1Renin-angiotensin system in the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis显示文摘Hepatic fibrosis is considered a common response to many chronic hepatic injuries.It is a multifunctional process that involves several cell types,cytokines,chemokines and growth factors leading to a disruption of homeostatic mechanisms that maintain the liver ecosystem.In spite of many studies regarding the development of fibrosis,the understanding of the pathogenesis remains obscure.The hepatic tissue remodeling process is highly complex,resulting from the balance between collagen degradation and synthesis.Among the many mediators that take part in this process,the components of the Renin angiotensin system(RAS) have progressively assumed an important role.Angiotensin(Ang)□acts as a profibrotic mediator and Ang-(1-7),the newly recognized RAS component,appears to exert a counter-regulatory role in liver tissue.We briefly review the liver fibrosis process and current aspects of the RAS.This review also aims to discuss some experimental evidence regarding the participation of RAS mediators in the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis,focusing on the putative role of the ACE2-Ang-(1-7)-Mas receptor axis.Regina Maria Pereira Robson Augusto Souza dos Santos Filipi Leles da Costa Dias Mauro Martins Teixeira Ana Cristina Simoes e Silva 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,21:37
2Current knowledge on esophageal atresia显示文摘Esophageal atresia (EA) with or without tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is the most common congenital anomaly of the esophagus. The improvement of survival observed over the previous two decades is multifactorial and largely attributable to advances in neonatal intensive care, neonatal anesthesia, ventilatory and nutritional support, antibiotics, early surgical intervention, surgical materials and techniques. Indeed, mortality is currently limited to those cases with coexisting severe life-threatening anomalies. The diagnosis of EA is most commonly made during the first 24 h of life but may occur either antenatally or may be delayed. The primary surgical correction for EA and TEF is the best option in the absence of severe malformations. There is no ideal replacement for the esophagus and the optimal surgical treatment for patients with long-gap EA is still contro-versial. The primary complications during the postoperative period are leak and stenosis of the anastomosis, gastro-esophageal reflux, esophageal dysmotility, fistula recurrence, respiratory disorders and deformities of the thoracic wall. Data regarding long-term outcomes and follow-ups are limited for patients following EA/TEF repair. The determination of the risk factors for the complicated evolution following EA/TEF repair may positively impact long-term prognoses. Much remains to be studied regarding this condition. 3Injection of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells by intravenous or intraperitoneal routes is a viable alternative to spinal cord injury treatment in mice显示文摘In spite of advances in surgical care and rehabilitation,the consequences of spinal cord injury(SCI)ar still challenging.Several experimental therapeutic strategies have been studied in the SCI field,and recen advances have led to the development of therapies that may act on the inhibitory microenvironment.As sorted lineages of stem cells are considered a good treatment for SCI.This study investigated the effect o systemic transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)in a compressive SCI model.Here we presen results of the intraperitoneal route,which has not been used previously for MSC administration after comveI.WeafC57BL/6nt lmy atb spinal cord compression for 1 minute with a 30-g vascular clip.The animals were divided into five groups DMEM at 7 days after SCI),DMEM i.v.(intravenous injection of 500μL of DMEM at 7 days after SCI)The effects of MSCs transplantation in white matter sparing were analyzed by luxol fast blue staining.Th number of preserved fibers was counted in semithin sections stained with toluidine blue and the presenc of trophic factors was analyzed by immunohistochemistry.In addition,we analyzed the locomotor perfor mance with Basso Mouse Scale and Global Mobility Test.Our results showed white matter preservation and a larger number of preserved fibers in the MSC groups than in the DMEM groups.Furthermore,th MSC groups had higher levels of trophic factors(brain-derived neurotrophic factor,nerve growth factor neurotrophin-3 and neurotrophin-4)in the spinal cord and improved locomotor performance.Our result indicate that injection of MSCs by either intraperitoneal or intravenous routes results in beneficial out comes and can be elected as a choice for SCI treatment.Bruna dos Santos Ramalho FernANDa Martins de Almeida Conrado Mendonca Sales Silmara de Lima Ana Maria Blanco Martinez 2018Neural Regeneration Research2018,13,6:12
