1Monitoring Glacier and Supra-glacier Lakes from Space in Mt. Qomolangma Region of the Himalayas on the Tibetan Plateau in China显示文摘Because of the large number and remoteness, satellite data, including microwave data and optical imagery, have commonly been used in alpine glaciers surveys. Using remote sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques the paper presents the results of a multitempora satellite glacier extent mapping and glacier changes by glacier sizes in the Mt. Qomolangma region at the northern slopes of the middle Himalayas over the Tibetan Plateau. Glaciers in this region have both retreated and advanced in the past 35 years, with retreat dominating. The glacier retreat area was 3.23 km2 (or 0.75 km2 yr-1) during 1974 and 1976, 8.68 km2 (or 0.36 km2 yr-1) during 1976 and 1992, 1.44 km2 (or 0.12 km2 yr-1) during 1992-2000. 1.14 km2 (or 0.22 km2 yr-1) during 2000-2003, and 0.52 km2 (or 0.07 km2 yr-1) during 2003-2008, respectively. While supra-glacier lakes on the debris-terminus of the Rongbuk Glacier were enlarged dramatically at the same time, from 0.05 km2 in 1974 increased to 0.71 km2 in 2008, which was more than 13 times larger in the last 35 years. In addition, glacier changes also showed spatial differences, for example, glacier retreat rate was the fastest at glacier termini between 5400 and 5700 m a.s.l than at other elevations. 2Clue to a thorough understanding of terahertz pulse generation by femtosecond laser filamentation显示文摘In this work, it has been demonstrated that in order to fully understand the terahertz(THz) pulse generation process during femtosecond laser filamentation, the interaction between THz wave and air plasma has to be taken into account. This interaction is mainly associated with the spatial confinement of the THz pulse by the plasma column, which could be described by the one-dimensional negative dielectric(1DND) waveguide model. By combining the 1 DND model with the conventional four-wave mixing(4WM) and photocurrent(PC) models,the variation of THz spectral amplitude and width obtained in experiments could be better understood. 3Seasonal variation of snow microbial community structure in the East Rongbuk glacier, Mt. Everest显示文摘The bacterial diversity and abundance in the snow of East Rongbuk glacier, Mt. Everest were examined through 16S rRNA gene clone library and flow cytometry approaches. In total, 35 16S rRNA gene sequences were obtained, which belong to α, β, γ-Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, CFB, Cyanobacteria, Eukaryotic chloroplast, and TM7 candidate phylum respectively. γ-Proteobacteria was the dominant bacterial group in this region, while the genera Acinetobacter and Leclercia were domi- nant on the genus level. The community structure varied seasonally. The bacterial abundance in sum- mer snow was higher than that in winter. Moreover, the snow bacterial community structures in both seasons were diverse, with not only common species but season-specific species. The common species most likely originated from the Tibet Plateau. Bacteria in summer snow are affiliated with marine environ- ment, whereas bacteria in winter snow are closely related to more diverse environments and show the feature of resistance to cold. Seasonal variations of abundance and bacterial diversity were most proba- bly due to the seasonal characteristics of climate and atmospheric circulation in Mt. 6The mass-balance characteristics and sensitivities to climate variables of Laohugou Glacier No.12,western Qilian Mountains,China显示文摘Due to global warming, glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau(TP) are experiencing widespread shrinkage; however, the mechanisms controlling glacier variations across the TP are still rather unclear, especially on the northeastern TP. In this study, a physically based, distributed surface-energy and mass-balance model was used to simulate glacier mass balance forced by meteorological data. The model was applied to Laohugou No. 12 Glacier, western Qilian Mountains, China, during2010~2012. The simulated albedo and mass balance were validated and calibrated by in situ measurements. The simulated annual glacier-wide mass balances were-385 mm water equivalent(w.e.) in 2010/2011 and-232 mm w.e. in 2011/2012,respectively. The mean equilibrium-line altitude(ELA) was 5,015 m a.s.l., during 2010~2012, which ascended by 215 m compared to that in the 1970 s. The mean accumulation area ratio(AAR) was 39% during the two years. Climatic-sensitivity experiments indicated that the change of glacier mass balance resulting from a 1.5 °C increase in air temperature could be offset by a 30% increase in annual precipitation. 