1Humid Medieval Warm Period recorded by magnetic characteristics of sediments from Gonghai Lake, Shanxi, North China显示文摘Variations in monsoon strength, moisture or precipitation in eastern China during the MWP reflected by different climatic records have shown apparent discrepancies. Here, detailed environmental magnetic investigations and mineralogical analyses were conducted on lacustrine sediments of Core GH09B1 (2.8 m long) from Gonghai Lake, Shanxi, North China, concerning the monsoon history during the MWP. The results demonstrate that the main magnetic mineral is magnetite. The sediments with relatively high magnetic mineral concentrations were characterized by relatively fine magnetic grain sizes, which were formed in a period of relatively strong pedogenesis and high precipitation. In contrast, the sediments with low magnetic mineral concentrations reflected an opposite process. The variations of magnetic parameters in Gonghai Lake sediments were mainly controlled by the degree of pedogenesis in the lake drainage basin, which further indicated the strength of the Asian summer monsoon. The variations in the and S 300 parameters of the core clearly reveal the Asian summer monsoon history over the last 1200 years in the study area, suggesting generally abundant precipitation and a strong summer monsoon during the Medieval Warm Period (MWP, AD 910–1220), which is supported by pollen evidence. Furthermore, this 3–6-year resolution environmental magnetic record indicates a dry event around AD 980–1050, interrupting the generally humid MWP. The summer monsoon evolution over the last millennium recorded by magnetic parameters in sediments from Gonghai Lake correlates well with historical documentation (North China) and speleothem oxygen isotopes (Wanxiang Cave), as well as precipitation modeling results (extratropical East Asia), which all indicate a generally humid MWP within which centennial-scale moisture variability existed. 2On the timing of the East Asian summer monsoon maximum during the Holocene Does the speleothem oxygen isotope record reflect monsoon rainfall variability?显示文摘The evolution of the East Asian summer monsoon(EASM) during the Holocene has long been of significant interest.Knowledge of past EASM variability not only increases our understanding of monsoon dynamics on a long timescale,but it also provides an environmental and climatic background for research into Chinese cultural development.However,the timing of the EASM maximum remains controversial.The popular concept of an 'early Holocene maximum' is mainly based on speleothemδ^(18)O(δ^(18)O_c) records from caves in southern China;however,the interpretation of δ^(18)O_C as a reliable proxy for EASM intensity is being increasingly challenged.The present paper is a critical review of the climatic significance of the δ^(18)O_C record from China.Firstly,we suggest that precipitation in northern China is an appropriate index of EASM intensity,the variation of which clearly indicates a mid-Holocene monsoon maximum.Secondly,an interregional comparison demonstrates that the precipitation record in northern China is quite different from that in southern China on a range of timescales,and is inconsistent with the spatial similarity exhibited by speleothem oxygen isotope records.Furthermore,both modeling and observational data show that the δ^(18)O_C records from southern China indeed reflect changes in precipitation δ^(18)O(δ^(18)O_P) rather than precipitation amount,and therefore that their use as an EASM proxy is inappropriate.Finally,we address several significant monsoon-related issues-including the driving mechanism of the EASM on an orbital timescale,the climatic significance of speleothem oxygen isotopes,and the relationship between atmospheric circulation and precipitation in monsoonal regions.CHEN JianHui RAO ZhiGuo LIU JianBao HUANG Wei FENG Song DONG GuangHui HU Yu XU QingHai CHEN FaHu 2016Science China(Information Sciences)2016,59,12:18
3Sedimentary and OSL dating evidence for the development of the present Hobq desert landscape, northern China显示文摘The sedimentary sequence and landscape of the Hobq desert was observed through twelve profiles along five N-S sections extending through the entire desert.Aeolian sands were found to overlie the alluvial,diluvial,and lacustrine sediments in this desert.Optically stimulated luminescence(OSL)dating results were obtained from post-IR OSL signals of quartz fractions of sand samples at the bottom of sand dunes and hills by using the Double-SAR protocol.The OSL ages reveal that the latest sand accumulation began around 19 ka in the northwestern part and 9 ka in the eastern part of the Hobq Desert.Around 7 ka,the sand accumulation was strengthened and extended southward and northward 2 ka to develop the present desert landscape.Our study suggests that the aeolian sand accumulation around 19,9 and 7 ka resulted from the weakening of the Asian summer monsoon over this region.However,the rapid development of the present Hobq desert landscape since 2 ka was likely triggered by human activities in this desert.FAN YuXin CHEN XiaoLong FAN TianLai JIN Ming LIU JianBao CHEN FaHu 2013Science China Earth Sciences2013,56,12:11
