1Exploring the spatial pattern of historic Chinese towns and cities:A syntactical approach显示文摘This study explores the spatial pattern of Historic Chinese Towns and Cities(HCTC)by using a syntactic approach.The HCTC is an important element of the built environment and exhibits a variety of unique spatial characteristics.Although previous research has been focused on qualitative analysis,a quantitative approach to exploring this issue is scarce,leading to insufficient understanding of the spatial characteristics of HCTC.This study presents a quantitative approach to analyzing the spatial pattern of HCTC by utilizing the space syntax method.Four well-preserved historic towns were selected as case studies,each representing a typical spatial type of historic town in China.A series of mathematical measures from space syntax were used to explore the spatial characteristics of HCTC,facilitating expanded interpretation of traditional Chinese ideologies.Results contribute to a more critical understanding of the spatial pattern of HCTC.Pan Liao Ning Gu Rongrong Yu Chris Brisbin 2021Frontiers of Architectural Research2021,10,3:2

8Deep learning for real-time social media text classification for situation awareness-using Hurricanes Sandy,Harvey,and Irma as case studies显示文摘Social media platforms have been contributing to disaster management during the past several years.Text mining solutions using traditional machine learning techniques have been developed to categorize the messages into different themes,such as caution and advice,to better understand the meaning and leverage useful information from the social media text content.However,these methods are mostly event specific and difficult to generalize for cross-event classifications.In other words,traditional classification models trained by historic datasets are not capable of categorizing social media messages from a future event.This research examines the capability of a convolutional neural network(CNN)model in cross-event Twitter topic classification based on three geo-tagged twitter datasets collected during Hurricanes Sandy,Harvey,and Irma.The performance of the CNN model is compared to two traditional machine learning methods:support vector machine(SVM)and logistic regression(LR).Experiment results showed that CNN models achieved a consistently better accuracy for both single event and crossevent evaluation scenarios whereas SVM and LR models had lower accuracy compared to their own single event accuracy results.This indicated that the CNN model has the capability of pre-training Twitter data from past events to classify for an upcoming event for situational awareness.Manzhu Yu Qunying Huang Han Qin Chris Scheele Chaowei Yang 2019International Journal of Digital Earth2019,12,11:1

19Coastal wetlands in Lianyungang,Jiangsu Province,China:probably the most important site globally for the Asian Dowitcher(Limnodromus semipalmatus)显示文摘Background:Despite an increasing number of surveys and a growing interest in birdwatching,the population and distribution of Asian Dowitcher(Limnodromus semipalmatus),a species endemic to the East Asian-Australasian and Central Asian Flyways,remains poorly understood,and published information about the species is largely outdated.In boreal spring 2019,over 22,432 Asian Dowitchers were recorded in a coastal wetland at Lianyungang,Jiangsu Prov-ince,China,constituting 97.5%of its estimated global population.Methods:In 2019 and 2020,we conducted field surveys at Lianyungang to determine the numbers of Asian Dow-itchers using the area during both southward and northward migrations.We also assessed the distribution and abun-dance of Asian Dowitchers elsewhere along the China coast by searching literature and consulting expert opinion.Results:The coastal wetlands of Lianyungang are the most important stopover site for Asian Dowitchers during both northward and southward migrations;they supported over 90%of the estimated global population during north-ward migration in two consecutive years(May 2019 and 2020).This area also supported at least 15.83%and 28.42%(or 30.74%and 53.51%using modelled estimates)of the global population during southward migration in 2019 and 2020 respectively.Coastal wetlands in the west and north of Bohai Bay also have been important stopover sites for the species since the 1990s.Although comprehensive,long-term monitoring data are lacking,available evidence sug-gests that the population of the species may have declined.Conclusions:The high concentration of Asian Dowitchers at Lianyungang during migration means the species is highly susceptible to human disturbances and natural stochastic events.The coastal wetlands of Lianyungang should be protected and potentially qualify for inclusion in China’s forthcoming nomination for World Heritage listing of Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China(Phase II)in 2023.Additional research is needed to understand Asian Dowitchers’distribution and ecology,as well as why such a high proportion of their population rely on the Lianyungang coast.Ziyou Yang Jing Li Yongxiang Han Chris J.Hassell Kar-Sin Katherine Leung David S.Melville Yat-tung Yu Lin Zhang Chi-Yeung Choi 2021Avian Research2021,12,3:1
