1Comparison of Postoperative Pain Following Laser-assisted Subepithelial Keratectomy and Transepithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy:a Prospective,Random Paired Bilateral Eye Study显示文摘Purpose:To compare postoperative pain following laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy(LASEK) and transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy(T-PRK, two-step surgery) and alleviate postoperative subjective pain.Methods:.Thirty patients(60 eyes) with myopia or myopic astigmatism were consecutively recruited into this prospective,randomized paired study..Patients underwent LASEK in one eye,and T-PRK in the other. The degree of pain was rated on a scale of 0-10 on postoperative days 1,2 and 3..Uncorrected visual acuity(UCVA) and subepithelial corneal haze were assessed at postoperative 1 and 3 months.Results:.The pain was relieved on the 4th postoperative day in all patients,.healing of corneal epithelium was observed at4-5 days after surgery and contact lenses were removed promptly.At postoperative 1 day,.the mean subjective pain score in the LASEK group was 3.2±1.88 and 4.43±1.61 in TPRK group(P=0.008).No significant difference was found between two groups on postoperative 2 and 3 days. At postoperative 3 months, the percentage of UCVA ≥0.8 in the LASEK group was 100% and 96.7% in the T-PRK group.(P =0.24),93.3% of patients in the LASEK with UCVA ≥1.0 and 90%in the T-PRK group(P=0.64). In the LASEK group, the value of corneal haze was 0.26 ±0.21 and 0.27 ±0.25 in the T-PRK group(P=0.877).Conclusion:.Good visual acuity was obtained in both groups at postoperative 3 months. Compared with those in the T-PRKgroup, patients undergoing had less discomfort in the LASEK group, which may be associated with corneal epithelial activity. 2Preparation of folate-conjugated starch nanoparticles and its application to tumor-targeted drug delivery vector显示文摘Anion starch nanoparticles (StNP) were prepared in water-in-oil microemulsion. Folate modi-fied with PEG was conjugated to the surface of StNP to obtain the folate-conjugated starch nanoparticles (FA-PEG/StNP). The average diameter of FA-PEG/ StNP determined by AFM and Zeta-Sizer apparatus was about 130 nm. Doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded FA- PEG/StNP was obtained via infiltrating combination. The result of UV spectrophotometer showed that the saturation concentration of DOX-loaded FA-PEG/ StNP was 28 μg/mg, which was effective for the con-trolled release of anticancer drug DOX. The cell ex-periments showed that the Lc50 of DOX-loaded FA-PEG/StNP and DOX-loaded StNP was higher than that of DOX, which indicates that FA-PEG/StNP and StNP can decrease the toxicity of DOX; while the lethal rate of DOX-loaded FA-PEG/StNP was 3 times that of DOX-loaded StNP with the same quantity of DOX, which indicates that FA in FA-PEG/StNP is ef-fective for improving the targeting function of nanoparticles, thus enhancing the inhibition effect of anticancer drug to cancer cell. 3Long-term clinical observation of patients with acute and chronic complete spinal cord injury after transplantation of Neuro Regen scaffold显示文摘Spinal cord injury(SCI)often results in an inhibitory environment at the injury site.In our previous studies,transplantation of a scaffold combined with stem cells was proven to induce neural regeneration in animal models of complete SCI.Based on these preclinical studies,collagen scaffolds loaded with the patients’own bone marrow mononuclear cells or human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells were transplanted into SCI patients.Fifteen patients with acute complete SCI and 51 patients with chronic complete SCI were enrolled and followed up for 2 to 5 years.No serious adverse events related to functional scaffold transplantation were observed.Among the patients with acute SCI,five patients achieved expansion of their sensory positions and six patients recovered sensation in the bowel or bladder.Additionally,four patients regained voluntary walking ability accompanied by reconnection of neural signal transduction.Among patients with chronic SCI,16 patients achieved expansion of their sensation level and 30 patients experienced enhanced reflexive defecation sensation or increased skin sweating below the injury site.Nearly half of the patients with chronic cervical SCI developed enhanced finger activity.These long-term follow-up results suggest that functional scaffold transplantation may represent a feasible treatment for patients with complete SCI.Fengwu Tang Jiaguang Tang Yannan Zhao Jiaojiao Zhang Zhifeng Xiao Bing Chen Guang Han Na Yin Xianfeng Jiang Changyu Zhao Shixiang Cheng Ziqiang Wang Yumei Chen Qiaoling Chen Keran Song Zhiwei Zhang Junjie Niu Lingjun Wang Qin Shi Liang Chen Huilin Yang Shuxun Hou Sai Zhang Jianwu Dai 2022Science China(Life Sciences)2022,65,5:3
