| 1 | Rattle-Type Silica Colloidal Particles Prepared by a Surface- Protected Etching Process显示文摘This paper explores the capability of the“surface-protected etching”process for the creation of rattle-type SiO_(2)@void@SiO_(2) colloidal structures featuring a mesoporous silica shell and a mesoporous movable silica core.The surface-protected etching process involves stabilization of the particle surface using a polymer ligand,and then selective etching of the interior to form hollow structures.In this paper,this strategy has been extended to the formation of rattle-like structures by etching SiO_(2)@SiO_(2) core shell particles which are synthesized by a two-step sol gel process.The key is to introduce a protecting polymer of polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP)to the surface of both core and shell in order to tailor their relative stability against chemical etching.Upon reacting with NaOH,the outer layer silica becomes a hollow shell as only the surface layer is protected by PVP and the interior is removed,while the core remains its original size thanks to the protection of PVP on its surface.This process can be carried out at room temperature without the need of additional templates or complicated heterogeneous coating procedures.The etching process also results in the rattle-type colloids having mesoscale pores with two distinct average sizes.In our demonstration of a model drug delivery process,such mesoporous structures show an interesting two-step elution profile which is believed to be related to the unique porous rattle structures. | Qiao Zhang Jianping Ge James Goebl Yongxing Hu Zhenda Lu Yadong Yin | 2009 | Nano Research2009,2,7: | 18 |

| 3 | Ductility demands on buckling-restrained braced frames under earthquake loading显示文摘Accurate estimates of ductility demands on buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBFs) are crucial to performance-based design of BRBFs. An analytical study on the seismic behavior of BRBFs has been conducted at the ATLSS Center, Lehigh University to prepare for an upcoming experimental program. The analysis program DRAIN-2DX was used to model a one-bay, four-story prototype BRBF including material and geometric nonlinearities. The bucklingrestrained brace (BRB) model incorporates both isotropic and kinematic hardening. Nonlinear static pushover and timehistory analyses were performed on the prototype BRBF. Performance objectives for the BRBs were defined and uscd to evaluate thc time-history analysis results. Particular emphasis was placed on global ductility demands and ductility demands oa the BRBs. These demands were compared with anticipated ductility capacities. The analysis results, along with results from similar previous studics, are used to evaluate the BRBF design provisions that have been recommended for codification in the United States. Thc results show that BRB maximum ductility demands can be as high as 20 to 25. These demands significantly exceed those anticipated by the BRBF recommended provisions. Results from the static pushover and timehistory analyses are used to demonstrate why the ductility demands exceed those anticipated by the recommended provisions.The BRB qualification testing protocol contained in the BRBF recommended provisions is shown to be inadequate because it requires only a maximum ductility demand of at most 7.5. | 5 | Effect of wall rougheners on cross-sectional flow characteristics for non-spherical particles in a horizontal rotating cylinder显示文摘Discrete-element-method(DEM) simulations have been performed to investigate the cross-sectional flow of non-spherical particles in horizontal rotating cylinders with and without wall rougheners. The nonspherical particles were modeled using the three-dimensional super-quadric equation. The influence of wall rougheners on flow behavior of grains was studied for increasing particle blockiness. Moreover,for approximately cubic particles(squareness parameters [555]), the rotational speed, gravitational acceleration and particle size were altered to investigate the effect of wall rougheners under a range of operating conditions. For spherical and near-spherical particles(approximately up to the squareness parameters [344]), wall rougheners are necessary to prevent slippage of the bed against the cylinder wall. For highly cubic particle geometries(squareness parameters larger than [344]), wall rougheners resulted in a counter-intuitive decrease in the angle of repose of the bed. In addition, wall rougheners employed in this study were demonstrated to have a higher impact on bed dynamics at higher rotational speeds and lower gravitational accelerations. | 7 | Optical conductivity-based ultrasensitive mid-infrared biosensing on a hybrid metasurface显示文摘Optical devices are highly attractive for biosensing as they can not only enable quantitative measurements of analytes but also provide information on molecular structures.Unfortunately,typical refractive index-based optical sensors do not have sufficient sensitivity to probe the binding of low-molecular-weight analytes.Non-optical