4WJSC 6^(th) Anniversary Special Issues(2):Mesenchymal stem cells Neurotrauma and mesenchymal stem cells treatment:From experimental studies to clinical trials显示文摘Mesenchymal stem cell(MSC)therapy has attracted the attention of scientists and clinicians around the world.Basic and pre-clinical experimental studies have highlighted the positive effects of MSC treatment after spinal cord and peripheral nerve injury.These effects are believed to be due to their ability to differentiate into other cell lineages,modulate inflammatory and immunomodulatory responses,reduce cell apoptosis,secrete several neurotrophic factors and respond to tissue injury,among others.There are many pre-clinical studies on MSC treatment for spinal cord injury(SCI)and peripheral nerve injuries.However,the same is not true for clinical trials,particularly those concerned with nerve trauma,indicating the necessity of more well-constructed studies showing the benefits that cell therapy can provide for individuals suffering the consequences of nerve lesions.As for clinical trials for SCI treatment the results obtained so far are not as beneficial as those described in experimental studies.For these reasons basic and pre-clinical studies dealing with MSC therapy should emphasize the standardization of protocols that could be translated to the clinical set with consistent and positive outcomes.This review is based on pre-clinical studies and clinical trials available in the literature from 2010 until now.At the time of writing this article there were 43 and 36 pre-clinical and 19 and 1 clinical trials on injured spinal cord and peripheral nerves,respectively.Ana Maria Blanco Martinez Camila de Oliveira Goulart Bruna dos Santos Ramalho Júlia Teixeira Oliveira Fernanda Martins Almeida 2014World Journal of Stem Cells2014,6,2:11

6Mitomycin C in pterygium treatment显示文摘Pterygium is a benign lesion usually growing from the nasal side of the conjunctiva onto the cornea.Most cases of pterygium does not cause problem or requires specific treatment.The exact cause of pterygium is not clear yet,but some factors are pointed as causes,being the most important the long-term ultraviolet ray exposure.Pterygium surgery is usually considered when there are symptoms that do not respond to conservative treatment.Recurrence is the main complication of the surgery,and much has been done to avoid it.Mitomycin C(MMC) has been used as a fibroblast proliferation inhibitor during the surgery to reduce the chance of recurrence of the pterygium.This review describes the use of MMC as an adjunctive,the optimal dosage,the duration of administration of MMC and possible complications,when used during,after and before the surgery.Most studies suggest that increased exposure(dose or duration) of MMC is associated with a lower recurrence,but with higher risks of complications.Thiago Goncalves dos Santos Martins Ana Luiza Fontes de A zevedo Costa Milton Ruiz Alves Roger Chammas Paulo Schor 2016International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2016,9,3:8

8Metabolic syndrome and colorectal neoplasms:An ominous association显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the association of metabolic syndrome(MS) and colorectal cancer and adenomas in a Western country,where the incidence of MS is over 27%.METHODS:This was a prospective study between March 2013 and March 2014.MS was diagnosed according to the National Cholesterol Education ProgramATP III.Demographic characteristics,anthropometric measurements,metabolic risk factors,and colonoscopic pathologic findings were assessed in patients with MS(group 1) who underwent routine colonoscopy at our department.This data was compared with consecutive patients without metabolic syndrome(group 2),with no differences regarding sex and age.Patients with incomplete colonoscopy,family history,or past history of colorectal neoplasm were excluded.Informed consent was obtained and the ethics committee approved this study.Statistical analysis was performed using Student's t-test and χ2 test,with a P value ≤ 0.05 being considered statistically significant.RESULTS:Of 258 patients,129 had MS;51% males;mean-age 67.1 years(50-87).Among the MS group,94% had high blood pressure,91% had increased waist circumference,60% had diabetes,55% had low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level,50% had increased triglyceride level,and 54% were obese [body