Crop Phenomics and High-Throughput Phenotyping:Past Decades,Current Challenges, and Future Perspectives显示文摘Since whole-genome sequencing of many crops has been achieved, crop functional genomics studies have stepped into the big-data and high-throughput era. However, acquisition of large-scale phenotypic data has become one of the major bottlenecks hindering crop breeding and functional genomics studies.Nevertheless, recent technological advances provide us potential solutions to relieve this bottleneck and to explore advanced methods for large-scale phenotyping data acquisition and processing in the coming years. In this article,we review the major progress on high-throughput phenotyping in controlled environments and field conditions as well as its use for post-harvest yield and quality assessment in the past decades. We then discuss the latest multi-omics research combining high-throughput phenotyping with genetic studies. Finally,we propose some conceptual challenges and provide our perspectives on how to bridge the phenotype-genotype gap.It is no doubt that accurate high-throughput phenotyping will accelerate plant genetic improvements and promote the next green revolution in crop breeding. | Wanneng Yang Hui Feng Xuehai Zhang Jian Zhang John H.Doonan William David Batchelor Lizhong Xiong Jianbing Yan | 2020 | Molecular Plant2020,13,2: | 38
Development of a Haploid-Inducer Mediated Genome Editing System for Accelerating Maize Breeding显示文摘Crop breeding aims to generate pure in bred lines with multiple desired traits. Doubled haploid (DH) and genome editing using CRISPR/Cas9 are two powerful game-changing technologies in crop breeding. However, both of them still fall short for rapid generation of pure elite lines with integrated favorable traits. Here, we report the development of a Haploid-Inducer Mediated Genome Editing (IMGE) approach, which utilizes a maize haploid inducer line carrying a CRISPR/Cas9 cassette targeting for a desired agronomic trait to pollinate an elite maize in bred line and to generate genome-edited haploids in the elite maize background. Homozygous pure DH lines with the desired trait improvement could be generated within two generations, thus bypassing the lengthy procedure of repeated crossing and backcrossing used in conventional breeding for integrating a desirable trait into elite commercial backgrounds. | Baobao Wang Lei Zhu Binbin Zhao Yongping Zhao Yurong Xie Zhigang Zheng Yaoyao Li Juan Sun Haiyang Wang | 2019 | Molecular Plant2019,12,4: | 32
Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and Nitrous Oxide Emissions from a Rice-Wheat Rotation as Affected by Crop Residue Incorporation and Temperature显示文摘Field measurements were made from June 2001 to May 2002 to evaluate the e?ect of crop residue application and temperature on CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions within an entire rice-wheat rotation season. Rapeseed cake and wheat straw were incorporated into the soil at a rate of 2.25 t hm?2 when the rice crop was transplanted in June 2001. Compared with the control, the incorporation of rapeseed cake enhanced the emissions of CO2, CH4, and N2O in the rice-growing season by 12.3%, 252.3%, and 17.5%, respectively, while no further e?ect was held on the emissions of CO2 and N2O in the following wheat- growing season. The incorporation of wheat straw enhanced the emissions of CO2 and CH4 by 7.1% and 249.6%, respectively, but reduced the N2O emission by 18.8% in the rice-growing season. Signi?cant reductions of 17.8% for the CO2 and of 12.9% for the N2O emission were observed in the following wheat- growing season. A positive correlation existed between the emissions of N2O and CO2 (R2 = 0.445,n = 73,p < 0.001) from the rice-growing season when N2O was emitted. A trade-o? relationship between the emissions of CH4 and N2O was found in the rice-growing season. The CH4 emission was signi?cantly correlated with the CO2 emission for the period from rice transplantation to ?eld drainage, but not for the entire rice-growing season. In addition, air temperature was found to regulate the CO2 emissions from the non-waterlogged period over the entire rice-wheat rotation season and the N2O emissions from the non- waterlogged period of the rice-growing season, which can be quantitatively described by an exponential function. The temperature coe?cient (Q10) was then evaluated to be 2.3±0.2 for the CO2 emission and 3.9±0.4 for the N2O emission, respectively. | ZOU Jianwen(邹建文) HUANG Yao(黄耀) ZONG Lianggang(宗良纲) ZHENG Xunhua(郑循华) WANG Yuesi(王跃思) | 2004 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2004,21,5: | 29
Perspectives on the Application of Genome-Editing Technologies in Crop Breeding显示文摘Most conventional and modern crop-improvement methods exploit natural or artificially induced genetic variations and require laborious characterization of the progenies of multiple generations derived from time-consuming genetic crosses.Genome-editing systems,in contrast, provide the means to rapidly modify genomes in a precise and predictable way, making it possible to introduce improvements directly into elite varieties. Here,we describe the range of applications available to agricultural researchers using existing genome-editing tools. In addition to providing examples of genome-editing applications in crop breeding,we discuss the technical and social challenges faced by breeders using genome-editing tools for crop improvement. | Kai Hua Jinshan Zhang Jose Ramon Botella Changle Ma Fanjiang Kong Baohui Liu Jian-Kang Zhu | 2019 | Molecular Plant2019,12,8: | 19