devices such as field-effect transistors can be more sensitive but do not offer some of the significant features of optical devices,particularly molecular fingerprinting.We present optical conductivity-based mid-infrared(mid-IR)biosensors that allow for sensitive and quantitative measurements of low-molecular-weight analytes as well as the enhancement of spectral fingerprints.The sensors employ a hybrid metasurface consisting of monolayer graphene and metallic nano-antennas and combine individual advantages of plasmonic,electronic and spectroscopic approaches.First,the hybrid metasurface sensors can optically detect target molecule-induced carrier doping to graphene,allowing highly sensitive detection of low-molecular-weight analytes despite their small sizes.Second,the resonance shifts caused by changes in graphene optical conductivity is a well-defined function of graphene carrier density,thereby allowing for quantification of the binding of molecules.Third,the sensor performance is highly stable and consistent thanks to its insensitivity to graphene carrier mobility degradation.Finally,the sensors can also act as substrates for surfaceenhanced infrared spectroscopy.We demonstrated the measurement of monolayers of sub-nanometer-sized molecules or particles and affinity binding-based quantitative detection of glucose down to 200 pM(36 pg/mL).We also demonstrated enhanced fingerprinting of minute quantities of glucose and polymer molecules. | Yibo Zhu Zhaoyi Li Zhuang Hao Christopher DiMarco Panita Maturavongsadit Yufeng Hao Ming Lu Aaron Stein Qian Wang James Hone Nanfang Yu Qiao Lin | 2018 | Light(Science & Applications)2018,7,1: | 6 |
| 8 | Depositional Model for Peat Swamp and Coal Facies Evolution Using Sedimentology, Coal Macerals, Geochemistry and Sequence Stratigraphy显示文摘As one of the most important source rocks and reservoirs of unconventional natural gas, the sedimentary environment and mode of peat swamp(the predecessor of coal seam) is important to the coal seam's spatial distribution, material composition, hydrocarbon generation potential, reservoir physical properties, etc. To reveal the depositional characteristics and history of environmental change in a terrestrial basin during a period of peat accumulation, the Middle Jurassic aged #7 coal from Gaoquan in the Qaidam Basin(NW China) was investigated using sedimentology, maceral composition, geochemistry and sequence stratigraphy. Based on identification of the sedimentary shoreline break belt, wave energy depletion point and position of wave base, the peat swamp system can be subdivided into(1) lakeside plain,(2) low energy lakeshore,(3) high energy lakeshore, and(4) shallow lake subfacies. A new method for determining coal facies is proposed based on the combination of environmental parameters including oxidation-reduction levels, energy conditions and the influence of terrigneous sediments. The evolution of the coal seam shows that peat was deposited mainly in the low energy lakeshore and lakeside plain subfacies. Five types of sequence stratigrpahic surface and two types of parasequence were identified. Forced lake regressions and normal lake regressions are attributed as the causes of sequence boundaries. The sequence stratigraphic framework comprises six sequences and corresponding system tracts, and the curve of base-level for each demonstrates a characteristic initial period of slow rising followed by fast rising and then returning to slow rising. A model indicating the relationship among base-level changes, coal facies evolution, and the environmental features in the swamp is proposed that shows the environmental features of the swamp were controlled by both base-level changes and coal facies. In this review paper, we discussed the physics of radiopacity and X-ray/CT, clinically used contrast agents,and the recent progress in the development of radiopaque imaging agents and devices for the diagnosis and treatment of CVDs. We focused on radiopaque imaging agents for atherosclerosis, radiopaque embolic agents and drug eluting beads, and other radiopaque medical devices related to catheterization procedures to treat CVDs. | 12 | Characteristics of Rat Lumbar Vertebral Body Bone Mineral Density and Differential Segmental Responses to Sex Hormone Deficiency:a Clinical Multidetector Computed Tomography Study显示文摘Objective To investigate sex hormone deficiency related osteoporosis and efficacy of different therapies. Methods Orchiectomized and ovariectomized rat models are used to investigate sex hormone deficiency related osteoporosis and efficacy of different therapies. A rat vertebral body can be longitudinally divided into central portion, which contain more trabecular bone, and para-endplate portions which contain more compact bone. In matured male and female Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rat lumbar spines, we investigated baseline bone mineral density (BMD) characteristics and the differential segmental responses in bone loss within the lumbar vertebral body post gonadal surgery with clinical multidetector computed