New eolian red clay sequence on the western Chinese Loess Plateau linked to onset of Asian desertification about 25 Ma ago显示文摘The expansion of inland Asia deserts has considerably influenced the environmental, social and economic activities in Asia. Aridification of inland Asia, especially timing of the initiation of Asian desertification, is a contentious topic in paleoclimatology. Late Cenozoic eolian loess-red clay sequences on the Chinese Loess Plateau, which possess abundant paleoclimatic and paleo-environmental information, can be regarded as an indicator of inland Asia desertification. Here we present a detailed magnetostratigraphic investigation of a new red clay sequence about 654 m in Zhuanglang located at the western Chinese Loess Plateau. Sedimentological, geochemical, mineralogical, and quartz morphological lines of evidence show that the red clay is of eolian origin. Magnetostratigraphic correlations indicate that this core sequence spans from 25.6 to 4.8 Ma, and typical eolian red clay appears as early as 25 Ma. This extends the lower limit of the red clay on the Chinese Loess Plateau from the previously thought early Miocene back into the late Oligocene. This new red clay record further implies that the inland Asia desertification was initiated at least by the late Oligocene. This sequence provides a unique high-resolution geological record for understanding the inland Asia desertification process since the late Oligocene. | QIANG XiaoKe AN ZhiSheng SONG YouGui CHANG Hong SUN YouBin LIU WeiGuo AO Hong DONG JiBao FU ChaoFeng WU Feng LU FengYan CAI YanJun ZHOU WeiJian CAO JunJi XU XinWen AI Li | 2011 | Science China Earth Sciences2011,54,1: | 73
Tree-ring precipitation records from Baiyinaobao, Inner Mongolia since A.D. 1838显示文摘Correlation function analysis shows that total precipitation from April to early July (to July 10) in growing season limits the ring width of Picea Koraiensis significantly in Baiyinaobao, Xilinhot, Inner Mongolia. Thus a transfer function is designed to reconstruct the total precipitation from April to early July over the region for the last 160 years. The explained variance of the reconstruction is 49.3% (and 45.7% when adjusted for loss of degrees of freedom, N = 31, r = 0.702, F = 13.608, p < 0.0001). There are three relatively wet periods in the reconstruction which are: 1869—1875, 18861921 and 19431968, and four relatively dry periods: 1851—1868, 1876—1885, 1922—1943 and 1969—1999. Among them, the wet periods of 1886—1921 and 1943—1968, and the dry period of 1922—1943 appeared almost at the same time with those in Mt. Qilian region. Meanwhile, the dry period of 1922—1943 corresponds to high temperature and low rainfall during the 1920s and thereafter, and wetness of 1943—1968 corresponds very well to low temperature and more precipitation after the 1940s in Northwest, Northern China and the Changjiang River drainage basin. Calculation shows that the reconstruction series is significantly correlated with local dry-wet index (r = -0.234, p < 0.007, N = 143). Wavelet analysis indicates that there is a 22-a cycle in the precipitation of April to early July during 18381920, and an 11-a cycle during 1920—1952. No more cycles that reach 95% confidence limits are identified after 1953. The precipitation from April to early July quickly dropped into low during the 1920s. After 1950, precipitation shows a declining trend, but the reconstruction shows a tendency of increase in the late of 1990s. | LIU Yu CAI Qiufang Park Won-Kyu AN Zhisheng MA Limin | 2003 | Chinese Science Bulletin2003,48,11: | 29
Carbon isotopic composition of modern soil and paleosol as a response to vegetation change on the Chinese Loess Plateau显示文摘The relationship between the carbon isotopic composition of paleosols and paleovegetation on the Loess Plateau is still unclear. One of the main reasons is that we are short of knowledge about the characteristics of the carbon isotopic composition of modern soil in this area. A preliminary investigation of the carbon isotopic compositions of the modern soil and the loess/paleosol sequence on the Loess Plateau shows that the carbon isotopic composition of modern soil is consistent with the distribution of modern plants on the Loess Plateau, where the ecosystem is dominated by a mixture of C4 and C3 plants. Comparing theδ13C values of modern soil and loess-paleosol sequences from the Xunyi profile, we conclude that C3 plants dominated the landscape during loess sediment stages, while C4 plants expanded during paleosol stages. | LIU Weiguo NING Youfeng AN Zhisheng WU Zhenghai LU Huayu CAO Yunning | 2005 | Science China Earth Sciences2005,48,1: | 24
