Interpreting the sea surface temperature warming trend in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea显示文摘Previous studies have demonstrated that the low-frequency sea surface temperature(SST) variability in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea(YECS) is linked to large-scale climate variability, but explanations on the mechanisms vary. This study examines the low-frequency variability and trends of some atmospheric and oceanic variables to discuss their different effects on the YECS warming. The increasing temperature trend is also observed at a hydrographic section transecting the Kuroshio. The increasing rate of ocean temperature decreases with depth, which might result in an increase in vertical stratification and a decrease in vertical mixing, and thus plays a positive role on the YECS warming. The surface net heat flux(downward positive)displays a decreasing trend, which is possibly a result of the YECS warming, and, in turn, inhibits it. Wind speeds show different trends in different datasets, such that its role in the YECS warming is uncertain. The trends in wind stress divergence and curl have large uncertainties, so their effects on SST warming are still unclear. The Kuroshio heat transport calculated in this study, displays no significantly increasing trend, so is an unlikely explanation for the SST warming. Limited by sparse ocean observations, sophisticated assimilative climate models are still needed to unravel the mechanisms behind the YECS warming.PEI YuHua LIU XiaoHui HE HaiLun 2017Science China Earth Sciences2017,60,8:10
Upper ocean response to tropical cyclone wind forcing: A case study of typhoon Rammasun(2008)显示文摘The characteristics of the upper ocean response to tropical cyclone wind(TCW) forcing in the northwestern Pacific were investigated using satellite and Argo data, as well as an ocean general circulation model. In particular, a case study was carried out on typhoon Rammasun, which passed through our study area during May 6–13, 2008. It is found that the local response right under the TCW forcing is characterized by a quick deepening of the surface mixed layer, a strong latent heat loss to the atmosphere, and an intense upwelling near the center of typhoon, leading to a cooling of the oceanic surface layer that persists as a cold wake along the typhoon track. More interestingly, the upper ocean response exhibits a four-layer thermal structure, including a cooling layer near the surface and a warming layer right below, accompanied by another pair of cooling/warming layers in the thermocline. The formation of the surface cooling/warming layers can be readily explained by the strong vertical mixing induced by TCW forcing, while the thermal response in the thermocline is probably a result of the cyclone-driven upwelling and the associated advective processes.PEI YuHua ZHANG RongHua CHEN DaKe 2015Science China Earth Sciences2015,58,9:6
Cranial irradiation impairs intrinsic excitability and synaptic plasticity of hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons with implications for cognitive function显示文摘Radiation therapy is a standard treatment for head and neck tumors. However, patients often exhibit cognitive impairments following radiation therapy.Previous studies have revealed that hippocampal dysfunction, specifically abnormal hippocampal neurogenesis or neuroinflammation, plays a key role in radiation-induced cognitive impairment. However, the long-term effects of radiation with respect to the electrophysiological adaptation of hippocampal neurons remain poorly characterized. We found that mice exhibited cognitive impairment 3 months after undergoing 10 minutes of cranial irradiation at a dose rate of 3 Gy/min.Furthermore,we observed a remarkable reduction in spike firing and excitatory synaptic input,as well as greatly enhanced inhibitory inputs,in hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons.Corresponding to the electrophysiological adaptation,we found reduced expression of synaptic plasticity marker VGLUT1 and increased expression of VGAT.Furthermore,in irradiated mice,long-term potentiation in the hippocampus was weakened and GluR1 expression was inhibited. These findings suggest that radiation can impair intrinsic excitability and synaptic plasticity in hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons.Min-Yi Wu Wen-Jun Zou Pei Yu Yuhua Yang Shao-Jian Li Qiang Liu Jiatian Xie Si-Qi Chen Wei-Jye Lin Yamei Tang 2022Neural Regeneration Research2022,17,10:5
