1Evaluation of the simulation capability of the Wavewatch Ⅲ model for Pacific Ocean wave显示文摘Wave climate analysis and other applications for the Pacific Ocean require a reliable wave hindcast. Five source and sink term packages in the Wavewatch III model(v3.14 and v4.18) are compared and assessed in this study through comprehensive observations, including altimeter significant wave height, advanced synthetic aperture radar swell, and buoy wave parameters and spectrum. In addition to the evaluation of typically used integral parameters, the spectra partitioning method contributes to the detailed wave system and wave maturity validation. The modified performance evaluation method(PS) effectively reduces attribute numbers and facilitates the overall assessment. To avoid possible misleading results in the root mean square error-based validations, another indicator called HH(indicating the two authors) is also calculated to guarantee the consistency of the results. The widely used Tolman and Chalikov(TC) package is still generally efficient in determining the integral properties of wave spectra but is physically deficient in explaining the dissipation processes. The ST4 package performs well in overall wave parameters and significantly improves the accuracy of wave systems in the open ocean. Meanwhile, the newly published ST6 package is slightly better in determining swell energy variations. The two packages(ACC350 and BJA) obtained from Wavewatch III v3.14 exhibit large scatters at different sea states. The three most ideal packages are further examined in terms of reproducing waveinduced momentum flux from the perspective of transport. Stokes transport analysis indicates that ST4 is the closest to the NDBC-buoy-spectrum-based transport values, and TC and ST6 tend to overestimate and underestimate the transport magnitude, respectively, in swell mixed areas. This difference must be considered,particularly in air–wave–current coupling research and upper ocean analysis. 2Effect of Stokes drift on upper ocean mixing显示文摘Stokes drift is the main source of vertical vorticity in the ocean mixed layer. In the ways of Coriolis-Stokes forcing and Langmuir circulations, Stokes drift can substantially affect the whole mixed layer. A modified Mellor-Yamada 2.5 level turbulence closure model is used to parameterize its effect on upper ocean mixing conventionally. Results show that comparing surface heating with wave breaking, Stokes drift plays the most important role in the entire ocean mixed layer, especially in the subsurface layer. As expected, Stokes drift elevates both the dissipation rate and the turbulence energy in the upper ocean mixing. Also, influence of the surface heating, wave breaking and wind speed on Stokes drift is investigated respectively. Research shows that it is significant and important to assessing the Stokes drift into ocean mixed layer studying. 3Climate and extrema of ocean waves in the East China Sea显示文摘Wave climate plays an important role in the air-sea interaction over marginal seas. Extreme wave height provides fundamental information for various ocean engineering practices, such as hazard mitigation, coastal structure design, and risk assessment. In this paper, we implement a third generation wave model and conduct a high-resolution wave hindcast over the East China Sea to reconstruct a 15-year wave field from 1988 to 2002 for derivation of monthly mean wave parameters and analysis of extreme wave conditions. The numerical results of the wave field are validated through comparison with satellite altimetry measurements, low-resolution reanalysis, and the ocean wave buoy record. The monthly averaged wave height and wave period show seasonal variation and refined spatial patterns of surface waves in the East China Sea. The climatological significant wave height and mean wave period decrease from the open ocean in the southeast toward the continental area in the northwest, with the pattern generally following the bathymetry. Extreme analysis on the significant wave height at the buoy station indicates the hindcast data underestimate the extreme values relative to the observations. 4Effect of Langmuir circulation on upper ocean mixing in the South China Sea显示文摘Effect of Langmuir circulation(LC) on upper ocean mixing is investigated by a two-way wave-current coupled model.The model is coupled of the ocean circulation model ROMS(regional ocean modeling system) to the surface wave model SWAN(simulating waves nearshore) via the model-coupling toolkit.The LC already certified its importance by many one-dimensional(1D) research and mechanism analysis work.This work focuses on inducing LC's effect in a three-dimensional(3-D) model and applying it to real field modeling.In ROMS,the Mellor-Yamada turbulence closure mixing scheme is modified by including LC's effect.The SWAN imports bathymetry,free surface and current information from the ROMS while exports significant wave parameters to the ROMS for Stokes wave computing every 6 s.This coupled model is applied to the South China Sea(SCS) during September 2008 cruise.The results show that LC increasing turbulence and deepening mixed layer depth(MLD) at order of O(10 m) in most of the areas,especially in the north part of SCS where most of our measurements operated.The coupled model further includes wave breaking which will brings more energy into water.When LC works together with wave breaking,more energy is transferred into deep layer and accelerates the MLD deepening.In the north part of the SCS,their effects are more obvious.This is consistent with big wind event in the area of the Zhujiang River Delta.The shallow water depth as another reason makes them easy to influence the ocean mixing as well.LI Shuang SONG Jinbao FAN Wei 2013Acta Oceanologica Sinica2013,32,3:6