Emission factors of gaseous carbonaceous species from residential combustion of coal and crop residue briquettes显示文摘Experiments were performed to measure the emission factors (EFs) of gaseous carbonaceous species, such as CO2, CO, CH4, and non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs), from the combustion of five types of coal of varying organic maturity and two types of biomass briquettes under residential burning conditions. Samples were collected in stainless steel canisters and 2,4- dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) cartridges and were analyzed by GC FID/MS and HPLC, respectively. The EFs from crop residue briquette burning were generally higher than those from coals, with the exception of CO2. The dominant NMVOC species identified in coal smoke were carbonyls (41.7%), followed by C2 unsaturated hydrocarbons (29.1%) and aromatics (12.1%), while C2 unsaturated hydrocarbons were the dominant species (68.9%) emitted from the combustion of crop residue briquettes, followed by aromatics (14.4%). A comparison of burning normal crop residues in stoves and the open field indicated that briquettes emitted a larger proportion of ethene and acetylene. Both combustion efficiency and coal organic maturity had a significant impact on NMVOC EFs from burning coal: NMVOC emissions increased with increasing coal organic maturity but decreased as the combustion efficiency improved. Emissions from the combustion of crop residue briquettes from stoves occurred mainly during the smoldering process, with low combustion efficiency. Therefore, an improved stove design to allow higher combustion efficiency would be beneficial for reducing emissions of carbonaceous air pollutants. | Qin WANG Chunmei GENG Sihua LU Wentai CHEN Min SHAO | 2013 | Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2013,7,1: | 17
Gene editing in plants:progress and challenges显示文摘The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat(CRISPR)-associated protein 9(Cas9)genome editing system is a powerful tool for targeted gene modifications in a wide range of species, including plants.Over the last few years, this system has revolutionized the way scientists perform genetic studies and crop breeding, due to its simplicity, flexibility, consistency and high efficiency.Considerable progress has been made in optimizing CRISPR/Cas9 systems in plants, particularly for targeted gene mutagenesis. However, there are still a number of important challenges ahead, including methods for the efficient delivery of CRISPR and other editing tools to most plants, and more effective strategies for sequence knock-ins and replacements. We provide our viewpoint on the goals, potential concerns and future challenges for the development and application of plant genome editing tools. | Yanfei Mao Jose Ramon Botella Yaoguang Liu Jian-Kang Zhu | 2019 | National Science Review2019,6,3: | 17
Understanding the biochar’s role in ameliorating soil acidity显示文摘Extensive acidic soils, which suffer from accelerated soil acidification, are found in southern China.Soil acidity, aluminum toxicity, and nutrient deficiencies severely limited crop productivity in acidic soils. It has been widely reported that crop residue biochars can ameliorate acidic soils and increase crop productivity. Here,we summarized the positive effects and mechanisms involved in the correction of soil acidity, the alleviation of aluminum toxicity and the increase of soil pH buffering capacity by crop residue biochars. The carbonate,oxygen-containing functional groups and silicates in biochars are the major components responsible for their efficacy in amending acidic soils and resisting soil re-acidification.We conclude that application of crop residue biochars may be a better option than traditional liming to ameliorate acidic soils.Nonetheless, further researches into soil acidification are still required to address some issues that are controversial and poorly understood. | SHI Ren-yong LI Jiu-yu NI Ni XU Ren-kou | 2019 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2019,18,7: | 14