Amplitudes, rates, periodicities and causes of temperature variations in the past 2485 years and future trends over the central-eastern Tibetan Plateau显示文摘Amplitudes, rates, periodicities, causes and future trends of temperature variations based on tree rings for the past 2485 years on the central-eastern Tibetan Plateau were analyzed. The results showed that extreme climatic events on the Plateau, such as the Medieval Warm Period, Little Ice Age and 20th Century Warming appeared synchronously with those in other places worldwide. The largest amplitude and rate of temperature change occurred during the Eastern Jin Event (343-425 AD), and not in the late 20th century. There were significant cycles of 1324 a, 800 a, 199 a, 110 a and 2-3 a in the 2485-year temperature series. The 1324 a, 800 a, 199 a and 110 a cycles are associated with solar activity, which greatly affects the Earth surface temperature. The long-term trends (>1000 a) of temperature were controlled by the millennium-scale cycle, and amplitudes were dominated by multi-century cycles. Moreover, cold intervals corresponded to sunspot minimums. The prediction indicated that the temperature will decrease in the future until to 2068 AD and then increase again. | LIU YU CAI QiuFang SONG HuiMing AN ZhiSheng Hans W. | 5 | Pretreated methods on loess-palaeosol samples granulometry显示文摘Twenty representative samples were collected from the Chinese loess plateau and each sample was prepared in 6 different ways respectively in order to test the influences of pretreated methods on grain size measurement. The results show that (ⅰ) different pretreated methods can make a big difference for the samples granulometry; (ⅱ) soaking in distilled water for one day, and then treating with an ultrasonic machine for 10 min can make the sample dispersed. | Huayu Lu Zhisheng An | 1998 | Chinese Science Bulletin1998,43,3: | 20
The δ^(18)O variation of a stalagmite from Qixing Cave,Guizhou Province and indi-cated climate change during the Holocene显示文摘A stalagmite from Qixing Cave, Guizhou Province was dated with the TIMS U-series method and its oxygen isotope composition was analyzed. On the basis of the ages and the variations of the δ18O of the stalagmite, the climate change of the last 7.7 ka has been reconstructed in this area: 7.7-5.8 ka, summer monsoon maximum period; 5.8-3.8 ka summer monsoon weakening period; 3.8-0.15 ka, weakened summer monsoon and high amplitude climate fluctuations period. We put forward that the increasing trend of δ18O of the stalagmite reflected not only the weakening of the summer monsoon, which was caused by the decreasing of solar radiation in the Northern Hemisphere, but also the possibly decreasing contribution of the southwest monsoon to the rainfall of this area. These results are consistent with the output of the numerical climate-model modeling. The high amplitude fluctuation of the δ18O may imply the quick shift of the contributions of different moisture sources to the precipitation in this area. | CAI Yanjun, ZHANG Meiliang, PENG Zicheng, LIN Yushi, AN Zhisheng, ZHANG Zhaofeng & CAO YunningState Key Laboratory of Loess and Quaternary Geology, Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xi’an 710054, China Karst Dynamics Laboratory, Ministry of Land and Resources, Guilin 541003, China Department of Earth and Space Science, University of Science & Technology of China, Hefei 230023, China | 2001 | Chinese Science Bulletin2001,46,22: | 18
