1Differing coping mechanisms, stress level and anorectal physiology in patients with functional constipation显示文摘AIM: To investigate coping mechanisms, constipation symptoms and anorectal physiology in 80 constipated subjects and 18 controls.METHODS: Constipation was diagnosed by Rome Ⅱ criteria.Coping ability and anxiety/depression were assessed by validated questionnaires. Transit time and balloon distension test were performed.RESULTS: 34.5% patients were classified as slow transit type of constipation. The total colonic transit time (56 h vs 10 h, P<0.0001) and rectal sensation including urge sensation (79 mL vs 63 mL, P = 0.019) and maximum tolerable volume (110 mL vs95 mL, P = 0.03) differed in patients and controls. Constipated subjects had significantly higher anxiety and depression scores and lower SF-36 scores in all categories. They also demonstrated higher scores of'monitoring' coping strategy (14+6 vs9+3, P = 0.001),which correlated with the rectal distension sensation (P = 0.005), urge sensation (P=0.002), and maximum tolerable volume (P = 0.035). 2Ten cities cross-sectional questionnaire survey of children asthma and other allergies in China显示文摘Asthma,rhinitis and eczema(allergic or non-allergic)have increased throughout the world during the last decades,especially among children.Changes in the indoor environment are suspected to be important causes.China has experienced a dramatic change in indoor environmental exposures during the past two decades.However,such changes and their associations with children’s asthma and other health aspects have not been thoroughly studied.China,Children,Homes,Health(CCHH),Phase I,was a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of 48219 children 1–8 years old in 10 Chinese cities during 2010–2012.The questionnaire includes the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood(ISAAC)core health questions and additional questions regarding housing,life habits and outdoor environment.In health analyses,children aged 3–6 years old were included.The prevalences of doctor diagnosed asthma varied from 1.7%to 9.8%(mean 6.8%),a large increase from 0.91%in 1999 and 1.50%in2000.The prevalence of wheeze,rhinitis and atopic eczema(last 12 months)varied from 13.9%to 23.7%,24.0%to 50.8%and4.8%to 15.8%,respectively.Taiyuan had the lowest prevalences of all illnesses and Shanghai the highest,except for wheezewhere the highest value was for Urumqi.We found(1)no obvious association between disease prevalences and ambient PM10concentrations and(2)higher prevalences of disease in humid climates with hot summers and cold winters,but with no centrally heated buildings.Associations between the diseases and economic status as indexed by Gross Domestic Product(GDP)requires further study.ZHANG YinPing LI BaiZhan HUANG Chen YANG Xu QIAN Hua DENG QiHong ZHAO ZhuoHui LI AnGui ZHAO JiaNing ZHANG Xin QU Fang HU Yu YANG Qin WANG Juan ZHANG Ming WANG Fang ZHENG XiaoHong LU Chan LIU ZhiJian SUN YueXia MO JinHan ZHAO YiLi LIU Wei WANG TingTing NORBCK Dan BORNEHAG Carl-Gustaf SUNDELL Jan 2013Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,34:22
3Application of optical coherence tomography angiography in assessment of posterior scleral reinforcement for pathologic myopia显示文摘AIM: To investigate the effect of posterior scleral reinforcement(PSR) on circulation of pathologic myopia eyes with posterior staphyloma by optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA).·METHODS: The study included 30 pathologic myopia eyes with posterior staphyloma which underwent PSR(PSR group) for 6 to 18 mo ago, and 30 age and myopia matched eyes without PSR surgery as control group.Macular, choriocapillaris and radial peripapillary capillary(RPC) flow density were measured by OCTA, and the measurements were compared between groups.·RESULTS: OCTA found no significant differences in macular flow density between PSR and control groups.For the superficial flow, whole enface flow density(WED), fovea density(FD), and parafoveal density(PD)were 46. 55 % ± 5. 19 % vs 47. 29 % ± 4. 12 %( P = 0. 542),31.45%±6.35% vs 31.17%±4.48%(P =0.841), and 48.82%±5.66% vs 49.21% ±4.15%(P =0.756) in PSR and control groups, respectively. For the deep flow, WED, FD, and PD were 52.07% ±5.78% vs 53.95% ±4.62%(P =0.168),29.62%±6.55% vs 29.50%±6.38%(P=0.940), and 56.93%±6.17% vs 58.15% ±5.13%(P =0.407) in PSR and control groups, respectively. The choriocapillary flow density was 61.18 ±3.25% in PSR group vs 60.88% ±2.56% in control group(P=0.692). Also, OCTA found no significant differences in RPCs flow density between PSR and control groups. The optic disc WED, inside disc flow density and peripapillary flow density were 48.47%±4.77%vs 48.11%±4.57%(P =0.813), 45.47%±11.44% vs 46.68%±9.02%(P=0.709), 54.32%±5.29% vs 52.47%±6.62%(P =0.349) in PSR and control groups, respectively.·CONCLUSION: OCTA provides a non-invasive and quantitative approach for monitoring macular and papillary blood flow in pathologic myopia. 