| 1 | A rare Waxy allele coordinately improves rice eating and cooking quality and grain transparency显示文摘In rice(Oryza sativa), amylose content(AC) is the major factor that determines eating and cooking quality(ECQ). The diversity in AC is largely attributed to natural allelic variation at the Waxy(Wx)locus. Here we identified a rare Wx allele, Wx^(mw) ,which combines a favorable AC, improved ECQ and grain transparency. Based on a phylogenetic analysis of Wx genomic sequences from 370 rice accessions, we speculated that Wx^(mw) may have derived from recombination between two important natural Wx alleles, Wx^(in) and Wx^(b). We validated the effects of Wx^(mw) on rice grain quality using both transgenic lines and near-isogenic lines(NILs). When introgressed into the japonica Nipponbare(NIP) background, Wx^(mw) resulted in a moderate AC that was intermediate between that of NILs carrying the Wx^(b)allele and NILs with the Wx^(mp) allele. Notably, mature grains of NILs fixed for Wx^(mw) had an improved transparent endosperm relative to soft rice. Further, we introduced Wx^(mw) into a high-yielding japonica cultivar via molecular marker-assisted selection: the introgressed lines exhibited clear improvements in ECQ and endosperm transparency. | 2 | Integrated transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses provide insights into cold stress response in wheat显示文摘Cold tolerance of crop plants influences survival and productivity under low-temperature conditions. Elucidation of molecular mechanisms underlying low temperature tolerance could be helpful in breeding. In this study, we used integrated transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses to investigate changes in gene/metabolite activity in a winter-hardy wheat cultivar of(cv. Jing 411) when subjected to sold stress. The 223 metabolites mainly enriched during cold acclimation included carbohydrates, flavonoids, and amino acids.Eight common metabolites had altered abundance following freezing treatment;six increased and two decreased. Transcriptome analysis revealed that 29,066 genes were differentially expressed in wheat crowns after cold acclimation compared to the nonacclimated control. Among them, 745 genes were up-regulated following freezing treatment, suggesting substantial change in expression of a large quantity of genes upon cold acclimation and freezing treatment, which impacts on the modified metabolites.Integrated analysis of gene expression and metabolite profiles revealed that the abscisic acid(ABA)/jasmonic acid(JA) phytohormone signaling and proline biosynthesis pathways were significantly modulated under cold acclimation and freezing treatments. Our results indicated that low-temperature stress induced substantial changes in both transcriptomes and metabolomes. | 3 | Controlled mechanical assembly of complex 3D mesostructures and strain sensors by tensile buckling显示文摘Recent research establishes methods of controlled mechanical assembly as versatile routes to three-dimensional(3D)mesostructures from patterned 2D films,with demonstrated applicability to a broad range of materials(e.g.,semiconductors,polymers,metals,and their combinations)and length scales(e.g.,from sub-microscale to centimeter scale).Previously reported schemes use pre-stretched elastomeric substrates as assembly platforms to induce compressive buckling of 2D precursor structures,thereby enabling their controlled transformation into 3D architectures.Here,we introduce tensile buckling as a different,complementary strategy that bypasses the need for a pre-stretched platform,thereby simplifying the assembly process and opening routes to additional classes of 3D geometries unobtainable with compressive buckling.A few basic principles in mechanics serve as guidelines for the design of 2D precursor structures that achieve large out-of-plane motions and associated 3D transformations due to tensile buckling.Experimental and computational studies of nearly 20 examples demonstrate the utility of this approach in the assembly of complex 3D mesostructures with characteristic dimensions from micron to millimeter scales.The results also establish the use of nonlinear mechanics modeling as a mechanism for designing systems that yield desired 3D geometries.A strain sensor that offers visible readout and large detectable strain range through a collection of mechanically triggered electrical switches and LEDs serves as an application example. | Xiaogang Guo Xueju Wang Dapeng Ou Jilong Ye Wenbo Pang Yonggang Huang John A.Rogers Yihui Zhang | 2018 | npj Flexible Electronics2018,2,1: | 4 |
| 4 | Restoration of hyper-eutrophic water with a modularized and air adjustable constructed submerged plant bed显示文摘A modularized and air adjustable constructed submerged plant bed(CSPB)which can be used to restore the eutrophic water is introduced in this paper.This plant bed helps hydrophyte grow under poor conditions such as frequently changed water depth,impaired water transparency,algae bloom and substantial duckweed in summer,which are not naturally suitable for growing hydrophyte.This pilot study in Waihuan River of Tianjin,China,revealed that reduction of Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD),Total Nitrogen(TN)and Total Phosphorus(TP)by the use of CSPB could be reached 30%-35%,35%-40%,30%-40%respectively in the growing season(from March to October)and 5%-10%,5%-15%,7%-20%respectively in the winter(from November to February)when the detention time was 6 d.The relationships between the concentration of COD,TN,TP and the detention time fit the first-order kinetic equation well and the coefficients of determination(R^(2))were all above 0.9.The attenuation coefficients k of the kinetic equation were a function of the water temperature.When the water temperature was quite low or quite high,k was not significantly changed with increasing or decreasing water temperature.While when the temperature was in a moderate range,an increase or decrease of water temperature would lead to a rapid increase or decrease in k. | Jinzhong LI Xueju LI Shujuan SUN Xuegong LIU Suiliang HUANG | 2011 | Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2011,5,4: | 3 |
