1The effect of acupuncture on mood and working memory in patients with depression and schizophrenia显示文摘BACKGROUND: In patients with depression, as well as in patients with schizophrenia, both mood and working memory performance are often impaired. Both issues can only be addressed and improved with medication to some extent.OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the mood and the working memory performance in patients with depression or schizophrenia and whether acupuncture can improve these.DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS: A pragmatic clinical trial design was used. The study was conducted in a psychiatric clinic. Fifty patients with depression and 50 with schizophrenia were randomly divided into an experimental and a waiting-list group. Additionally, 25 healthy control participants were included. Twelve weeks of individualized acupuncture treatment was used as the clinical intervention. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: All patients were tested before(T1) and after(T2) acupuncture treatment on a mood scale(Beck Depression Inventory-II, BDI-II), a simple working memory task(digit span), and a complex working memory task(letter-number sequencing); the healthy controls were tested at T1 only.RESULTS: Patients with depression scored worse than the others on the BDI-II, and patients with schizophrenia scored worse than the healthy controls. On the digit span, patients with schizophrenia did not differ from healthy controls whereas they scored worse of all on the letter-number sequencing. With respect to the acupuncture fi ndings, fi rst, the present study showed that the use of acupuncture to treat patients with schizophrenia was both practical and safe. Moreover, acupuncture had a positive effect on the BDI-II for the depression group, but acupuncture had no effect on the digit span and on the letternumber sequencing performance for the two clinical groups.CONCLUSION: The clinical improvement in patients with depression after acupuncture treatment was not accompanied by any signifi cant change in a simple working memory task or in a more complex working memory task; the same was true for the patients with schizophrenia.Peggy Bosch Maurits van den Noort Sujung Yeo Sabina Lim Anton Coenen Gilles van Luijtelaar 2015Journal of Integrative Medicine2015,13,6:5
2Moutan Cortex Radicis inhibits the nigrostriatal damage in a 6-OHDA-induced Parkinson's disease model显示文摘The traditionally used oriental herbal medicine Moutan Cortex Radicis [MCR; Paeonia Suffruticosa Andrews(Paeoniaceae)] exerts anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and analgesic effects. In the present study, we investigated the therapeutic effects of differently fractioned MCR extracts in a 6-hydroxydopamine(OHDA)-induced Parkinson's disease model and neuro-blastoma B65 cells. Ethanol-extracted MCR was fractionated by n-hexane, butanol, and distilled water. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were treated first with 20 μg of 6-OHDA, followed by three MCR extract fractions(100 or 200 mg·kg^(-1)) for 14 consecutive days. In the behavioral rotation experiment, the MCR extract-treated groups showed significantly decreased number of net turns compared with the 6-OHDA control group. The three fractions also significantly inhibited the reduction in tyrosine hydroxylase-positive cells in the substantia nigra pars compacta following 6-OHDA neurotoxicity. Western blotting analysis revealed significantly reduced tyrosine hydroxylase expression in the substantia nigra pars compacta in the 6-OHDA-treated group, which was significantly inhibited by the n-hexane or distilled water fractions of MCR. B65 cells were exposed to the extract fractions for 24 h prior to addition of 6-OHDA for 30 min; treatment with n-hexane or distilled water fractions of MCR reduced apoptotic cell death induced by 6-OHDA neurotoxicity and inhibited nitric oxide production and neuronal nitric oxide synthase expression. These results showed that n-hexane-and distilled water-fractioned MCR extracts inhibited 6-OHDA-induced neurotoxicity by suppressing nitric oxide production and neuronal nitric oxide synthase activity, suggesting that MCR extracts could serve as a novel candidate treatment for the patients with Parkinson's disease.Yeong-Gon Choi Yeon-Mi Hong Li-Hua Kim Sujung Yeo Sabina Lim 2018Chinese Journal of Natural Medicines2018,16,7:4

83D cellular visualization of intact mouse tooth using optical clearing without decalcification显示文摘Dental pulp is composed of nerves, blood vessels, and various types of cells and surrounded by a thick and hard enamel-dentin matrix.Due to its importance in the maintenance of tooth vitality, there have been intensive efforts to analyze the complex cellularlevel organization of the dental pulp in teeth.Although conventional histologic analysis has provided microscopic images of the dental pulp,3-dimensional (3D) cellular-level visualization of the whole dental pulp in an intact tooth has remained a technically challenging task. This is mainly due to the inevitable disruption and loss of microscopic structural features during the process of mechanical sectioning required for the preparation of the tooth sample for histological