4Major advances in studies of the physical geography and living environment of China during the past 70 years and future prospects显示文摘The natural environment provides material essentials for human survival and development. The characteristics,processes, regional differentiation and forcing mechanisms of the elements of the natural environment(e.g. geomorphology,climate, hydrology, soil, etc.) are the main objects of research in physical geography. China has a complex natural environment and huge regional differentiation and therefore it provides outstanding reserach opportunities in physical geography. This review summarizes the most important developments and the main contributions of research in the physical geography and human living environment in China during the past 70 years. The major topics addressed are the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and the evolution of its cryosphere, the development of fluvial systems, the acidification of the vast arid region of the Asian interior, variations in the monsoon and westerly climate systems on multiple timescales, the development of lakes and wetlands, the watershed system model, soil erosion, past human-environment interactions, biogeography, and physical geographic zonality. After briefly introducing international research developments, we review the history of research in physical geography in China, focusing on the major achievements and major academic debates, and finally we summarize the status of current research and the future prospects. 5A novel procedure for pollen-based quantitative paleoclimate reconstructions and its application in China显示文摘Traditionally, the evaluation of pollen-based quantitative paleoclimate reconstructions focuses on the ability of calibration sets to infer present climatic conditions and/or the similarity between fossil and modern assemblages. Objective criteria for choosing the most appropriate climate parameter(s) to be reconstructed at a specific site are thus lacking. Using a novel approach for testing the statistical significance of a quantitative reconstruction using random environmental data, in combination with the advantageous large environmental gradients, abundant vegetation types and comprehensive modern pollen databases in China, we describe a new procedure for pollen-based quantitative paleoclimatic reconstructions. First, the most significant environmental variable controlling the fossil pollen assemblage changes is identified. Second, a calibration set to infer changes in this targeted variable is built up, by limiting the modern ranges of other environmental variables. Finally, the pollen-based quantitative reconstruction is obtained and its statistical significance assessed. This novel procedure was used to reconstruct the mean annual precipitation(Pann) from Gonghai Lake in the Lvliang Mountains, and Tianchi Lake in the Liupan Mountains, on the eastern and western fringe of the Chinese Loess Plateau, respectively. Both Pann reconstructions are statistically significant(p<0.001), and a sound and stable correlation relationship exists in their common period, showing a rapid precipitation decrease since 3300 cal yr BP. 8Efficient alloy design of Sr-modified A356 alloys driven by computational thermodynamics and machine learning显示文摘A356 alloys are widely used in industries due to their excellent comprehensive performance.Sr is usually added in A356 alloys to improve their mechanical properties.There have been various experimental reports on the optimal additional amount of Sr in A356 alloys,but their results are inevitably inconsistent.In this paper,a combination of computational thermodynamic and machine learning approaches was employed to determine the optimal Sr content in A356 alloys with the best mechanical properties.First,a self-consistent thermodynamic database of quaternary Al-Si-Mg-Sr system was established by means of the Calculation of PHAse Diagram technique supported by key experiments.Second,the fractions for solidified phase/structures of A356-xSr alloys predicted by Scheil simulation,together with the measured mechanical properties were set as the input dataset in the machine learning model to train the relation of“composition-microstructure-properties”.The optimal addition of Sr in A356 alloy was designed as 0.005 wt.%and validated by key experiments.Furthermore,such a combinatorial approach can help to understand the strengthening/toughening mechanisms of Sr-modified A356 alloys.It is also anticipated that the present approach may provide a feasible means for efficient and accurate design of various casting alloys and understanding the alloy strengthening/toughening mechanisms.Wang Yi Guangchen Liu Zhao Lu Jianbao Gao Lijun Zhang 2022Journal of Materials Science & Technology2022,,17:3

