Review on utilization of biochar for metal-contaminated soil and sediment remediation显示文摘Biochar is a carbon-neutral or even carbon-negative material produced through thermal decomposition of plant-and animal-based biomass under oxygen-limited conditions.Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the application of biochar as an adsorbent, soil ameliorant and climate mitigation approach in many types of applications.Metal-contaminated soil remediation using biochar has been intensively investigated in small-scale and pilot-scale trials with obtained beneficial results and multifaceted effects. But so far, the study and application of biochar in contaminated sediment management has been very limited, and this is also a worldwide problem. Nonetheless, there is reason to believe that the same multiple benefits can also be realized with these sediments due to similar mechanisms for stabilizing contaminants. This paper provides a review on current biochar properties and its use as a sorbent/amendment for metal-contaminated soil/sediment remediation and its effect on plant growth, fauna habits as well as microorganism communities. In addition, the use of biochar as a potential strategy for contaminated sediment management is also discussed, especially as regards in-situ planning. Finally, we highlight the possibility of biochar application as an effective amendment and propose further research directions to ensure the safe and sustainable use of biochar as an amendment for remediation of contaminated soil and sediment. | Mingming Wang Yi Zhu Lirong Cheng Bruce Andserson Xiaohui Zhao Dayang Wang Aizhong Ding | 2018 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2018,30,1: | 43
Experimental evidence for aerobic bio-denitriflcation显示文摘Nitrate pollution of groundwater is paid more and more attention for its hazardous to environments and human health. A strain of DN11 was isolated from soil and used in the laboratory columns filled with various media for nitrate removal. The experimental results showed that DN11 could reduce nitrate at different rates in different media under the aerobic condition. The mechanism for nitrate removal with DN11 is explained meanwhile. | DING Aizhong, FU Jiamo & SHENG GuoyingKey Laboratory of Resources Utilization and Environment Protection of Guangdong Province, Guangzhou 510640, China State Key Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry, Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou 510640, China Correspondence should be addressed to Ding Aizhong | 2000 | Chinese Science Bulletin2000,45,S1: | 10
Removal of Cs+ from water and soil by ammonium-pillared montmorillonite/Fe3O4 composite显示文摘To remove cesium ions from water and soil, a novel adsorbent was synthesized by following a one-step co-precipitation method and using non-toxic raw materials. By combining ammonium-pillared montmorillonite(MMT) and magnetic nanoparticles(Fe_3O_4), an MMT/Fe_3O_4 composite was prepared and characterized. The adsorbent exhibited high selectivity of Cs^+ and could be rapidly separated from the mixed solution under an external magnetic field. Above all, the adsorbent had high removal efficiency in cesium-contaminated samples(water and soil) and also showed good recycling performance, indicating that the MMT/Fe_3O_4 composite could be widely applied to the remediation of cesium-contaminated environments. It was observed that the pH, solid/liquid ratio and initial concentration affected adsorption capacity. In the presence of coexisting ions, the adsorption capacity decreased in the order of Ca^(2+)> Mg^(2+)> K^+> Na^+, which is consistent with our theoretical prediction. The adsorption behavior of this new adsorbent could be expressed by the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich isotherm. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of Cs^+ was NH_4^+ ion exchange and surface hydroxyl group coordination, with the former being more predominant. | Xianming Zheng Junfeng Dou Jing Yuan Wei Qin Xiaoxi Hong Aizhong Ding | 2017 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,6: | 10
