| 1 | How do medical students understand disease behaviors?Evidence from event-related potentials显示文摘Objective: To investigate how medical students process Western medicine(WM) terms vs. traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) terms and how this is impacted by analogical priming from the perspective of cognitive neuroscience.Methods: The experiments were designed as a 2(TCM terms vs. WM terms) × 2(correct terms vs.incorrect terms) × 2(analogical priming task vs. non-priming task) scheme. A total of 26 medical students completed a non-priming judgment task and an analogical priming judgment task on medical terms. During the tasks, the participants were asked to make correct/incorrect judgments on WM terms and TCM terms, and their behavioral data and event-related potentials(ERPs) were recorded.Results: Behaviorally, the response speed and accuracy of WM terms were higher than those of TCM terms(both P <.001), indicating a prominent concreteness effect. Analogical priming shortened the response time to medical terms(P <.001), and the response time to TCM terms was shortened more significantly(P =.001). For ERPs, WM terms induced a larger P200(an early positive ERP component), a smaller N400(a negative ERP component), and a higher late positive ERP component, indicating superiority of attention adjustment, smaller-scale semantic activation, and a higher cost of late semantic analysis and integration. However, the analogical priming eliminated the difference between WM and TCM terms in P200 and N400 while maintaining it in the LPC. This suggests that WM terms are sensitive to analogical attention adjustment, and TCM terms are susceptible to analogical semantic integration.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that WM and TCM disease behavior terms may initially differ in concreteness or the use of a verbal-linguistic system. Analogy is more conducive to understanding TCM terms. | 2 | Improving photoreduction of CO2 with water to CH4 in a novel concentrated solar reactor显示文摘CO_2 photoreduction is an attractive process which allows the storage of solar energy and synthesis of solar fuels. Many different photocatalytic systems have been developed, while the alternative photo-reactors are still insufficiently investigated. In this work, photoreduction of CO_2 with H_2O into CH_4 was investigated in a modified concentrating solar reactor, using TiO_2 and Pt/TiO_2 as the catalysts. The TiO_2 and Pt/TiO_2 samples were extensively characterized by different techniques including powder X-ray diffraction(XRD), N_2 adsorption/desorption and UV–vis absorption. The catalytic performance of the TiO_2 and Pt/TiO_2 samples in the gas phase was evaluated under unconcentrated and concentrated Xe-lamp light and nature solar light with different concentrating ratios. Various parameters of the reaction system and the catalysts were investigated and optimized to maximize the catalytic performance of CO_2 reduction system. Compared with the normal light irradiation, the TiO_2 and Pt/TiO_2 samples show higher photocatalytic activity(about 6–7 times) for reducing CO_2 into CH_4 under concentrated Xe-lamp light and nature solar light. | 9 | Engineered Bacillus subtilis alleviates intestinal oxidative injury through Nrf2-Keap1 pathway in enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC) K88-infected piglet显示文摘Engineered probiotics can serve as therapeutics based on their ability of produce recombinant immune-stimulating properties.In this study,we built the recombinant Bacillus subtilis WB800 expressing antimicrobial peptide KR32(WB800-KR32)using genetic engineering methods and investigated its protective effects of nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2(Nrf2)-Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1(Keap1)pathway activation in intestinal oxidative disturbance induced by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC)K88 in weaned piglets.Twenty-eight weaned piglets were randomly distributed into four treatment groups with seven replicates fed with a basal diet.The feed of the control group(CON)was infused with normal sterilized saline;meanwhile,the ETEC,ETEC+WB800,and ETEC+WB800-KR32 groups were orally administered normal sterilized saline,5×10^(10)CFU(CFU:colony forming units)WB800,and 5×10^(10)CFU WB800-KR32,respectively,on Days 1-14 and all infused with ETEC K881×10^(10)CFU on Days 15-17.The results showed that pretreatment with WB800-KR32 attenuated ETEC-induced intestinal disturbance,improved the mucosal activity of antioxidant enzyme(catalase(CAT),superoxide dismutase(SOD),and glutathione peroxidase(GPx))and decreased the content of malondialdehyde(MDA).More importantly,WB800-KR32 downregulated genes involved in antioxidant defense(GPx and SOD1).Interestingly,WB800-KR32 upregulated the protein expression of Nrf2 and downregulated the protein expression of Keap1 in the ileum.WB800-KR32 markedly changed the richness estimators(Ace and Chao)of gut microbiota and increased the abundance of Eubacterium_rectale_ATCC_33656 in the feces.The results suggested that WB800-KR32 may alleviate ETEC-induced intestinal oxidative injury through the Nrf2-Keap1 pathway,providing a new perspective for WB800-KR32 as potential therapeutics to regulate intestinal oxidative disturbance in ETEC K88 infection. | Chaoyue WEN Hong ZHANG Qiuping GUO Yehui DUAN Sisi CHEN Mengmeng HAN Fengna LI Mingliang JIN Yizhen WANG | 2023 | Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2023,24,6: | 0 |
| 10 | Broadband electroluminescence from reverse breakdown in individual suspended carbon nanotube pn-junctions显示文摘There are various mechanisms of light emission in carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which give rise to a wide range of spectral emission characteristics that provide important information regarding the underlying physical processes that lead to photon emission. Here, we report spectra obtained from individual suspended CNT dual-gate field effect transistor (FET) devices under different gate and bias conditions. By applying opposite voltages to the gate electrodes (i.e., Vg1 = –Vg2), we are able to create a pn-junction within the suspended region of the CNT. Under forward bias conditions, the spectra exhibit a peak corresponding to E11 exciton emission via thermal (i.e., blackbody) emission occurring at electrical powers around 8 μW, which corresponds to a power density of approximately 0.5 MW/cm2. On the other hand, the spectra observed under reverse bias correspond to impact ionization and avalanche emission, which occurs at electrical powers of ~ 10 nW and exhibits a featureless flat spectrum extending from 1,600 nm to shorter wavelengths up to 600 nm. Here, the hot electrons generated by the high electric fields (~ 0.5 MV/cm) are able to produce high energy photons far above the E11 (ground state) energy. It is somewhat surprising that these devices do not exhibit light emission by the annihilation of electrons and holes under forward bias, as in a light emitting diode (LED).
