1Intravenous transplantation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells promotes neural regeneration after traumatic brain injury显示文摘To investigate the supplement of lost nerve cells in rats with traumatic brain injury by intravenous administration of allogenic bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, this study established a Wistar rat model of traumatic brain injury by weight drop impact acceleration method and administered 3 × 106 rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells via the lateral tail vein. At 14 days after cell transplantation, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells differentiated into neurons and astrocytes in injured rat cerebral cortex and rat neurological function was improved significantly. 2High HbA1c is associated with higher risk of ischaemic stroke in Pakistani population without diabetes显示文摘Context:The role of glycated haemoglobin(HbA1c)in the prediction of ischaemic stroke in individuals without diabetes is underestimated.Aims:We performed a study to analyse the role of HbA1c in the risk prediction of ischaemic stroke in Pakistani population without diabetes.We further studied the difference between HbA1c values of individuals with diabetes and without diabetes with stroke.Settings and design:Single centre,case–control.Materials and methods:In phase I,a total of 233 patients without diabetes with ischaemic stroke and 245 as controls were enrolled.Association of HbA1c levels,lipid profiles and blood pressure recordings with ischaemic stroke was analysed.In phase II,comparison was done between diabetics and nondiabetics with stroke.Statistical analysis:Comparison of the mean variables was performed with Student’s t-tests.Logistic regression analysis with ischaemic stroke as the dependent variable was performed for phase I.Results:In phase I,the ischaemic stroke group had significantly higher HbA1c levels(5.9±2.9%vs 5.5±1.6%)compared with controls(p<0.05).Triglyceride cholesterol,high-density lipoprotein cholesterol,systolic blood pressure,diastolic blood pressure and HbA1c were the significant determinants of stroke(p<0.05).In phase II,mean HbA1c values were significantly higher in the diabetes group(7.6±2.1 vs 6.1±2.3)(p<0.05)but other parameters were not statistically significantly different(p>0.05).Conclusions:Higher HbA1c indicated a significantly increased risk for ischaemic stroke.An HbA1c value above 5.6%(prediabetic range)predicted future risk of stroke and efforts to maintain glucose level within the normal range(≤5.6%)in individuals with high cardiovascular risk are important.Ali Zohair Nomani Sumaira Nabi Shahzad Ahmed Mansoor Iqbal Haris Majid Rajput Suhail Rao 2016Stroke & Vascular Neurology2016,1,3:2
3The electronic and magnetic properties of wurtzite Mn:CdS, Cr:CdS and Mn:Cr:CdS: first principles calculations显示文摘In this article, density functional theory(DFT) based on generalized gradient approximation(GGA)and GGACU, U is Hubbard term, is used to study the electronic properties of CdS doped with different dopants(Cr, Mn). The calculations are carried out for Mn-doped CdS, Cr-doped CdS, and co-doping of Mn/Cr in CdS simultaneously. It is found that hopping of electrons is possible with Cr:CdS and Mn:Cr:CdS while Mn:CdS does not allow the hopping of electrons. Moreover, double exchange interactions are observed in Cr:CdS and d-d superexchange interactions are observed in Mn:CdS. Now the problem becomes interesting when one magnetic ion(Cr) supporting double exchange interactions and another ion(Mn) supporting d-d super-exchange interactions are doped simultaneously in the same system(CdS). The co-doped CdS is more stable even at high Curie temperature due to p-d double exchange interactions and d-d super exchange interactions. 8Characteristics and clinical presentations of pediatric 0retinoblastoma in North-western Iran显示文摘·AIM:To report the characteristics and clinical presentations of retinoblastoma in a series of pediatric patients from Iran. ·METHODS:In this retrospective study, profiles of pediatric patients with retinoblastoma archived in a referral eye hospital in north-west of Iran during 7 years (n =40 patients with 57 eyes) were reviewed. Demographics, as well as the laterality, clinical manifestations and the types of treatment were the major endpoints. The Student's t test, Mann-Whitney U -test, Chi-square or Fishers' Exact test was used for analysis where appropriate. ·RESULTS:There were 23 cases (57.7%) with unilateral and 17 cases (42.5%) with bilateral involvement. The male to female ratio was 1 to 1.4 with a mean admitting age of 24.0±11.3 (range:5-62) months. The mean diagnosis delay was (7.4±9.6) months (range:10 days to 13 months). The most common presenting sign was leukocoria (97.5%) followed by proptosis (7.5%), strabismus (7.5%), hyphema (5%), orbital cellulitis (5%) and glaucoma (2.5%). Enucleation was performed in 95.7% of the cases with unilateral involvement and at least one eye of the patients with bilateral disease. 