Timing and splitting of nitrogen fertilizer supply to increase crop yield and efficiency of nitrogen utilization in a wheat–peanut relay intercropping system in China显示文摘Agronomically optimizing the timing and rates of nitrogen(N) fertilizer application can increase crop yield and decrease N loss to the environment. Wheat(Triticum aestivum L.)–peanut(Arachis hypogaea L.) relay intercropping systems are a mainstay of economic and food security in China. We performed a field experiment to investigate the effects of N fertilizer on N recovery efficiency, crop yield, and N loss rate in wheat–peanut relay intercropping systems in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, China during 2015–2017. The N was applied on the day before sowing, the jointing stage(G30) or the booting stage(G40) of winter wheat, and the anthesis stage(R1) of peanut in the following percentage splits: 50-50-0-0(N1), 35-35-0-30(N2), and 35-0-35-30(N3), using 300 kg N ha-1, with 0 kg N ha-1(N0) as control. ^(15)N-labeled(20.14 atom %) urea was used to trace the fate of N in microplots. The yields of wheat and peanut increased by 12.4% and 15.4% under the N2 and N3 treatments, relative to those under the N1 treatment. The ^(15)N recovery efficiencies( ^(15)NRE) were 64.9% and 58.1% for treatments N2 and N3, significantly greater than that for the N1 treatment(45.3%). The potential N loss rates for the treatments N2 and N3 were23.7% and 7.0%, significantly lower than that for treatment N1(30.1%). Withholding N supply until the booting stage(N3) did not reduce the wheat grain yield; however, it increased the N content derived from ^(15)N-labeled urea in peanuts, promoted the distribution of ^(15)N to pods, and ultimately increased pod yields in comparison with those obtained by topdressing N at jointing stage(N2). In comparison with N2, the N uptake and N recovery efficiency(NRE) of N3 was increased by 12.0% and 24.1%,respectively, while the apparent N loss decreased by 16.7%. In conclusion, applying N fertilizer with three splits and delaying topdressing fertilization until G40 of winter wheat increased total grain yields and NRE and reduced N loss. This practice could be an environment-friendly N management strategy for wheat–peanut relay intercropping systems in China. | Zhaoxin Liu Fang Gao Yan Liu Jianqun Yang Xiaoyu Zhen Xinxin Li Ying Li Jihao Zhao Jinrong Li Bichang Qian Dongqing Yang Xiangdong Li | 2019 | The Crop Journal2019,7,1: | 12
Exploring and Exploiting Pan-genomics for Crop Improvement显示文摘Genetic variation ranging from single-nucleotide polymorphisms to large structural variants (SVs) can cause variation of gene content among individuals within the same species. There is an increasing appreciation that a single reference genome is insufficient to capture the full landscape of genetic diversity of a species. Pan-genome analysis offers a platform to evaluate the genetic diversity of a species via investigation of its entire genome repertoire. Although a recent wave of pan-genomic studies has shed new light on crop diversity and improvement using advanced sequencing technology, the potential applications of crop pan-genomics in crop improvement are yet to be fully exploited. In this review, we highlight the progress achieved in understanding crop pan?genomics, discuss biological activities that cause SVs, review important agronomical traits affected by SVs, and present our perspective on the application of pan-genomics in crop improvement. | Yongfu Tao Xianrong Zhao Emma Mace Robert Henry David Jordan | 2019 | Molecular Plant2019,12,2: | 10
Potential Benefits of Biochar in Agricultural Soils:A Review显示文摘Soil degradation, characterized by declines in nutrient status and simultaneous accumulation of pesticide residues,is a major problem affecting agricultural ecosystems.Previous studies indicate that biochar application to soil has promise as a practical method to alleviate these pressures:increasing crop yield and enhancing pesticide degradation. Here,we review the roles of biochar in both chemical and biological promotion of pesticide degradation and the potential benefits of biochar relating to the efficiency of fertilizer use, availability of nutrients, and nutrient exchange.Biochar typically has a high surface area featuring many functional groups,a high cation exchange capacity, and high stability.Major factors that impact on the nutrient retention characteristics of biochar(e.g.,feedstock,pyrolysis temperature, and application rate) are also discussed herein.Nonetheless, more studies of the long-term impacts on soil properties from biochar addition are still required before it can be possible to accurately quantify the sustainability of this approach to sequester carbon and restore soil function. | DING Yang LIU Yunguo LIU Shaobo HUANG Xixian LI Zhongwu TAN Xiaofei ZENG Guangming ZHOU Lu | 2017 | Pedosphere2017,27,4: | 10
Engineering crop nutrient efficiency for sustainable agriculture显示文摘Increasing crop yields can provide food, animal feed, bioenergy feedstocks and biomaterials to meet increasing global demand; however, the methods used to increase yield can negatively affect sustainability. For example, application of excess fertilizer can generate and maintain high yields but also increases input costs and contributes to environmental damage through eutrophication, soil acidification and air pollution. Improving crop nutrient efficiency can improve agricultural sustainability by increasing yield while decreasing input costs and harmful environmental effects. Here, we review the mechanisms of nutrient efficiency(primarily for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and iron) and breeding strategies for improving this trait, along with the role of regulation of gene expression in enhancing crop nutrient efficiency to increase yields. We focus on the importance of root system architecture to improve nutrient acquisition efficiency, as well as the contributions of mineral translocation, remobilization and metabolic efficiency to nutrient utilization efficiency. | Liyu Chen Hong Liao | 2017 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2017,59,10: | 9