5A numerical study on seasonal variations of the thermocline in the South China Sea based on the ROMS显示文摘On the basis of the regional ocean modeling system(ROMS), the seasonal variations of the thermocline in the South China Sea(SCS) were numerically investigated. The simulated hydrodynamics are in accordance with previous studies: the circulation pattern in the SCS is cyclonic in winter and anticyclonic in summer, and such a change is mostly driven by the monsoon winds. The errors between the modeled temperature profiles and the observations obtained by cruises are quite small in the upper layers of the ocean, indicating that the ocean status is reasonably simulated. On the basis of the shapes of the vertical temperature profiles, five thermocline types(shallow thermocline, deep thermocline, hybrid thermocline, double thermocline, and multiple thermocline) are defined herein. In winter, when the northeasterly monsoon prevails, most shallow shelf seas in the northwest of the SCS are well mixed, and there is no obvious thermocline. The deep region generally has a deep thermocline, and the hybrid or double thermocline often occurs in the areas near the cold eddy in the south of the SCS. In summer, when the southwesterly monsoon prevails, the shelf sea area with a shallow thermocline greatly expands. The distribution of different thermocline types shows a relationship with ocean bathymetry: from shallow to deep waters, the thermocline types generally change from shallow or hybrid to deep thermocline, and the double or multiple thermocline usually occurs in the steep regions. The seasonal variations of the three major thermocline characteristics(the upper bound depth, thickness, and intensity) are also discussed. 6Preparation of Highly Crystalline Microcrystalline Cellulose by Hydrolysis of Cellulose with Phosphotungstic Acid显示文摘Phosphotungstic acid(H_3PW_(12)O_(40), HPW), a kind of solid acid, is widely used for hydrolyzing cellulose to prepare microcrystalline cellulose(MCC). MCC is usually used in food, synthetic leather, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The use of response surface methodology(RSM)can help avoid the random error caused by single factor experimental design,reduce test times and cost, and improve quality. The RSM was used in this study to determine the following optimal process conditions: H^+ molar quantity, 31 mmol/L; reaction temperature, 93℃; reaction time, 2 h; and solid to liquid ratio, 1∶38. Under these conditions, the crystallinity of MCC was77.4%. 7Effects of Sea-Surface Waves and Ocean Spray on Air-Sea Momentum Fluxes显示文摘The effects of sea-surface waves and ocean spray on the marine atmospheric boundary layer(MABL) at different wind speeds and wave ages were investigated. An MABL model was developed that introduces a wave-induced component and spray force to the total surface stress. The theoretical model solution was determined assuming the eddy viscosity coefficient varied linearly with height above the sea surface. The wave-induced component was evaluated using a directional wave spectrum and growth rate. Spray force was described using interactions between ocean-spray droplets and wind-velocity shear. Wind profiles and sea-surface drag coefficients were calculated for low to high wind speeds for wind-generated sea at different wave ages to examine surface-wave and ocean-spray effects on MABL momentum distribution. The theoretical solutions were compared with model solutions neglecting wave-induced stress and/or spray stress. Surface waves strongly affected near-surface wind profiles and sea-surface drag coefficients at low to moderate wind speeds. Drag coefficients and near-surface wind speeds were lower for young than for old waves. At high wind speeds, ocean-spray droplets produced by wind-tearing breaking-wave crests affected the MABL strongly in comparison with surface waves, implying that wave age affects the MABL only negligibly. Low drag coefficients at high wind caused by ocean-spray production increased turbulent stress in the sea-spray generation layer, accelerating near-sea-surface wind. 8The effects of wind-driven waves and ocean spray on the drag coefficient and near-surface wind profiles over the ocean显示文摘By introducing a wave-induced component and a spray-induced component to the total stress, a mathematical model based on the Ekman theory is proposed to detail the influence of wind-driven waves and ocean spray on the momentum transport in a marine atmosphere boundary layer(MABL). An analytic solution of the modified Ekman model can be obtained. The effect of the wave-induced stress is evaluated by a