mass index(BMI) 30 kg/m2].51% presented 4 criteria of MS.MS was associated with increased prevalence of adenomas(43% vs 25%,P = 0.004) and colorectal cancer(13% vs 5%,P = 0.027),compared with patients without MS.MS was also positively associated with multiple(≥ 3) adenomas(35% vs 9%,P = 0.024) and sessile adenomas(69% vs 53%,P = 0.05).No difference existed between location(P = 0.086),grade of dysplasia(P = 0.196),or size(P= 0.841) of adenomas.In addition,no difference was found between BMI(P = 0.078),smoking(P = 0.146),alcohol consumption(P = 0.231),and the presence of adenomas.CONCLUSION:MS is positively associated with adenomas and colorectal cancer.However,there is not enough information in western European countries to justify screening in patients with MS.To our knowledge,no previous study has evaluated this association in Portuguese patients.Daniel Trabulo Suzane Ribeiro Cláudio Martins Cristina Teixeira Cláudia Cardoso Jo?o Mangualde Ricardo Freire élia Gamito Ana L Alves Fátima Augusto Ana P Oliveira Isabelle Cremers 2015World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,17:5
9Colonic duplication in an adult mimicking a tumor of pancreas显示文摘Duplications of the alimentary tract are uncommon congenital malformations that can present diagnostic difficulties. We report a rare case of a cystic colonic duplication in a female adult. Preoperative investigations were suggestive of pancreatic tumor. The diagnosis was established based on the histopathological examination of the resected specimen. 16Molecular mechanisms underlying the neuroprotection of environmental enrichment in Parkinson’s disease显示文摘Parkinson’s disease is the most common movement disorder,affecting about 1%of the population over the age of 60 years.Parkinson’s disease is characterized clinically by resting tremor,bradykinesia,rigidity and postural instability,as a result of the progressive loss of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons.In addition to this neuronal cell loss,Parkinson’s disease is characterized by the accumulation of intracellular protein aggregates,Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites,composed primarily of the proteinα-synuclein.Although it was first described almost 200 years ago,there are no disease-modifying drugs to treat patients with Parkinson’s disease.In addition to conventional therapies,non-pharmacological treatment strategies are under investigation in patients and animal models of neurodegenerative disorders.Among such strategies,environmental enrichment,comprising physical exercise,cognitive stimulus,and social interactions,has been assessed in preclinical models of Parkinson’s disease.Environmental enrichment can cause structural and functional changes in the brain and promote neurogenesis and dendritic growth by modifying gene expression,enhancing the expression of neurotrophic factors and modulating neurotransmission.In this review article,we focus on the current knowledge about the molecular mechanisms underlying environmental enrichment neuroprotection in Parkinson’s disease,highlighting its influence on the dopaminergic,cholinergic,glutamatergic and GABAergic systems,as well as the involvement of neurotrophic factors.We describe experimental pre-clinical data showing how environmental enrichment can act as a modulator in a neurochemical and behavioral context in different animal models of Parkinson’s disease,highlighting the potential of environmental enrichment as an additional strategy in the management and prevention of this complex disease.Tamara Andrea Alarcón Sarah Martins Presti-Silva Ana Paula Toniato Simões Fabiola Mara Ribeiro Rita Gomes Wanderley Pires 2023Neural Regeneration Research2023,18,7:2
17The genomes of medicinal skullcaps reveal the polyphyletic origins of clerodane diterpene biosynthesis in the family Lamiaceae显示文摘The presence of anticancer clerodane diterpenoids is a chemotaxonomic marker for the traditional Chinese medicinal plant Scutellaria barbata,although the molecular mechanisms behind clerodane biosynthesis are unknown.Here,we report a high-quality assembly of the 414.98 Mb genome of S.barbata into 13 pseudochromosomes.Using phylogenomic and biochemical data,we mapped the plastidial metabolism of kaurene(gibberellins),abietane,and clerodane diterpenes in three species of the family Lamiaceae(Scutellaria barbata,Scutellaria baicalensis,and Salvia splendens),facilitating the identification of genes involved in the biosynthesis of the clerodanes,kolavenol,and isokolavenol.We show that clerodane biosynthesis evolved through recruitment and neofunctionalization of genes from gibberellin and abietane metabolism.Despite the assumed monophyletic origin of clerodane biosynthesis,which is widespread in species of the Lamiaceae,our data show distinct evolutionary lineages and suggest polyphyletic origins of clerodane biosynthesis in the family Lamiaceae.Our study not only provides significant insights into the evolution of clerodane biosynthetic pathways in the mint family,Lamiaceae,but also will facilitate the production of anticancer clerodanes through future metabolic engineering efforts.Haixiu Li Song Wu Ruoxi Lin Yiren Xiao Ana Luisa Malaco Morotti Ya Wang Meytal Galilee Haowen Qin Tao Huang Yong Zhao Xun Zhou Jun Yang Qing Zhao Angelos K.Kanellis Cathie Martin Evangelos C.Tatsis 2023Molecular Plant2023,16,3:2