12Irradiation effects of H/He neutral beam on different forged tungsten materials显示文摘Tungsten has been considered as the most promising plasma-facing materials(PFMs)for the future fusion reactor due to its excellent chemical and physical properties.In this work,different kinds of tungsten-based PFMs including pure W,W-K,and W-Y_(2)O_(3)alloys were prepared via powder metallurgy.Then,high-energy rate forging was used for the plastic deformation to refine the grain size of the samples and increase their densities.To evaluate the service performance of these tungsten-based PFMs under edge plasma conditions,the deformed samples were exposed to high-energy hydrogen(H)neutral beam doped with 6 at%helium(He).Sequentially,edge-localized mode-like transient loadings(1 ms,100 cycles)were carried out on the specimens with neutral beam pre-loading to study the impact of H/He pre-loading on the generation and propaga-tion of cracks.The microstructural changes of the exposed surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy with the help of focused ion beam.The experimental results indicate that H/He neutral beam irradiation could induce obvious surface damages of the tested samples.For example,pinhole and coral-like nanostructures were formed on the surfaces of the exposed samples,as the surface temperatures were relatively high.The cracking thresholds of the W-Y_(2)O_(3)samples with and without neutral beam pre-irradiations were both between 0.22 and 0.33 GW m^(−2),while the cracking thresholds of pure W and W-K samples were less than 0.22 GW m^(−2).This result indicates that the H/He neutral beam pre-loading has no significant impact on the cracking threshold.In addition,the crack pattern on the surface of the exposed samples closely depends on the grain boundary pattern.Fan Feng Youyun Lian Jianbao Wang Zhe Chen Xiang Liu Jun Tang Bo Huang 2019Tungsten2019,1,2:1

14Influential factors on the repose angle of desert sands显示文摘The repose angle is one of the most significant macroscopic parameters in describing the behavior of granular materials.Under a static condition,the repose angle is the steepest angle at which sediment particles can rest without motion.In this paper,we use existing data and aeolian physics to analyze the main factors that influence the repose angle of sand dunes,and we investigate dif-ferent repose angles involving various states and types of materials.We have determined that different factors have differential in-fluence on the magnitude of the repose angle.Our results show that for powdery(<400-μm diameter) desert sands,the main in-fluential factor on the magnitude of repose angle is the molecular force among particles.Particle size does not influence the repose angle of desert sands directly,but has an indirect impact by affecting the grit sphericity and surface roughness,of which the grit sphericity acts as a major factor.Even at the same average particle size,the repose angle differs with different grain compositions.Furthermore,with increasing unevenness in grain composition,the repose angle increases correspondingly.Sand texture also has a direct influence on the repose angle of desert sands.In two sand samples having the same grain composition but different textures,the repose angles may be different.Water content has a stronger influence on the repose angle than any other factor.However,the relationship between the repose angle and water content is not a simple direct proportion.In fact,with increasing water content,the repose angle first increases and then decreases.These research results will be useful for understanding the mechanisms of dune transport,variations of dune morphology,and the stability and fluidity of dune sands.JianBao Liu NaiAng Wang HongYi Cheng WenTao Yang 2011Research in Cold and Arid Regions2011,3,1:0
15The effect of dispersion of TiO_2 nanoparticles on preparation of flexible dye-sensitized photoanodes显示文摘Generally, nanoparticles are easy to aggregate due to their nano sizes, which influence the physical and chemical properties. In this work, a dispersion treatment of the TiO2 nanoparticles with different average sizes was employed to improve the dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles, in order to prepare flexible photoanodes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) with novel photovoltaic properties at a low temperature. The effects of dispersion treatment on the dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles, including the viscosities of the binder-free TiO2 paste, the morphologies and textural properties of nanoparticle-TiO2 films, and the photovoltaic properties of the flexible DSCs, were investigated. Flexible indium-tin oxide (ITO)-coated polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrates with sputter deposited Pt were employed as the transparent flexible counter electrodes. A short-circuit photocurrent density of 9.62 mA·cm 2, an open-circuit voltage of 0.757 V, a fill factor of 0.589 and an overall light-to-energy conversion efficiency of 4.29% for the flexible DSCs under AM1.5 illumination of 100 mW cm 2 were obtained with dispersion treatment. 17Dust storms in northern China and their significance for the concept of the Anthropocene显示文摘A key scientific issue in the study of the Anthropocene is the determination of the corresponding stratigraphic marker in geological archives.The arid and semi-arid regions of Asia are the second largest dust source on Earth,and their release,transport and deposition of dust affect global climate change,as well as marine and terrestrial biogeochemical cycles.Over the past~2000 years,human activity has outpaced natural climatic variability as the dominant control of dust storms in northern China.Thus,exploring the potential of anthropogenic Asian dust as a marker of the Anthropocene and its impacts on lake ecosystems may contribute to an improved definition of the characteristics and timing of the Anthropocene.In this context,we measured