| 1 | Intercropping with Solanum nigrum and Solanum photeinocarpum from Two Ecoclimatic Regions Promotes Growth and Reduces Cadmium Uptake of Eggplant Seedlings显示文摘Soil contamination by heavy metals is a serious environmental problem worldwide, and reduction of heavy metal accumulation in vegetables grown on contaminated land is a matter of urgency. A pot experiment was conducted to study the effects of intercropping with the Cd hyperaccumulators Solanum nigrum and Solanum photeinocarpum from two ecoclimatic regions, Ya'an and Chengdu,Sichuan Province, China, on the growth and cadmium(Cd) uptake of eggplant(Solanum melongena L.). The biomass, photosynthetic pigment contents, and activities of antioxidant enzymes of eggplant were enhanced by intercropping. The biomass of eggplant was the highest after intercropping with S. photeinocarpum from Ya'an, but did not differ significantly from that after intercropping with S. nigrum from Chengdu. The shoot Cd content of eggplant was significantly reduced by intercropping with the hyperaccumulators,which ranked as follows: S. nigrum from Chengdu > S. nigrum from Ya'an > S. photeinocarpum from Chengdu > S. photeinocarpum from Ya'an, with the decreases being 19.60%, 14.36%, 9.66%, and 6.42%, respectively, as compared with the control. The lowest shoot Cd content and translocation factor of eggplant were attained after intercropping with S. nigrum from Chengdu. | 3 | Surgical complexity and prognostic outcome of small volume renal cell carcinoma with high-level venous tumor thrombus and large volume renal cell carcinoma with low-level thrombus显示文摘Background:Radical nephrectomy with thrombectomy is one of the most difficult and complicated urological operations.But the roles of renal tumor volume and thrombus level in surgical complexity and prognostic outcome are not clear.This study aimed to evaluate the surgical complexity and prognostic outcome between the volume of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and the level of venous tumor thrombus.Methods:The clinical data of 67 RCC cases with renal vein or inferior vena cava (IVC) tumor thrombus from January 2015 to May 2018 were retrospectively analyzed.Among these 67 cases,21 (31.3%) were small tumors with high-level thrombus (tumor ≤7 cm in diameter and thrombus Neves Level Ⅱ-Ⅳ),while 46 (68.7%) were large tumors with low-level thrombus group (tumor >7 cm in diameter and thrombus Level 0-Ⅰ).Clinical features,operation details,and pathology data were collected.Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were applied to evaluate the risk factors for small tumor with high-level thrombus.Results:Patients with small tumors and high-level thrombus were more likely to have longer operative time (421.9 ± 135.1 min vs.282.2 ± 101.9 min,t=4.685,P < 0.001),more surgical bleeding volume (1200 [325,2900] mL vs.500 [180,1000] mL,U =270.000,P =0.004),more surgical blood transfusion volume (800 [0,1400] mL vs.0 [0,800] mL,U =287.500,P =0.004),more plasma transfusion volume (0 [0,800] mL vs.0 [0,0] mL,U =319.000,P =0.004),higher percentage of open operative approach (76.2% vs.32.6%,x2 =11.015,P =0.001),higher percentage of IVC resection (33.3% vs.0%,x2 =17.122,P < 0.001),and higher percentage of post-operative complications (52.4% vs.19.6%,x2 =7.415,P =0.010) than patients with large tumors and low-level thrombus.In multivariate analysis,decreased hemoglobin (Hb)(odds ratio [OR]:0.956,95 % confidence interval [CI]:0.926-0.986,P =0.005) and non-sarcomatoid differentiation (OR:0.050,95% CI:0.004-0.664,P =0.023) were more likely to form small tumors with high-level tumor thrombus rather than large tumor with small tumor thrombus.The estimated mean cancerspecific survival times of small tumor with high-level thrombus and large tumor with low-level thrombus were 31.6 ± 3.8 months and 32.5 ± 2.9 months,without statistical significance (P =0.955).After univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard survival regression analyses,only distant metastasis (hazard ratio [HR]:3.839,P =0.002),sarcomatoid differentiation (HR:7.923,P < 0.001),alkaline phosphatase (HR:2.661,P =0.025),and severe post-operative complications (HR:10.326,P =0.001) were independent predictors of prognosis.Conclusions:The level of the tumor thrombus was more important than the diameter of the primary kidney tumor in affecting the complexity of surgery.In the same T3 stage,neither the renal tumor diameter nor the tumor thrombus level was an independent risk factor for prognosis. | Zhuo Liu Xun Zhao Hong-Xian Zhang Li-Wei Li Shi-Ying Tang Guo-Liang Wang Shu-Dong Zhang Shu-Min Wang Lu-Lin Ma Xiao-Jun Tian | 2019 | Chinese Medical Journal2019,,15: | 8 |
