| 1 | Impacts of Four Types of ENSO Events on Tropical Cyclones Making Landfall over China's Mainland Based on Three Best-track Datasets显示文摘Impacts of El Nin o Modoki(ENM), La Nin a Modoki(LNM), canonical El Nin o(CEN) and canonical La Nin a(CLN) on tropical cyclones(TCs) that made landfall over China's Mainland during 1951–2011 are analysed using best-track data from China, the USA and Japan. Relative to cold phase years(LNM and CLN), landfalling TCs in warm years(ENM and CEN) have a farther east genesis location, as well as longer track lengths and durations, both in total and before landfall. ENM demonstrates the highest landfall frequency, most northerly mean landfall position, and shortest after-landfall sustainability(track length and duration), which indicate a more frequent and extensive coverage of China's Mainland by TCs, but with shorter after-landfall influence. CEN has low landfall frequency and the most southerly mean landfall location. LNM has the most westerly genesis location, being significantly farther west than the 1951–2011 average and leading to short mean track lengths and durations both in total or before landfall, all of which are significantly shorter than the 1951–2011 average. Variations in the low-level wind anomaly, vertical wind shear, mid-level relative humidity, steering flow, the monsoon trough and the western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH) can to some extent account for the features of frequency, location, track length and duration of landfalling TCs. | 2 | Investigating different bio-responses of the upper ocean to Typhoon Haitang using Argo and satellite data显示文摘The responses of the upper ocean to Typhoon Haitang in July 2005 are investigated using Argo float and multiplatform satellite data.The results show decreasing sea surface temperature(SST),a deepening of the mixed layer depth(MLD),and enhanced Chlorophyll-a(Chl-a)concentration.Two extreme cool regions are identified.While the magnitude of SST cooling in the two regions is similar,the biological response(Chla enhancement)differs.To facilitate comparisons,the region to the northeast of Taiwan is defined as region A and the region east of Taiwan as region B.Ekman pumping and the intrusion of the Kuroshio play an important role in the enhancement of Chl-a in region A.Cold eddies provide the material source for the formation of the cold center in region B,where mixing is dominant.Because of the relatively high translation speed(5 m/s)in region B,Ekman pumping has little influence on the cooling and Chl-a enhancement processes.Moreover,the MLD is shallower than the nutricline,which means that mixing does not result in a marked increase in nutrients in the euphotic layer(where the nutrient concentration is uniformly depleted).Sea temperatures,in contrast,gradually decrease with depth below the bottom of the mixed layer.In contrast to region A,region B showed no significant enhancement of Chl-a but strong SST cooling. | Haixia Shan Yuping Guan Jianping Huang | 2014 | Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,8: | 6 |
| 3 | Three-dimensional properties of mesoscale cyclonic warm-core and anticyclonic cold-core eddies in the South China Sea显示文摘In general,a mesoscale cyclonic(anticyclonic)eddy has a colder(warmer)core,and it is considered as a cold(warm)eddy.However,recently research found that there are a number of'abnormal'mesoscale cyclonic(anticyclonic)eddies associated with warm(cold)cores in the South China Sea(SCS).These'abnormal'eddies pose a challenge to previous works on eddy detection,characteristic analysis,eddy-induced heat and salt transports,and even on mesoscale eddy dynamics.Based on a 9-year(2000–2008)numerical modelling data,the cyclonic warm-core eddies(CWEs)and anticyclonic cold-core eddies(ACEs)in the SCS are analyzed.This study found that the highest incidence area of the'abnormal'eddies is the northwest of Luzon Strait.In terms of the eddy snapshot counting method,8620 CWEs and 9879 ACEs are detected,accounting for 14.6%and 15.8%of the total eddy number,respectively.The size of the'abnormal'eddies is usually smaller than that of the'normal'eddies,with the radius only around 50 km.In the generation time aspect,they usually appear within the 0.1–0.3 interval in the normalized eddy lifespan.The survival time of CWEs(ACEs)occupies 16.3%(17.1%)of the total eddy lifespan.Based on two case studies,the intrusion of Kuroshio warm water is considered as a key mechanism for the generation of these'abnormal'eddies near the northeastern SCS. | Wenjin Sun Yu Liu Gengxin Chen Wei Tan Xiayan Lin Yuping Guan Changming Dong | 2021 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2021,40,10: | 3 |
| 4 | Interbasin exchanges and their roles in global ocean circulation:A study based on 1 400 years' spin up of MOM4p1显示文摘A global prognostic model based on MOM4p1,which is a primitive equation nonBoussinesq numerical model,has been integrated with 1 400 years from the state of rest based on the realistic topography to study the long-term pattern of combined wind-driven and thermodynamically-driven general circulation.The model is driven by monthly climatological mean forces and includes 192×189 horizontal grids and31 pressure-based vertical levels.The main objective is to investigate the mass and heat transports at interbasin passages and their compensations and roles in the global ocean circulation under equilibrium state of long-term spin up.The kinetic energy analysis divides the spin up process into three stages:the quasi-stable state of wind driven current,the growing phase of thermodynamical circulation and the equilibrium state of thermohaline circulation.It is essential to spin up over a thousand years in order to reach the thermohaline equilibrium state from a state of rest.The Arctic Throughflow from the Bering Strait to the Greenland Sea and the Indonesian Throughflow(ITF)are captured and examined with their compensations and existing data.Analysis reveals that the slope structures of sea surface height are the dynamical driving mechanism of the Pacific-Arctic-Atlantic throughflow and ITF.The analysis denotes,in spite of O(1.4×106m3/s)of the southward volume transport in the northern Atlantic,that there is still O(1 PW)of heat transported northward since the northward currents in the upper layer carry much higher temperature water than the southward flowing northern Atlantic deep water(NADW).Meridional volume and heat transports are focused on the contributions to NADW renewals and Atlantic meridional overturning circulation(AMOC).Quantitative descriptions of the interbasin exchanges are explained by meridional compensations and supported by previous observations and numerical modeling results.Analysis indicates that the volume and heat exchanges on the interbasin passages proposed in this article manifest their hub roles in the Great Ocean Conveyor System. | ZHU Yaohua WEI Zexun FANG Guohong WANG Yonggang GUAN Yuping | 2014 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2014,33,1: | 2 |
