Role of oxygen free radicals in patients with acute pancreatitis显示文摘The generation of oxygen free radicals has been implicated in the pathogenesis of experimental pancreatitis. The aim of this study was to determine the role of oxygen free radicals in patients with acute pancreatitis.METHODS: The plasma levels of C-reactive protein (CRP),lipid peroxide (LPO), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were measured in 13 patients with acute pancreatitis and 14 healthy volunteers.RESULTS: Among the patients with acute pancreatitis, there were higher plasma levels of LPO and MPO and lower SOD activity in patients with severe pancreatitis than in those with mild pancreatitis. However, there was no significant difference in the serum marker of oxidative stress no matter what the etiology was. The LPO level was especially correlated with the concentration of serum CRP and CT severity index.CONCLUSION: The oxygen free radicals may be closely associated with inflammatory process and the severity of acute pancreatitis. Especially, the concentration of plasma LPO is a meaningful index for determining the severity of the disease. | Byung Kyu Park Jae Bock Chung Jin Heon Lee Jeong Hun Suh Seung Woo Park Si Young Song Hyeyoung Kim Kyung Hwan Kim Jin Kyung Kang | 2003 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2003,9,10: | 18
Safety and efficacy of tenofovir in chronic hepatitis B-related decompensated cirrhosis显示文摘AIM To evaluate the safety and efficacy of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate(TDF) as a first-line therapy in decompensated liver disease. METHODS We enrolled 174 chronic hepatitis B-related liver cirrhosis patients treated with 300 mg/d TDF at six Korean centers. Of the 174 cirrhosis patients, 57 were assigned to the decompensated cirrhosis group and 117 were assigned to the compensated cirrhosis group. We followed the patients for 12 mo and evaluated clinical outcomes, including biochemical, virological, and serological responses. We also evaluated changes in hepatic and renal function and compared the decompensated and compensated cirrhosis groups. RESULTS The 1-year complete virological response(CVR) and Hepatitis B e antigen(HBe Ag) seroconversion were seen in 70.2% and 14.2% in the decompensated cirrhosis group, respectively. The rates of HBe Ag seroconversion/loss and ALT normalization at month 12 were similar in both groups. TDF treatment was also effective for decreasing the level of hepatitis B virus(HBV) DNA in both groups, but CVR was higher in the compensated group(88.9% vs 70.2%, P = 0.005). Tenofovir treatment for 12 mo resulted in improved Child-Turcotte-Pugh(CTP) and model for end-stage liver disease(MELD) scores in decompensated group(P < 0.001). Of the 57 decompensated patients, 39(68.4%) achieved CTP class A and 27(49.1%) showed improvement in the CTP score of 2 points after 12 mo of TDF. The observed rate of confirmed 0.5 mg/d L increases in serum levels of creatinine in the decompensated and compensated cirrhosis group were 7.0% and 2.5%, respectively(P < 1.000).CONCLUSION TDF therapy in decompensated cirrhosis patients was effective for decreasing HBV DNA levels and improving hepatic function with relatively lower CVR than in compensated cirrhosis. Thus, physicians should carefully monitor not only renal function but also treatment responses when using TDF in decompensated cirrhosis patients. | Soon Kyu Lee Myeong Jun Song Seok Hyun Kim Byung Seok Lee Tae Hee Lee Young Woo Kang Suk Bae Kim Il Han Song Hee Bok Chae Soon Young Ko Jae Dong Lee | 2017 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2017,23,13: | 14
Clinical significance of loss of heterozygosity for M6P/IGF2R in patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM:To investigate the relationship between loss of heterozygosity (LOH) for mannose 6-phosphate/insulin- like growth factor 2 receptor (M6P/IGF2R) and the outcomes for primary HCC patients treated with partial hepatectomy. METHODS: The LOH for M6P/IGF2R in primary HCC patients was assessed using six different gene-specific nucleotide polymorphisms. The patients studied were enrolled to undergo partial hepatectomy. RESULTS: M6P/IGF2R was found to be polymorphic in 73.3% (22/30) of the patients, and of these patients, 50.0% (11/22) had tumors showing LOH in M6P/IGF2R. Loss of heterozygosity in M6P/IGF2R was associated with significant reductions in the two year overall survival rate (24.9% vs 65.5%; P = 0.04) and the disease-free survival rate (17.8% vs 59.3%; P = 0.03). CONCLUSION: These results show M6P/IGF2R LOH predicts poor clinical outcomes in surgically resected primary HCC patients. | Hong Seok Jang Ki Mun Kang Byung Ock Choi Gyu Young Chai Soon Chan Hong Woo Song Ha Randy L Jirtle | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,9: | 12
