| 1 | Biomass carbon stocks in China's forests between 2000 and 2050:A prediction based on forest biomass-age relationships显示文摘China's forests are characterized by young forest age,low carbon density and a large area of planted forests,and thus have high potential to act as carbon sinks in the future.Using China's national forest inventory data during 1994-1998 and 1999-2003,and direct field measurements,we investigated the relationships between forest biomass density and forest age for 36 major forest types.Statistical approaches and the predicted future forest area from the national forestry development plan were applied to estimate the potential of forest biomass carbon storage in China during 2000-2050.Under an assumption of continuous natural forest growth,China's existing forest biomass carbon(C) stock would increase from 5.86 Pg C(1 Pg=1015 g) in 1999-2003 to 10.23 Pg C in 2050,resulting in a total increase of 4.37 Pg C.Newly planted forests through afforestation and reforestation will sequestrate an additional 2.86 Pg C in biomass.Overall,China's forests will potentially act as a carbon sink for 7.23 Pg C during the period 2000-2050,with an average carbon sink of 0.14 Pg C yr-1.This suggests that China's forests will be a significant carbon sink in the next 50 years. | XU Bing,GUO ZhaoDi,PIAO ShiLong & FANG JingYun* Department of Ecology,College of Urban and Environmental Sciences,and Key Laboratory for Earth Surface Processes of the Ministry of Education,Peking University,Beijing 100871,China | 2010 | Science China(Life Sciences)2010,53,7: | 61 |
| 2 | Clinical short-term results of radiofrequency ablation in liver cancers显示文摘AIM: To study local therapeutic efficacy, side effects, andcomplications of radiofrequency ablation (RFA), whichis emerging as a new method for the treatment ofpatients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) withcirrhosis or chronic hepatitis and metastatic liver cancer.METHODS: Thirty-six patients with primary andsecondary liver cancers (21 with primaryhepatocellular carcinoma, 12 with colorectal cancerliver metastases and 3 with other malignant livermetastases), which were considered not suitable forcurative resection, were include in this study. Theywere treated either with RFA (RITA2000, MountainView, California, USA) percutaneously (n=20)orintraoperatively (n=16).The procedures wereperformed using the ultrasound guidance. The qualityof RFA were based on monitoring of equipments andsubject feeling of the practitioners. Patients treatedwith RFA was followed according to clinical findings,radiographic images, and tumor markers.RESULTS: Thirty-six patients underwent RFA for 48nodules. RFA was used to treat an average 1.3 lesionsper patient, and the median size of treated lesions was2.5 cm (range, 0.5-9 cm). The average hospital staywas 5.6 days overall (2.8 days for percutaneous casesand 7.9 days for open operations). Seven patientsunderwent a second RFA procedure (sequentialablations). Sixteen HCC patients with a high level ofalpha fetoprotein (AFP) and 9 colorectal cancer livermetastases patients with a high level of serumcarcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) have a great reductionbenefited from RFA. Four (11.1 %) patients hadcomplications: one skin burn; one postoperativehemorrhage; one cholecystitis and one hepatic abscessassociated with percutaneous ablations of a largelesion. There were 4 deaths: 3 patients died from localand system diseases (1 at 7 month, 1 at 9 month, and 1at 12 month), 1 patients died from cardiovascular shock,but no RFA-related death. At a median follow-up of 10months (range, 1-24 months), 6 patients (16.7 %) hadrecurrences at an RFA site, and 20 patients (56.7 %)remained clinically free of disease.CONCLUSION: RF ablation appears to be an effective,safe, and relatively simple procedure for the treatmentof unresectable liver cancers. The rate and severity ofcomplications appear acceptable. | 5 | The impacts of climate extremes on the terrestrial carbon cycle:A review显示文摘The increased frequency of climate extremes in recent years has profoundly affected terrestrial ecosystem functions and the welfare of human society. The carbon cycle is a key process of terrestrial ecosystem changes. Therefore, a better understanding and assessment of the impacts of climate extremes on the terrestrial carbon cycle could provide an important scientific basis to facilitate the mitigation and adaption of our society to climate change. In this paper, we systematically review the impacts of climate extremes(e.g. drought, extreme precipitation, extreme hot and extreme cold) on terrestrial ecosystems and their mechanisms. Existing studies have suggested that drought is one of the most important stressors on the terrestrial carbon sink, and that it can inhibit both ecosystem productivity and respiration. Because ecosystem productivity is usually more sensitive to drought than respiration, drought