1The study on seasonal characteristics of water masses in the western East China Sea shelf area显示文摘On the basis of the CTD data and the modeling results in the winter and summer of 2009, the seasonal characteristics of the water masses in the western East China Sea shelf area were analyzed using a cluster analysis method. The results show that the distributions and temperature-salinity characteristics of the water masses in the study area are of distinct seasonal difference. In the western East China Sea shelf area, there are three water masses during winter, i.e., continental coastal water(CCW), Taiwan Warm Current surface water(TWCSW) and Yellow Sea mixing water(YSMW), but four ones during summer, i.e., the CCW, the TWCSW, Taiwan Warm Current deep water(TWCDW) and the YSMW. Of all, the CCW, the TWCSW and the TWCDW are all dominant water masses. The CCW, primarily characterized by a low salinity, has lower temperature, higher salinity and smaller spatial extent in winter than in summer. The TWCSW is warmer, fresher and smaller in summer than in winter, and it originates mostly from the Kuroshio surface water(KSW) northeast of Taiwan, China and less from the Taiwan Strait water during winter, but it consists of the strait water and the KSW during summer. 2Seasonal variability in the thermohaline structure of the Western Pacific Warm Pool显示文摘Using the 28°C isotherm to define the Western Pacific Warm Pool(WPWP), this study analyzes the seasonal variability of the WPWP thermohaline structure on the basis of the monthly-averaged sea temperature and salinity data from 1950 to 2011, and the dynamic and thermodynamic mechanisms based on the monthly-averaged wind,precipitation, net heat fluxes and current velocity data. A DT=–0.4°C is more suitable than other temperature criterion for determining the mixed layer(ML) and barrier layer(BL) over the WPWP using monthly-averaged temperature and salinity data. The WPWP has a particular thermohaline structure and can be vertically divided into three layers, i.e., the ML, BL, and deep layer(DL). The BL thickness(BLT) is the thickest, while the ML thickness(MLT) is the thinnest. The MLT has a similar seasonal variation to the DL thickness(DLT) and BLT.They are all thicker in spring and fall but thinner in summer. The temperatures of the ML and BL are both higher in spring and autumn but lower in winter and summer with an annual amplitude of 0.15°C, while the temperature of the DL is higher in May and lower in August. The averaged salinities at these three layers are all higher in March but lower in September, with annual ranges of 0.41–0.45. Zonal currents, i.e., the South Equatorial Current(SEC)and North Equatorial Counter Current(NECC), and winds may be the main dynamic factors driving the seasonal variability in the WPWP thermohaline structure, while precipitation and net heat fluxes are both important thermodynamic factors. Higher(lower) winds cause both the MLT and BLT to thicken(thin), a stronger(weaker)NECC induces MLT, BLT, and DLT to thin(thicken), and a stronger(weaker) SEC causes both the MLT and BLT to thicken(thin) and the DLT to thin(thicken). An increase(decrease) in the net heat fluxes causes the MLT and BLT to thicken(thin) but the DLT to thin(thicken), while a stronger(weaker) precipitation favors thinner(thicker)MLT but thicker(thinner) BLT and DLT. 4STIM1 thermosensitivity defines the optimal preference temperature for warm sensation in mice显示文摘Mammals possess a remarkable ability to sense subtle temperature deviations from the thermoneutral skin temperature of -33 ℃, which ensures precise warm sensation.However,the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.Here we show that STIM1,an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)resident transmembrane protein that responds to both ER Ca^2- depletion and heat,mediates temperature-induced Ca^2+ influx in skin keratinocytes via coupling to Orai Ca^2+ channels in plasma membrane.Behaviorally,the keratinocyte-specific knockout of STIM1 shifts the optimal preference temperature (OPT)of mice from -32 ℃ to -34℃,resulting in a strikingly reversed preference between 32℃ and 34℃.Importantly,the thermally inactive STIM1-△K knock-in mice show altered OPT and warm preference behaviors as well,demonstrating the requirement of STIM1 thermosensitivity for warm sensation. 5Validation and correction of sea surface salinity retrieval from SMAP显示文摘In this study, sea surface salinity(SSS) Level 3(L3) daily product derived from soil moisture active passive(SMAP)during the year 2016, was validated and compared with SSS daily products derived from soil Moisture and ocean salinity(SMOS) and in-situ measurements. Generally, the root mean square error(RMSE) of the daily SSS products is larger along the coastal areas and at high latitudes and is smaller in the tropical regions and open oceans. Comparisons between the two types of daily satellite SSS product revealed that the RMSE was higher in the daily SMOS product than in the SMAP, whereas the bias of the daily SMOS was observed to be less than that of the SMAP when compared with Argo floats data. In addition, the latitude-dependent bias and RMSE of the SMAP SSS were found to be primarily influenced by the precipitation and the sea surface temperature(SST). Then, a regression analysis method which has adopted the precipitation and SST data was used to correct the larger bias of the daily SMAP product. 