Low grade gastric mucosa associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma:Treatment strategies based on 10 year follow-up显示文摘AIM:To deduce strategic guidelines of gastric mucosa associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (MALTOMA) by evaluating the long-term outcome of patients in respect to various treatment modalities.METHODS:A total of 55 patients with MALTOMA from May 1992 to August 2002 were retrospectively reviewed.RESULTS: Complete remission was obtained in 24 (82.8%) of 29 patients treated with anti Helicobacter pylori(H pylori) regimen only. The duration to reach complete remission was 12 months (85 percentile, 2-33 months).Five patients showed complete remission with radiation therapy (26-86 months). Two of them were Hpyloritreatment failure cases.CONCLUSION: Hpylorieradication is an effective primary treatment option for low grade MALTOMA and radiation therapy could be considered in patients with no evidence of Hpyloninfection or who do not respond to Hpylorieradication therapy 12 months after successful eradication. | Sang Kil Lee Yong Chan Lee Jae Bock Chung Chae Yoon Chon Young Myoung Moon Jin Kyung Kang In-Suh Park Chang Ok Suh Woo Ik Yang | 2004 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2004,10,2: | 12
In-situ formation of MOF derived mesoporous Co3N/amorphous N-doped carbon nanocubes as an efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction显示文摘The suitable materials, metal nitrides, are a promising class of electrocatalyst materials for a highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) because they exhibit superior intrinsic conductivity and have higher sustainability than oxide-based materials. To our knowledge, for the first time,we report a designable synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) and mesoporous Co3N@ amorphous N-doped carbon (AN-C) nanocubes (NCs) with well-controlled open-framework structures via monodispersed Co3[Co(CN)6]2 Prussian blue analogue (PBA) NC precursors using in situ nitridation and calcination processes.Co3N@AN-C NCs (2 h) demonstrate better OER activity with a remarkably low Tafel plot (69.6 mV-dec-1),low overpotential of 280 mV at a current density of 10 mA-crrf2.Additionally,excellent cycling stability in alkaline electrolytes was exhibited without morphological changes and voltage elevations, superior to most reported hierarchical structures of transition-metal nitride particles. The presented strategy for synergy effects of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived transition-metal nitrides-carbon hybrid nanostructures provides prospects for developing high-performance and advanced electrocatalyst materials. | Bong Kyun Kang Seo Young Im Jooyoung Lee Sung Hoon Kwag Seok Bin Kwon SintayehuNibret Tiruneh Min-Jun Kim Jung Ho Kim Woo Seok Yang Byungkwon Lim Dae Ho Yoon | 2019 | Nano Research2019,12,7: | 8
Differential diagnosis of left-sided abdominal pain:Primary epiploic appendagitis vs colonic diverticulitis显示文摘AIM:To investigate the clinical characteristics of left primary epiploic appendagitis and to compare them with those of left colonic diverticulitis.METHODS:We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records and radiologic images of the patients who presented with left-sided acute abdominal pain and had computer tomography(CT) performed at the time of presentation showing radiological signs of left primary epiploic appendagitis(PEA) or left acute colonic diverticulitis(ACD) between January 2001 and December 2011. A total of 53 consecutive patients were enrolled and evaluated. We also compared the clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, treatments, and clinical results of left PEA with those of left ACD.RESULTS:Twenty-eight patients and twenty-five patients were diagnosed with symptomatic left PEA and ACD,respectively. The patients with left PEA had focal abdominal tenderness on the left lower quadrant(82.1%). On CT examination,most(89.3%) of the patients with left PEA were found to have an oval fatty mass with a hyperattenuated ring sign. In cases of left ACD,the patients presented with a more diffuse abdominal tenderness throughout the left side(52.0%vs 14.3%; P = 0.003). The patients with left ACD had fever and rebound tenderness more often than those with left PEA(40.0% vs 7.1%,P = 0.004; 52.0% vs14.3%,P = 0.003,respectively). Laboratory abnormalities such as leukocytosis were also more frequently observed in left ACD(52.0% vs 15.4%,P = 0.006).CONCLUSION:If patients have left-sided localized abdominal pain without associated symptoms or laboratory abnormalities, clinicians should suspect the diagnosis of PEA and consider a CT scan. | Jeong Ah Hwang Sun Moon Kim Hyun Jung Song Yu Mi Lee Kyung Min Moon Chang Gi Moon Hoon Sup Koo Kyung Ho Song Yong Seok Kim Tae Hee Lee Kyu Chan Huh Young Woo Choi Young Woo Kang Woo Suk Chung | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,40: | 6