Transgenic approaches for improving use efficiency of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in crops显示文摘The success of the Green Revolution largely relies on fertilizers, and a new Green Revolution is very much needed to use fertilizers more economically and efficiently, as well as with more environmental responsibility. The use efficiency of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium is controlled by complex gene networks that co-ordinate uptake, re-distribution, assimilation, and storage of these nutrients. Great progress has been made in breeding nutrient-efficient crops by molecularly engineering root traits desirable for efficient acquisition of nutrients from soil, transporters for uptake, redistribution and homeostasis of nutrients, and enzymes for efficient assimilation. Regulatory and transcription factors modulating these processes are also valuable in breeding crops with improved nutrient use efficiency and yield performance. | TENG Wan HE Xue TONG Yi-ping | 2017 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2017,16,12: | 9
Crop diversity and pest management in sustainable agriculture显示文摘Large-scale crop monocultures facilitate the proliferation and increasing prevalence of diseases and pest insects. Many studies highlight the impacts of plant diversification upon pathogens, and the population dynamics of insects and beneficial organism in agricultural ecosystems. These studies provide evidence that habitat manipulation techniques such as intercropping, relay, and rotation can significantly improve disease and pest management. This review introduces the concept of crop diversity, considers recent insights and mechanisms underlying crop diversity, and discusses its potential for improving sustainable agricultural practices.Recently, the phytobiomes resulting from increased crop diversity are increasingly recognized for their contribution to disease and pest control.Further, understanding the interactions between pathogens or pests with their host phytobiome may lead to novel options for the prevention of pests.Recent advances in the agricultural systems include:(i)a better understanding of the mechanisms of interactions between crop species and genotypes;(ii)ecological progress including a better understanding of the context-dependency of those interactions;and(iii)the role of microtopographic variation in agricultural systems for priming basal resistance to multiple pests and pathogens by intercropped crops. We also highlight recent progress in China and the potential options for habitat management and design that enhance the ecological role of biodiversity in agroecosystems. | HE Han-ming LIU Li-na Shahzad Munir Nawaz Haider Bashir WANG Yi YANG Jing LI Cheng-yun | 2019 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2019,18,9: | 8
Actual evapotranspiration of subalpine meadows in the Qilian Mountains, Northwest China显示文摘As a main component in water balance, evapotranspiration(ET)is of great importance for water saving, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. In this study, the FAO(Food and Agriculture Organization)Penman-Monteith model was used to estimate the magnitude and temporal dynamics of reference evapotranspiration(ET0)in 2014 in subalpine meadows of the Qilian Mountains,Northwest China.Meanwhile, actual ET(ETc)was also investigated by the eddy covariance(EC)system. Results indicated that ETc estimated by the EC System was 583 mm,lower than ET0(923 mm)estimated by the FAO Penman-Monteith model in 2014.Moreover,ET0 began to increase in March and reached the peak value in August and then declined in September, however,ETc began to increase from April and reached the peak value in July, and then declined in August.Total ETc and ET0 values during the growing season(from May to September)were 441 and 666 mm,respectively, which accounted for 75.73%of annual cumulative ETc and 72.34%of annual cumulative ET0,respectively.A crop coefficient(kc)was also estimated for calculating the ETc,and average value of kc during the growing season was 0.81(ranging from 0.45 to 1.16).Air temperature(Ta),wind speed(u),net radiation(Rn)and soil temperature(Ts)at the depth of 5 cm and aboveground biomass were critical factors for affecting kc,furthermore,a daily empirical kc equation including these main driving factors was developed. Our result demonstrated that the ETc value estimated by the data of kc and ET0 was validated and consistent with the growing season data in 2015 and 2016. | GAO Yunfei ZHAO Chuanyan Muhammad W ASHIQ WANG Qingtao RONG Zhanlei LIU Junjie MAO Yahua GUO Zhaoxia WANG Wenbin | 2019 | Journal of Arid Land2019,11,3: | 8