can significantly reduce the strength of terrestrial ecosystem carbon sinks and even turn them into carbon sources. Large inter-model variations have been found in the simulations of drought-induced changes in the carbon cycle, suggesting the existence of a large gap in current understanding of the mechanisms behind the responses of ecosystem carbon balance to drought, especially for tropical vegetation. The effects of extreme precipitation on the carbon cycle vary across different regions. In general, extreme precipitation enhances carbon accumulation in arid ecosystems, but restrains carbon sequestration in moist ecosystems. However, current knowledge on the indirect effects of extreme precipitation on the carbon cycle through regulating processes such as soil carbon lateral transportation and nutrient loss is still limited. This knowledge gap has caused large uncertainties in assessing the total carbon cycle impact of extreme precipitation. Extreme hot and extreme cold can affect the terrestrial carbon cycle through various ecosystem processes. Note that the severity of such climate extremes depends greatly on their timing, which needs to be investigated thoroughly in future studies. | 8 | Clinical application of serial operations with preserving spleen显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the clinical application of serial operations with preservation of spleen.METHODS: Serial operations with preserving spleen were performed on 211 cases in our hospital from 1980 to 2000.The patient's age ranged from 13 to 56 years, averaging 3years. Diseases included splenic injury in 171 cases, portal hypertension in 9 cases, splenic cyst in 10 cases, and the lesion of pancreatic body and tail in 21 cases.RESULTS: All the cases were cured, and 129 patients were followedup from 3 months to 3 years with the leukocyte phagocytosis test, detection of immunoglubin, CT, 99mTc scanning and ultrasonogrsphy. | 12 | Multi-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis of Chinese Brucella strains isolated from 1953 to 2013显示文摘Background:Brucellosis was a common human and livestock disease caused by Brucella strains,the category B priority pathogens by the US Center for Disease Control(CDC).Identified as a priority disease in human and livestock populations,the increasing incidence in recent years in China needs urgent control measures for this disease but the molecular background important for monitoring the epidemiology of Brucella strains at the national level is still lacking.Methods:A total of 600 Brucella isolates collected during 60 years(from 1953 to 2013)in China were genotyped by multiple locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis(MLVA)and the variation degree of MLVA11 loci was calculated by the Hunter Gaston Diversity Index(HGDI)values.The charts and map were processed by Excel 2013,and cluster analysis and epidemiological distribution was performed using BioNumerics(version 5.1).Results:The 600 representative Brucella isolates fell into 104 genotypes with 58 singleton genotypes by the MLVA11 assay,including B.melitensis biovars 2 and 3(five main genotypes),B.abortus biovars 1 and 3(two main genotypes),B.suis biovars 1 and 3(three main genotypes),and B.canis(two main genotypes)respectively.While most B.suis biovar 1 and biovar 3 were respectively found in northern provinces and southern provinces,B.melitensis and B.abortus strains were dominant in China.Canine Brucellosis was only found in animals without any human cases reported.Eight Brucellosis epidemic peaks emerged during the 60 years between 1953 and 2013:1955-1959,1962-1969,1971-1975,1977-1983,1985-1989,1992-1997,2000-2008 and 2010-2013 in China.Conclusions:Brucellosis has its unique molecular epidemiological patterns with specific spatial and temporal distribution according to MLVA.Trial registration:IDOP-D-16-00101. | Guo-Zhong Tian Bu-Yun Cui Dong-Ri Piao Hong-Yan Zhao Lan-Yu Li Xi Liu Pei Xiao Zhong-Zhi Zhao Li-Qing Xu Hai Jiang Zhen-Jun Li | 2017 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1: | 6 |
| 13 | Maternal and Fetal Exposure to Four Carcinogenic Environmental Metals显示文摘Objective To examine maternal and fetal exposure levels to four carcinogenic metals,arsenic (As),cadmium (Cd),nickel (Ni),and beryllium (Be),and to investigate their environmental influences.Methods Metal concentrations in maternal and umbilical cord blood were measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).Environmental factors that might play a role in exposure were analyzed using Mann-Whitney nonparametric U-tests and multiple linear regression.Results The concentrations of As,Cd,and Ni in umbilical cord blood (5.41,0.87,and 139.54 μg/L) were significantly lower than those in maternal blood (6.91,1.93,and 165.93 μg/L).There were significant positive correlations between the maternal and cord concentrations of each carcinogen.Our results showed that:(i) exposures