Potential and challenges of tannins as an alternative to in-feed antibiotics for farm animal production显示文摘Naturally occurring plant compounds including tannins, saponins and essential oils are extensively assessed as natural alternatives to in-feed antibiotics.Tannins are a group of polyphenolic compounds that are widely present in plant region and possess various biological activities including antimicrobial,anti-parasitic, anti-viral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulation, etc. Therefore, tannins are the major research subject in developing natural alternative to in-feed antibiotics.Strong protein affinity is the well-recognized property of plant tannins, which has successfully been applied to ruminant nutrition to decrease protein degradation in the rumen, and thereby improve protein utilization and animal production efficiency.Incorporations of tannin-containing forage in ruminant diets to control animal pasture bloat, intestinal parasite and pathogenic bacteria load are another 3 important applications of tannins in ruminant animals.Tannins have traditionally been regarded as 'anti-nutritional factor' for monogastric animals and poultry, but recent researches have revealed some of them, when applied in appropriate manner, improved intestinal microbial ecosystem, enhanced gut health and hence increased productive performance. The applicability of plant tannins as an alternative to in-feed antibiotics depends on many factors that contribute to the great variability in their observed efficacies.Qianqian Huang Xiuli Liu Guoqi Zhao Tianming Hu Yuxi Wang 2018Animal Nutrition2018,,2:54
Internet of Things to network smart devices for ecosystem monitoring显示文摘Smart, real-time, low-cost, and distributed ecosystem monitoring is essential for understanding and managing rapidly changing ecosystems. However, new techniques in the big data era have rarely been introduced into operational ecosystem monitoring, particularly for fragile ecosystems in remote areas. We introduce the Internet of Things(IoT) techniques to establish a prototype ecosystem monitoring system by developing innovative smart devices and using IoT technologies for ecosystem monitoring in isolated environments. The developed smart devices include four categories: large-scale and nonintrusive instruments to measure evapotranspiration and soil moisture, in situ observing systems for CO2 and d13 C associated with soil respiration, portable and distributed devices for monitoring vegetation variables, and Bi-CMOS cameras and pressure trigger sensors for terrestrial vertebrate monitoring. These new devices outperform conventional devices and are connected to each other via wireless communication networks. The breakthroughs in the ecosystem monitoring IoT include new data loggers and longdistance wireless sensor network technology that supports the rapid transmission of data from devices to wireless networks. The applicability of this ecosystem monitoring IoT is verified in three fragile ecosystems, including a karst rocky desertification area, the National Park for Amur Tigers, and the oasis-desert ecotone in China. By integrating these devices and technologies with an ecosystem monitoring information system, a seamless data acquisition, transmission, processing, and application IoT is created. The establishment of this ecosystem monitoring IoT will serve as a new paradigm for ecosystem monitoring and therefore provide a platform for ecosystem management and decision making in the era of big data.Xin Li Ning Zhao Rui Jin Shaomin Liu Xiaomin Sun Xuefa Wen Dongxiu Wu Yan Zhou Jianwen Guo Shiping Chen Ziwei Xu Mingguo Ma Tianming Wang Yonghua Qu Xinwei Wang Fangming Wu Yuke Zhou 2019Science Bulletin2019,64,17:10
A water-evaporation-induced self-charging hybrid power unit for application in the Internet of Things显示文摘A self-charging hybrid power unit has been developed by integrating a water-evaporation-induced nano- generator with a flexible nano-patterned supercapacitor. The nanogenerator can harvest environmental thermal energy and mechanical energy through the water evaporation process, and the supercapacitor can be charged simultaneously. The former offers stable electrical power as output, whereas the Ppy- based supercapacitor shows a capacitance of 12.497 m F/cm^2 with 96.42% retention after 4,000 cycles. After filling the power unit with water as the fuel, it can be fully charged in about 20 min. The power unit can be flexibly integrated with electronic devices such as sensor nodes and wireless transmitters employ- ing the Internet of Things. This new approach can offer new possibilities in continuous future operation of randomly distributed electronic devices incorporated in the Internet of Things.Haoxuan He Tianming Zhao Hongye Guan Tianyan Zhong Hui Zeng Lili Xing Yan Zhang Xinyu Xue 2019Science Bulletin2019,64,19:5