Retrieving crop leaf area index by assimilation of MODIS data into a crop growth model显示文摘Leaf area index (LAI) is an important parameter in monitoring crop growth. One of the methods for retrieving LAI from remotely sensed observations is through inversion of canopy reflectance models. Many model inversion methods fail to account for variable LAI values at different crop growth stages. In this research, we use the crop growth model to describe the LAI changes with crop growth, and consider a priori LAI values at different crop growth stages as constraint information. The key approach of this research is to assimilate multiple canopy reflectance values observed at different growth stages and a priori LAI values into a coupled crop growth and radiative transfer model sequentially using a variational data assimilation algorithm. Adjoint method is used to minimize the cost function. Any other information source can be easily incorporated into the inversion cost function. The validation results show that the time series of MODIS canopy reflectance can greatly reduce the uncertainty of the inverted LAI values. Compared with MODIS LAI product at Changping and Shunyi Counties of Beijing, this method has significantly improved the estimated LAI temporal profile. | WANG DongWei1,2,3, WANG JinDi1,2 & LIANG ShunLin4 1 State Key Laboratory of Remote Sensing Science, Jointly Sponsored by Beijing Normal University and Institute of Remote Sensing Applications, CAS, Beijing 100875, China 2 School of Geography, Beijing Key Laboratory of Environmental Remote Sensing and Digital City, Beijing Normal University, Beijing 100875, China 3 Haihe River Water Conservancy Commission, Tianjin 300170, China 4 Department of Geography, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742, USA | 2010 | Science China Earth Sciences2010,53,5: | 8
The effect of integrative crop management on root growth and methane emission of paddy rice显示文摘In previous studies, integrative crop management (ICM) improved shoot growth and grain yield of rice (Oryza sativa L.). However, little is known about the effect of ICM on root growth and methane (CH4) emission of paddy rice. In this study, two rice varieties, Wuyunjing 24 and Yongyou 2640, were grown. A field experiment was conducted with three crop management treatments including zero nitrogen fertilization (0N), local farmer practice (LFP), and ICM. Root morphophysiological traits and CH4 emission from the paddy field were investigated. ICM significantly increased mean grain yield by 29.9%, with the effect attributed mainly to an increase in mean total number of spikelets by 26.4% compared to LFP. ICM increased root and shoot biomass, root length, number of roots, root oxidation activity (ROA), root bleeding rate, and root total and active absorbing surface area by respectively 24.4%, 25.7%, 17.1%, 9.3%, 18.7%, 29.5%, 12.1%, and 24.7%. The concentrations of malic, succinic, and acetic acids in root exudates were respectively 5.8%, 6.0%, and 10.5% higher in ICM than in LFP. Compared to LFP, ICM significantly decreased the rate of CH4 emission during emission peak stages and reduced total CH4 emission by 17.1%. The root morphophysiological traits were positively and significantly correlated with grain yield, whereas root length, specific root length, ROA, and root total and active absorbing surface area were negatively and significantly correlated with total CH4 emission. These results suggest that ICM could achieve the dual goals of increasing grain yield and reducing the greenhouse gas effect by improving the root morphology and physiological traits of paddy rice. | Hao Zhang Hailang Liu Danping Hou Yilei Zhou Mengzhu Liu Zhiqin Wang Lijun Liu Junfei Gu Jianchang Yang | 2019 | The Crop Journal2019,7,4: | 8
Effects of Nitrogen Rate and Split Application Ratio on Nitrogen Use and Soil Nitrogen Balance in Cotton Fields显示文摘The Yellow River valley is one of the three largest cotton production areas in China. An experiment was performed in cotton fields of Anyang,China from 2013 to 2014 to investigate the effects of nitrogen(N) application rate and the ratio between basal and topdressing N fertilizer on N balance in a soil-plant system,N use efficiency, and cotton yield.Five N application rates as treatments were applied with the same split application ratio.Half of the N(50% basal fertilizer) was applied at pre-planting and the other half(50% topdressing fertilizer) at the initial flowering stage. These treatments were:zero N(N0,control),90 kg N ha^(-1)(N90(5/5)),180 kg N ha^(-1)(N180(5/5)),270 kg N ha^(-1)(N270(5/5),a reduced N rate),and 360 kg N ha^(-1)(N360(5/5),a conventional N rate).Additional 2 split application ratios as treatments were applied with the same N rate of 270 kg N ha^(-1).The split application ratios between basal N and topdressing N were 30%:70%(N270(3/7)) and 70%:30%(N270(7/3)).Results demonstrated that soil NH_4-N content in the 0–60 cm layer and NO3-N content in the 0–20 cm layer increased with increased N rate at the squaring and boll-opening stages and then decreased to lower levels at the initial flowering and harvest stages.Soil NO_3-N content in the 20–60 cm layer after the initial flowering stage increased with the increase of topdressing N rate.Soil apparent N surplus varied