7Elemental composition in surface snow from the ultra-high elevation area of Mt. Qomolangma (Everest)显示文摘A total of 14 surface snow (0―10 cm) samples were collected along the climbing route (6500―8844 m a.s.l.) on the northern slope of Mt. Qomolangma in May, 2005. Analysis of elemental concentrations in these samples showed that there are no clear trends for element variations with elevation due to re- distribution of surface snow by strong winds during spring. In addition, local crustal aerosol inputs also have an influence on elemental composition of surface snow. Comparison between elemental concentration datasets of 2005 and 1997 indicated that data from 2005 were of higher quality. Elemental concentrations (especially for heavy metals) at Mt. Qomolangma are comparable with polar sites, and far lower than large cities. This indicates that anthropogenic activities and heavy metal pollution have little effect on the Mt. 8Microbial community structure in major habitats above 6000 m on Mount Everest显示文摘Bacterial abundance in surface snow between 6600 and 8000 m a.s.l. on the northern slope of Mt. Ev- erest was investigated by flow cytometry. Bacterial diversity in serac ice at 6000 m a.s.l., glacier melt- water at 6350 m, and surface snow at 6600 m a.s.l. was examined by constructing a 16S rRNA gene clone library. Bacterial abundance in snow was higher than that in the Antarctic but similar to other mountain regions in the world. Bacterial abundance in surface snow increased with altitude but showed no correlation with chemical parameters. Bacteria in the cryosphere on Mt. Everest were closely related to those isolated from soil, aquatic environments, plants, animals, humans and other frozen environ- ments. Bacterial community structures in major habitats above 6000 m were variable. The Cyto- phaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides (CFB) group absolutely dominated in glacial meltwater, while β-Proteobacteria and the CFB group dominated in serac ice, and β-Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria dominated in surface snow. 9Light-absorbing impurities on Keqikaer Glacier in western Tien Shan: concentrations and potential impact on albedo reduction显示文摘Light-absorbing impurities on glaciers are important factors that influence glacial surface albedo and accelerate glacier melt. In this study, the quantity of light-absorbing impurities on Keqikaer Glacier in western Tien Shan, Central Asia, was measured. We found that the average concentrations of black carbon was 2,180 ng/g, with a range from 250 ng/g to more than 10,000 ng/g. The average concentrations of organic carbon and mineral dust were 1,738 ng/g and 194 μg/g, respectively. Based on simulations performed with the Snow Ice Aerosol Radiative model simulations, black carbon and dust are responsible for approximately 64% and 9%, respectively, of the albedo reduction, and are associated with instantaneous radiative forcing of 323.18 W/m2(ranging from 142.16 to 619.25 W/m2) and 24.05 W/m2(ranging from 0.15 to69.77 W/m2), respectively. For different scenarios, the albedo and radiative forcing effect of black carbon is considerably greater than that of dust. The estimated radiative forcing at Keqikaer Glacier is higher than most similar values estimated by previous studies on the Tibetan Plateau, perhaps as a result of black carbon enrichment by melt scavenging. Light-absorbing impurities deposited on Keqikaer Glacier appear to mainly originate from central Asia, Siberia, western China(including the Taklimakan Desert) and parts of South Asia in summer, and from the Middle East and Central Asia in winter.A footprint analysis indicates that a large fraction(>60%) of the black carbon contributions on Keqikaer Glacier comes from anthropogenic sources. 11Potential Effect of Black Carbon on Glacier Mass Balance during the Past 55 Years of Laohugou Glacier No. 12, Western Qilian Mountains显示文摘This study reconstructed the annual mass balance(MB)of Laohugou Glacier No.12 in the western Qilian Mountains during 1961–2015.The annual MB was calculated based on a temperature-index and an accumulation model with inputs of daily air temperature and precipitation recorded by surrounding meteorological stations.The model was calibrated by in-situ MB measurements conducted on the glacier during 2010–2015.Change in constructed annual MB had three phases.During Phase Ⅰ(1961-1984),glacier-wide MB values were slightly positive with an average MB of 24±276 mm w.e.