| 2 | Polymorphisms of MTHFD,plasma homocysteine levels, and risk of gastric cancer in ahigh-risk Chinese population显示文摘Purpose:Accumulative evidence suggests that folate has a protective effect on gastric cancer. The methylenetetrahyd-rofolate dlehydrogenase(MTHFD) plays an important role in folate and homocysteine metabolisms, and polymorphisms of MTHFD may result in disturbance of the folate-mediated homocysteine pathway. The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that genetic variants of MTHFD and plasma homocysteine levels are associated with risk of gastric cancer and modulated by genotypes of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase(MTHFR). Experimental Design: We genotyped G1958A and T401C in MTHFD and C677T in MTHFR and detected total plasma homocysteine(tHcy) levels in a case-control study of 589 gastric cancer cases and 635 cancer-free controls in a high-risk Chinese population. Results:The variant genotypes of MTHFD 1958AA and 401CC were associated with a significantly increased risk of gastric canceradjusted odds ratio(OR), 2.05; 95% confidence interval(95% CI),1.34-3.13 for 1958AA; adjusted OR,1.43; 95% CI,1.14-1.80 for 401CC compared with 1958GG/GA and 401TT/TC genotypes, respectively. Both of the effects were more evident in the subjects carrying MTHFR 677CT/TT genotypes. The average tHcy level was significantly higher in gastric cancer cases than in controls(P < 0.01), and the upper quartile of tHcy (> 13.6 mu mol/L) was associated with an 82% significantly increased risk of gastric cancer, compared with the lowest quartile of tHcy(<= 8.0 pmol/L;adjusted OR,1.82; 95% CI,1.20-2.75). Conclusions:The strong associations between MTHFD variants and the plasma tHcy levels and gastric cancer risk suggest, for the first time, a possible gene-environment interaction between genetic variants of folate-metabolizing genes and high tHcy levels in gastric carcinogenesis. | Wang, L. | 3 | Pollinator attraction in Cornus capitata (Cornaceae): the relative role of visual and olfactory cues显示文摘Aims it is generally accepted that visual displays and floral scent play important roles in communication between flowering plants and their pollinators.However,the relative role of visual and olfactory cues in pollinator attraction is largely unknown.in this study,we determined the roles of both types of cue in attracting pollinators to Cornus capitata,a medium sized tree with each capitulum sur-rounded by four large,white,petaloid bracts.Methods Pollinator observations and pollination experiments were con-ducted in a natural population;the inflorescences’visual and olfactory signals were characterized by spectral and chemical analyses;the responses of pollinators to visual and olfactory cues were tested using dual-choice behavioural bioassays;the relative roles of visual and olfactory cues in pollinator attrac-tion were tested by comparing the responses of pollinators to inflorescences subjected to three experimental treatments(intact,all bracts removed,and capitulum removed)within the natural population.Important Findings For fruit set,C.capitata is entirely dependent on pollinators,with a bee,Anthophora sp.,being the main pollinator.bracts present high colour distance and green contrast against the leaves.Twelve volatile compounds in the floral scent were detected,most of which have previously been reported to be attractive to a broad spectrum of bee species.behavioural bioassays showed that both,visual cues alone and olfactory cues alone,are attractive to pollinating bees.However,vis-ual cues alone attracted significantly more approaches than olfactory cues alone,while olfactory cues alone elicited a significantly higher landing percentage than visual cues alone.The finding suggests that,in the C.capitata-Anthophora sp.interaction,visual cues are mainly used for location from long distances,while olfactory cues mainly aid landing from short distances.our results indicate that different modalities of floral cues should be considered together to understand fully the communication between flowering plant and pollinators. | Bo Song Yang Niu Jürg Stöcklin Gao Chen De-Li Peng Yong-Qian Gao Hang Sun | 2015 | Journal of Plant Ecology2015，8，2： | 3 |
| 4 | Machine learning for detecting mesial temporal lobe epilepsy by structural and functional neuroimaging显示文摘Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy(mTLE),the most common type of focal epilepsy,is associated with functional and structural brain alterations.Machine learning(ML)techniques have been successfully used in discriminating mTLE from healthy controls.However,either functional or structural neuroimaging data are mostly used separately as input,and the opportunity to combine both has not been exploited yet.We conducted a multimodal ML study based on functional and structural neuroimaging measures.We enrolled 37 patients with left mTLE,37 patients with right mTLE,and 74 healthy controls and trained a support vector ML model to distinguish them by using each measure and the combinations of the measures.For each single measure,we obtained a mean accuracy of 74%and 69%for discriminating left mTLE and right mTLE from controls,respectively,and 64%when all patients were combined.We achieved an accuracy of 78%by integrating functional data and 79%by integrating structural data for left mTLE,and the highest accuracy of 84%was obtained when all functional and structural measures were combined.These findings suggest that combining multimodal measures within a single model is a promising direction for improving the classification of individual patients with mTLE. | Baiwan Zhou Dongmei An Fenglai Xiao Running Niu Wenbin Li Wei Li Xin Tong Graham J Kemp Dong Zhou Qiyong Gong Du Lei | 2020 | Frontiers of Medicine2020，14，5： | 2 |