4Effects of cultivation of Osr HSA transgenic rice on functional diversity of microbial communities in the soil rhizosphere显示文摘With the widespread cultivation of transgenic crops, there is increasing concern about unintended effects of these crops on soil environmental quality. In this study, we used the Biolog method and ELISA to evaluate the possible effects of Osr HSA transgenic rice on soil microbial utilization of carbon substrates under field conditions. There were no significant differences in average well-color development(AWCD) values, Shannon–Wiener diversity index(H), Simpson dominance indices(D) and Shannon–Wiener evenness indices(E) of microbial communities in rhizosphere soils at eight samplings between Osr HSA transgenic rice and its non-transgenic counterpart. The main carbon sources utilized by soil microbes were carbohydrates, carboxylic acids, amino acids and polymers. The types,capacities and patterns of carbon source utilization by microbial communities in rhizosphere soils were similar throughout the detection period. We detected no Osr HSA protein in the roots of Osr HSA transgenic rice. 5Advanced surface engineering of titanium materials for biomedical applications:From static modification to dynamic responsive regulation显示文摘Titanium(Ti)and its alloys have been widely used as orthopedic implants,because of their favorable mechanical properties,corrosion resistance and biocompatibility.Despite their significant success in various clinical applications,the probability of failure,degradation and revision is undesirably high,especially for the patients with low bone density,insufficient quantity of bone or osteoporosis,which renders the studies on surface modification of Ti still active to further improve clinical results.It is discerned that surface physicochemical properties directly influence and even control the dynamic interaction that subsequently determines the success or rejection of orthopedic implants.Therefore,it is crucial to endow bulk materials with specific surface properties of high bioactivity that can be performed by surface modification to realize the osseointegration.This article first reviews surface characteristics of Ti materials and various conventional surface modification techniques involving mechanical,physical and chemical treatments based on the formation mechanism of the modified coatings.Such conventional methods are able to improve bioactivity of Ti implants,but the surfaces with static state cannot respond to the dynamic biological cascades from the living cells and tissues.Hence,beyond traditional static design,dynamic responsive avenues are then emerging.The dynamic stimuli sources for surface functionalization can originate from environmental triggers or physiological triggers.In short,this review surveys recent developments in the surface engineering of Ti materials,with a specific emphasis on advances in static to dynamic functionality,which provides perspectives for improving bioactivity and biocompatibility of Ti implants.Pinliang Jiang Yanmei Zhang Ren Hu Bin Shi Lihai Zhang Qiaoling Huang Yun Yang Peifu Tang Changjian Lin 2023Bioactive Materials2023,,9:2

11Traditional Chinese medicine for acute mountain sickness prevention: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials显示文摘Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) for preventing acute mountain sickness(AMS).Methods: We included randomized controlled trials(RCTs) which evalueded the effect of TCM for preventing AMS, compared with a placebo, no treatment or acetazolamide. The literature was searched in 6major databases. RevMan 5.4 software was used for the meta-analysis. The relative risk for discrete variables and the mean difference for continuous variables with 95% confidence intervals(CIs) were applied to express the effect size. The risk of bias in the included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane risk assessment tool 2.0(RoB 2.0), and the evidence certainty was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment and the Development and Evaluation(GRADE) approach.Results: Twenty RCTs involving 3015 participants and 16 TCM patent drugs were included. The overall risk of bias in the majority of studies(15/20) was of some concerns. In terms of the AMS incidence,Rhodiola rosea(R. rosea, Hong Jing Tian) and Ginkgo biloba(G. biloba, Yin Xing Ye) were equivalent to the placebo/no treatment [RR(95% CI): 0.66(0.43-1.01), 0.82(0.63-1.06), respectively]. The AMS incidence in the G. biloba group was higher than that in the acetazolamide group [RR(95% CI): 2.92(1.69-5.06)]. In terms of improving the AMS symptom score on days 1 and 3 in the plateau, R. rosea and G. biloba were superior to the placebo or no treatment [MD(95% CI):-0.98(-1.71,-0.25),-2.05(-3.14,-0.95), respectively]. The other 14 Chinese patent medicines were evaluated in a single trial, and the majority of the results were negative. The subgroup analysis showed that the effect of R. rosea was related to the intervention time, way of ascending, and altitude.Conclusion: R. rosea and G. biloba were effective in improving AMS symptoms but had no effect in reducing the AMS incidence. There was insufficient evidence to support the use of other TCM patent drugs to prevent AMS. 12Design of a Minimally Actuated Lower Limb Exoskeleton with Mechanical Joint Coupling显示文摘Powered lower limb exoskeletons have traditionally used four or more powered joints to provide ambulation assistance for individuals with spinal cord injury.Exoskeletons with numerous powered joints commonly lost some excellent features