14Review of acute ischaemic stroke in Pakistan:progress in management and future perspectives显示文摘Ischaemic stroke is a major cause of neurological morbidity and mortality.The objective of this review article is to summarise facts pertaining to acute ischaemic stroke and its various aspects in a developing country like Pakistan,where resources are limited and the healthcare system is underdeveloped.No large-scale epidemiological studies are available to determine the true incidence of stroke in Pakistan.We reviewed the available literature on stroke from Pakistan and through this article we primarily aim to present the current acute ischaemic stroke management in Pakistan in juxtaposition to that of the developed world.We also intend to highlight areas for future development and improvement in management.The routine practice in Pakistan is that of using stat dose of aspirin in emergency(ER)at large with only a handful of centres offering thrombolytic therapy with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator for acute ischaemic stroke.This too is faced with the problem of long window periods before the patient reaches a proper stroke care centre.The facilities of interventional therapies like arterial thrombolysis and endovascular surgery are non-existent and rehabilitation facilities limited.The opportunities for training physicians in acute stroke are also scarce.Stroke in children is underdiagnosed and that in women not availing facilities at stroke care centres.While basic research has gained pace regarding local demographic data,advanced research and genetic studies are extremely limited.The field of stroke neurology needs to grow at a substantial pace in Pakistan to be at par with the developed world.Ali Zohair Nomani Sumaira Nabi Mazhar Badshah Shahzad Ahmed 2017Stroke & Vascular Neurology2017,2,1:1

18Quality of life of COVID-19 recovered patients:a 1-year follow-up study from Bangladesh显示文摘BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic posed a danger to global public health because of the unprecedented physical,mental,social,and environmental impact affecting quality of life(QoL).The study aimed to find the changes in QoL among COVID-19 recovered individuals and explore the determinants of change more than 1 year after recovery in low-resource settings.MethodsCOVID-19 patients from all eight divisions of Bangladesh who were confirmed positive by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction from June 2020 to November 2020 and who subsequently recovered were followed up twice,once immediately after recovery and again 1 year after the first follow-up.The follow-up study was conducted from November 2021 to January 2022 among 2438 individuals using the World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief Version(WHOQOL-BREF).After excluding 48 deaths,95 were rejected to participate,618 were inaccessible,and there were 45 cases of incomplete data.Descriptive statistics,paired-sample analyses,generalized estimating equation(GEE)analysis,and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to test the mean difference in participants’QoL scores between the two interviews.ResultsMost participants(n=1710,70.1%)were male,and one-fourth(24.4%)were older than 46.The average physical domain score decreased significantly from baseline to follow-up,and the average scores in psychological,social,and environmental domains increased significantly at follow-up(P<0.05).By the GEE equation approach,after adjusting for other factors,we found that older age groups(P<0.001),being female(P<0.001),having hospital admission during COVID-19 illness(P<0.001),and having three or more chronic diseases(P<0.001),were significantly associated with lower physical and psychological QoL scores.Higher age and female sex[adjusted odd ratio(aOR)=1.3,95%confidence interval(CI)1.0–1.6]were associated with reduced social domain scores on multivariable logistic regression analysis.Urban or semi-urban people were 49%less likely(aOR=0.5,95%CI 0.4–0.7)and 32%less likely(aOR=0.7,95%CI 0.5–0.9)to have a reduced QoL score in the psychological domain and the social domain respectively,than rural people.Higher-income people were more likely to experience a decrease in QoL scores in physical,psychological,social,and environmental domains.Married people were 1.8 times more likely(aOR=1.8,95%CI 1.3–2.4)to have a decreased social QoL score.In the second interview,people admitted to hospitals during their COVID-19 infection showed a 1.3 times higher chance(aOR=1.3,95%CI 1.1–1.6)of a decreased environmental QoL score.Almost 13%of participants developed one or more chronic diseases between the first and second interviews.Moreover,7.9%suffered from reinfection by COVID-19 during this 1-year time.ConclusionsThe present study found that the QoL of COVID-19 recovered people improved 1 year after recovery,particularly in psychological,social,and environmental domains.However,age,sex,the severity of COVID-19,smoking habits,and comorbidities were significantly negatively associated with QoL.Events of reinfection and the emergence of chronic disease were independent determinants of the decline in QoL scores in psychological,social,and physical domains,respectively.Strong policies to prevent and minimize smoking must be implemented in Bangladesh,and we must monitor and manage chronic diseases in people who have recovered from COVID-19.Mohammad Delwer Hossain Hawlader Md Utba Rashid Md Abdullah Saeed Khan Mowshomi Mannan Liza Sharmin Akter Mohammad Ali Hossain Tajrin Rahman Sabrina Yesmin Barsha Alberi Afifa Shifat Mosharop Hossian Tahmina Zerin Mishu Soumik Kha Sagar Ridwana Maher Manna Nawshin Ahmed Sree Shib Shankar Devnath Debu Irin Chowdhury Samanta Sabed Mashrur Ahmed Sabrina Afroz Borsha Faraz Al Zafar Sabiha Hyder Abdullah Enam Habiba Babul Naima Nur Miah Md.Akiful Haque Shopnil Roy K.M.Tanvir Hassan Mohammad Lutfor Rahman Mohammad Hayatun Nabi Koustuv Dalal 2023Infectious Diseases of Poverty2023,12,4:0