spectrally-inferred chlorophyll a from the sediments of an undisturbed alpine lake in northern China,and compared the results with dust storm data from the same cores and with regional climatic records.Asian dust is a widely distributed,globally significant signal of human activity,and it is also well preserved in various geological archives;hence,we propose anthropogenic dust can be considered as a potential marker of the Anthropocene.Anthropogenic dust signals in stratigraphic records during the past~2000 years differ substantially from those during the early and middle Holocene,which demonstrates that,at least since~2000 years ago,human activity has exceeded the natural forcing of dust transport in northern China.We therefore propose that there are spatial and temporal differences in the onset of the Anthropocene,as defined by anthropogenic dust deposition,which is therefore time-transgressive.Our spectrally-inferred chlorophyll a record is consistent with dust storm activity over the past~2000 years(except since the 1950s),suggesting that anthropogenic dust storms were the dominant control on lake primary production.Prior to the 1950s the interactions of the East Asian summer monsoon(EASM),human activity,dust storms and lake ecosystems resulted in a shift from a pattern in which“human activity outpaced the EASM as the dominant control on the Earth surface system”to one in which,after the 1950s,“human activity became the dominant factor influencing the EASM and the Earth surface system”.In the future this pattern may trend towards one in which there is the“sustainable development of humans and the environment”.We suggest that,in order to better understand the interactions of human activity,climate and environment,future research on the Anthropocene should focus on its time-transgressive characteristics and regional differences,in addition to the“Great Acceleration”Jianbao LIU Jie CHEN Shengqian CHEN Xinwei YAN Haoran DONG Fahu CHEN 2022Science China Earth Sciences2022,65,5:0

19Biomimetic Preparation of Alumina Hierarchical Papillary Microrough Structure for Hydrophobic Improvement and Its Abrasion Resistance Finite Element Analysis显示文摘The surface of lotus leaves has a hierarchical micro–nano-rough structure.We determined that the papillary structure also possesses hierarchical features on the microscale.We used alumina particles as rough structure building units to construct a Hierarchical Papillary microrough Structure(HPS)on a ceramic surface.The effects of the spatial distribution of HPS on the abrasion resistance and mechanical stability of hydrophobic coatings were investigated.Furthermore,for each HPS,the falling sand abrasion process was analyzed using finite element fluid mechanics analysis.A denser or more two-dimensional HPS implied that more area was impacted by the falling sand and that the abrasion amount and rate were higher.This is contrary to the common belief that when there are more wear-resistant substances on the surface,the abrasion resistance is better;thus,abrasion resistance does not necessarily depend entirely on the concentration of wear-resistant substances on the surface,but it is also influenced by the abrasion mode and the spatial distribution structure of the wear-resistant substances.The 3D stacked HPS(3D-HPS)with excellent abrasion resistance and rich pore structure considerably enhanced the mechanical stability of the hydrophobic coatings.These findings provide novel insights and a theoretical basis for designing spatial structures on high abrasion-resistant superhydrophobic ceramic surfaces.Meng Liu Junxin Lu Zhihui Cao Kang Yang Tingting Mi Jianlin Li Jianbao Li Hui Yu 2023Journal of Bionic Engineering2023,20,5:0
20Revealing the phase-transformation path in a FeCoNiSnx eutectic high entropy alloy system by crystallographic orientation relationships显示文摘High entropy alloys are the focus of current research.An accurate description of their phase-transformation path,however,is a challenge when their phase constituent and transformation process are complex.In this study,a FeCoNiSn x eutectic high entropy alloy(EHEA)system was investigated and a novel FeCoNiSn EHEA composed of BCC+HCP phases was reported.The transition from the hypoeutectic to the fully eutectic and then to the hypereutectic microstructure with the Sn addition was characterized by the electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD)technology,and the phase-transformation path was clari-fied by crystallographic orientation relationships.The studies reveal that the primary phase of FeCoNiSn x(x=0.2,0.4)is FCC structure,and a further Sn addition induces an obvious phase-transformation from FCC to BCC in both the primary phase and eutectic lamellar,which satisfies the Kurdjumov-Sachs(K-S)or Nishiyama-Wasserman(N-W)variant orientation relationship.The mechanical results confirm that the phase structure and microstructure transition caused by Sn addition do significantly improve the strength and hardness of FeCoNiSn x EHEAs,but have serious adverse effects on plasticity.This study would be of significance to understanding the phase-transformation process in HEAs and preparing the HEAs with aimed mechanical properties.Jianbao Zhang Dexu Cui Xin Li Yixuan He Haifeng Wang Weimin Liu 2023Journal of Materials Science & Technology2023,,25:0
