| 1 | Emergence and prevalence of naturally occurring lower virulent African swine fever viruses in domestic pigs in China in 2020显示文摘African swine fever virus(ASFV)has been circulating in China for more than two years,and it is not clear whether the biological properties of the virus have changed.Here,we report on our surveillance of ASFVs in seven provinces of China,from June to December,2020.A total of 22 viruses were isolated and characterized as genotype II ASFVs,with mutations,deletions,insertions,or short-fragment replacement occurring in all isolates compared with Pig/HLJ/2018(HLJ/18),the earliest isolate in China.Eleven isolates had four different types of natural mutations or deletion in the EP402R gene and displayed a nonhemadsorbing(non-HAD)phenotype.Four isolates were tested for virulence in pigs;two were found to be as highly lethal as HLJ/18.However,two non-HAD isolates showed lower virulence but were highly transmissible;infection with 106 TCID50 dose was partially lethal and caused acute or sub-acute disease,whereas 103 TCID50 dose caused non-lethal,sub-acute or chronic disease,and persistent infection.The emergence of lower virulent natural mutants brings greater difficulty to the early diagnosis of ASF and creates new challenges for ASFV control. | Encheng Sun Zhenjiang Zhang Zilong Wang Xijun He Xianfeng Zhang Lulu Wang Wenqing Wang Lianyu Huang Fei Xi Haoyue Huangfu Ghebremedhin Tsegay Hong Huo Jianhong Sun Zhijun Tian Wei Xia Xuewu Yu Fang Li Renqiang Liu Yuntao Guan Dongming Zhao Zhigao Bu | 2021 | Science China(Life Sciences)2021,64,5: | 46 |

| 4 | Disaster Risk Reduction Efforts in the Greater Horn of Africa显示文摘This article assesses the current state of disaster risk reduction(DRR) in the Greater Horn of Africa(GHA),and focuses on interventions and policies to mitigate hydrometeorological risks. The research analyzes, as main case study, the program 'Regional Climate Prediction and Risk Reduction in the Greater Horn of Africa'funded by the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance(USAID OFDA) in the early 2000 that targeted risk preparedness.The research method combines a desk review of relevant documents and research papers with surveys and interviews directed to key proponents of DRR across the GHA. Results highlight current strengths and weaknesses in the way DRR is implemented in the GHA. Significant improvements in the climate-forecasting capabilities in the GHA since the 2000 s are acknowledged, but the practice of DRR remains technology driven and impacts on the ground are limited. The key findings highlight the significant communication gaps that exist between the producers of climate information and their end users, the communities at risk. | 5 | Novel P22-monoclonal antibody based blocking ELISA for the detection of African swine fever virus antibodies in serum显示文摘African swine fever(ASF)is a highly infectious,transboundary viral disease of domestic and wild pigs,and is currently the most serious threat to world swine production,resulting in significant economic loss.In the absence of vaccines and treatments,the control of the disease entirely depends on accurate and early diagnosis accompanied by the culling of infected pigs.Thus,a highly specific and sensitive diagnostic assay is required during an outbreak and surveillance of the disease.In this study,a highly sensitive,specific,rapid and repeatable P22-monoclonal antibody-based blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(bELISA)assay was developed for the detection of antibodies against genotype I and II African swine fever viruses(ASFVs).A total of 806 pig serum samples were tested to evaluate the performance of the diagnostic assay.To determine the PI(percent Inhibition)cut-off value,receiver-operating characteristic(ROC)analysis was applied.According to the ROC analysis of the data,98.10%specificity and 100%sensitivity were recorded when the threshold cut-off value of PI was established at 47%.In addition,the assay was able to detect ASFV antibodies as early as 9 days post-infection when serum samples from experimentally infected pigs were used.Taking all together,the results of the present study indicated that the P22-mAb based bELISA assay can be used for rapid and accurate detection of antibodies against ASFV,which could play a valuable role in the containment and prevention of ASFV as an alternative to other serological diagnostic methods.Also,this study will assist researchers to further investigate the immunogenic importance of P22 protein in ASFV infection. | Ghebremedhin Tsegay Weldu Tesfagaber Yuanmao Zhu Xijun He Wan Wang Zhenjiang Zhang Encheng Sun Jinya Zhang Yuntao Guan Fang Li Renqiang Liu Zhigao Bu Dongming Zhao | 2022 | Biosafety and Health2022,4,4: | 2 |