4Profiles and removal efficiency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by two different types of sewage treatment plants in Hong Kong显示文摘Sewage discharge could be a major source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) in the coastal waters. Stonecutters Island and Shatin Sewage Treatment Works(SCISTW and STSTW)in Hong Kong, adopted chemically enhanced primary treatment and biological treatment,respectively. This study aimed at(1) determining the removal efficiencies of PAHs,(2) comparing the capabilities in removing PAHs, and(3) characterizing the profile of each individual PAHs, in the two sewage treatment plants(STPs). Quantification of 16 PAHs was conducted by a Gas Chromatography. The concentrations of total PAHs decreased gradually along the treatment processes(from 301 ± 255 and 307 ± 217 ng/L to 14.9 ± 12.1 and 63.3 ± 54.1 ng/L in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively). It was noted that STSTW was more capable in removing total PAHs than SCISTW with average total removal efficiency 94.4% ± 4.12% vs. 79.2% ± 7.48%(p < 0.05). The removal of PAHs was probably due to sorption in particular matter, confirmed by the higher distribution coefficient of individual and total PAHs in solid samples(dewatered sludge contained92.5% and 74.7% of total PAHs in SCISTW and STSTW, respectively) than liquid samples(final effluent-total contained 7.53% and 25.3% of total PAHs in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively).Despite the impressive capability of STSTW and SCISTW in removing PAHs, there was still a considerable amount of total PAHs(1.85 and 39.3 kg/year, respectively for the two STPs) being discharged into Hong Kong coastal waters, which would be an environmental concern.Yu Bon Man Ka Lai Chow Zhang Cheng Wing Yin Mo Yung Hau Chan James Chung Wah Lam Frankie Tat Kwong Lau Wing Cheong Fung Ming Hung Wong 2017Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,3:5
5Prediction of the indication criteria for endoscopic resection of early gastric cancer显示文摘AIM: To find risk factors of lymph node metastasis(LNM) in early gastric cancer(EGC) and to find proper endoscopic therapy indication in EGC.METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the 2270 patients who underwent curative operation for EGC from January 2001 to December 2008. EGC was defined as malignant lesions that do not invade beyond the submucosal layer of the stomach wall irrespective of presence of lymph node metastasis.RESULTS: Among 2270 enrolled patients, LNM was observed in 217(9%) patients. LNM in intramucosal(M) cancer and submucosal(SM) cancer was detectedin 3 8( 2. 8 %, 3 8 / 1 3 4 0) patients and 1 7 9(19%, 179/930) patients, respectively. In univariate analysis, the risk factors for LNM in EGC were size of tumor, Lauren classification, ulcer, lymphatic invasion, vascular invasion, and depth of invasion. However, in multivariate analysis, size of tumor, lymphatic invasion, vascular invasion, and depth of invasion were risk factors for LNM in EGC. Size of tumor, lymphatic invasion, vascular invasion, and depth of invasion were risk factors for LNM in cases of intramucosal cancer and submucosal cancer. In particular, there was no lymph node metastasis in cases of well differentiated early gastric cancer below 1 cm in size without ulcer regardless of lymphovascular invasion.CONCLUSION: Tumor size, perilymphatic-vascular invasion, and depth of invasion were risk factors for LNM in EGC. 6Ethyl Acetate Fraction of Dicliptera chinensis(L.)Juss.Ameliorates Liver Fibrosis by Inducing Autophagy via PI3K/AKT/m TOR/p70S6K Signaling Pathways显示文摘Objective:To investigate the molecular mechanism underlying the anti-hepatic fibrosis activity of ethyl acetate fraction Dicliptera chinensis(L.)Juss.(EDC)in human hepatic stellate cells(HSCs)in vitro and in a carbon tetrachloride(CCl4)-induced hepatic fibrosis mouse model in vivo.Methods:For in vitro study,HSCs were pre-treated with platelet-derived growth factor(10 ng/mL)for 2 h to ensure activation and treated with EDC for 24 h and 48 h,respectively.The effect of EDC on HSCs was assessed using cell counting kit-8 assay,EdU staining,transmission electron microscopy,immunofluorescence staining,and Western blot,respectively.For in vivo experiments,mice were intraperitoneally injected with CCl4(2μL/g,adjusted to a 25%concentration in olive oil),3 times per week for 6 weeks,to develop a hepatic fibrosis model.Forty 8-week-old male C57 BL/6 mice were divided into 4 groups using a random number table(n=10),including control,model,positive control and EDC treatment groups.Mice in the EDC and colchicine groups were intragastrically administered EDC(0.5 g/kg)or colchicine(0.2 mg/kg)once per day for 6 weeks.Mice in the control and model groups received an equal volume of saline.Biochemical assays and histological examinations were used to assess liver damage.Protein expression levels ofα-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA)and microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 B(LC3 B)were measured by Western blot.Results:EDC reduced pathological damage associated with liver fibrosis,downregulated the expression ofα-SMA and upregulated the expression of LC3 B(P<0.05),both in HSCs and the CCl4-induced liver fibrosis mouse model.The intervention of bafilomycin A1 and rapamycin in HSCs strongly supported the notion that inhibition of autophagy enhancedα-SMA protein expression levels(P<0.01).The results also found that the levels of phosphoinositide(PI3 K),p-PI3 K,AKT,p-AKT,mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR),p-mTOR,and p-p70 S6 K all decreased after EDC treatment(P<0.05).Conclusion:EDC has anti-hepatic fibrosis activity by inducing autophagy and might be a potential drug to be further developed for human liver fibrosis therapy.LIU Yuan BI Yan-meng PAN Ting ZENG Ting MO Chan SUN Bing GAO Lei LYU Zhi-ping 2022Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine2022,28,1:3