Wearable Battery-Free Perspiration Analyzing Sites Based on Sweat Flowing on ZnO Nanoarrays显示文摘We fabricated wearable perspiration analyzing sites for actively monitoring physiological status during exercises without any batteries or other power supply. The device mainly consists of ZnO nanowire(NW)arrays and flexible polydimethylsiloxane substrate.Sweat on the skin can flow into the flow channels of the device through capillary action and flow along the channels to ZnO NWs.The sweat flowing on the NWs(with lactate oxidase modification)can output a DC electrical signal, and the outputting voltage is dependent on the lactate concentration in the sweat as the biosensing signal.ZnO NWs generate electric double layer(EDL)in sweat, which causes a potential difference between the upper and lower ends(hydrovoltaic effect). The product of the enzymatic reaction can adjust the EDL and influence the output. This device can be integrated with wireless transmitter and may have potential application in constructing sports big data. This work promotes the development of next generation of biosensors and expands the scope of self-powered physiological monitoring system.Wanglinhan Zhang Hongye Guan Tianyan Zhong Tianming Zhao Lili Xing Xinyu Xue 2020Nano-Micro Letters2020,12,8:5
A Self-Powered Breath Analyzer Based on PANI/PVDF Piezo-Gas-Sensing Arrays for Potential Diagnostics Application显示文摘The increasing morbidity of internal diseases poses serious threats to human health and quality of life.Exhaled breath analysis is a noninvasive and convenient diagnostic method to improve the cure rate of patients. In this study, a self-powered breath analyzer based on polyaniline/polyvinylidene fluoride(PANI/PVDF) piezogas-sensing arrays has been developed for potential detection of several internal diseases. The device works by converting exhaled breath energy into piezoelectric gassensing signals without any external power sources. The five sensing units in the device have different sensitivities to various gas markers with concentrations ranging from 0 to 600 ppm. The working principle can be attributed to the coupling of the in-pipe gas-flow-induced piezoelectric effect of PVDF and gas-sensing properties of PANI electrodes. In addition, the device demonstrates its use as an ethanol analyzer to roughly mimic fatty liver diagnosis. This new approach can be applied to fabricating new exhaled breath analyzers and promoting the development of self-powered systems.Yongming Fu Haoxuan He Tianming Zhao Yitong Dai Wuxiao Han Jie Ma Lili Xing Yan Zhang Xinyu Xue 2018Nano-Micro Letters2018,10,4:4
Estimating abundance and density of Amur tigers along the Sino- Russian border显示文摘As an apex predator the Amur tiger(Panthera tigris altaica)could play a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of forest ecosystems in Northeast Asia.Due to habitat loss and harvest over the past century, tigers rapidly declined in China and are now restricted to the Russian Far East and bordering habitat in nearby China. To facilitate restoration of the tiger in its historical range, reliable estimates of population size are essential to assess effectiveness of conservation interventions. Here we used camera trap data collected in Hunchun National Nature Reserve from April to June 2013 and 2014 to estimate tiger density and abundance using both maximum likelihood and Bayesian spatially explicit capture-recapture(SECR)methods.A minimum of 8 individuals were detected in both sample periods and the documentation of marking behavior and reproduction suggests the presence of a resident population.Using Bayesian SECR modeling within the 11400 km2 state space, density estimates were 0.33 and 0.40 individuals/100 km^(2) in 2013 and 2014,respectively,corresponding to an estimated abundance of 38 and 45 animals for this transboundary Sino-Russian population. In a maximum likelihood framework,we estimated densities of 0.30 and 0.24 individuals/100 km^(2) corresponding to abundances of 34 and 27,in 2013 and 2014,respectively.These density estimates are comparable to other published estimates for resident Amur tiger populations in the Russian Far East. This study reveals promising signs of tiger recovery in Northeast China, and demonstrates the importance of connectivity between the Russian and Chinese populations for recovering tigers in Northeast China.Wenhong XIAO Limin FENG Pu MOU Dale GMIQUELLE Mark HEBBLEWHITE Joshua FGOLDBERG Hugh SROBINSON Xiaodan ZHAO Bo ZHOU Tianming WANG Jianping GE 2016Integrative Zoology2016,11,4:4