An 8.1Ma calcite record of Asian summer monsoon evolution on the Chinese central Loess Plateau显示文摘Carbonates in loess-red clay sequences consist mainly of calcite and dolomite. The EDTA analysis of carbonates in different size fractions and magnetic susceptibility reveal that calcite is a sensitive index of summer monsoon. The chemical analysis of carbonates and calcite from an 8.1 Ma loess-red clay sequence at Chaona on the Chinese central Loess Plateau shows that the evolution of the Asian summer monsoon experienced four stages, namely 8.1―5.5 Ma, 5.5―2.8 Ma, 2.8―1.5 Ma and 1.5―0 Ma, with increasing intensification and fluctuation, suggesting a possible combining impacts of uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and global changes on the Asian summer monsoon. | CHEN XiuLing FANG XiaoMin AN ZhiSheng HAN WenXia WANG Xin BAI Yan HONG Ye | 2007 | Science China Earth Sciences2007,50,3: | 16
Modern pollen rain in the Lake Qinghai basin, China显示文摘Lake Qinghai is the largest inland brackish lake in China and lies within the NE Tibetan Plateau. Our study shows that pollen assemblages in each vegetation belt are significantly correlated with the vegetation types of this area. Among the herbaceous and shrubby pollen assemblages, Artemisia is over-represented, while Poaceae, Cyperaceae and Polygonaceae are under-represented. Artemisia/ Chenopodiaceae (A/C) ratios with the regional vegetation characteristic can be used as a proper index to reconstruct the history of vegetation and climate in Lake Qinghai basin. Modern pollen in the lake mainly comes from the nearby vegetation, controlled by the directions and velocity of the wind. The distribution of modern pollen in Lake Qinghai tends to be similar in most part of the lake. The difference of pollen sedimentation process in the lake can be potentially influenced by the focusing function of the lake, river streams, and lake current. | SHANG Xue LI XiaoQiang AN ZhiSheng JI Ming ZHANG HongBin | 2009 | Science China Earth Sciences2009,52,10: | 15

Millennial-scale climate change since the last glaciation recorded by grain sizes of loess deposits on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau显示文摘Whether climatic changes in high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere since the last glaciation have effects on the Tibetan Plateau monsoon, and the variation characteristics of the Plateau monsoon itself are still not solved but of great significance. The 22-m high-resolution Ioess-paleosol sequence in the Hezuo Basin on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau demonstrates that the Plateau winter monsoon experienced a millennial variation similar to high latitude Northern Hemisphere, with cold events clearly correlated with Heinrich events but less for the warm events (Dansgarrd-Oeschger events). It may indicate that the climate system at high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere had played an important role in both the Plateau monsoon and the high-level westerlies. On 10^4 year scale, there are two distinct anomalous changes, which are not found in the records from high latitude northern hemisphere, revealed by the loess grain size in the Hezuo Basin. One is that there was a considerable grain size increase at -36 kaBP, suggesting an abrupt enhancement of the Plateau winter monsoon at that time; the other is that, during 43--36 kaBP, the grain size decreased distinctly, indicating a notable weakening of the Plateau winter monsoon around that period. Both of the two anomalies suggest that the Tibetan climate may have been controlled by some other factors, besides the high latitude climatic changes in the Northern Hemisphere. | Lü Lianqing FANG Xiaomin LU Huayu HAN Yongxiang YANG Shengli LI Jijun AN Zhisheng | 2004 | Chinese Science Bulletin2004,49,11: | 13