observation. To accomplish 3D microscopic observation of thick intact tissue, various optical clearing techniques have been developed mostly for soft tissue, and their application for hard tissues such as bone and teeth has only recently started to be investigated. In this work,we established a simple and rapid optical clearing technique for intact mouse teeth without the time-consuming process of decalcification. We achieved 3D cellular-level visualization of the microvasculature and various immune cell distributions in the whole dental pulp of mouse teeth under normal and pathologic conditions. This technique could be used to enable diverse research methods on tooth development and regeneration by providing 3D visualization of various pulpal cells in intact mouse teeth.Sujung Hong Jingu Lee Jin Man Kim Sun-Young Kim Hyung-Ryong Kim Pilhan Kim 2019International Journal of Oral Science2019,11,3:1

11Electroplasticity in the Al_(0.6) CoCrFeNiMn high entropy alloy subjected to electrically-assisted uniaxial tension显示文摘Electrically assisted deformation(EAD)was adopted in this work to overcome the shortcomings such as poor formability and easy cracking in the processing of dual-phase the Al_(0.6) CoCrFeNiMn high entropy al-loy(HEA)at room temperature.Electroplasticity of the Al_(0.6) CoCrFeNiMn HEA was studied systematically using electrically assisted uniaxial tension. The results showed that pulse current caused the temperature gradient along the tensile direction and the temperatures of the samples increased with the current den-sity.The flow stress decreased, and the elongation increased with increasing current density during the EAD.When the current density was 30 A mm-2,the total elongation of the samples could be increased by 50%compared to that with no pulse.Pulse current can reduce local stress concentration and post-pone microcracks initiation in the body-centered cubic(BCC)phases, and hence can effectively inhibit cracks and ruptures. The dislocation tangles were opened by pulse current, and the dislocation recovery was enhanced at a high current density.Compared with dilute solid solution alloys, the lattice distortion effect, the high fraction of the BCC phases, and the dislocations in HEAs can lead to the enhancement of the local Joule heating, which accelerated dislocation slip and dislocation annihilation. This study con-firms that EAD can effectively im prove the formability of HEAs and provides theoretical guidance and an experimental basis for forming HEAs components.Zhiqin Yang Jianxing Bao Chaogang Ding Sujung Son Zhiliang Ning Jie Xu Debin Shan Bin Guo Hyoung Seop Kim 2023Journal of Materials Science & Technology2023,,17:1
12Efficacy of acupuncture on cardiovascular complications in patients with diabetes mellitus in Korea:A nationwide retrospective cohort显示文摘Objective The main aim of this study is to investigate whether acupuncture could be an effective complementary treatment for reducing the risk of macrovascular complications in diabetic patients currently taking antidiabetic medications using a nationwide population-based database. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study to assess the efficacy of acupuncture on cardiovascular complications in diabetic patients using data from patients between 40 and 79 years of age, newly diagnosed with diabetes between 2003 and 2006,found in the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort(NHIS-NSC)in Korea. From the data,we identified 21,232 diabetic patients who were taking antidiabetic medication between 2003 and 2006.The selected patients were divided into two groups-those who received acupuncture at least three times and those who received no acupuncture(non-acupuncture)in the year following their diagnosis of diabetes. After 1:1 propensity score matching(PSM),each group had 3350 patients, and the observation ceased at the occurrence of a major adverse cardiovascular event(MACE),which was defined as either myocardial infarction, stroke,or death due to cardiovascular cause. Results After PSM,the acupuncture group had a lower incidence of MACE(hazard ratio[HR]:0.87;95%confidence interval[CI]:0.81-0.94;P=0.0003)and all-cause mortality(HR:0.77;95%CI:0.70-0.84;P<0.0001)than the non-acupuncture group;the HRs for stroke-related mortality(HR:0.75;95%CI:0.56-1.00;P=0.0485),ischemic heart disease mortality(HR:0.53;95%CI:0.34-0.84;P=0.006)and circulatory system disease mortality(HR:0.67;95%CI:0.55-0.82;P<0.0001)were lower in the acupuncture group than in the non-acupuncture group in the secondary analysis. Conclusion Our results indicate that diabetic patients receiving acupuncture treatment might have a lower risk of MACE,all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality. This population-based retrospective study suggests beneficial effects of acupuncture in preventing macrovascular complications associated with diabetes. These findings call for further prospective cohort or experimental studies on acupuncture treatment for cardiovascular complications of diabetes.Hyejin Jung Tiana Won Ga-Yeon Kim Jowon Jang Sujung Yeo Sabina Lim 2023Journal of Integrative Medicine2023,21,2:0