| 4 | Wolbachia infection dynamics by reaction-diffusion equations显示文摘Dengue fever is caused by the dengue virus and transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes.A promising avenue for eradicating the disease is to infect the wild aedes population with the bacterium Wolbachia driven by cytoplasmic incompatibility(CI).When releasing Wolbachia infected mosquitoes for population replacement,it is essential to not ignore the spatial inhomogeneity of wild mosquito distribution.In this paper,we develop a model of reaction-diffusion system to investigate the infection dynamics in natural areas,under the assumptions supported by recent experiments such as perfect maternal transmission and complete CI.We prove non-existence of inhomogeneous steady-states when one of the diffusion coefficients is sufficiently large,and classify local stability for constant steady states.It is seen that diffusion does not change the criteria for the local stabilities.Our major concern is to determine the minimum infection frequency above which Wolbachia can spread into the whole population of mosquitoes.We find that diffusion drives the minimum frequency slightly higher in general.However,the minimum remains zero when Wolbachia infection brings overwhelming fitness benefit.In the special case when the infection does not alter the longevity of mosquitoes but reduces the birth rate by half,diffusion has no impact on the minimum frequency. | HUANG Mu Gen TANG Mo Xun YU Jian She | 2015 | Science China Mathematics2015,58,1: | 8 |
| 5 | GENETIC ENGINEERING NEURAL STEM CELL MODIFIED BY LENTIVIRUS FOR REPAIR OF SPINAL CORD INJURY IN RATS显示文摘Objective To explore the feasibility for therapy of spinal cord injury (SCI) by genetic engineering neural stem cell (NSC) modified by lentiviral vector. Methods Following the construction of the genetic engineering NSC modified by lentivirus to secrete both neurotrophic factor-3 (NT-3) and green fluorescence protein (GFP), hemisection of spinal cord at the level of T_ 10 was performed in 56 adult Wistar rats that were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=14), namely 3 therapeutic groups and 1 control group. The therapeutic groups were dealed with NSC, genetic engineering NSC, and concentrated lentiviral supernatant which carries both GFP and NT-3, respectively. Then used fluorescence microscope to detect the transgenic expression in vitro and in vivo, migration of the grafted cells in vivo, and used the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) open-field locomotor test to assess the recovery of function. Results The transplanted cells could survive for long time in vivo and migrate for long distance. The stable transgenic expression could be detected in vivo. The hindlimb function of the injured rats in 3 therapeutic groups, especially those dealed with genetic engineering NSC, improved obviously. Conclusion It is feasible to combine NSC with lentivirus for the repair of SCI. | 9 | Effect of cream, prepared with Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F and other four medicinals, on joint pain and swelling in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a double-blinded, randomized, placebo controlled clinical trial显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness a cream onjoint pain and swelling in patients with rheumatoid arthritis(RA). The cream, topically used, in was prepared with Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F(TwHF), Mangxiao(Nalrii Sulfas), Chuanxiong(Rhizoma Chuanxiong), stir-frying with liquid adjuvant Ruxiang(Olibanum), and stir-frying with liquid adjuvant Moyao(Myrrh).METHODS: Patients were 1∶1 randomized to addon TwHF cream twice a day or placebo for 4 weeks.The primary endpoint was achievement rate of20% improvement in American College of Rheuma-tology criteria(ACR20) at week 4. Secondary endpoints were ACR50, 28-joint count Disease Activity Score(DAS28) improvement and safety profiles.Statistical analyses were performed using intention to treat analysis(ITT) set.RESULTS: A total of 70 active RA patients were enrolled. At week 4, the ACR20 was 34.3%(12/35) in TwHF cream group and 11.4%(4/35) in placebo group(P = 0.015). Similarly, a higher ACR50 responder proportion was seen in TwHF cream group with 17.1%(6/35) comparing to it in placebo group with 2.9%(1/35)(P = 0.046). The TwHF cream group also had more improvement than the placebo group on DAS28-ESR(1.1 vs 0.5, P = 0.001), DAS28-CRP(1.4 vs 0.7, P = 0.001), tender joint count(5.5 vs2.6, P = 0.018), swollen joint count(3.5 vs 1.6, P =0.003) and Physician's global assessment(25.8 vs13.0, P = 0.002), as well as C-reactive protein(11.2 vs 2.7, P = 0.048). | 10 | Metro train rescheduling by adding