(water equivalent).During Phase Ⅱ(1984-1995),the MB values became slightly negative with an average MB of?50±276 mm w.e..The most negative MB values were found during Phase Ⅲ(1996–2015),with an average MB of?377±276 mm w.e.Climatic analysis showed that the warming led to accelerated glacier mass loss despite a persistent increase of precipitation during the analysis period.However,an increase of black carbon deposited on the glacier surface since the 1980s could have contributed to intensified glacier melt.From simulations and measurements of MB on the Urumqi Glacier No.1,26%of glacier melt caused by black carbon could be identified.Jizu Chen Xiang Qin Shichang Kang Wentao Du Weijun Sun Yushuo Liu 2020Journal of Earth Science2020,31,2:4
12Quantitative Analysis of Cytokinins in Plants by High Performance Liquid Chromatography:Electronspray Ionization Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry显示文摘The present paper introduces a highly sensitive and selective method for simultaneous quantification of 12 cytokinins(free form and their conjugates).The method includes a protocol of extraction with methanol/water/formic acid(15/4/1,v/v/v) to the micro-scale samples,pre-purification with solid phase extraction(SPE) cartridges of the extracts,separation with a high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) and detection by an electrospray ionization ion trap mass spectrometry(ESI-Ion trap-MS) system in a consecutive ion monitoring(CRM) mode at the three stage fragmentation of mass spectrometry(MS 3).The lowest detection level of the cytokinins of the method reaches 0.1-2.0 pg with a very wide range of linear regression from 1-512 pg,at the coefficient factors of 0.98-0.99.The feasibility of this method has been proven in the application of the method to the analysis of the trace-amount contents of cytokinins in the micro-scale samples of various types of plant materials,such as aerial parts of rice and poplar leaves etc.12 endogenous cytokinins had been identified and quantified in the plant tissues,with an acceptable relatively higher recovery rate from 40% to 70%.Weiqi Chen Ying Gai Shichang Liu Renxiao Wang Xiangning Jiang 2010Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2010,52,10:4
13Effects of freeze–thaw cycles on soil N_2O concentration and flux in the permafrost regions of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau显示文摘Nitrous oxide(N_2 O) is one of the most important greenhouse gases in the atmosphere; freeze–thaw cycles(FTCs) might strongly influence the emission of soil N_2 O on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau(QTP). However, there is a lack of in situ research on the characteristics of soil N_2 O concentration and flux in response to variations in soil properties caused by FTCs.Here, we report the effect of FTC-induced changes in soil properties on the soil N_2 O concentration and flux in the permafrost region of the higher reaches of the Shule River Basin on the northeastern margin of the QTP. We measured chemical properties of the topsoil, activities of soil microorganisms, and air temperature(AT), as well as soil N_2 O concentration and flux, over an annual cycle from July 31, 2011, to July 30, 2012. The results showed that soil N_2 O concentration was significantly affected by soil temperature(ST), soil moisture(SM), soil salinity(SS), soil polyphenol oxidase(SPO), soil alkaline phosphatase(SAP), and soil culturable actinomycetes(SCA), ranked as SM>SS>ST>SPO>SAP>SCA, whereas ST significantly increased soil N_2 O flux, compared with SS. 14Development of a novel RNAi therapy:Engineered miR-31 exosomes promoted the healing of diabetic wounds显示文摘Rationale:Chronic wounds associated with diabetes exact a heavy burden on individuals and society and do not have a specific treatment.Exosome therapy is an extension of stem cell therapy,and RNA interference(RNAi)-based therapy is a type of advanced precision therapy.Based on the discovery of chronic wound-related genes in diabetes,we combined exosome therapy and RNAi therapy through an engineering approach for the treatment of diabetic chronic wounds.Methods:We combined exosome therapy and RNAi therapy to establish a precision therapy for diabetes-associated wounds via an engineered exosome approach.Results:First,chronic diabetic wounds express low levels of miR-31-5p compared with nondiabetic wounds,and an miR-31-5p mimic was shown to be effective in promoting the proliferation and migration of three wound-related cell types in vitro.Second,bioinformatics analysis,luciferase reporter assays and western blotting suggested that miR-31-5p promoted angiogenesis,fibrogenesis and reepithelization by inhibiting factor-inhibiting HIF-1(HIF1AN,also named FIH)and epithelial membrane protein-1(EMP-1).Third,engineered miR-31 exosomes were generated as a miR-31-5p RNAi therapeutic agent.In vivo,the engineered miR-31 exosomes promoted diabetic wound healing by enhancing angiogenesis,fibrogenesis and reepithelization.Conclusion:Engineered miR-31 exosomes are an ideal disease pathophysiology-initiated RNAi therapeutic agent for diabetic wounds.Jinghuan Huang Muyu Yu Wenjing Yin Bo Liang Ang Li Jingfeng Li Xiaolin Li Shichang Zhao Fang Liu 2021Bioactive Materials2021,6,9:3