Solar influenced late Holocene temperature changes on the northern Tibetan Plateau显示文摘Considerable efforts have been made to extend temperature records beyond the instrumental period through proxy reconstructions,in order to further understand the mechanisms of past climate variability.Yet,the global coverage of existing temperature records is still limited, especially for some key regions like the Tibetan Plateau and for earlier times including the Medieval Warm Period(MWP).Here we present decadally-resolved,alkenone-based,temperature records from two lakes on the northern Tibetan Plateau.Characterized by marked temperature variability, our records provide evidence that temperatures during the MWP were slightly higher than the modern period in this region.Further, our temperature reconstructions, within age uncertainty, can be well correlated with solar irradiance changes, suggesting a possible link between solar forcing and natural climate variability,at least on the northern Tibetan Plateau. | HE YuXin LIU WeiGuo ZHAO Cheng WANG Zheng WANG HuanYe LIU Yi QIN XianYan HU QiHou AN ZhiSheng LIU ZhongHui | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,9: | 11
Magnetostratigraphy of Late Tertiary sediments from the Chinese Loess Plateau and its paleoclimatic significance显示文摘The Late Tertiary red clay/bed sediments underlying the Quaternary loess-paleosol in the Chinese Loess Plateau possesses high-resolution paleoclimatic changes related to the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau. Magnetostratigra-phy and susceptibility measurements are discussed in this paper. The paleomagnetic results show that the red clay/bed began to accumulate at about 8.1 Ma, which represents the oldest Late Tertiary deposit continuously in the central Loess Plateau. The magnetic susceptibility curves show stepwise increases since the initiation of red clay, superimposed on several peaks. Moreover, the magnetic susceptibility increased abruptly since 3.8 Ma, which probably indicates the inception of the modern East Asia monsoon system. Between 3.8 and 2.6 Ma, the stepwise increases of susceptibility may imply progressively intensified East Asia summer monsoon activity related with the stepwise uplift process of the Tibetan Plateau. | SONG Yougui FANG Xiaomin MASAYUKI Torii NAOTO Ishikawa LI Jijun AN Zhisheng | 2001 | Chinese Science Bulletin2001,46,S1: | 9
Grain size distribution of quartz isolated from Chinese loess/ paleosol显示文摘Grain size distribution of bulk loess-paleosol and quartz chemically extracted from the loess/paleosol shows that mean size of the bulk samples is always finer than that of the quartz. The original aeolian depositions have been modified to various degrees by post-depositional weathering and pedogenic processes. The grain size distribution of the isolated quartz should be close to that of the primary aeolian sediment because the chemical pretreatment excludes secondary produced minerals. Therefore, the grain size of the quartz may be considered to more clearly reflect the variations of winter monsoon intensity. | SUN Youbin LU Huayu AN Zhisheng | 2000 | Chinese Science Bulletin2000,45,24: | 9
The forecast of seasonal precipitation trend at the north Helan Mountain and Baiyinaobao regions, Inner Mongolia for the next 20 years显示文摘By using Caterpillar-SSA analysis method, through the process of embedding, singular value decompo-sition, grouping and diagonal averaging, the seasonal pre-cipitation trend at north Helan Mountain and Baiyinaobo regions, Inner Mongolia for the next 20 years is forecasted. The results show an increasing precipitation trend from 1992 to 2004. In the subsequent decade the precipitation should reduce quickly, and it will reach a minimum near 2012 to 2014 in both regions. The drought caused by the decrease of the precipitation from May to July in the north Helan Mountain area during the period of 2013—2014 is probably quite similar to that around 1929. | 15 | Pollen record from red clay sequence in the central Loess Plateau between 8.10 and 2.60Ma显示文摘The Late Miocene and Pliocene are the key periods for understanding the origin and development of the present Asian monsoon circulations and ecologic environ-ments. Here we present a pollen record from Chaona Red Clay section located in the central Loess Plateau in attempt to establish the histories of vegetation and associated climate changes between 8.10 and 2.60 Ma. Our results show that Gramineae-dominated woodland-grasslands developed in this region with Cedrus- and Pinus-characterized montane coniferous forests distributing in higher elevations from 8.10 to 6.73 Ma, probably suggesting