| 6 | Numerical reconstruction of microstructure of graphite anode of lithium-ion battery显示文摘Due to the presence of graphite flake cascades,the real graphite anode of Li-ion battery shows non-isotropic characteristic. The present work developed an ellipsoid-based simulated annealing method and numerically reconstructed the three-dimensional microstructure of a graphite anode. The reconstructed anode is a composite of three clearly distinguished phases: pore(or electrolyte),graphite, and solid additives, well representing the nonisotropic heterogeneous characteristic of real graphite anode. Characterization analysis of the reconstructed electrode gives information such as the connectivity of individual phase, the specific interfacial area between solid and pore phase, and the pore size distribution. The effects of the ellipsoid size on the structural characteristics of graphite anode were particularly studied. | 8 | Spatially explicit statistical modeling of random and systematic land cover transitions in the main grassland plain of Nech Sar National Park, Ethiopia显示文摘The main grassland plain of Nech Sar National Park(NSNP)is a federally managed protected area in Ethiopia designated to protect endemic and endangered species.However,like other national parks in Ethiopia,the park has experienced significant land cover change over the past few decades.Indeed,the livelihoods of local populations in such developing countries are entirely dependent upon natural resources and,as a result,both direct and indirect anthropogenic pressures have been placed on natural parks.While previous research has looked at land cover change in the region,these studies have not been spatially explicit and,as a result,knowledge gaps in identifying systematic transitions continue to exist.This study seeks to quantify the spatial extent and land cover change trends in NSNP,identify the strong signal transitions,and identify and quantify the location of determinants of change.To this end,the author classifies panchromatic aerial photographs in 1986,multispectral SPOT imagery in 2005,and Sentinel imagery in 2019.The spatial extent and trends of land cover change analysis between these time periods were conducted.The strong signal transitions were systematically identified and quantified.Then,the basic driving forces of the change were identified.The locations of these transitions were also identified and quantified using the spatially explicit statistical model.The analysis revealed that over the past three decades(1986–2019),nearly 52%of the study area experienced clear landscape change,out of which the net change and swap change attributed to 39%and 13%,respectively.The conversion of woody vegetation to grassland(~5%),subsequently grassland-to-open-overgrazed land(28.26%),and restoration of woody vegetation(0.76%)and grassland(0.72%)from riverine forest and open-overgrazed land,respectively,were found to be the fully systematic transitions whereas the rest transitions were recorded either partly systematic or random transitions.The location of these most systematic land cover transitions identified through the spatially explicit statistical modeling showed drivers due to biophysical conditions,accessibility,and urban/market expansions,coupled with successive government policies for biodiversity management,geo-politics,demographic,and socioeconomic factors.These findings provide important insights into biodiversity loss,land degradation,and ecosystem disruption.Therefore,the model for predicted probability generally suggests a 0.75 km and 0.72 km buffers which are likely to protect forest and grassland from conversion to grassland and open-overgrazed land,respectively. | Kiros Tsegay Deribew | 2019 | Ecological Processes2019,8,1: | 1 |

| 14 | Effect of exclosure ages on woody plant structure,diversity and regeneration potential in the western Tigray region of Ethiopia显示文摘Exclosure is a method of rehabilitating degraded lands by protecting them from the interference of animals and from human encroachment, and is used to regenerate native vegetation as a way to reduce soil erosion, increase rain water infiltration and provide fodder and woody biomass in degraded grazing lands. Therefore, we studied woody plant structure, diversity and regeneration potentials in 5-and 10-year grazing exclosures in comparison with open grazed sites in a semi-arid environment. Data on species diversity, abundance, structure, basal area, frequency, density, and regeneration status were collected from 270 sample plots. Forty-one woody species representing 20 families were identified, with 18, 28 and 38 species found in open grazed areas, and in 5-and 10-year grazing exclosures, respectively. The 10-year grazing exclosures had a higher(P <0.05) species richness and plant densities compared to the 5-year grazing exclosures and the open grazed areas. The population structure and regeneration status of woody species in both grazing exclosures showed an inverted J-shape, indicating a healthy regeneration status, whereas hampered regeneration was observed in open grazed areas. Although several studies have been focused on the various effects of risk in construction projects, limited efforts have been made to investigate the typical and the overall schedule delay risk. In this study, our aim is to detect the typical and overall schedule delay risk throughout the construction project lifecycle, which consists of the pre-construction, construction, and post-construction stages, and compare the stages with each other. Common criteria, sub-criteria, and attributes were developed for all alternatives for the purpose of making a risk decision. The methodology that was followed integrated the multiplecriteria decision-making(MCDM) model of fuzzy analytic hierarchy process comprehensive evaluation(FAHPCE)and the relative important index(RII). Data were collected from 77 participants, who were selected through purposive sampling from different contracting organizations in Ethiopian construction projects by means of questionnaires that were distributed to experienced experts. The findings showed that there is a typical delay risk either in the type or in the level of the different construction activities.Consequently, the most influenced alternative is the construction stage because of the high-risk