6Kaiso mainly locates in the nucleus in vivo and binds to methylated,but not hydroxymethylated DNA显示文摘Objective:Kaiso is upregulated in many cancers and proposed to bind with both methylated- and unmethylated-DNA in the nucleus as a transcriptional repressor.The objective is to define its subcellular localization in vivo and exact binding DNA sequences in cells.Methods:Compartmentalization of exogenous Kaiso in cells was tracked with enhanced green fluorescence protein(EGFP) tag.The endogenous Kaiso expression in gastric carcinoma tissue was examined with immunohistochemical staining.Kaiso-DNA binding was tested using electrophoretic mobility shift assay(EMSA) and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay(ChIP).Results:Kaiso mainly localized in the nucleus of cancer and stromal cells in vivo,but remained in the cytoplasm of cultured cells.Most importantly,nuclear Kaiso can bind with the methylated-CGCGcontaining sequence in the CDKN2 A promoter,but not with the hydroxymethylated-CGCG sequence in HCT116 cells.Conclusions:Kaiso locates mainly in the nucleus in vivo where it binds with the methylated-CGCG sequences,but does not bind with the hydroxymethylated-CGCG sequences.Sisi Qin Baozhen Zhang Wei Tian Liankun Gu Zheming Lu Dajun Deng 2015Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2015,27,2:1
7Comprehensive experimental database and analysis of circular concrete-filled double-skin tube stub columns:A review显示文摘A concrete-filled double-skin tube(CFDST)is a new type of composite material.Experimental studies have been conducted to investigate the axial compression behavior of CFDST members for approximately 30 years.This paper provides a review of the status of axial compression bearing capacity tests conducted on circular CFDST stub columns as well as a summary of test data for 165 circular CFDST stub columns reported in 22 papers.A relatively complete high-quality test database is established.Based on this database,the main factors affecting the axial compression bearing capacity of the CFDST stub columns are analyzed.The prediction accuracy and robustness of an existing theoretical prediction model,which is a data-driven model,are evaluated,and a numerical simulation of the axial compression bearing capacity of the CFDST stub columns is conducted.In addition,the differences between the basic theory and experimental results of various models are compared,and the possible sources of prediction errors are analyzed.The current model for predicting the axial compression capacity of CFDST stub columns cannot simultaneously satisfy the requirements of high accuracy and confidence,and the stress independency assumption introduced in the test is not valid.The main error source in the theoretical prediction model is the non-simultaneous consideration of the effects of the void ratio and inner steel tube.Hongyuan TANG Hongfei TAN Sisi GE Jieyu QIN Yuzhuo WANG 2023Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering2023,17,12:0

9Variation in reproductive life-history traits of Chinese Bulbuls(Pycnonotus sinensis)along the urbanization gradient in Hangzhou,China显示文摘Urbanization brings new selection pressures to wildlife living in cities,and changes in the life-history traits of urban species can reflect their responses to such pressures.To date,most of the studies investigating the impacts of urbanization on avian life-history traits are conducted in Europe and North America,while such studies are often lacking in quickly developing countries in Asia(e.g.,China).In this study,we examined the variations in reproductive life-history traits of Chinese Bulbuls(Pycnonotus sinensis)along the urbanization gradient in Hangzhou,China.We detected 234 natural nests of Chinese Bulbuls and continuously monitored them in two continuous breeding seasons from 2012 to 2013.We collected data on seven life-history traits(laying date,incubation period,nestling period,clutch size,egg volume,hatching success rate,and fledging success rate).We used infrared cameras to record the number of feedings per hour as the measure of food resources for the nestlings.We measured nest predation pressure by monitoring 148 natural breeding nests during breeding seasons and 54 artificial nests immediately after breeding seasons.We then calculated the urbanization synthetic index(USI)as a measure of the level of urbanization and examined its relationship with the seven life-history traits.We found that Chinese Bulbuls laid eggs significantly earlier with increasing USI.However,the other six life-history traits did not vary significantly with the USI.Moreover,the feeding frequency of chicks increased significantly with the USI,but the nest predation pressure of Chinese Bulbuls decreased significantly with the USI.Increased food resources and reduced nest predation pressure in cities may lead to earlier laying date of Chinese Bulbuls.Further study should test whether the earlier laying date of Chinese Bulbuls is the result of phenotypic plasticity or genetic change.Xingmin Chen Qin Zhang Sisi Lan Qin Huang Shuihua Chen Yanping Wang 2023Avian Research2023,14,2:0