Comparison of efficacy and safety between standard-dose and modified-dose FOLFIRINOX as a first-line treatment of pancreatic cancer显示文摘AIM To directly compare the efficacy and toxicity of standarddose FOLFIRINOX(sFOLFIRINOX) and modified-dose FOLFIRINOX(mFOLFIRINOX, 75% of standard-dose) for pancreatic cancer.METHODS One hundred and thirty pancreatic cancer patients who received sFOLFIRINOX(n = 88) or mFOLFIRINOX(n = 42) as their first-line chemotherapy from January 2013 to July 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. For efficacy analysis, the objective response rate(ORR),disease control rate(DCR), progression-free survival(PFS), and overall survival(OS) were evaluated and compared using Pearson's chi-square test, Kaplan-Meier plot and log-rank test. The adverse events(AEs) were evaluated, and severe(≥ grade 3) AEs rates of the two groups were compared for toxicity analysis.RESULTS The mFOLFIRINOX group included more female patients(30.7% vs 57.1%; P = 0.004) and older patients [age(median), 57 vs 63.5; P = 0.018] than the sFOLFIRINOX group. In the efficacy analysis, the ORR and DCR were not significantly different between the two groups(ORR: 39.8% vs 35.7%; P = 0.656; DCR: 80.7% vs 83.3%; P = 0.716). The median PFS and OS were also not different between the groups(PFS: 8.7 mo vs 8.1 mo, P = 0.272; OS: 13.9 mo vs 13.7 mo, P = 0.476). In the safety analysis with severe AEs, the rates of neutropenia(83.0% vs 66.7%; P = 0.044), anorexia(48.9% vs 28.6%; P = 0.029) and diarrhea(13.6% vs 0.0%; P = 0.009) were markedly lower in the mFOLFIRINOX group.CONCLUSION m FOLFIRINOX showed comparable efficacy but better safety compared to sFOLFIRINOX. If clinically necessary, initiating FOLFIRINOX with 75% of the standard-dose can alleviate toxicity concerns without compromising efficacy. | Huapyong Kang Jung Hyun Jo Hee Seung Lee Moon Jae Chung Seungmin Bang Seung Woo Park Si Young Song Jeong Youp Park | 2018 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2018,10,11: | 6

Short-term overlap lamivudine treatment with adefovir dipivoxil in patients with lamivudine-resistant chronic hepatitis B显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the efficacy of short-term overlap lamivudine therapy with adefovir in patients with lamivudine-resistant and nave chronic hepatitis B,we compared patients receiving overlap therapy with those receiving adefovir alone. METHODS:Eighty patients who had received lamivudine treatment for various periods and had a lamivudine- resistant liver function abnormality were enrolled.Forty of these patients received adefovir treatment combined with lamivudine treatment for≥2 mo,while the other 40 received adefovir alone. We assessed the levels of hepatitis B virus(HBV)DNA at 0,12 and 48 wk and serum alanine aminotransferase(ALT)levels after 0,12, 24 and 48 wk of adefovir treatment in each group. RESULTS:We found serum ALT became normalized in 72(87.5%)of the 80 patients, and HBV DNA decreased by≥2 log10 copies/mL in 60(75%)of the 80 patients at the end of a 48-wk treatment.HBV DNA levels were not significantly different between the groups. The improvements in serum ALT were also not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSION:These findings suggest short-term overlap lamivudine treatment results in no better virological and biological outcomes than non-overlap adefovir monotherapy. | Soon Woo Nam Si Hyun Bae Seung Woo Lee Yeon Soo Kim Sang Bum Kang Jong Young Choi Se Hyun Cho Seung Kew Yoon Joon-Yeol Han Jin Mo Yang Young Suk Lee | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,11: | 3

Efficient photovoltaic effect in graphene/h-BN/silicon heterostructure self-powered photodetector显示文摘Graphene(Gr)/Si-based optoelectronic devices have attracted a lot of academic attention due to the simpler fabrication processes, low costs, and higher performance of their two-dimensional(2D)/three-dimensional(3D)hybrid interfaces in Schottky junction that promotes electron-hole separation. However, due to the built-in potential of Gr/Si as a photodetector, the Iph/Idark ratio is often hindered near zero-bias at relatively low illumination intensity. This is a major drawback in self-powered photodetectors. In this study,we have demonstrated a self-powered van der Waals heterostructure photodetector in the visible range using a Gr/hexagonal boron nitride(h-BN)/Si structure and clarified that the thin h-BN insertion can engineer asymmetric carrier transport and avoid interlayer coupling at the interface. The dark current was able to be suppressed by inserting an h-BN insulator layer, while maintaining the photocurrent with minimal decrease at near zero-bias.As a result, the normalized photocurrent-to-dark ratio(NPDR)is improved more than 104 times. Also, both Iph/Idark ratio and detectivity, increase by more than 104 times at−0.03 V drain voltage. The proposed Gr/h-BN/Si heterostructure is able to contribute to the introduction of next-generation photodetectors and photovoltaic devices based on graphene or silicon. | Ui Yeon Won Boo Heung Lee Young Rae Kim Won Tae Kang Ilmin Lee Ji Eun Kim Young Hee Lee Woo Jong Yu | 2021 | Nano Research2021,14,6: | 2