backup trains under disrupted scenarios显示文摘In large cities with heavily congested metro lines, unexpected disturbances often occur, which may cause severe delay of multiple trains, blockage of partial lines, and reduction of passenger service. Metro dispatchers have taken a practical strategy of rescheduling the timetable and adding several backup trains in storage tracks to alleviate waiting passengers from crowding the platforms and recover from such disruptions. In this study,we first develop a mixed integer programming model to determine the optimal train rescheduling plan with considerations of in-service and backup trains. The aim of train rescheduling is to frequently dispatch trains to evacuate delayed passengers after the disruption. Given the nonlinearity of the model, several linearization techniques are adapted to reformulate the model into an equivalent linear model that can be easily handled by the optimization software. | 13 | CDH13 Genetic Polymorphisms, Adiponectin and Ischemic Stroke: a Chinese Family-based Sib-pair Study显示文摘Objective To understand the relationships between CDH13(T-cadherin) genetic polymorphisms, adiponectin levels and ischemic stroke, and possible interactions between CDH13 polymorphisms and other risk factors. Methods We recruited 342 Chinese ischemic stroke sib pairs. We genotyped rs4783244 and rs7193788 on CDH13 using time-of-flight mass spectrometry genotyping technology and measured total and high-molecular weight(HMW) adiponectin levels. We investigated associations between SNPs and ischemic stroke, and interactions between SNPs and other risk factors using multi-level mixed-effects regression model. Results In individuals without ischemic stroke, CDH13 rs4783244 was associated with total adiponectin levels(per T: Coef =-0.257, P = 0.001). CDH13 rs7193788 was associated with total adiponectin levels(per A: Coef =-0.221, P = 0.001) and HMW adiponectin levels(per A: Coef =-0.163, P = 0.003). rs7193788 was significantly associated with ischemic stroke(GA/AA vs. GG: OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.07 to 2.24, P = 0.020) after Bonferroni correction(α = 0.025). There was an interaction between rs7193788 and diabetes(P = 0.036). Compared to diabetes-free individuals with rs7193788 GG genotype, diabetes patients with rs7193788 GA/AA genotypes had higher risks for ischemic stroke(OR = 2.64, 95% CI: 1.58-4.40, P < 0.001). Conclusion CDH13 genetic polymorphisms are associated with adiponectin levels and ischemic stroke. | 14 | Are tuberculosis patients adherent to prescribed treatments in China? Results of a prospective cohort study显示文摘Background:Tuberculosis(TB)patients face numerous difficulties adhering to the long-term,rigorous TB treatment regimen.Findings on TB patients’treatment adherence vary across existing literature and official reports.The present study attempted to determine the actual treatment adherence of new TB patients and to identify factors leading to non-adherence.Methods:A prospective cohort of 481 newly confirmed TB patients from three counties in western China were enrolled during June to December 2012 and was followed until June 2013.Patients who missed at least one dose of drugs or one follow-up re-examination during the treatment course were deemed as non-adherent.Influencing factors were identified using a logistic regression model.Results:A total of 173(36.0%)patients experienced non-adherence and the loss to follow-up cases reached 136(28.2%).Only 13.9%of patients took drugs under direct observation,and 60.5%of patients were supervised by phone calls.Factor analyses suggested that patients who were observed by family members(OR:5.54,95%CI:2.87–10.69)and paying monthly service expenses above 450 RMB(OR:2.08,95%CI:1.35–3.19)were more likely to be non-adherent,while supervision by home visit(OR:0.06,95%CI:0.01–0.28)and phone calls(OR:0.27,95%CI:0.17–0.44)were protective factors.Conclusions:Despite recent efforts,a large proportion of newly confirmed TB patients could not adhere to standard TB treatment,and patients’lost to follow-up was still a serious problem.Poor treatment supervision and heavy financial burden might be the main causes for non-adherence.More needs to be done to enhance treatment supervision policies and financial supports to both health providers and TB patients. | Xun Lei Ke Huang Qin Liu Yong-Feng Jie Sheng-Lan Tang | 2016 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2016,5,1: | 3 |