wind wave spectrum and a wave growth rate. It is found that the wave-induced stress and spray stress have a small impact compared with the turbulent stress on the drag coefficient and the wind profiles for low-to-medium wind speed. The spray contribution to the surface stress should be much more taken into account than the winddriven waves when the wind speed reaches above 25 m/s through the action of a 'spray stress'. As a result, the drag coefficient starts to decrease with increasing wind speed for high wind speed. The effects of the winddriven waves and spray droplets on the near-surface wind profiles are illustrated for different wave ages, which indicates that the production of the spray droplets leads the wind velocity to increase in the MABL. The solutions are also compared with the existed field observational data. 9The temporal and spatial variations in the Pacific wind and wave fields for the period 2002–2011显示文摘The temporal and spatial variations in the wind and wave fields in the Pacific Ocean between 2002 and 2011 are analyzed using a third-generation wave model(WAVEWATCH III). The model performance for a significant wave height is validated using in situ buoy data. The results show that the wave model effectively hindcasts the significant wave height in the Pacific Ocean, but the errors are relatively large in the mid- and low-latitude regions. The spatial distributions and temporal variations in a wind speed and the significant wave height in the Pacific Ocean are then considered after dividing the Pacific Ocean into five regions, which show meridional differences and seasonal cycles. Regional mean values are used to give yearly average time series for each separate zone. The high latitude region in the Southern Hemisphere had a stronger significant wave height trend in the model results than regions at other latitudes. The sources and sinks of wave energy are then investigated. Their regional mean values are used to quantify variations in surface waves. Finally, the spectral analyses of the daily mean wind speeds and the significant wave heights are obtained. 10Second-order random interfacial wave solutions for two-layer fluid with a free surface显示文摘A previous study (Song. 2004. Geophys Res Lett, 31(15):L15302) of the second-order solutions for random interfacial waves is extend- ed in a constant depth, two-layer fluid system with a rigid lid is extended into a more general case of two-layer fluid with a top free sur- face. The rigid boundary condition on the upper surface is replaced by the kinematical and dynamical boundary conditions of a free surface, and the equations describing the random displacements of free surface, density-interface and the associated velocity potentials in the two-layer fluid are solved to the second order using the same expansion technology as that of Song (2004. Geophys Res Lett, 31 (15):L15302). The results show that the interface and the surface will oscillate synchronously, and the wave fields to the first-order both at the free surface and at the density-interface are made up of a linear superposition of many waves with different amplitudes, wave numbers and frequencies. The second-order solutions describe the second-order wave- wave interactions of the surface wave components, the interface wave components and among the surface and the interface wave components. The extended solutions also include special cases obtained by Thorpe for progressive interfacial waves (Thorpe. 1968a.Trans R Soc London, 263A:563 ̄614) and standing interfacial waves (Thorpe. 1968b. J Fluid Mech, 32:489 ̄528) for the two-layer fluid with a top free surface. 11A motion correction on direct estimations of air-sea fluxes from a buoy显示文摘A flux system deployed on a moored buoy has been described,which is capable of directly estimating the airsea fluxes after removing the contamination in the signal due to buoy motion.A triple loop fitting method has been demonstrated for determining the three angular offsets between measurement axes of the sonic anemometer and motion pack.The data collected in an experiment in the Northern Huanghai Sea is used to correct the three sonic anemometer measurements of turbulent wind for buoy motion.The effective removal of wave-scale motion from the spectra and cospectra are demonstrated.Estimates of along-wind momentum flux,sensible heat flux and latent heat flux calculated by the eddy correlation method based on data obtained by sonic anemometer 81000V are shown to be in the same trend and scale with those determined by the bulk aerodynamic method after motion correction.The motion correction not only greatly improve the estimation of the momentum flux but also has a great impact on the calculated sensible heat flux.HUANG Yansong SONG Jinbao FAN Conghui 2013Acta Oceanologica Sinica2013,32,3:2