responsibility,resource, and contract condition related criteria. The postconstruction stage was the second most influenced stage because of the high-risk responsibility-related criteria. The pre-constructed stage was the least influenced stage that consist high-risk criteria of responsibility, resource, and contract condition related. | 17 | Biology and resource acquisition of mistletoes,and the defense responses of host plants显示文摘Background:Mistletoes are the most successful group of obligatory hemi-parasitic flowering plants that attach to the host via haustorium for obtaining water and minerals.This review aims to assess the current knowledge on mistle-toes host plant recognition,haustorium formation,water/minerals acquisition,and host plants’defense signaling and responses against mistletoe attack.Results:Some mistletoes are host-specific while others are generalists occurring on a wide range of vascular plants.The host nitrogen(N)content,parasite–host chemical interactions,compatibility,and dispersal agents are the main determinant factors for host specificity.Mistletoes take up substantial amounts of water and minerals passively via apoplastic routes,and most are xylem feeders,but could shift to phloem-feeding during the physiological stress of the host plants.Current evidence highlighted that cell wall loosening and modification are critical during the development of the haustorium in the host tissue.This is made possible by the application of physical pressures by the developing haustorium and cell wall degradation using enzymes(xyloglucan endotransglycosylases,glucanase,expansins,etc.)produced by the mistletoe.Host plants defend against mistletoe infection mechanically by producing spines,lignin,suberin,etc.,which discourages dispersers,and chemically defend by killing the infector or inhibiting the establishment of the haustorium using their secondary metabolites such as terpenes,phenolics,and N-containing compounds.Although the host plants’response to mistletoe attack resembles the response to other biotic stresses,unlike short-term stressors,the effect of mistletoe attack is long-term and depends on the parasite load.Infection by mistletoe leads to water and nutrient stress of the host plant and deteriorates its healthy establishment and survival.Conclusion:Mistletoes are heterogeneous group in the order Santalales which have versatile mechanisms for pollination,seed dispersal and nutrient acquisition from host plants.Infection by mistletoes triggers host plant responses,varying from mechanical to chemical mechanisms which are analogous to herbivory defences,and negatively impacts host plant growth and reproduction. | Meseret Muche A.Muthama Muasya Berhanu Abraha Tsegay | 2022 | Ecological Processes2022,11,1: | 1 |

| 20 | Spatiotemporal analysis of urban growth on forest and agricultural land using geospatial techniques and Shannon entropy method in the satellite town of Ethiopia,the western fringe of Addis Ababa city显示文摘Rapid conversion of conserved land and cropland to non-agricultural purposes is threatening the ecological areas and dominant agricultural activities that are the main sources of livelihood in urban fringe areas of Addis Ababa City.The combinations of government policy,socioeconomic,demographic dynamics,and biophysical triggers have driven such transformation.However,the recent fast urban expansion and infrastructural development could have accelerated the severity and rate at which urban growth impacts the ecosystem and fertile agricultural land.Yet,little attention is given about their impacts on forest and farming communities in the western fringe areas of Addis Ababa during the recent past.This study,therefore,aimed at quantifying and analyzing the trends of the urban growth and its impacts on flora and agricultural land in Sebeta-Awas town using an integrated GIS tool,remote sensing technique,and Shannon entropy method.Landsat TM of 1986,ETM+of 2002,and OLI of 2019 were used to produce land use/land cover(LULC)classes.Object-based classification technique was carried out to generate the LULC and to measure the changes in the urban land-use class within the satellite town in the year 1986,2002,and 2019.Shannon entropy method was applied to model study area’s urban sprawl,growth trend,and spatial change.Over the past three decades(1986-2019),Sebeta-Awas town has experienced severe urban sprawl following lack of proper development control and management.The annual urban growth rates of 1.2,5.5,and~15%for the periods of 1986,2002,and 2019,respectively were obtained mainly at the expenses of agricultural land(25.48%)and forest land(16.6%),catalyzed urban sprawl which finally led to serious deforestation and reduction in rural farmland.The findings indicate that the average of entropy index increased from 0.02 in the year 1986 to 0.996 in the year 2019,indicating more dispersed urban growth to the outskirts,and spatially indicating anticlockwise shifting.In this regard,more than 90.2%of forest loss due to agricultural encroachment,built-up area expansion,and construction was widely observed in Sebeta and Alem Gena areas,of course,Northeast zone in this study.It is concluded that deforestation and continual evacuation of farming communities in the urban fringe areas due to rapid urban expansion in the name of investment and infrastructural development is expected to be worsened in the near future unless strong policy revision and management actions are undertaken. | Kiros Tsegay Deribew | 2020 | Ecological Processes2020,9,1: | 0 |