7Risk factors for postoperative recurrence after primary bowel resection in patients with Crohn's disease显示文摘AIM To evaluate the risk factors for postoperative recurrence after primary bowel resection in a cohort of Korean Crohn's disease(CD) patients.METHODS This study included 260 patients with no history of previous bowel surgery who underwent primary surgery for CD between January 2000 and December 2010 at Asan Medical Center(Seoul, South Korea). The median follow-up period was 101 mo.RESULTS During the follow-up period, 66 patients(25.4%) underwent a second operation for disease recurrence.At 1, 5 and 10 years after the first operation, the cumulative rate of surgical recurrence was 1.1%, 8.3% and 35.9% and clinical recurrence occurred in 1.2%, 23.6% and 68.1%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, undergoing an emergency operation was a significant risk factor for surgical recurrence-free survival(SRFS) [HR = 2.431, 95%CI: 1.394-4.240, P = 0.002], as were the presence of perianal disease after the first operation(HR = 1.715, 95%CI: 1.005-2.926, P = 0.048) and history of smoking(HR = 1.798, 95%CI: 1.088-2.969, P = 0.022). The postoperative use of antitumor necrosis factor(TNF) agents reduced SRFS risk(HR = 0.521, 95%CI: 0.300-0.904, P = 0.02).CONCLUSION History of smoking, postoperative perianal disease and undergoing an emergency operation were independent risk factors for surgical recurrence. 9Trending IC design directions in 2022显示文摘For the non-stop demands for a better and smarter society, the number of electronic devices keeps increasing exponentially;and the computation power, communication data rate, smart sensing capability and intelligence are always not enough. Hardware supports software, while the integrated circuit(IC) is the core of hardware. In this long review paper, we summarize and discuss recent trending IC design directions and challenges, and try to give the readers big/cool pictures on each selected small/hot topics. 10Saeng-Kankunbi-Tang(生肝健脾汤) Protects Liver against Oxidative Damage through Activation of ERK/Nrf2 Pathway显示文摘Objective: To investigate the cytoprotective effects of Saeng-kankunbi-tang(生肝健脾汤, SKT), a herbal prescription consisting of Artemisia capillaris and Alisma canaliculatum, and its underlying mechanism involved. Methods: In mice, blood biochemistry and histopathology were assessed in carbon tetrachloride(CCl4)-induced oxidative hepatic injury in vivo. The animal groups included vehicle-treated control, CCl4, SKT 500 mg/(kg·day) CCl4+SKT 200 or 500 mg/(kg·day). In Hep G2 cell, tert-butyl hydroperoxide(t BHP) induced severe oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in vitro. The cyto-protective effects of SKT were determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT) assay, fluorescence activated cell sorting analysis and western blotting. Results: The administration of SKT prevented liver damage induced by CCl4 in mice, by inhibition of hepatocyte degeneration and inflammatory cell infiltration as well as plasma parameters such as alanine aminotransferase(P<0.01). Moreover, treatment with t BHP induced hepatocyte death and cellular reactive oxygen species production in hepatocyte cell line. However, SKT pretreatment(30–300 μg/m L) reduced this cell death and oxidative stress(P<0.01). More importantly, SKT inhibited the ability of t BHP to induce changes in mitochondrial membrane transition in cell stained with rhodamine 123(P<0.01). Furthermore, treatment with SKT induced extracellular signal-regulated kinases-mediated nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2(Nrf2) activation as well as the expressions of heme oxygenase 1 and glutamate-cystein ligase catalytic, Nrf2 target genes. 14Utilization of a spiropyran derivative in a polymeric film optode for selective fluorescent sensing of zinc ion显示文摘A new spiropyran derivative was synthesized and first utilized in a polymeric film-based optical sensor for zinc ion. Spiropyrans, combining the characteristics of metal binding and signal transduction, show potential function in the design of optical chemical sensors (optodes) toward metal ions. When embedded in a plasticized poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane, the newly synthesized spiropyran derivative 1 exhibits obvious fluorescence enhancement at 630 nm in the presence of zinc ion in aqueous solution. With the optimum condition described, the optode membrane responds to zinc ion over a dynamic range of 4.94×10?7 to 4.15×10?4 mol·L?1, with a detection limit of 1.51×10?7 mol·L?1.