of passive orthoses and further decreased utility due to added weight and increased control complexity.This work adopts joints coupling mechanism to design a powered exoskeleton to minimize the number of actuated joints and control complexity.Unlike conventional powered exoskeletons,the joint-coupled-powered exoskeleton only has a single motor-actuated joint for each exoskeleton leg in conjunction with a unique knee coupled system to enable their users to walk,sit,and stand.And two types of joint coupled systems are designed,respectively,hip-knee coupled and knee-ankle coupled.The joint-coupled-powered exoskeleton system allows a single actuator to power the hip motion,and allows activate knee motion through the coupled motions of the hip or ankle.More specifically,when the mechanical coupled system is activated,the knee joint is unlocked,resulting in synchronized hip-knee or ankle-knee flexion and extension.The coupling mechanism is switched on and off at specific phases of the gait(the stance phase and the swing phase)to generate the desired motions.The research work proves that minimal actuated robotic systems with joint coupled could achieve safe and natural walking.Hui Li Hongliu Yu Yingwei Chen Xinyi Tang Duojin Wang Qiaoling Meng Qing Du 2022Journal of Bionic Engineering2022,19,2:0
13Overoxidized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-overoxidized polypyrrole composite films with enhanced electrocatalytic ability for rutin and luteolin determination显示文摘In this study, a simple and effective method was proposed to improve the electrocatalytic ability of overoxidized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-overoxidized polypyrrole composite films modified on glassy carbon electrode for rutin and luteolin determination. The composite electrode was prepared by cyclic voltammetry copolymerization with LiClO_(4)-water as the supporting electrolyte. The peak current of rutin and luteolin on the composite electrode gradually decreased or even disappeared with the increase in the positive potential limit. After incubation in NaOH–ethanol solution with a volume ratio of 1:1, the composite electrodes prepared at positive potential limit greater than 1.5 V exhibited enhanced differential pulse voltammetry peak currents, reduced charge transfer resistance, larger effective specific surface area and higher electron transfer rate constant. The composite electrode prepared in the potential range of 0–1.7 V showed optimal electrocatalytic performance. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that the content of –SO_(2)/–SO and –C=N– groups in the composite film increased significantly after incubation. Further, the Raman spectra and Fourier transform infrared spectra revealed that the thiophene ring structure changed from benzene-type to quinone-type, and the quinone-type pyrrole ring was formed. 14Theoretical Basis of Gene Splitting Technique and Its Application in the Control of Transgene Flow显示文摘Transgenic safety issues cause more and more controversies with the planting area of transgenic crops increased year by year. Gene flow from transgenic crops to wild relatives through pollen dispersal is one of the focus problems. Gene splitting technique provides a new strategy for the control of transgene flow by biological containment. The construction of gene splitting technique is based on protein trans-splicing mediated by intein. Currently,it has been proved in Arabidopsis,tabacco,wheat,etc. that active and functional proteins can be reassembled by intein mediated protein trans-splicing after gene splitting,which provides theoretical basis and experimental supporting for the limit of transgene flow by gene splitting technique. 15Deciphering controversial results of cell proliferation on TiO2 nanotubes using machine learning显示文摘With the rapid development of biomedical sciences,contradictory results on the relationships between biological responses and material properties emerge continuously,adding to the challenge of interpreting the incomprehensible interfacial process.In the present paper,we use cell proliferation on titanium dioxide nanotubes(TNTs)as a case study and apply machine learning methodologies to decipher contradictory results in the literature.The gradient boosting decision tree model demonstrates that cell density has a higher impact on cell proliferation than other obtainable experimental features in most publications.Together with the variation of other essential features,the controversy of cell proliferation trends on various TNTs is understandable.By traversing all combinational experimental features and the corresponding forecast using an exhausted grid search strategy,we find that adjusting cell density and sterilization methods can simultaneously induce opposite cell proliferation trends on various TNTs diameter,which is further validated by experiments.This case study reveals that machine learning is a burgeoning tool in deciphering controversial results in biomedical researches,opening up an avenue to explore the structure-property relationships of biomaterials.Ziao Shen Si Wang Zhenyu Shen Yufei Tang Junbin Xu Changjian Lin Xun Chen Qiaoling Huang 2021Regenerative Biomaterials2021,8,4:0