| 18 | Analysis on the migration of first-generation Mythimna separata(Walker) in China in 2013显示文摘Mythimna separata(Walker) is an important pest which can cause serious damages to cereal crops. In the past two decades, several heavy outbreaks have taken place in northern China. In order to develop a fine-scale method of forecasting outbreaks, population data were collected in northern China using searchlight traps and ground light traps. A background weather pattern analysis and trajectory analysis were performed via the Weather Research and Forecast(WRF) and FLEXPART models. Our results showed that heavy migration of first-generation M. separata appeared in northern China in 2013. In Yanqing District, Beijing, the cumulative number of captured adults in searchlight traps was around 250000 and the daily maximum for trapped moths was 86000. During the peak period, the majority of M. separata moths arrived after 00:00 every night. The sex ratio(female:male) at each monitoring site was greater than 1 and greatly fluctuated with population dynamics. During the migration peak, prevailing downdraft winds benefited M. separata moths to land passively. Trajectory simulation showed that immigrants were from Anhui, Jiangsu and Hubei provinces and most of them could continue to fly into the northeastern regions of China. | 19 | Peking University Third Hospital score:a comprehensive system to predict intra-operative blood loss in radical nephrectomy and thrombectomy显示文摘Background:Radical nephrectomy and thrombectomy is the standard surgical procedure for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with tumor thrombus (TT). But the estimation of intra-operative blood loss is only based on the surgeon’s experience. Therefore, our study aimed to develop Peking University Third Hospital score (PKUTH score) for the prediction of intra-operative blood loss volume in radical nephrectomy and thrombectomy.Methods: The clinical data of 153 cases of renal mass with renal vein (RV) or inferior vena cava tumor thrombus admitted to Department of Urology, Peking University Third Hospital from January 2015 to May 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. The total amount of blood loss during operation is equal to the amount of blood sucked out by the aspirator plus the amount of blood in the blood-soaked gauze. Univariate linear analysis was used to analyze risk factors for intra-operative blood loss, then significant factors were included in subsequent multivariable linear regression analysis.Results: The final multivariable model included the following three factors: open operative approach (P < 0.001), Neves classification IV (P < 0.001), inferior vena cava resection (P = 0.001). The PKUTH score (0-3) was calculated according to the number of aforementioned risk factors. A significant increase of blood loss was noticed along with higher risk score. The estimated median blood loss from PKUTH score 0 to 3 was 280 mL (interquartile range [IQR] 100-600 mL), 1250 mL (IQR 575-2700 mL), 2000 mL (IQR 1250-2900 mL), and 5000 mL (IQR 4250-8000 mL), respectively. Meanwhile, the higher PKUTH score was, the more chance of post-operative complications (P = 0.004) occurred. | 20 | Transcriptomic analysis elucidates the enhanced skeletal muscle mass, reduced fat accumulation, and metabolically benign liver in human follistatin-344 transgenic pigs显示文摘Follistatin(FST) is an important regulator of skeletal muscle growth and adipose deposition through its ability to bind to several members of the transforming growth factor-β(TGF-β) superfamily, and thus may be a good candidate for future animal breeding programs. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the phenotypic changes have yet to be clarified in pig. We generated transgenic(TG) pigs that express human FST specifically in skeletal muscle tissues and characterized the phenotypic changes compared with the same tissues in wild-type pigs. The TG pigs showed increased skeletal muscle growth, decreased adipose deposition, and improved metabolism status(P<0.05). Transcriptome analysis detected important roles of the PIK3–AKT signaling pathway, calcium-mediated signaling pathway, and amino acid metabolism pathway in FST-induced skeletal muscle hypertrophy, and depot-specific oxidative metabolism changes in psoas major muscle. Furthermore, the lipid metabolism-related process was changed in adipose tissue in the TG pigs. Gene set enrichment analysis revealed that genes related to lipid synthesis, lipid catabolism, and lipid storage were down-regulated(P<0.01) in the TG pigs for subcutaneous fat, whereas genes related to lipid catabolism were significantly up-regulated(P<0.05) in the TG pigs for retroperitoneal fat compared with their expression levels in wild-type pigs. In liver, genes related to the TGF-β signaling pathway were over-represented in the TG pigs, which is consistent with the inhibitory role of FST in regulating TGF-β signaling.