19Acute kidney injury and electrolyte disorders in COVID-19显示文摘Acute kidney injury(AKI)and electrolyte disorders are important complications of hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)patients.AKI is thought to occur due to multiple pathophysiological mechanisms,such as multiple organ dysfunction(mainly cardiac and respiratory),direct viral entry in the renal tubules,and cytokine release syndrome.AKI is present in approximately one in every ten hospitalized COVID-19 patients.The incidence rates of AKI increase in patients who are admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU),with levels higher than 50%.Additionally,renal replacement therapy(RRT)is used in 7%of all AKI cases,but in nearly 20%of patients admitted to an ICU.COVID-19 patients with AKI are considered moderate-to-severe cases and are managed with multiple interdisciplinary conducts.AKI acts as a risk factor for mortality in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection,especially when RRT is needed.Electrolyte disorders are also common manifestations in hospitalized COVID-19 patients,mainly hyponatremia,hypokalemia,and hypocalcemia.Hyponatremia occurs due to a combination of syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone and gastrointestinal fluid loss from vomiting and diarrhea.When it comes to hypokalemia,its mechanism is not fully understood but may derive from hyperaldosteronism due to renin angiotensin aldosterone system overstimulation and gastrointestinal fluid loss as well.The clinical features of hypokalemia in COVID-19 are similar to those in other conditions.Hypocalcemia is the most common electrolyte disorder in COVID-19 and seems to occur because of vitamin D deficiency and parathyroid imbalance.It is also highly associated with longer hospital and ICU stay.Gabriel Martins Nogueira Noel Lucas Oliveira Rodrigues Silva Ana Flávia Moura Marcelo Augusto Duarte Silveira JoséA Moura-Neto 2022World Journal of Virology2022,11,5:2
20Development of an inflatable solar dryer for improved postharvest handling of paddy rice in humid climates显示文摘Rice is the staple food for more than three billion people worldwide.Although considerable progress has been made with respect to improved breeds and production practices,losses during postharvest handling remain considerable.Drying and storage of paddy are two key stages where management can be improved.For rice,grain moisture content of 14%prevents microbiological activity,while a level of about 12%minimizes quality losses over prolonged storage periods.Due to the need for simple and economical technologies,an inflatable solar dryer(ISD)was developed based on adaptations of the Hohenheim-type solar tunnel dryer.To form a drying tunnel,transparent polyethylene(PE)film attaches by zipper to a reinforced black polyvinyl chloride(PVC)film.To reduce heat loss,a flexible multilayer floor was used along the drying area.The tunnel does not need a substructure as it is stabilized adequately from pressure created by two axial flow ventilators.During experiments,paddy was spread on the floor and mixed with a special roller bar.The ISD has been evaluated for paddy in the Philippines during both rainy and dry seasons and was subsequently optimized.Sun drying and shade drying were carried out in parallel for comparison and product was evaluated for moisture content and quality in terms of milling recovery and head rice yield.Moisture content was reduced from 23%to 14%within 26-52 h of continuous operation during the rainy season and 16%to 14%within 4-26 h of drying during the dry season.In both seasons,the final moisture content of 12%was reached after prolonged drying periods.Quality was not found to be affected with respect to drying treatment.The ISD showed advantages over sun drying,despite longer drying periods.Ana Salvatierra-Rojas Marcus Nagle Martin Gummert Tom de Bruin Joachim Müller 2017International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2017,10,3:2