10Effects of Different Farming Methods and Their Effects on Soil Physicochemical Properties of Guilin Maojian Tea Gardens显示文摘In order to further optimize the cultivation and agronomic technology of Guilin Maojian tea gardens,the effects,efficiencies and costs of different farming methods and their effects on the physiochemical properties of tea garden soil were studied through the modification of the test sites with the non-farming land as the control. The results showed that human farming,mini-tiller farming and crawler tractor farming could improve the physical and chemical properties of soil. After farming,the soil had good water retention but low moisture content compared to the control group,while the soil bulk density and hardness value were significantly lower than those of the control,and the porosity of soil was significantly higher than that of contrast. With the passage of time,soil bulk density and hardness value gradually increased after farming,while the porosity of soil decreased gradually. There were great differences in the effects,efficiencies and costs of different farming methods. Crawler tractor had the best and most stable farming effect,and the operation efficiency was 10 times that of human farming while the cost was only 0. 39 times of human farming. Therefore,it was feasible to adopt mini-tiller or crawler tractor to carry out mechanical farming of Guilin Maojian tea garden,which provided theoretical references for the soil property improvement using mechanical farming and was favorable for promoting the popularization of farming machines and the acceleration of mechanization of tea gardens. But for tea plantations that are intended to be mechanized,apart from the mechanical and technical personnel to be configured in place,the site conditions,planting modes and mechanical way reservation of tea garden should be planned accordingly. It is recommended to select flat or gentle slope for reclamation,and preference is given to non-sexual tea tree varieties with big line spacing over 180 cm long. Moreover,the main road construction should be more than 3. 0 m,and trunk road 2. 0 m or above. 11Nest predation pressure on Chinese Bulbuls decreases along the urbanization gradient in Hangzhou,China显示文摘Nest predation is an essential factor affecting bird population density,reproductive ecology and life cycle.However,there are still contradictory results about how nest predation pressure changes with urbanization.One of the reasons for the controversy is that previous studies often use artificial nests to investigate nest predation,but the result of artificial nests is often biased and contrary to that of natural nests.Therefore,it is important to perform nest predation experiments simultaneously with both natural and artificial nests.In this study,we examined the change of nest predation pressure on the Chinese Bulbul(Pycnonotus sinensis)along the urbanization gradient in Hangzhou,China.We detected 148 natural nests of Chinese Bulbuls and continuously monitored them in two continuous breeding seasons from 2012 to 2013.After the breeding season,we placed artificial eggs in natural nests of Chinese Bulbuls to investigate the changes in nest predation pressure and used infrared cameras to record the predators.We then calculated the urbanization synthetic index(USI)as the measure of the degree of urbanization and examined its relationship with nest predation pressure.We found that no matter whether natural nests or artificial eggs were used,the nest predation pressure always decreased significantly with the degree of urbanization.The average height of shrubs within 10 m of the nest differed significantly between the predated and unpredated nests,which also affected the risk of nest predation.Our study highlights the importance of using natural and artificial nests simultaneously to conduct nest predation experiments,which can reduce the bias or errors caused by only using artificial nests.We also recommend the use of infrared cameras in future nest predation studies,which has obvious advantages in monitoring and identifying potential predators.Xingmin Chen Qin Zhang Sisi Lan Shuihua Chen Yanping Wang 2022Avian Research2022,13,3:0
