| 2 | Economic and Social Impact Assessment of the Alternatives to DDT Usage for Antifouling Paint Production in China显示文摘China is the only nation that uses DDT in antifouling pain at present, approximately 5% of DDT is applied as the additive of the antifouling paint production. Therefore, actions shall be taken urgently for banning the use of DDT and substituting with non-POPs alternatives in antifouling paints. The paper researches the social and economic backgrounds of DDT booster antifouling paint production and usage, analyzes the social and economic impact assessment of the alternatives to DDT usage for antifouling paint. The implementation of the project of alternatives will completely eliminate the adverse impact of DDT booster antifouling paint on terrestrial, marine ecosystem and human health. | 3 | The twin-beginnings of COVID-19 in Asia and Europe—one prevails quickly显示文摘In the spread of SARS-C oV-2,there have been multiple waves of replacement between strains,each of which having a distinct set of mutations.The first wave is a group of four mutations(C241 T,C3037 T,C14408 T and A23403 G [this being the amino acid change D614 G];all designated 0 to 1 below).This DG(D614 G) group,fixed at the start of the pandemic,is the foundation of all subsequent waves of strains.Curiously,the DG group is absent in early Asian samples but present(and likely common) in Europe from the beginning.European data show that the high fitness of DG1111 requires the synergistic effect of all four mutations.However,the European strains would have had no time to evolve the four DG mutations(0 to1),had they come directly from the early Asian DG0000 strain.Very likely,the European DG1111 strain had acquired the highly adaptive DG mutations in pre-pandemic Europe and had been spreading in parallel with the Asian strains.Two recent reports further support this twin-beginning interpretation.There was a period of two-way spread between Asia and Europe but,by May 2020,the European strains had supplanted the Asian strains globally.This large-scale replacement of one set of mutations for another has since been replayed many times as COVID-19 progresses. | Yongsen Ruan Haijun Wen Mei Hou Ziwen He Xuemei Lu Yongbiao Xue Xionglei He Ya-Ping Zhang Chung-I Wu | 2022 | National Science Review2022,9,4: | 0 |
| 4 | Intermittent F-actin Perturbations by Magnetic Fields Inhibit Breast Cancer Metastasis显示文摘F-actin(filamentous actin)has been shown to be sensitive to mechanical stimuli and play critical roles in cell attachment,migration,and cancer metastasis,but there are very limited ways to perturb F-actin dynamics with low cell toxicity.Magnetic field is a noninvasive and reversible physical tool that can easily penetrate cells and human bodies.Here,we show that 0.1/0.4-T 4.2-Hz moderate-intensity low-frequency rotating magnetic field-induced electric field could directly decrease F-actin formation in vitro and in vivo,which results in decreased breast cancer cell migration,invasion,and attachment.Moreover,lowfrequency rotating magnetic fields generated significantly different effects on F-actin in breast cancer vs.noncancerous cells,including F-actin number and their recovery after magnetic field retrieval.Using an intermittent treatment modality,low-frequency rotating magnetic fields could significantly reduce mouse breast cancer metastasis,prolong mouse survival by 31.5 to 46.0%(P<0.0001),and improve their overall physical condition.Therefore,our work demonstrates that low-frequency rotating magnetic fields not only can be used as a research tool to perturb F-actin but also can inhibit breast cancer metastasis through F-actin modulation while having minimum effects on normal cells,which reveals their potential to be developed as temporal-controlled,noninvasive,and high-penetration physical treatments for metastatic cancer. | Xinmiao Ji Xiaofei Tian Shuang Feng Lei Zhang Junjun Wang Ruowen Guo Yiming Zhu Xin Yu Yongsen Zhang Haifeng Du Vitalii Zablotskii Xin Zhang | 2023 | Research2023,,4: | 0 |

| 6 | Very large hidden genetic diversity in one single tumor:evidence fortumors-in-tumor显示文摘Despite the concern of within-tumor genetic diversity,this diversity is in fact limited by the kinship among cells in the tumor.Indeed,genomic studies have amply supported the’Nowell dogma’whereby cells of the same tumor descend from a single progenitor cell.In parallel,genomic data also suggest that the diversity could be>10-fold larger if tumor cells are of multiple origins.We develop an evolutionary hypothesis that a single tumor may often harbor multiple cell clones of independent origins,but only one would be large enough to be detected.To test the hypothesis,we search for independent tumors within a larger one(or tumors-in-tumor).Very high density sampling was done on two cases of colon tumors.Case 1 indeed has 13 independent clones of disparate sizes,many having heavy mutation burdens and potentially highly tumorigenic.In Case 2,despite a very intensive search,only two small independent clones could be found.The two cases show very similar movements and metastasis of the dominant clone.Cells initially move actively in the expanding tumor but become nearly immobile in late stages.In conclusion,tumors-in-tumor are plausible but could be very demanding to find.Despite their small sizes,they can enhance the within-tumor diversity by orders of magnitude.Such increases may contribute to the missing genetic diversity associated with the resistance to cancer therapy. | Bingjie Chen Xianrui Wu Yongsen Ruan Yulin Zhang Qichun Cai Luis Zapata Chung-I Wu Ping Lan Haijun Wen | 2022 | National Science Review2022,9,12: | 0 |

| 8 | Hardening effect and precipitation evolution of an isothermal aged Mg-Sm based alloy显示文摘The age-hardening behavior and precipitation evolution of an isothermal aged Mg-5Sm-0.6Zn-0.5Zr(wt.%) alloy have been systematically investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and atomic-resolution high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy(HAADF-STEM). The Vickers hardness of the present alloy increases first and then decreases with ageing time. The sample aged at 200 ℃ for 10 h exhibits a peak-hardness of 90.5 HV. In addition to the dominant β_(0)’ precipitate(orthorhombic,a = 0.642 nm, b = 3.336 nm and c = 0.521 nm) formed on {11-20}α planes, a certain number of γ’’ precipitate(hexagonal, a = 0.556 nm and c = 0.431 nm) formed on basal planes are also observed in the peak-aged alloy.