to potentially harmful occupational factors during pregnancy were associated with high levels of maternal As,Cd,and Ni;(ii) living close to major transportation routes (<500 m) or exposure to second-hand smoke during pregnancy increased the maternal Cd levels and (iii) living close to industrial chimneys induced high maternal Ni levels.Multiple linear regression analysis showed that these environmental factors remained significant in models of the influences of these four carcinogens.Conclusion Both mothers and fetuses had been exposed to As,Cd,Ni,and Be.The increased levels of these carcinogens in pregnant women were associated with some detrimental environmental factors,such as occupational exposure,contact with second-hand smoke and living close to major transportation routes or industrial chimneys. | HUAI GUAN FENG-YUAN PIAO XIAO-WEI LI QIU-JUAN LI LEI XU KAZUHITO YOKOYAMA | 2010 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2010,23,6: | 5 |
| 14 | Monte Carlo simulation fused with target distribution modeling via deep reinforcement learning for automatic high-efficiency photon distribution estimation显示文摘Particle distribution estimation is an important issue in medical diagnosis. In particular, photon scattering in some medical devices extremely degrades image quality and causes measurement inaccuracy. The Monte Carlo(MC) algorithm is regarded as the most accurate particle estimation approach but is still time-consuming, even with graphic processing unit(GPU) acceleration. The goal of this work is to develop an automatic scatter estimation framework for high-efficiency photon distribution estimation. Specifically, a GPU-based MC simulation initially yields a raw scatter signal with a low photon number to hasten scatter generation. In the proposed method, assume that the scatter signal follows Poisson distribution, where an optimization objective function fused with sparse feature penalty is modeled. Then, an over-relaxation algorithm is deduced mathematically to solve this objective function. | 16 | Integrative analysis of DNA methylation and gene expression identified cervical cancer-specific diagnostic biomarkers显示文摘Cervical cancer is the leading cause of death among women with cancer worldwide.Here,we performed an integrative analysis of Illumina HumanMethylation450K and RNA-seq data from TCGA to identify cervical cancer-specific DNA methylation markers.We first identified differentially methylated and expressed genes and examined the correlation between DNA methylation and gene expression.The DNA methylation profiles of 12 types of cancers,including cervical cancer,were used to generate a candidate set,and machine-learning techniques were adopted to define the final cervical cancer-specific markers in the candidate set.Then,we assessed the protein levels of marker genes by immunohistochemistry by using tissue arrays containing 93 human cervical squamous cell carcinoma samples and cancer-adjacent normal tissues.Promoter methylation was negatively correlated with the local regulation of gene expression.In the distant regulation of gene expression,the methylation of hypermethylated genes was more likely to be negatively correlated with gene expression,while the methylation of hypomethylated genes was more likely to be positively correlated with gene expression.Moreover,we identified four cervical cancer-specific methylation markers,cg07211381(RAB3C),cg12205729(GABRA2),cg20708961(ZNF257),and cg26490054(SLC5A8),with 96.2%sensitivity and 95.2%specificity by using the tenfold cross-validation of TCGA data.The four markers could distinguish tumors from normal tissues with a 94.2,100,100,and 100%AUC in four independent validation sets from the GEO database.Overall,our study demonstrates the potential use of methylation markers in cervical cancer diagnosis and may boost the development of new epigenetic therapies. | Wanxue Xu Mengyao Xu Longlong Wang Wei Zhou Rong Xiang Yi Shi Yunshan Zhang Yongjun Piao | 2019 | Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy2019,4,1: | 4 |
| 17 | The role of bone marrow-derived cells in the origin of liver cancer revealed by single-cell sequencing显示文摘Objective:Epithelial cancers often originate from progenitor cells,while the origin of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is still controversial.HCC,one of the deadliest cancers,is closely linked with liver injuries and chronic inflammation,which trigger massive infiltration of bone marrow-derived cells(BMDCs)during liver repair.Methods:To address the possible roles of BMDCs in HCC origination,we established a diethylnitrosamine(DEN)-induced HCC model in bone marrow transplanted mice.Immunohistochemistry and frozen tissue immunofluorescence were used to verify DENinduced HCC in the pathology of the disease.The cellular origin of DEN-induced HCC was further studied by single cell sequencing,single-cell nested PCR,and immunofluorescence-fluorescence