of mass removal rate,r(g·m-2·d-1),volumetric rate constant,Kv(per day)and areal rate constant,Ka(m·d-1).Among two local plants tested,Pistia stratiotes gave better removal efficiency than Typha.Optimum detention time in HCWs was found to be 8 days(4+4 each).The optimum COD,BOD,TSS,TKN and P removal observed for Pistia stratiotes planted HCWs was 80%,84%,82%,71%and88%respectively.Effluent standards for COD,BOD and TSS were met at optimum conditions.The values of Kaand Kv demonstrated that more removal occurred in vertical flow as compared to horizontal flow CW. | Sajjad Haydar Mehwish Anis Misbah Afaq | 2020 | Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2020,28,6: | 4 |
| 3 | Photoresponsive Supramolecular Hydrogel Co-assembled from Fmoc-Phe-OH and 4,4′-Azopyridine for Controllable Dye Release显示文摘Photoresponsive hydrogels have been attractive because they can provide precise spatial and temporal control for molecule release, whereas the conventional preparation of photoresponsive hydrogels generally involves complex chemical synthesis steps or specific conditions which limits their practical applications. Herein, a new photoresponsive hydrogel is facilely prepared via co-assembly of two simple molecules, Fmoc-Phe-OH and Azp, without chemical synthesis. The co-assembly mechanism, morphology, and photoresponsiveness of(Fmoc-Phe-OH)-Azp hydrogel are investigated by circular dichroism(CD), ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis), fluorescence, ~1 H nuclear magnetic resonance(~1 H-NMR), attenuated total internal reflection Fourier transform Infrared(ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Furthermore, the enhanced release of encapsulated sulforhodamine B(SRB) dye molecules can be achieved via UV light irradiation. The enhanced dye release amount can be controlled by manipulating photoirradiation time. | 7 | Bio-capped and green synthesis of ZnO/g-C_(3)N_(4) nanocomposites and its improved antibiotic and photocatalytic activities: An exceptional approach towards environmental remediation显示文摘In this research study, we have synthesized the bio-capped ZnO/g-C_(3)N_(4) nanocomposites by employing lemon juice(Citrus limon) as a stabilizer and mediator. Fruitfully, lemon juice which contains various acidic functional groups and citric acid has the capability to block the surface of g-C_(3)N_(4) from chemical reactivity and activated the surface of g-C_(3)N_(4) for various reactions. Consequently, the agglomeration behavior and controlled shape of g-C_(3)N_(4) has also been achieved. Our experimental results i.e. XRD,TEM, HRTEM, PL, FS, XPS, and PEC have confirmed that the lemon juice mediated and green g-C_(3)N_(4)(L-CN) have good performances and remarkable visible light photocatalytic activities as compared to the chemically synthesized g-C_(3)N_(4)(CN). Furthermore, the small surface area and low charge separation of g-C_(3)N_(4) is upgraded by coupling with Zn O nanoparticles. It is proved that the coupling of Zn O worked as a facilitator and photoelectron modulator to enhance the charge separation of g-C_(3)N_(4). Compared to pristine lemon-mediated green g-C_(3)N_(4)(L-CN), the most active sample 5Zn O/L-CN showed ~ 5-fold improvement in activities for ciprofloxacin(CIP) and methylene blue(MB) degradation. More specifically,the mineralization process and degradation pathways, and the mineralization process of ciprofloxacin(CIP) and methylene blue(MB) are suggested. | 11 | Assessment and impact of a biosecurity course in raising the awareness of students at the Jinnah post graduate Medical Center,Pakistan显示文摘Introduction:Pakistan Biological Safety Association(PBSA)is a not for profit,nongovernmental,professional organization established in 2008 and is striving to promote and implement Bio risk management in Pakistan.PBSA accelerated its program for strategic training of the national life scientists from 2013 and is still working on that mandate with the help of Fogarty International Center(FIC)&National Institute of Health USA and other international organizations working on this Global Health Security Initiative and subsequently Agenda(GHSA)Aims&Objectives:This biosafety training program was developed for capacity building of M.Phil.and PhD graduates the future laboratory users of Basic Medical Sciences Institute(BMSI),Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center which is the largest tertiary care hospital in Karachi,Pakistan involved in Research&Development(R&D)in medical sciences.Materials&Methods:This Pre post study was carried at Basic Medical Sciences Institute(JPMC),during the period of October 2018 to January 2019.A total of 48(16 PhD.32 M.Phil.)Grads students participated in the following study.The training program is administered through,custom made 4-month course having 16 contact hours also 4 hours of practical training.Training was evaluated using written assessment.The pre and post-training test was conducted after each session.Each test comprised of 15 multiple choice questions(MCQs)pre and post session making it 30 MCQs in total for each session.A final assessment consisting 30 MCQs conducted at the end of course.Results:There was vast difference observed in the post assessment results as compared to the pre assessment results.At the end of the course final assessment was carried out which gave an overall impression of vast change(83.3%)in awareness regarding bio risk management among the graduate students,which reflected the efficacy of this training.To ensure the validity of results and the intention to improvise the quality of course in future,feedback regarding the course and trainer was obtain through Likert scale.Reliability of Likert scale carried through Cronbach’s alpha,showed all variables with a maximum score of 0.9,indicating high reliability of the generated feedback evaluation.Conclusion:This study highlighted that through concerted efforts of professional organizations,proper awareness of public and concerned personals,regarding Biosafety&Biosecurity can certainly reduce the chances of errors and will ensure potential safety and security to the laboratory workers,community and environment,potentially exposed to these pathogens&toxins which are regarded as biohazards. | Shamsul Arfin Qasmi Mehwish Zafar Sarmad Pirzada Kauser Abbas Saldera Aftab Turabi | 2019 | Journal of Biosafety and Biosecurity2019,1,2: | 1 |

| 18 | An innovative design of septic tank for wastewater treatment and its performance evaluation: An applicable model for developing countries显示文摘A study was carried out to evaluate the treatment efficiency of modified model of septic tank(ST)for the treatment of domestic wastewater.The objective was to explore the possibility of increasing the removal efficiency,at household level,thereby reducing cost and treatment burden on city level treatment plants.For this purpose,a bench scale model of ST was prepared and operated continuously for 78 days at different detention times i.e.,48,24 and 12 h and at two reactor temperatures viz.15°C and 25°C.Domestic wastewater was fed to the bench scale ST without pre-settling.Research was conducted under two different arrangements.Firstly,by installing baffles in the bench scale ST(called Run-1 setup),and secondly by installing perforated plates between the baffles(called Run-2 setup).Results demonstrated that Run-2 setup is better than Run-1 setup.Temperature significantly affects the efficiency.Detention time of 24 h was found feasible.Run-2 setup demonstrated a percentage BOD removal of 45%with effluent BOD of 113 mg·L^(-1)at 15°C and 85%removal with effluent BOD of 31 mg·L^(-1)at 25°C.It is concluded that if a modified design of ST using Run-2 setup is provided at household level,the effluent coming out of the house will meet the National Environmental Quality Standards(NEQS)when reactor temperature is close to 25°C.Development authorities are suggested to change their by-laws and make modified ST mandatory for all households.This may significantly reduce the cost and footprint of city level wastewater treatment plants being planned. | Sajjad Haydar Mehwish Anis Gul E Hina Javed Anwar Aziz Mudasar Arbi | 2018 | Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2018,26,4: | 0 |