tomography. Results Para-endplate sections had a higher BMD than central sections. The cephalad para-endplate sections had a higher BMD than the caudad para-endplate sections. Eight weeks after gonadal removal, there was more bone loss in central sections than para-endplate sections. The relative difference of bone loss between para-endplate and central sections was more apparent in male rats than in female rats. There was more bone loss in caudad sections than cephalad sections; this lead to a further increase of BMD difference between caudad para-endplate sections and cephalad para-endplate sections post gonadal surgery. | 13 | An optimized protocol for stepwise optimization of real-time RT-PCR analysis显示文摘Computational tool-assisted primer design for real-time reverse transcription(RT)PCR(qPCR)analysis largely ignores the sequence similarities between sequences of homologous genes in a plant genome.It can lead to false confidence in the quality of the designed primers,which sometimes results in skipping the optimization steps for qPCR.However,the optimization of qPCR parameters plays an essential role in the efficiency,specificity,and sensitivity of each gene’s primers.Here,we proposed an optimized approach to sequentially optimizing primer sequences,annealing temperatures,primer concentrations,and cDNA concentration range for each reference(and target)gene.Our approach started with a sequence-specific primer design that should be based on the single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)present in all the homologous sequences for each of the reference(and target)genes under study.By combining the efficiency calibrated and standard curve methods with the 2−ΔΔCt method,the standard cDNA concentration curve with a logarithmic scale was obtained for each primer pair for each gene.As a result,an R 2≥0.9999 and the efficiency(E)=100±5% should be achieved for the best primer pair of each gene,which serve as the prerequisite for using the 2^(−ΔΔCt) method for data analysis.We applied our newly developed approach to identify the best reference genes in different tissues and at various inflorescence developmental stages of Tripidium ravennae,an ornamental and biomass grass,and validated their utility under varying abiotic stress conditions.We also applied this approach to test the expression stability of six reference genes in soybean under biotic stress treatment with Xanthomonas axonopodis pv.glycines(Xag).Thus,these case studies demonstrated the effectiveness of our optimized protocol for qPCR analysis. | Fangzhou Zhao Nathan A.Maren Pawel Z.Kosentka Ying-Yu Liao Hongyan Lu James R.Duduit Debao Huang Hamid Ashrafi Tuanjie Zhao Alejandra I.Huerta Thomas G.Ranney Wusheng Liu | 2021 | Horticulture Research2021,8,1: | 2 |

| 16 | Recurrent abdominal liposarcoma: Analysis of 19 cases and prognostic factors显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the clinical outcome of re-operation for recurrent abdominal liposarcoma following multidis-ciplinary team cooperation. METHODS: Nineteen consecutive patients who had re-current abdominal liposarcoma underwent re-operation by the retroperitoneal sarcoma team at our institution from May 2009 to January 2012. Patient demographic and clinical data were reviewed retrospectively. Multidisciplinary team discussions were held prior to treatment, and re-operation was deemed the best treatment. The categories of the extent of resection were as follows: gross total resection (GTR), palliative resection and partial resection. Surgical techniques were divided into discrete lesion resection and combined contiguous multivisceral resection (CMR). Tumor size was determined as the largest diameter of the specimen. Patients were followed up at approximately 3-monthly intervals. For survival analysis, a univariate analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method, and a multivariate analysis was performed using the Cox pro-portional hazards model. RESULTS: Nineteen patients with recurrent abdominal liposarcoma (RAL) underwent 32 re-operations at our institute. A total of 51 operations were reviewed with a total follow-up time ranging from 4 to 120 (47.4 ± 34.2) mo. The GTR rate in the CMR group was higher than that in the non-CMR group (P = 0.034). CMR was positively correlated with intra-operative bleeding (correlation coefficient = 0.514, P = 0.010). Six cases with severe postoperative complications were recorded. Patients with tumor sizes greater than 20 cm carried a significant risk of profuse intra-operative bleeding (P = 0.009). The ratio of a highly malignant subtype (de-differentiated or pleomorphic) in recurrent cases was higher compared to primary cases (P = 0.027). Both single-factor survival using the Kaplan-Meier model and multivariate analysis using the Cox proportional hazards model showed that overall survival was corre-lated with resection extent and pathological subtype (P < 0.001 and P = 0.02), however, relapse-free interval (RFI) was only correlated with resection extent (P = 0.002). CONCLUSION: Close follow-up should be conducted in patients with RAL.