Synthesis, characterization and cell imaging properties of rare earth compounds based on hydroxamate ligand显示文摘Six binuclear rare earth compounds were synthesized through the ligand of 4-Bromo-N-hydroxy-Nmethyl-benzamide(sH_2 bha). Compounds 1-3 are isomorphous, and compound 1 is crystallized in the monoclinic system with the P2_1/c space group. Compounds 4 and 5 are isomorphous, and compound 4 is crystallized in the triclinic system with the P-1 space group. Compound 6 is crystallized in the triclinic system with the P-1 space group. The compounds were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and IR spectroscopy. The fluorescence spectrum in the visible area shows characteristic peaks of Eu, Tb, and Dy compounds. The efficiency of Eu compound on the viability of PC3 cells was assessed using CCK8 assays. From the CCK8 results, ionic concentration may have a great effect on PC3 cells' proliferation. Eu compound shows red fluorescence in the cytoplasm of PC3 cell. As for Eu compound, it might have potential application in cell imaging technology.Linyan Yang Yanping Zhang Liwei Hu Yunhe Zong Ruili Zhao Tianming Jin Wen Gu 2018Journal of Rare Earths2018,36,4:3
Genomic and transcriptomic analysis unveils population evolution and development of pesticide resistance in fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda显示文摘The fall armyworm(FAW),Spodoptera frugiperda,is a destructive pest native to America and has recently become an invasive insect pest in China.Because of its rapid spread and great risks in China, understanding of FAW genetic background and pesticide resistance is urgent and essential to develop effective management strategies. Here,we assembled a chromosome-level genome of a male FAW(SFynMstLFR)and compared re-sequencing results of the populations from America,Africa, and China.Strain identification of 163 individuals collected from America,Africa and China showed that both C and R strains were found in the American pop-ulations,while only C strain was found in the Chinese and African populations. Moreover, population geno-mics analysis showed that populations from Africa and China have close relationship with significantly genetic differentiation from American populations.Taken toge-ther,FAWs invaded into China were most likely origi-nated from Africa.Comparative genomics analysis displayed that the cytochrome p450 gene family is extremely expanded to 425 members in FAW,of which 283 genes are specific to FAW.Treatments of Chinese populations with twenty-three pesticides showed the variant patterns of transcriptome profiles, and several detoxification genes such as AOX,UGT and GST spe-cially responded to the pesticides. These findings will be useful in developing effective strategies for manage-ment of FAW in China and other invaded areas.Furong Gui Tianming Lan Yue Zhao Wei Guo Yang Dong Dongming Fang Huan Liu Haimeng Li Hongli Wang Ruoshi Hao Xiaofang Cheng Yahong Li Pengcheng Yang Sunil Kumar Sahu Yaping Chen Le Cheng Shuqi He Ping Liu Guangyi Fan Haorong Lu Guohai Hu Wei Dong Bin Chen Yuan Jiang Yongwei Zhang Hanhong Xu Fei Lin Bernard Slippers Alisa Postma Matthew Jackson Birhan Addisie Abate Kassahun Tesfaye Aschalew Lemma Demie Meseret Destaw Bayeleygne Dawit Tesfaye Degefu Feng Chen Paul K.Kuria Zachary M.Kinyua Tong-Xian Liu Huanming Yang Fangneng Huang Xin Liu Jun Sheng Le Kang 2022Protein & Cell2022,13,7:2
On brain activity mapping: Insights and lessons from Brain Decoding Project to map memory patterns in the hippocampus显示文摘The BRAIN project recently announced by the president Obama is the reflection of unrelenting human quest for cracking the brain code, the patterns of neuronal activity that define who we are and what we are. While the Brain Activity Mapping proposal has rightly emphasized on the need to develop new technologies for measuring every spike from every neuron, it might be helpful to consider both the theoretical and experimental aspects that would accelerate our search for the organizing principles of the brain code. Here we share several insights and lessons from the similar proposal, namely, Brain Decoding Project that we initiated since 2007. We provide a specific example in our initial mapping of real-time memory