Generation of tooth-like structures from integration-free human urine induced pluripotent stem cells显示文摘Background:Tooth is vital not only for a good smile, but also good health.Yet,we lose tooth regularly due to accidents or diseases. An ideal solution to this problem is to regenerate tooth with patients’own cells. Here we describe the generation of tooth-like structures from integration-free human urine induced pluripotent stem cells(ifhU-iPSCs).Results:We first differentiated ifhU-iPSCs to epithelial sheets, which were then recombined with E14.5 mouse dental mesenchymes.Tooth-like structures were recovered from these recombinants in 3 weeks with success rate up to 30%for 8 different iPSC lines, comparable to H1 hESC.We further detected that ifhU-iPSC derived epithelial sheets differentiated into enamel-secreting ameloblasts in the tooth-like structures, possessing physical properties such as elastic modulus and hardness found in the regular human tooth. Conclusion:Our results demonstrate that ifhU-iPSCs can be used to regenerate patient specific dental tissues or even tooth for further drug screening or regenerative therapies.Jinglei Cai Yanmei Zhang Pengfei Liu Shubin Chen Xuan Wu Yuhua Sun Ang Li Ke Huang Rongping Luo Lihui Wang Ying Liu Ting Zhou Shicheng Wei Guangjin Pan Duanqing Pei 2013Cell Regeneration2013,2,1:4
Seasonal variability of the Kuroshio Current at the PN Section in the East China Sea based on in-situ observation from 1987 to 2010显示文摘As the spatio-temporal variability of the Kuroshio is highly influenced by mesoscale eddies, representing its seasonal variability characteristics requires sufficiently long term observations to reduce the uncertainties.Geostrophic velocity data estimated from hydrographic observation from 1987 to 2010 and the shipboard ADCP velocity data from 1993 to 2008 at the PN Section in the central East China Sea are collected to view the seasonal variability objectively. From both types of observation, it is found that the seasonal climatology mean of the Kuroshio Current exhibits significant difference in three areas, which are located at the Kuroshio Current core and its two flanks in a shallow layer less than 300 m, with the weakest northeast current at the core in autumn, the strongest counter current on the right flank in spring, and the strongest northeast current on the left flank in autumn, respectively. The seasonal variance of the Kuroshio Current also exhibits significant difference on the offshore side of the Kuroshio, with larger variance in spring and summer while smaller variance in autumn and winter. For the current parallel to the PN Section, the ratio of the seasonal variability component to the intraseasonal variability component is relatively smaller than that for the current perpendicular to the PN Section.Further analyses indicate that the seasonal variability at the PN Section is tightly linked to the upstream and downstream current variability.WEI Yanzhou PEI Yuhua ZHANG Rong-Hua 2015Acta Oceanologica Sinica2015,34,5:2
Variability of sea surface height in the South China Sea and its relationship to Pacific oscillations显示文摘The spatio-temporal variability modes of the sea surface height in the South China Sea(SCS-SSH) are obtained using the Cyclostationary Empirical Orthogonal Function(CSEOF) method, and their relationships to the Pacific basin scale oscillations are examined. The first CSEOF mode of the SCS-SSH is a strongly phase-locked annual cycle that is modulated by a slowly varying principal component(PC); the strength of this annual cycle becomes reduced during El Ni?o events(at largest by 30% off in 1997/98) and enhanced during La Ni?a events. The second mode is a low frequency oscillation nearly on decadal time scale, with its spatial structure exhibiting an obscure month-dependence; the corresponding PC is highly correlated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation(PDO) index.Five independent oscillations in the Pacific are isolated by using the independent component(IC) analysis(ICA)method, and their effects on the SCS-SSH are examined. It is revealed that the pure ENSO mode(which resembles the east Pacific ENSO) has little effect on the low frequency variability of the SCS-SSH while the ENSO reddening mode(which resembles the central Pacific ENSO) has clear effect. As the ENSO reddening