14Acupuncture treatment of a male patient suffering from long-term schizophrenia and sleep disorders显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of chronic schizophrenia and co-morbid sleep disorders.METHODS: A 42-year-old German male outpatient, suffering from long-term schizophrenia and sleep disorders, entered the study. Acupuncture was used as a non-pharmacological intervention. In addition to his ongoing Western Medicine(pharmacological) treatment, the patient received 12 weekly(non-standardized) acupuncture treatments in the clinic. The Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) diagnosis, the psychological assessment and the actiwatch data were compared before and after the acupuncture treatment.RESULTS: The TCM diagnosis revealed a Liver Fire pattern before the acupuncture treatment, which was still present, although to a lesser degree, after the treatment. The psychological assessment revealed no change in the positive symptoms, but a small decrease in the negative symptoms and the general psychopathology of the patient. This was further illustrated by the small decrease in the number of depressive symptoms. The subjective sleep disorders improved markedly after acupuncture treatment, but the daytime sleepiness did not. The actiwatch results showed that after acupuncture treatment, the patient was moving less during sleep, but no significant results were found for the other sleep parameters.CONCLUSION: Acupuncture was found to be an effective non-pharmacological add-on method for treating subjective sleep disorders, and, to a lesser degree, objective sleep disorders and the negative symptoms of chronic schizophrenia. Future larger clinical trials with follow-up measurements are needed in order to replicate the present preliminary beneficial acupuncture findings and in order to determine whether the observed effects can be sustained.Peggy Bosch Heike Staudte Sujung Yeo Sook-Hyun Lee Sabina Lim Maurits van den Noort 2017Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2017,37,6:0
15Non-Fullerene-Based Inverted Organic Photovoltaic Device with Long-Term Stability显示文摘In this work,we developed the PM6:Y6-based inverted structure organic photovoltaic(i-OPV)with improved power conversion efficiency(PCE)and long-term stability by resolving the origins of the performance deterioration. The deep defects between the metal oxide-based electron transport layer and bulk-heterojunction photoactive layer interface were responsible for suboptimal PCE and facilitated degradation of devices. While the density of deep traps is increased during the storage of i-OPV,the penetrative oxygen-containing defects additionally generated shallow traps below the band-edge of Y6,causing an additional loss in the open-circuit voltage. The suppression of interfacial defects by chemical modification effectively improved the PCE and long-term stability of i-OPV.The modified i-OPV(mi-OPV)achieved a PCE of 17.42%,which is the highest value among the reported PM6:Y6-based i-OPV devices.Moreover,long-term stability was significantly improved:~90%and~80%retention of its initial PCE after 1200 h of air storage and illumination, respectively.Do Hui Kim Febrian T.A.Wibowo Dongchan Lee Narra V.Krishna Sujung Park Shinuk Cho Sung-Yeon Jang 2023Energy & Environmental Materials2023,6,3:0

17Stem cell-derived three-dimensional (organoid) models of Alzheimer's disease: a precision medicine approach显示文摘The major challenges of the 'brain disorders' field-dementia,schizophrenia,other neuropsychiatric disorders-are that these are defined by clinical phenotypes whose underlying biology is poorly understood. There is great variability in definition, prognosis, trajectory, and treatment response indicating that the next step is defining subgroups by combining clinical and biologic information at the level of the individual. These challenges are especially relevant and urgent in the case of dementia and related disorders.Sujung Jun Kim Jiaxin Li Vasiliki Mahairaki 2021Neural Regeneration Research2021,16,8:0
18Enhanced charge separation by interchain hole delocalization in nonfullerene acceptor-based bulk heterojunction materials显示文摘Bulk heterojunction(BHJ)composites show improved power conversion efficiencies when optimized in terms of morphology using various film processing methods.A reduced carrier recombination loss in an optimized BHJ was characterized previously. However, the driving force that leads to this reduction was not clearly understood. In this study,we focus on the decreased carrier recombination loss and its driving force in optimized nonfullerene acceptor-based PTB7-Th:IEICO-4F BHJ composites. We demonstrate that the optimized BHJ shows deactivation in the sub-nanosecond nongeminate carrier recombination process. The driving force for this deactivation was determined to be the improved interchain hole delocalization between the polymers. An enhanced interchain hole delocalization was observed using steady-state photoinduced absorption(PIA)spectroscopy. In particular, increased splitting between the polaron PIA bands was noted. Moreover, improved interchain hole delocalization was observed for other state-of-the-art BHJ materials, including D18:Y6 with optimized morphologies.Chang-Mok Oh Sujung Park Jihoon Lee Sung Heum Park Shinuk Cho In-Wook Hwang 2023Carbon Energy2023,5,7:0