a semi-humid climate in a warm-temperate zone. A subsequent expansion of Ulmus- dominated deciduous forests and a synchronous increase of Gramineae-dominated grassland reflect a warmer and more humid climate between 6.73 and 5.67 Ma. The vegetation changed to an Artemisia- and Gramineae-characterized steppe in lower elevations and to a coniferous forest in higher elevations from 5.67 to 3.71 Ma, implying probably a warm and semiarid climate in lowland and hill, and a colder and moister climate in mountain. During this period, a consider-able warmer and more humid climate occurred between 4.61 and 4.07 Ma as indicated by pollen assemblages. The period between 3.71 and 2.58 Ma was characterized by the disap-pearance of Cedrus and Tsuga and also by an abrupt expan-sion of Cupressaceae, reflecting a drastic enhancement of monsoon-related climatic seasonality. | MA Yuzhen WU Fuli FANG Xiaomin LI Jijun AN Zhisheng WANG Wei | 2005 | Chinese Science Bulletin2005,50,19: | 7
Geochemical characteristics and origin of gases from the Upper,Lower Paleozoic and the Mesozoic reservoirs in the Ordos Basin,China显示文摘The Ordos Basin, the second largest sedimentary basin in China, contains the broad distribution of natural gas types. So far, several giant gas fields have been discovered in the Upper and Lower Paleozoic in this basin, each having over 1000×10 8 m 3 of proven gas reserves, and several gas pools have also been discovered in the Mesozoic. This paper collected the data of natural gases and elucidated the geochemical characteristics of gases from different reservoirs, and then discussed their origin. For hydrocarbons preserved in the Upper Paleozoic, the elevatedδ13C values of methane, ethane and propane indicate that the gases would be mainly coal-formed gases;the singular reversal in the stable carbon isotopes of gaseous alkanes suggests the mixed gases from humic sources with different maturity. In the Lower Paleozoic,theδ13C 1 values are mostly similar with those in the Upper Paleozoic, but theδ13C 2 andδ13C 3 values are slightly lighter, suggesting that the gases would be mixing of coal-type gases as a main member and oil-type gases. There are multiple reversals in carbon isotopes for gaseous alkanes, especially abnormal reversal for methane and ethane(i.e.δ13C 1 >δ13C 2 ),inferring that gases would be mixed between high-mature coal-formed gases and oil-type gases. In the Mesozoic, the δ13Cvalues for gaseous alkanes are enriched in 12C,indicating that the gases are mainly derived from sapropelic sources;the carbon isotopic reversal for propane and butane in the Mesozoic is caused by microbial oxidation and mixing of gases from sapropelic sources with different maturity. In contrast to the Upper Paleozoic gases, the Mesozoic gases are characterized by heavier carbon isotopes of iso-butane than normal butane, which may be caused by gases generated from different kerogen types. Finally, according toδ13C 1 -Ro relationship and extremely low total organic carbon contents, the Low Paleozoic gases would not be generated from the Ordovician source as a main gas source, bycontrast, the Upper Paleozoic source as a main gas source is contributed to the Lower Paleozoic gases. | HU AnPing 1 ,Li Jian 2 ,ZHANG WenZheng 3 ,LI ZhiSheng 2 ,HOU Lu 4 &LIU QuanYou 5 1 Department of Earth Sciences,Zhejiang University,Hangzhou 310027,China 2 Langfang Branch,Reasearch Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development,PetroChina,Langfang 065007,China 3 Institute of Exploration and Development,PetroChina Changqing Oilfield Company,Xi’an 710021,China 4 University of Petroleum,Beijing102249,China 5 PetroChina Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development,Beijing 100083,China | 2008 | Science China Earth Sciences2008,51,S1: | 6