mode is an important constituent of the PDO, this explains why the PDO is more important than ENSO in modulating the low frequency variability of SCS-SSH. Meridional saddle like oscillation mode, the Kuroshio extension warming mode, and the equatorial cooling mode are also successfully detected by the ICA, but they have little effect on the low frequency variability of the SCS-SSH. Further analyses suggest the Pacific oscillations are probably influencing the variability of the SCS-SSH in ways that are different from that of the sea surface temperature(SST) in the SCS.PEI Yuhua ZHANG Rong-Hua ZHANG Xiangming JIANG Lianghong WEI Yanzhou 2015Acta Oceanologica Sinica2015,34,12:2

Roles of different physical processes in upper ocean responses to Typhoon Rammasun(2008)-induced wind forcing显示文摘This study investigates the roles of different physical processes in the oceanic response to tropical cyclones(TCs) in the Pacific, using an ocean general circulation model with several numerical experiments. A case study is focused on Typhoon Rammasun, which passed through the northwestern tropical Pacific in May 2008. TC-induced wind stress fields are extracted using a locally-weighted regression(Loess) method from a six-hourly Cross-Calibrated Multi-Platform satellite scatterometer wind product. By comparing model experiments with TC wind forcing being explicitly included or not, the effects of TC on the ocean are isolated in a clean way. The local oceanic response is characterized by a cooling in the surface layer that persists along the typhoon track as a cold wake, and a deepening of the mixed layer(ML). The TC-induced wind can affect the ocean through the momentum effects, the ML processes(the stirring effect on the ML depth), and heat flux(via wind speed), repectively.Analyses of numerical experiments with these different underlying processes explicitly represented or not indicate that vertical mixing and upwelling are dominant processes responsible for surface cooling, while the surface heat flux also plays a nonnegligible role. Specifically, vertical mixing, upwelling and surface heat flux account for respectively ~53%, ~31% and ~16% of the sea surface temperature cooling. However, for the ML response, the vertical mixing and surface heat flux are dominant processes for the ML deepening, while the contribution from upwelling process is negligible. This study provides new insights into how TC-indcued wind forcing affects the ocean by isolating each different individual process in a clear way, which differs from previous direct heat budget analyses.Yuhua PEI Rong-Hua ZHANG Dake CHEN 2019Science China Earth Sciences2019,62,4:1

Vital roles for ethnobotany in conservation and sustainable development显示文摘The scientific discipline of ethnobotany-the study of human interactions with plants e has applications in many fields of current global concern, including food security, climate change, biodiversity conservation and human health.Ethnobotanical studies can provide insights into the ways that societies interact locally with their environmental resources.Ethnobotanical studies have the potential to bring together and integrate local and scientific knowledge to advance the cause of achieving biocultural conservation(Gaoue et al.,2017;Prance,2007).This Special Issue of Plant Diversity contains recent ethnobotanical studies that aim to contribute to determining the most useful ways ethnobotany can be used to confront human problems in the future.Specifically, this issue shows ways in which ethnobotany can contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, especially with regards to documentation and maintenance of indigenous and local knowledge of plants. The research in this issue also describes innovative practices communities have adopted to maintain their plant resources。Shengji Pei Hamilton Alan Yuhua Wang 2020Plant Diversity2020,42,6:1
A case study of the consistency problem in the inverse estimation显示文摘Inverse technique is a widely used method in oceanography, but it has a problem that the retrieved solutions often violate model prior assumptions. To tune the model has consistent solutions, an iteration approach, which successively utilizes the posterior statistics for next round inverse estimation, is introduced and tested from a real case study. It is found that the consistency may become elusive as the determinants of solution and noise covariance matrices become zero in the iteration process. However, after several steps of such operation, the difference between posterior statistics and the model prior ones can be gradually reduced.WEI Yanzhou KANG Xianbiao PEI Yuhua 2017Acta Oceanologica Sinica2017,36,9:0
