1Spontaneous Twist and Intrinsic Instabilities of Pristine Graphene Nanoribbons显示文摘In pristine graphene ribbons,disruption of the aromatic bond network results in depopulation of covalent orbitals and tends to elongate the edge,with an effective force of fe~2 eV/Å(larger for armchair edges than for zigzag edges,according to calculations).This force can have quite striking macroscopic manifestations in the case of narrow ribbons,as it favors their spontaneous twisting,resulting in the parallel edges forming a double helix,resembling DNA,with a pitchλt of about 1520 lattice parameters.Through atomistic simulations,we investigate how the torsionτ~1/λt decreases with the width of the ribbon,and observe its bifurcation:the twist of wider ribbons abruptly vanishes and instead the corrugation localizes near the edges.The length-scale(λe)of the emerging sinusoidal“frill”at the edge is fully determined by the intrinsic parameters of graphene,namely its bending stiffness D=1.5 eV and the edge force fe withλe~D/fe.Analysis reveals other warping configurations and suggests their sensitivity to the chemical passivation of the edges,leading to possible applications in sensors.Ksenia V.Bets Boris I.Yakobson 2009Nano Research2009,2,2:9
2Development of electric power cooperation in Northeast Asia显示文摘The development of interstate electric ties ISETs and grids(ISGs) is a global process; recently, countries of Northeast Asia(NEA) that were previously very poorly connected have started to study the possibility of constructing ISETs and ISGs. This paper describes the current state of the interstate transmissions in the NEA region, considering the prospective projects of ISETs in NEA. The results of the system optimization study on prospective NEA ISGs are provided. 3A Dilemma of Language: “Natural Disasters” in Academic Literature显示文摘For decades sections of the academic community have been emphasizing that disasters are not natural.Nevertheless, politicians, the media, various international organizations—and, more surprisingly, many established researchers working in disaster studies—are still widely using the expression 'natural disaster.' We systematically analyzed the usage of the expression 'natural disaster' by disaster studies researchers in 589 articles in six key academic journals representative of disaster studies research,and found that authors are using the expression in three principal ways:(1) delineating natural and human-induced hazards;(2) using the expression to leverage popularity;and(3) critiquing the expression 'natural disaster.' We also identified vulnerability themes that illustrate the context of 'natural disaster' usage. The implications of continuing to use this expression, while explicitly researching human vulnerability, are wide-ranging, and we explore what this means for us and our peers. 4Perovskite-transition metal dichalcogenides heterostructures: recent advances and future perspectives显示文摘Transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs)and perovskites are among the most attractive and widely investigated semiconductors in the recent decade.They are promising materials for various applications,such as photodetection,solar energy harvesting,light emission,and many others.Combining these materials to form heterostructures can enrich the already fascinating properties and bring up new phenomena and opportunities.Work in this field is growing rapidly in both fundamental studies and device applications.Here,we review the recent findings in the perovskite-TMD heterostructures and give our perspectives on the future development of this promising field.The fundamental properties of the perovskites,TMDs,and their heterostructures are discussed first,followed by a summary of the synthesis methods of the perovskites and TMDs and the approaches to obtain high-quality interfaces.Particular attention is paid to the TMD-perovskite heterostructures that have been applied in solar cells and photodetectors with notable performance improvement.Finally through our analysis,we propose an outline on further fundamental studies and the promising applications of perovskite-TMD heterostructures.Ahmed Elbanna Ksenia Chaykun Yulia Lekina Yuanda Liu Benny Febriansyah Shuzhou Li Jisheng Pan Ze Xiang Shen Jinghua Teng 2022Opto-Electronic Science2022,1,8:2

6Synthesis,Crystal Structure and Biological Activity of N-cyanosulfoximine Derivative Containing 1,2,3-Thiadiazole显示文摘The title compound N-cyanosulfoximine derivative containing 1,2,3-thiadiazole(C6H8N4OS2, Mr = 216.28) has been synthesized using 4-(chloromethyl)-5-methyl-1,2,3-thiadiazole as the starting material, and its structure was characterized by IR, 1H NMR, HRMS, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal of the title compound belongs to orthorhombic, space group Pna21 with a = 14.730(6), b = 5.478(2), c = 22.619(9) ?, Z = 8, V = 1825.0(13) ?3, Dc = 1.574 g/cm3, μ = 0.547 mm-1, F(000) = 896, R = 0.0767 and w R(I > 2σ(I)) = 0.2064. X-ray analysis indicates that in this crystal double enantiomers are found as the basically asymmetrical unit and interactions between S(1)···N(3), S(3)···N(4) and S(3)···N(7) are observed. This kind of interactions extends the molecules into a one-dimensional double chain. 