in situ hybridization.Results:Studies by using single cell sequencing and biochemical analysis revealed that HCC cells in these mice were coming from donor mice BMDCs,and not from recipient mice.Furthermore,the copy numbers of mouse orthologs of several HCC-related genes previously reported in human HCC were also altered in our mouse model.DEN-induced HCCs exhibited a similar histological phenotype and genomic profile as human HCCs.Conclusions:These results suggested that BMDCs are an important origin of HCC,which provide important clues to HCC prevention,detection,and treatments. | Lu Chen Xianfu Yi Piao Guo Hua Guo Ziye Chen Chunyu Hou Lisha Qi Yongrong Wang Chengwen Li Peng Liu Yucun Liu Yuanfu Xu Ning Zhang | 2020 | Cancer Biology & Medicine2020,17,1: | 4 |
| 18 | Pingchuan formula(平喘方) improves allergic asthma in mice through inhibiting nuclear factor-kappa B/mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway显示文摘OBJECTIVE:To examine the role and decipher the mechanism of Pingchuan formula(平喘方,PCF)in treating allergic asthma.METHODS:The mice were treated with saline,dexamethasone(DXM)and PCF for 1 week after the asthma model was established and their respiratory function including respiratory resistance(RI),pulmonary dynamic compliance(Cdyn)and maximum voluntary ventilation(MVV)were measured.In addition,cellular changes in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF)and pathological changes in lung biopsy as well as the expression level ofα-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA),transforming growth factor-beta1(TGF-β1)in BALF and interleukin-5(IL-5),interleukin-13(IL-13),tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),interferon-γ(IFN-γ),nuclear factor-kappa B-p65(NF-κBp65),inhibitor-αof nuclear transcription factorκB(IκBα),p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(p38 MAPK),c-jun n-terminal kinase(JNK)and its phosphorylated proteins in lung tissue were also examined and compared among different groups.RESULTS:Our data suggested that the respiratory functions were significantly improved and the pathological changes ameliorated in the DXM group and the PCF group compared to the model group.Both DXM and PCF effectively decreased the number of eosinophils,lymphocytes,and neutrophils in BAL as well as the secretion ofα-SMA and TGF-β1,IL-5,IL-13,while increased the expression of TNF-αand IFN-γ.Furthermore,our study indicated that the NF-κBp65,IκBα,p38 MAPK and JNK pathways were inhibited under the treatment of PCF.CONCLUSION:Our data indicated that PCF can attenuate the inflammatory response in asthma through inhibiting the NF-κB/MAPK signaling pathway.This study not only supported the use of PCF in allergic asthma in clinic but also shed light upon afurther understanding of the disease pathogenesis. | WU Mingyun YU Jianer BAI Li XUE Zheng JIANG Shenhua LI Liqing PIAO Xiang XU Wanchao WANG Jiani SHEN Qian | 2021 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2021,41,6: | 4 |
| 19 | Association between Adiponectin and Metabolic Syndrome in Older Adults from Major Cities of China显示文摘Objective To investigate the association between adiponectin and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and related diseases in older adults from major cities of China.Methods A total of 2 049 adults at the age of 60-96 years from 18 major cities of China were enrolled in the study.Plasma adiponectin and insulin concentrations were measured.Insulin resistance was assessed by homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR).The definitions proposed by International Diabetes Federation (IDF)and American Heart Association/National Heart,Lung,and Blood Institute (AHA/NLHBI)were used to identify MetS.Results The adiponectin concentration increased with the advance of age and was higher in women than in men.The sex specific adiponectin concentration was inversely correlated with body mass index(BMI),waist circumference,diastolic blood pressure,triglycerides,glucose and fasting blood insulin,and positively correlated with HDL-C(P<0.001).The adiponectin concentration decreased with increasing MetS components.Compared with the 4th sex-specific adiponectin quartile,the odds ratio(OR)for prevalent MetS-IDF and MetS-AHA/NLHBI in subjects of the 1st quartile group was 3.25(95% CI:2.24,4.71)and 3.21(95% CI:2.26,4.55),respectively.The association was independent of age,sex,life-style factors,medication,family history of chronic diseases,BMI,and HOMA-IR.The OR for MetS was much higher than those of MetS components and its related diseases.Conclusion Adiponectin is strongly associated with MetS independent of insulin resistance and obesity in older adults from major cities in China.The adiponectin concentration is a useful predictor for the risk of MetS. | QIN ZHUO ZHI-QING WANG PING FU JIAN-HUA PIAO YUAN TIAN JIE XU XIAO-GUANG YANG | 2010 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2010,23,1: | 4 |