A New Probability Distribution Function of Wave Steepness显示文摘Wave steepness is an important characteristic describing the severity of sea state in ocean engineering. In the existing theoretical and experimental studies, wave steepness is often substituted by some related quantities. In this paper,a new probability density function(pdf) of steepness, which is a pdf of the steepness in its original definition,is obtained for narrowband Gaussian processes. The drawback inherent in the previous theoretical pdfs of steepness, that is,the probability density at zero steepness is nonzero, has been eliminated. Laboratory experiments were conducted in a wind-wave flume to measure the wave steepness distribution. Comparisons among laboratory measurements and some theoretical pdfs of steepness show that the new pdf generally fits the data better than the one proposed by Zheng et al.(1999) .JIANG Xiulan ZHENG Guizhen PEI Yuhua 2008Journal of Ocean University of China2008,7,3:0
Preparation and Properties of Sapphire by Edge-defined Film-fed Growth(EFG) Method with Different Growth Directions显示文摘Sapphire, belonging to hexagonal crystal system, is typically anisotropic which makes it direction-sensitive. To research the effects of growth directions on properties of sapphire, c-[0001] seed(c-sapphire) and a-[11-20] seed(a-sapphire) were used to prepare sapphire by edge-defined film-fed growth(EFG) method. The samples were analyzed through lattice integrity, dislocation and corrosion performance by double-crystal XRD, OM, AFM, SEM and EDX. It was shown that the lattice integrities of two growth-direction crystals were both well due to the small FWHM values. While the average densities of dislocation in c-sapphire and a-sapphire were 9.2×103 and 3.9×103 cm-2 respectively, the energy of dislocation in c-sapphire was lower than that in a-sapphire. During Strong Phosphoric Acid(SPA) etching, the surface of c-sapphire basically kept smooth but in a-sapphire there were many point-like corrosion pits where aluminum and oxygen atoms lost by 2:1. Our work means that it will be promising for growing c-[0001] seed sapphire by EFG if aided by parameter optimization.徐尚君 姚正军 PEI Guangqing LUO Xixi WU Xiaofeng LIN Yuhua 2018Journal of Wuhan University of Technology(Materials Science)2018,33,5:0
A novel protein complex that regulates active DNA demethylation in Arabidopsis显示文摘Active DNA demethylation is critical for altering DNA methylation patterns and regulating gene expression. The 5-methylcytosine DNA glycosylase/lyase ROS1 initiates a base-excision repair pathway for active DNA demethylation and is required for the prevention of DNA hypermethylation at 1000 s of genomic regions in Arabidopsis. How ROS1 is regulated and targeted to specific genomic regions is not well understood. Here,we report the discovery of an Arabidopsis protein complex that contains ROS1,regulates ROS1 gene expression, and likely targets the ROS1 protein to specific genomic regions.ROS1 physically interacts with a WD40 domain protein(RWD40),which in turn interacts with a methyl-DNA binding protein(RMB1)as well as with a zinc finger and homeobox domain protein(RHD1).RMB1 binds to DNA that is methylated in any sequence context, and this binding is necessary for its function in vivo.Loss-of-function mutations in RWD40,RMB1,or RHD1 cause DNA hypermethylation at several tested genomic regions independently of the known ROS1 regulator IDM1.Because the hypermethylated genomic regions include the DNA methylation monitoring sequence in the ROS1 promoter, plants mutated in RWD40,RMB1,or RHD1 show increased ROS1 expression.Importantly,ROS1 binding to the ROS1 promoter requires RWD40,RMB1,and RHD1,suggesting that this complex dictates ROS1 targeting to this locus. Our results demonstrate that ROS1 forms a protein complex with RWD40,RMB1,and RHD1,and that this novel complex regulates active DNA demethylation at several endogenous loci in Arabidopsis.Pan Liu Wen-Feng Nie Xiansong Xiong Yuhua Wang Yuwei Jiang Pei Huang Xueqiang Lin Guochen Qin Huan Huang Qingfeng Niu Jiamu Du Zhaobo Lang Rosa Lozano-Duran Jian-Kang Zhu 2021Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2021,63,4:0
