| 1 | Ground response to high horizontal stresses during longwall retreat and its implications for longwall headgate support显示文摘Roof falls in longwall headgate can occur when weak roof and high horizontal stress are present. To prevent roof falls in the headgate under high horizontal stress, it is important to understand the ground response to high horizontal stress in the longwall headgate and the requirements for supplemental roof support. In this study, a longwall headgate under high horizontal stress was instrumented to monitor stress change in the pillars, deformations in the roof, and load in the cable bolts. The conditions in the headgate were monitored for about six months as the longwall face passed by the instrumented site.The roof behavior in the headgate near the face was carefully observed during longwall retreat.Numerical modeling was performed to correlate the modeling results with underground observation and instrumentation data and to quantify the effect of high horizontal stress on roof stability in the longwall headgate. | 2 | Intelligent automated system based on a fuzzy logic system for plant protection product control in orchards显示文摘The spraying of plant protection product(PPP)in orchards is a very hazardous working procedure,owing to the spray drift caused by the uneven operation of conventional axial boom sprayers.This research describes an intelligent automated system for precise(PPP)distribution in real-time.It is based on an intelligent decision-making model using ultrasonic measurements of leaf area density under laboratory conditions,which serve to trigger electromagnetic valves(EMV)on the axial boom sprayer.A fuzzy logic algorithm was an integrated part of the intelligent system for controlling the PPP by generating the pulse width modulation signal and applying it through the EMV of the prototype boom sprayer.The results showed that by using an intelligent decision-making model,the same efficiency as with conventional methods could be achieved,but with reduced usage of plant protection products.Thus,the intelligent automated system used 4.8 times less spray mixture than the conventional one. | Peter Berk A.Belšak D.Stajnko M.Lakota N.Muškinja M.Hočevar J.Rakun | 2019 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2019,12,3: | 2 |
| 3 | Influence of longwall mining on the stability of gas wells in chain pillars显示文摘Longwall mining has a significant influence on gas wells located within longwall chain pillars.Subsurface subsidence and abutment pressure induced by longwall mining can cause excessive stresses and deformations in gas well casings.If the gas well casings are compromised or ruptured,natural gas could migrate into the mine workings,potentially causing a fire or explosion.By the current safety regulations,the gas wells in the chain pillars have to be either plugged or protected by adequate coal pillars.The current regulations for gas well pillar design are based on the 1957 Pennsylvania gas well pillar study.The study provided guidelines for gas well pillars by considering their support area and overburden depth as well as the location of the gas wells within the pillars.As the guidelines were developed for room-andpillar mining under shallow cover,they are no longer applicable to modern longwall coal mining,particularly,under deep cover.Gas well casing of failures have occurred even though the chain pillars for the gas wells met the requirements by the 1957 study.This study,conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH),presents seven cases of conventional gas wells penetrating through longwall chain pillars in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam.The study results indicate that overburden depth and pillar size are not the only determining factors for gas well stability.The other important factors include subsurface ground movement,overburden geology,weak floor,as well as the type of the construction of gas wells.Numerical modeling was used to model abutment pressure,subsurface deformations,and the response of gas well casings.The study demonstrated that numerical models are able to predict with reasonable accuracy the subsurface deformations in the overburden above,within,and below the chain pillars,and the potential location and modes of gas well failures,thereby providing a more quantifiable approach to assess the stability of the gas wells in longwall chain pillars. | Peter Zhang Heather Dougherty Daniel Su Jack Trackemas Berk Tulu | 2020 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2020,30,1: | 2 |

| 10 | Reduction of environmental pollution by using RTK-navigation in soil cultivation显示文摘The concept of precision farming is wide,and it represents the efficiency which is achieved with the help of precision.For the navigation of field machines,the RTK(Real Time Kinematic)navigation is needed.In order to verify the positive effects in practice,RTK navigation system equipped with Fentd 828 was applied to test the width of overlap,and fuel and time that could be saved compared with manual driving.The experiment was conducted on two areas of land size of 172 m×58 m with two working machines width 3 m and 6 m.Results indicated that 15.7%of the time and 8.66%of the fuel were saved on a working machine of 3 meters width,and 12.6%of the time and 8.28%of the fuel were saved on a working machine of 6 m width.The width of the overlap represent 10%of the working width of the machine,and with the method of turning,which RTK navigation allows,additional time was saved.Ecological footprint,CO2 emissions and global warming potential(GWP)was estimated under different guiding systems.The largest footprint was related to manual tillage with 3 m width working machine,while estimation on CO2(kg)emissions and GWP obtained the same result.The use of precision agriculture technologies allows better planning and analyzing of working procedures.The air,water and soil pollution are less intensive. | Damijan Kelc Denis Stajnko Peter Berk Jurij Rakun Peter Vindiš Miran Lakota | 2019 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2019,12,5: | 1 |

| 13 | Geotechnical considerations for concurrent pillar recovery in close-distance multiple seams显示文摘Room-and-pillar mining with pillar recovery has historically been associated with more than 25% of all ground fall fatalities in underground coal mines in the United States.The risk of ground falls during pillar recovery increases in multiple-seam mining conditions.The hazards associated with pillar recovery in multiple-seam mining include roof cutters, roof falls, rib rolls, coal outbursts, and floor heave.When pillar recovery is planned in multiple seams, it is critical to properly design the mining sequence and panel layout to minimize potential seam interaction.This paper addresses geotechnical considerations for concurrent pillar recovery in two coal seams with 21 m of interburden under about 305 m of depth of cover.The study finds that, for interburden thickness of 21 m, the multiple-seam mining influence zone in the lower seam is directly under the barrier pillar within about 30 m from the gob edge of the upper seam.The peak stress in the interburden transfers down at an angle of approximately 20°away from the gob, and the entries and crosscuts in the influence zone are subjected to elevated stress during development and retreat.The study also suggests that, for full pillar recovery in close-distance multiple-seam scenarios,it is optimal to superimpose the gobs in both seams, but it is not necessary to superimpose the pillars.If the entries and/or crosscuts in the lower seam are developed outside the gob line of the upper seam,additional roof and rib support needs to be considered to account for the elevated stress in the multiple-seam influence zone. | Peter Zhang Berk Tulu Morgan Sears Jack Trackemas | 2018 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2018,28,1: | 0 |
| 14 | Possibilities and concerns of implementing precision agriculture technologies on small farms in Slovenia显示文摘Precision agriculture(PA)through the use and utilization of innovative technologies is a concept in agricultural management that enables long-term efficiency gains,control of unforeseen changes,and a reduction of negative impacts on the environment.However,there are even more reasons and benefits to using precision agriculture technologies(PATs)on farms,but the actual use on small farms is often questionable.The main objective of this research was to evaluate and analyze the current state of PA and its potential on a set of small farms.In addition,a comparison was made between small farms located in less favored areas(LFAs)and more favored areas(MFAs)to find if specific characteristics of the surrounding environment affect the(non-)implementation of these technologies by farm owners,with respect to the given regional possibilities.The result shows that 57.5%of respondents on these farms have never implemented PATs before and 20%are beginners in their respective fields.It was found that there were no statistically significant differences in the integration between fewer LFAs and MFAs technologies and their use in this study.The majority of respondents believe that the main changes need to occur on the level of politics.The results show that the level of cost or initial investment is the main reason and the main obstacle in the implementation of PATs on the surveyed farms. | Jurij Rakun Erik Rihter Damijan Kelc Stajnko Denis Peter Vindiš Peter Berk Peter Polič Miran Lakota | 2022 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2022,15,3: | 0 |