traces from one part of the memory circuit, namely, the CA1 region of the mouse hippocampus. We show how innovative behavioral tasks and appropriate mathematical analyses of large datasets can play equally, if not more, important roles in uncovering the specific-to-general feature-coding cell assembly mechanism by which episodic memory, semantic knowledge, and imagination are generated and organized. Our own experiences suggest that the bottleneck of the Brain Project is not only at merely developing additional new technologies, but also the lack of efficient avenues to disseminate cutting edge platforms and decoding expertise to neuroscience community. Therefore, we propose that in order to harness unique insights and extensive knowledge from various investigators working in diverse neuroscience subfields, ranging from perception and emotion to memory and social behaviors, the BRAIN project should create a set of International and National Brain Decoding Centers at which cutting-edge recording technologies and expertise on analyzing large datasets analyses can be made readily available to the entire community of neuroscientists who can apply and schedule to perform cutting-edge research.TSIEN Joe Z. 13A self-powered temperature-sensitive electronic-skin based on tribotronic effect of PDMS/PANI nanostructures显示文摘A new self-powered temperature-sensitive electronic-skin(e-skin) for real-time monitoring body temperature without external electricity power was fabricated from patterned polydimethylsiloxane/polyaniline(PDMS/PANI) nanostructures. The e-skin can be feasibly attached on the human body and driven by the mechanical motion energy through triboelectric effect. The outputting triboelectric impulse of the PDMS/PANI units is significantly dependent on the local surface temperature of the eskin, serving as both the power source and temperature sensing signal. The outputting current of the e-skin increases with increasing surface temperature of the device. Under applied bending deformation, the response of the e-skin is up to 63.6 for 38.6℃. The e-skin can detect minimum temperature change of 0.4℃. The working mechanism can be ascribed to the coupling effect of triboelectric and semiconductor properties(tribotronic effect). A practical application of the e-skin attaching on the human body for detecting the body temperature range of 36.5–42.0℃ has been simply demonstrated. This work provides a viable method for real-time monitoring body temperature, and can promote the development of wearable temperature sensors and self-powered multifunctional nanosystems.Zize Liu Tianming Zhao Hongye Guan Tianyan Zhong Haoxuan He Lili Xing Xinyu Xue 2019Journal of Materials Science & Technology2019,35,10:1
MDP25 mediates the fine-tuning of microtubule organization in response to salt stress显示文摘Microtubules are dynamic cytoskeleton structures playing fundamental roles in plant responses to salt stress. The precise mechanisms by which microtubule organization is regulated under salt stress are largely unknown. Here,we report that Arabidopsis thaliana MICROTUBULE-DESTABILIZING PROTEIN 25(MDP25;also known as PLASMA MEMBRANEASSOCIATED CATION-BINDING PROTEIN 1(PCaP1))helps regulate microtubule organization.Under salt treatment, elevated cytosolic Ca^(2+) concentration caused MDP25 to partially dissociate from the plasma membrane, promoting microtubule depolymerization. When Ca^(2+) signaling was blocked by BAPTA-AM or LaCl_(3),microtubule depolymerization in wild-type and MDP25-overexpressing cells was slower, while there was no obvious change in mdp25 cells.Knockout of MDP25 improved microtubule reassembly and was conducive to microtubule integrity under long-term salt treatment and microtubule recovery after salt stress.Moreover,mdp25 seedlings exhibited a higher survival rate under salt stress. The presence microtubule-disrupting reagent oryzalin or microtubule-stabilizing reagent paclitaxel differentially affected the survival rates of different genotypes under salt stress.MDP25 promoted microtubule instability by affecting the catastrophe and rescue frequencies, shrinkage rate and time in pause phase at the microtubule plus-end and the depolymerization rate at the microtubule minus-end.These findings reveal a role for MDP25 in regulating microtubule organization under salt treatment by affecting microtubule dynamics.Peizhi Yang Jingwei Jin Jingru Zhang Dan Wang Xuechun Bai Wenfei Xie Tianming Hu Xuan Zhao Tonglin Mao Tao Qin 2022Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2022,64,6:1