Anaerobic benzene biodegradation by a pure bacterial culture of Bacillus cereus under nitrate reducing conditions显示文摘A pure culture using benzene as sole carbon and energy sources was isolated by screening procedure from gasoline contaminated soil. The analysis of the 16S rDNA gene sequence, morphological and physiological characteristics showed that the isolated strain was a member of genus Bacillus cereus. The biodegradation performance of benzene by B.cereus was evaluated, and the results showed that benzene could be efficiently biodegraded when the initial benzene concentration was below 150 mg/L.The metabolites of anaerobic nitrate-dependent benzene oxidation by strain B.cereus were identified as phenol and benzoate. The results of substrate interaction between binary combinations for benzene, phenol and benzoate showed that the simultaneous presence of benzene stimulated the degradation of benzoate, whereas the addition of benzene inhibited the degradation of phenol.Benzene degradation by B.cereus was enhanced by the addition of phenol and benzoate, the enhanced effects were more pronounced at higher concentration. To our knowledge, this is the first report that the isolated bacterial culture of B.cereus can efficiently degraded benzene under nitrate reducing conditions. | Junfeng Dou Aizhong Ding Xiang Liu Yongchao Du Dong Deng Jinsheng Wang | 2010 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2010,22,5: | 6
Assessing the capacity of biochar to stabilize copper and lead in contaminated sediments using chemical and extraction methods显示文摘Because of its high adsorption capacity, biochar has been used to stabilize metals when remediating contaminated soils; to date, however, it has seldom been used to remediate contaminated sediment. A biochar was used as a stabilization agent to remediate Cu-and Pb-contaminated sediments, collected from three locations in or close to Beijing. The sediments were mixed with a palm sawdust gasified biochar at a range of weight ratios(2.5%, 5%, and 10%) and incubated for 10, 30, or 60 days. The performance of the different treatments and the heavy metal fractions in the sediments were assessed using four extraction methods, including diffusive gradients in thin films, the porewater concentration, a sequential extraction, and the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure. The results showed that biochar could enhance the stability of heavy metals in contaminated sediments. The degree of stability increased as both the dose of biochar and the incubation time increased. The sediment p H and the morphology of the metal crystals adsorbed onto the biochar changed as the contact time increased. Our results showed that adsorption, metal crystallization, and the p H were the main controls on the stabilization of metals in contaminated sediment by biochar. | Mingming Wang Liangsuo Ren Dayang Wang Zuansi Cai Xuefeng Xia Aizhong Ding | 2019 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2019,31,5: | 5

Impacts of n-alkane concentration on soil bacterial community structure and alkane monooxygenase genes abundance during bioremediation processes显示文摘Petroleum hydrocarbons, mainly consisting of n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs),are considered as priority pollutants and biohazards in the environment, eventually affecting the ecosystem and human health.Though many previous studies have investigated the change of bacterial community and alkane degraders during the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons, there is still lack of understanding on the impacts of soil alkane contamination level. In the present study, microcosms with different n-alkane contamination(1%,3%and 5%)were set up and our results indicated a complete alkane degradation after 30 and 50 days in 1%-and 3%-alkane treatments, respectively. In all the treatments, alkanes with medium-chain length(C_(11)-C_(14))were preferentially degraded by soil microbes, followed by C27-alkane in 3%and 5%treatments.Alkane contamination level slightly altered soil bacterial community, and the main change was the presence and abundance of dominant alkane degraders.Thermogemmatisporaceae,Gemmataceae and Thermodesulfovibrionaceae were highly related to the degradation of C_(14)-and C_(27)-alkanes in 5%treatment,but linked to alkanes with medium-chain(C11-C18)in 1%treatment and C21-alkane in 3%treatment,respectively.Additionally,we compared the abundance of three alkane-monooxygenase genes,e.g.,alk_A,alk_P and alk_R.The abundance of alk_R gene was highest in soils, and alk_P gene was more correlated with alkane degradation efficiency, especially in 5%treatment.Our results suggested that alkane contamination level showed non-negligible effects on soil bacterial communities to some extents, and particularly shaped alkane degraders and degrading genes significantly. This study provides a better understanding on the response of alkane degraders and bacterial communities to soil alkane concentrations, which affects their biodegradation process. | Yueqiao Liu Aizhong Ding Yujiao Sun Xuefeng Xia Dayi Zhang | 2018 | Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2018,12,5: | 1