7IR-transparent MgO-Gd_(2)O_(3) composite ceramics produced by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis and spark plasma sintering显示文摘A glycine–nitrate self-propagating high-temperature synthesis(SHS)was developed to produce composite MgO-Gd_(2)O_(3) nanopowders.The X-ray powder diffraction(XRD)analysis confirmed the SHS-product consists of cubic MgO and Gd_(2)O_(3) phases with nanometer crystallite size and retains this structure after annealing at temperatures up to 1200℃.Near full dense high IR-transparent composite ceramics were fabricated by spark plasma sintering(SPS)at 1140℃and 60 MPa.The in-line transmittance of 1 mm thick MgO-Gd_(2)O_(3) ceramics exceeded 70%in the range of 4–5 mm and reached a maximum of 77%at a wavelength of 5.3 mm.The measured microhardness HV0.5 of the MgO-Gd2O3 ceramics is 9.5±0.4 GPa,while the fracture toughness(KIC)amounted to 2.0±0.5МPa·m1/2.These characteristics demonstrate that obtained composite MgO-Gd_(2)O_(3) ceramic is a promising material for protective infra-red(IR)windows.Dmitry A.Permin Maksim S.Boldin Alexander V.Belyaev Stanislav S.Balabanov Vitaly A.Koshkin Atrem A.Murashov Igor V.Ladenkov Evgeny A.Lantsev Ksenia E.Smetanina Nadia M.Khamaletdinova 2021Journal of Advanced Ceramics2021,10,2:2

18Development of video otoscopy quiz using a smartphone adaptable otoscope显示文摘Background:Otoscopy examination can be challenging.Traditional teaching uses still image illustrations.Newer attempts use video samples to simulate the otoscopy exam which is a dynamic process.Aims/Objective:To assess whether recorded otoscopy videos from a smartphone adaptable otoscope can be used to develop a video-based otoscopy quiz which may be used for instructing and familiarizing participants to normal anatomy and pathologic ear conditions.To use this quiz to assess current pediatric residents’competency of common otoscopy diagnosis.Method and materials:This study was conducted in 2018.Video samples of ear pathology were collected at the Albany Medical Center using a smartphone adaptable otoscope-Cellscope.The videos were used to create a video otoscopy quiz(VOQ)without clinical vignettes.45 pediatric residents from 3 academic institutions were evaluated with the quiz.Results:The weighted mean for the VOQ was 66.90%(95%CI 58.89%-68.42%).The breakdown by questions are:myringosclerosis 72.88%,retraction pocket 80.65%,cholesteatoma 42.22%,hemotympanum 75.04%,tympanic membrane perforation 79.62%,cerumen impaction 95.46%,otitis externa 52.54%,otitis media with effusion 63.30%,acute otitis media 75.55%,normal ear 36.39%.Conclusion:We found that videos of otoscopy exams can be obtained with a smartphone adaptable otoscope and validated to develop a video-based quiz,which may be used to supplement otoscopic instruction.Following our testing process,we found pediatric residents are relatively well equipped to identify ear pathology on VOQ.Garrett Ni Stuart Curtis Adam Kaplon Neil Gildener-Leapman Jacob Brodsky Ksenia Aaron Jason Mouzakes 2021Journal of Otology2021,16,2:1
19Measuring Resilience in the Assumed City显示文摘The malleable nature of both the idea of a city and the idea of resilience raises an important question—why measure?Resilience is assumed to be located in the physical infrastructure of specific places or as a quality of the people located there.For disasters,we are often trying to conceptualize,measure,or render legible resilience in physical structures.But what is it that we are trying to measure,and is the idea of a city reflected in these measurements?If cities are organized around something other than resilience,is resilience their natural by-product?What is necessitating the need for increased—and measured—resilience?Using interpretive policy analysis,we explored five well known disaster resilience frameworks(UNDRR's Making Cities Resilient Campaign,UN-Habitat's City Resilience Profiling Programme,The World Bank and GFDRR's Resilient Cities Program,Arup and The Rockefeller Foundation's City Resilience Index,and The Rockefeller Foundation's 100 Resilient Cities)to identify the working definition of‘‘city''and of‘‘resilience.''We conclude that if the demand for cities to become more resilient is an acknowledgment of the risk produced by globalized urbanization,then the call itself is an indictment of the current state of our cities.Wesley Cheek Ksenia Chmutina 2022International Journal of Disaster Risk Science2022,13,3:1
20The seasonal dynamics of geochemical characteristics of sediments in the impact zone of the fish farm(Lake Ladoga,Russia)显示文摘This study focuses on the analysis of seasonal dynamics of physicochemical parameters(pH and Eh)and organic matter content in the sediments accumulated within the impact zone of the cage trout farm(Lake Ladoga,Russia).The Ladoga is the largest lake in Europe and there are more than 20 fish farms located in the northern part of the waterbody.The geochemical research is necessary for predicting the negative impact of the polluted sediments on both the cage fish and the aquatic ecosystem.The sampling was conducted during various seasons of the year(February,June,August,October)which were characterized by the different fish feeding regimes.The sediment cores were collected at 7 points,including the cage and reference sites(150 m and 600 m far from the farm).The results showed that the accumulation of organic material released from the studied fish farms was local and the wastes did not enter the sediments at the control sites.Furthermore,the accumulated organic layer can be compacted and partially mineralized during winter period.Nevertheless,strongly reducing conditions in sediments occur due to the accumulation of organic material and low rate of water exchange within the studied bay.Therefore,there is a potential risk of formation of toxic gases and release of accumulated nutrients and metals from sediments to water.It can have a negative impact on benthic and nekton organisms,in particular cage fish.Artem Lapenkov Alina Guzeva Ksenia Zaripova Zakhar Slukovskii 2023Aquaculture and Fisheries2023,8,6:1