at different growth stages, while the soil apparent N surplus over the entire growth period exhibited a positive relationship at N rates over 180 kg ha^(-1).Seed cotton yield of N270(3/7) was the highest of all treatments.Plant N uptake,N agronomic efficiency, and apparent N recovery efficiency of N270(3/7) were significantly higher than those of N270(5/5) and N270(7/3) in both growing seasons. These suggest both economic and ecological benefits in cotton production in the Yellow River valley could be created,by appropriately reducing total N application rate and increasing the ratio of topdressing to basal N fertilizer at the initial flowering stage. | LI Pengcheng DONG Helin LIU Aizhong LIU Jingran SUN Miao LI Yabing LIU Shaodong ZHAO Xinhua MAO Shuchun | 2017 | Pedosphere2017,27,4: | 7
Research advances of SAR remote sensing for agriculture applications: A review显示文摘Synthetic aperture radar(SAR) is an effective and important technique in monitoring crop and other agricultural targets because its quality does not depend on weather conditions. SAR is sensitive to the geometrical structures and dielectric properties of the targets and has a certain penetration ability to some agricultural targets. The capabilities of SAR for agriculture applications can be organized into three main categories: crop identification and crop planting area statistics, crop and cropland parameter extraction, and crop yield estimation. According to the above concepts, this paper systematically analyses the recent progresses, existing problems and future directions in SAR agricultural remote sensing. In recent years, with the remarkable progresses in SAR remote sensing systems, the available SAR data sources have been greatly enriched. The accuracies of the crop classification and parameter extraction by SAR data have been improved progressively. But the development of modern agriculture has put forwarded higher requirements for SAR remote sensing. For instance, the spatial resolution and revisiting cycle of the SAR sensors, the accuracy of crop classification, the whole phenological period monitoring of crop growth status, the soil moisture inversion under the condition of high vegetation coverage, the integrations of SAR remote sensing retrieval information with hydrological models and/or crop growth models, and so on, still need to be improved. In the future, the joint use of optical and SAR remote sensing data, the application of multi-band multi-dimensional SAR, the precise and high efficient modeling of electromagnetic scattering and parameter extraction of crop and farmland composite scene, the development of light and small SAR systems like those onboard unmanned aerial vehicles and their applications will be active research areas in agriculture remote sensing. This paper concludes that SAR remote sensing has great potential and will play a more significant role in the various fields of agricultural remote sensing. | LIU Chang-an CHEN Zhong-xin SHAO Yun CHEN Jin-song Tuya Hasi PAN Hai-zhu | 2019 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2019,18,3: | 7
A scheme for regional rice yield estimation using ENVISAT ASAR data显示文摘Information on rice growing areas and rice production is critical for most rice growing countries to make state and economic policies. However, the areas where rice crop is cultivated are often cloudy and rainy, which entails the use of radar remote sensing data for rice monitoring. In this paper, a practical scheme to integrate multi-temporal and multi-polarization ENVISAT ASAR data into rice crop model for regional rice yield estimation has been presented. To achieve this, rice distribution information should be obtained first by rice mapping method to retrieve rice fields from ASAR images, and then an assimilation method is applied to use the observed multi-temporal rice backscattering coefficients which are grouped for each rice pixel to re-initialize ORYZA2000 to predict rice yield. The assimilation method re-initializes the model with optimal input parameters, allowing a better temporal agreement between the rice backscattering coefficients retrieved from ASAR data and the rice backscattering coefficients simulated by a coupled model, i.e., the combination of ORYZA2000 and a semi-empirical rice backscatter model through LAI. The SCE-UA optimization algorithm is employed to determine the optimal set of input parameters. After the re-initialization, rice yield for each rice pixel is calculated, and the yield map over the area of interest is produced. The scheme was validated over Xinghua study area located in the middle of Jiangsu Province of China by using the data set of an experimental campaign carried out during the 2006 rice season. The result shows that the obtained rice yield map generally overestimates the actual rice production by 13% on average and with a root mean square error of approximately 1133 kg/ha on validation sites, but the tendency of rice growth status and spatial variation of the rice yield are well predicted and highly consistent with the actual production variation. | LE TOAN Thuy | 2009 | Science China Earth Sciences2009,52,8: | 7