12Fine particle-bound PAHs derivatives at mountain background site(Mount Tai)of the North China:Concentration,source diagnosis and health risk assessment显示文摘Ten nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(nPAHs)and 4 oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(oPAHs)in fine particulate matter(PM2.5)samples from Mount Tai were analyzed during summer(June to August),2015.During the observation campaign,themean concentration of total nPAHs and oPAHs was 31.62 pg/m^(3)and 0.15 ng/m^(3),respectively.Two of the monitored compounds,namely 9-nitro-anthracene(9N-ANT)(6.86 pg/m^(3))and 9-fluorenone(9FO)(0.05 ng/m^(3))were the predominant compounds of nPAHs and oPAHs,respectively.The potential source and long-range transportation of nPAHs and oPAHs were investigated by the positive matrix factorization(PMF)method and the potential source contribution function(PSCF)methods.The results revealed that biomass/coal burning,gasoline vehicle emission,diesel vehicle emission and secondary formation were the dominant sources of nPAHs and oPAHs,which were mainly from Henan province and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and Bohai sea.The incremental life cancer risk(ILCR)values were calculated to evaluate the exposure risk of nPAHs and oPAHs for three group people(infant,children and adult),and the values of ILCR were 7.02×10^(−10),3.49×10^(−9)and 1.41×10^(−8)for infant,children and adults,respectively.All these values were lower than the standard of EPA(Environmental Protection Agency)(<10−6),indicating acceptable health risk of nPAHs and oPAHs.Lei Zhao Shanjun Song Penghui Li Jing Liu Jing Zhang Lei Wang Yaqin Ji Jinpeng Liu Liqiong Guo Jinbao Han 2021Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,11:2
13On the parameterization of drag coefficient over sea surface显示文摘Six parameterization schemes of roughness or drag coefficient are evaluated on the basis of the data from six experiments. They present great consistency with measurement when friction velocity u*<0.5 m/s (approximately corresponding to 10 m wind speed U10 <12 m/s) and large deviation from measurement when u*≥0.5 m/s (approximately U10≥12 m/s). In order to improve the deviation, a new parameterization of drag coefficient is derived on the basis of the similarity theory, Charnock relationship and Toba 3/2 power law. Wave steepness and wind-sea Reynolds number are considered in the new parameterization. Then it is tested on the basis of the measurements and shows significant improvement when u*≥0.5 m/s. Its standard errors are much smaller than the ones of the other six parameterizations. 15Air-sea carbon-dioxide flux estimated by eddy covariance method from a buoy observation显示文摘Precise measurements of the CO2 gas transfer across the air-sea interface provide a better understanding of the global carbon cycle.The air-sea CO2 fluxes are obtained by the eddy covariance method and the bulk method from a buoy observation in the northern Huanghai sea.The effects of buoy motion on flux calculated by the eddy covariance method are demonstrated.The research shows that a motion correction can improve the correlation coefficient between the CO2 fluxes estimated from two different levels.Without the CO2-H2 O cross-correlation correction which is termed as PKT correction,the air-sea CO2 fluxes estimated by eddy covariance method using the motion corrected data are nearly an order of magnitude larger than those estimated by the bulk method.After the CO2-H2 O cross-correlation correction,some eddy covariance CO2 fluxes indeed become closer to the bulk CO2 flux,whereas some are overcorrected which are in response to small water vapor flux.HUANG Yansong SONG Jinbao WANG Juanjuan FAN Conghui 2012Acta Oceanologica Sinica2012,31,6:1

17Influence of the earth rotation on the interfacial wave solutions and wave-induced tangential stress in a two-layer fluid system显示文摘Interfacial waves and wave-induced tangential stress are studied for geostrophic small amplitude waves of two-layer fluid with a top free surface and a flat bottom. The solutions were deduced from the general form of linear fluid dynamic equations of two-layer fluid under the f-plane ap-proximation, and wave-induced tangential stress were estimated based on the solutions obtained. As expected, the solutions derived from the present work include as special cases those obtained by Sun et al. (2004. Science in China, Ser. D, 47(12): 1147–1154) for geostrophic small amplitude surface wave solutions and wave-induced tangential stress if the density of the upper layer is much smaller than that of the lower layer. 19Higher-order Boussinesq-type equations for interfacial waves in a two-fluid system显示文摘Interfacial waves propagating along the interface between a three-dimensional two-fluid system with a rigid upper boundary and an uneven bottom are considered. There is a light fluid layer overlying a heavier one in the system, and a small density difference exists between the two layers. A set of higher-order Boussinesq-type equations in terms of the depth-averaged velocities accounting for stronger nonlinearity are derived. When the small parameter measuring frequency dispersion keeping up to lower-order and full nonlinearity are considered, the equations include the Choi and Camassa's results (1999). The enhanced equations in terms of the depth-averaged velocities are obtained by applying the enhancement technique introduced by Madsen et al. (1991) and Schaffer and Madsen (1995a). It is noted that the equations derived from the present study include, as special cases, those obtained by Madsen and Schaffer (1998).