Variation of soil Δδ^(13)C values in Xifeng loess-paleosol sequence and its paleoenvironmental implication显示文摘The carbon isotopic compositions of soil organic matter (SOM) and total carbonate (TC) in Xifeng loess-paleosol sequence have been studied. The δ 13CSOM values vary from ?23.8‰ to ?20.2‰, which are higher in interglacial than in glacial stages. Contrary to δ 13CSOM values, the δ 13CTC values vary from ?8.5‰ to ?3.6‰ and are lower in interglacial than in glacial stages. The differences (?δ 13C) be- tween the δ 13CSOM and δ 13CTC values vary from 14.1‰ to 19.4‰. Our results from the Xifeng loess- paleosol sequence indicate that the ?δ 13C values represent the ratio of primary carbonate (PC) to secondary carbonate (SC). The ?δ 13C values were high in the loess stages, and the maximal PC-to-SC ratio can reach 6:4. But in the paleosol stages, the ?δ 13C values were low, with a small proportion of PC. The ?δ 13C values in loess-paleosol sequence also indicate the contributions of the dust to the loess sediment in the Chinese Loess Plateau because the dust contains the PC. | NING Youfeng LIU Weiguo AN Zhisheng | 2006 | Chinese Science Bulletin2006,51,11: | 6
Spatial pattern of modern sedimentation rate of Qinghai Lake and a preliminary estimate of the sediment flux显示文摘We investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of1 37Cs radioactivity in surface sediment of Qinghai Lake, and developed the spatial pattern of sedimentation rate.The1 37Cs inventory is higher near the estuary/bank area, but lower at the central lake.On the other hand, the average1 37Cs activity is lower near the estuary/bank area, but higher at the central lake. The mass accumulation rate(MAR) and the fluxes and contents of the terrestrial detritus(e.g.SiO2,Fe2O3,and Ti) are higher near the estuary/bank area, but lower at the central lake. The chemical/biogenic deposits(e.g.the autogenic carbonates) take up higher fractions at the central lake. These suggest that the spatial pattern of recent sedimentation rate is dominated by the deposition of terrestrial detritus. The average MAR(0.0337 g cm-2a-1) was estimated based on those of different cores of Qinghai Lake and was verified by a Ca mass-balance method. The fluxes of total lake sediments, terrestrial detritus, and direct atmospheric deposits were also estimated. | XU Hai LIU XiaoYan AN ZhiSheng HOU ZhaoHua DONG JiBao LIU Bin | 2010 | Chinese Science Bulletin2010,55,7: | 6

Clay mineral records of the Erlangjian drill core sediments from the Lake Qinghai Basin, China显示文摘Located at the northeastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(QTP) in the Asian interior, the Lake Qinghai is sensitive to environmental change and thus an outstanding site for studying paleoenvironmental changes. Thick deposits in the Lake Qinghai provide important geological archives for obtaining high-resolution records of continental environmental history. The longest drilling core obtained from the Lake Qinghai, named Erlangjian(ELJ), reached about 1109 m and was investigated to determine its clay mineral assemblage and grain size distributions. Clay mineralogical proxies, including type, composition, and their ratios, as well as the illite crystallinity(KI) and chemical index(CI), in combination with grain size data, were used for reconstructing the history of paleoenvironmental evolution since the late Miocene in the Lake Qinghai Basin. The clay mineral records indicate that the clay mainly comprise detritus originating from peripheral material and has experienced little or no diagenesis. The proportion of authigenic origin was minor. Illite was the most abundant clay mineral, followed by chlorite, kaolinite, and smectite. Variations of clay mineral indexes reflect the cooling and drying trends in the Lake Qinghai region, and the grain size distribution is coincided with the clay minerals indexes. The paleoclimatic evolution of the Lake Qinghai Basin since the late Miocene can be divided into five intervals. The climate was relatively warm and wet in the early of late Miocene, then long-term trends in climate change character display cooling and drying; later in the late Miocene until early Pliocene the climate was in a short relatively warm and humid period; since then the climate was relatively colder and drier. These results also suggest multiple tectonic uplift events in the northeastern QTP. | ZENG MengXiu SONG YouGui AN ZhiSheng CHANG Hong LI Yue | 2014 | Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,8: | 4