Bacteriophage cocktail supplementation improves growth performance, gut microbiome and production traits in broiler chickens显示文摘Background:Effective antibiotic alternatives are urgently needed in the poultry industry to control disease outbreaks.Phage therapy mainly utilizes lytic phages to kill their respective bacterial hosts and can be an attractive solution to combating the emergence of antibiotic resistance in livestock. Methods:Five hundred and four,one-day-old broilers(Ross 308)were allotted to 1 of 4 treatment groups in a completely randomized design.Treatments consisted of CON(basal diet),PC(CON+0.025%Avilamax®),BP 0.05(CON+0.05%bacteriophage),and BP 0.10(CON+0.10%bacteriophage).Results:A significant linear effect on body weight gain(BWG)was observed during days 1–7,days 22–35,and cumulatively in bacteriophage(BP)supplemented groups. The BWG tended to be higher(P=0.08)and the feed intake(FI)was increased(P=0.017)in the PC group over CON group.A greater(P=0.016)BWG and trends in increased FI(P=0.06)were observed in the experiment in birds fed PC than CON diet.At the genus level, the relative abundance of Lactobacillus was decreased in PC(65.28%),while it was similar in BP 0.05 and BP 0.10(90.65%,86.72%)compared to CON(90.19%).At the species level, the relative abundance of Lactobacillus salivarus was higher in BP 0.05(40.15%)and BP 0.10(38.58%)compared to the CON(20.04%)and PC(18.05%).A linear reduction in the weight of bursa of Fabricius(P=0.022)and spleen(P=0.052)was observed in birds fed graded level of BP and an increase(P=0.059)in the weight of gizzard was observed in birds fed PC over BP diets.Linear and quadratic responses were observed in redness of breast muscle color in birds fed graded level of BP.Conclusions:The inclusion of the 0.05%and 0.1%BP cocktail linearly improved broiler weight during the first 7 days,22–35 days and cumulatively, whereas 0.05%BP addition was sufficient for supporting immune organs, bursa and spleen as well as enhancing gut microbiome, indicating the efficacy of 0.05%BP as a substitute antibiotic growth promoter in broiler diets. | Santi Devi Upadhaya Je Min Ahn Jae Hyoung Cho Jin Young Kim Dae Kyung Kang Sung Woo Kim Hyeun Bum Kim In Ho Kim | 2021 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2021,12,4: | 2

Diagnosis of gastric epithelial neoplasia:Dilemma for Korean pathologists显示文摘The histopathological diagnosis of gastric mucosal biopsy and endoscopic mucosal resection/endoscopic submucosal dissection specimens is important, but the diagnostic criteria, terminology, and grading system are not the same in the East and West.A structurally invasive focus is necessary to diagnose carcinoma for most Western pathologists, but Japanese pathologists make a diagnosis of cancer based on severe dysplastic cytologic atypia irrespective of the presence of invasion.Although the Vienna classification was introduced to reduce diagnostic discrepancies,it has been difficult to adopt due to different concepts for gastric epithelial neoplastic lesions.Korean pathologists experience much difficulty making a diagnosis because we are influenced by Japanese pathologists as well as Western medicine.Japan is geographically close to Korea, and academic exchanges are active.Additionally,Korean doctors are familiar with Western style medical terminology. As a result, the terminology, definitions, and diagnostic criteria for gastric intraepithelial neoplasia are very heterogeneous in Korea. To solve this problem, the Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group of the Korean Society of Pathologists has made an effort and has suggested guidelines for differential diagnosis:(1) a diagnosis of carcinoma is based on invasion;(2) the most important characteristic of low grade dysplasia is the architectural pattern such as regular distribution of crypts without severe branching, budding,or marked glandular crowding;(3) if nuclear pseudostratification occupies more than the basal half of the cryptal cells in three or more adjacent crypts, the lesion is considered high grade dysplasia;(4) if severe cytologic atypia is present, careful inspection for invasive foci is necessary, because the risk for invasion is very high;and(5) other structural or nuclear atypia should be evaluated to make a final decision such as cribriform pattern, papillae, ridges, vesicular nuclei, high nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio, loss of nuclear polarity, thick and irregular nuclear membrane, and nucleoli. | Joon Mee Kim Mee-Yon Cho Jin Hee Sohn Dae Young Kang Cheol Keun Park Woo Ho Kim So-Young Jin Kyoung Mee Kim Hee Kyung Chang Eunsil Yu Eun Sun Jung Mee Soo Chang Jong Eun Joo Mee Joo Youn Wha Kim Do Youn Park Yun Kyung Kang Sun Hoo Park Hye Seung Han Young Bae Kim Ho Sung Park Yang Seok Chae Kye Won Kwon Hee Jin Chang The Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group of Korean Society of Pathologists | 2011 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2011,17,21: | 2