15Estimating interaction between surface water and groundwater in a permafrost region of the northern Tibetan Plateau using heat tracing method显示文摘Understanding the interaction between groundwater and surface water in permafrost regions is essential to study flood frequencies and river water quality, especially in the high latitude/altitude basins. The application of heat tracing method,based on oscillating streambed temperature signals, is a promising geophysical method for identifying and quantifying the interaction between groundwater and surface water. Analytical analysis based on a one-dimensional convective-conductive heat transport equation combined with the fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing method was applied on a streambed of a mountainous permafrost region in the Yeniugou Basin, located in the upper Heihe River on the northern Tibetan Plateau. The results indicated that low connectivity existed between the stream and groundwater in permafrost regions.The interaction between surface water and groundwater increased with the thawing of the active layer. 16Climate change inferred from aeolian sediments in a lake shore environment in the central Tibetan Plateau during recent centuries显示文摘Studies of the past climate variation on the Tibetan Plateau(TP) are currently limited in number and low in density and temporal resolution. We investigated the climate condition from about 400 years before present(B.P.) in the central TP at the shore of Co(means 'lake') Nag using aeolian sediments. A 2.7-m sand profile with 57 sediment samples and six optically stimulated luminescence(OSL) samples were studied through grain-size analysis, geochemical elements and parameters, and depositional rate estimation. A previous assumption was verified that sand deposition at the shore of Lake Co Nag originated from hills to the east. Two significant wet periods between 90–140 and about 380 years B.P. were indicated by the variation of element profiles and sediment depositional rates. Aeolian activity is sensitive to variations from different seasonal changing patterns of climate factors in the study area, and aeolian sediments respond differently to climate conditions during the cold little ice age(LIA) and the warm 20 th century. Present day dry seasons of winter and spring might be much warmer and drier compared to seasons of 400 years ago although summer precipitation has increased, resulting in significantly more aeolian activity and higher depositional rate(about 6 times compared to 380–240 years ago) of sandy sediments. Aeolian problems like blown-sand deposition and desertification may be worse in a projected warming future in the central TP as well as other cold and high altitude regions. 17Conspicuous cruciform silk decorations deflect avian predator attacks显示文摘Although camouflage as an effective antipredator defense strategy is widespread across animals,highly conspicuous color patterning is not uncommon either.Many orb-web spiders adorn their webs with extra bright white silk.These conspicuous decorations are hypothesized to deter predators by warning the presence of sticky webs,camouflaging spiders,acting as a decoy,or intimidating predators by their apparent size.The decorations may also deflect predator attacks from spiders.However,empirical evidence for this deflection function remains limited.Here,we tested this hypothesis using the X-shaped silk cruciform decorations built by females of Argiope minuta.We employed visual modeling to quantify the conspicuousness of spiders and decorations from a perspective of avian predators.Then,we determined actual predation risk on spiders using naïve chicks as predators.Spider bodies and decorations were conspicuous against natural backgrounds to the avian visual systems.Chicks attacked the spider main bodies significantly less frequently on the decorated webs than on the undecorated webs,thus reducing predation risk.When both spiders and decorations were present,chicks also attacked the spider main bodies and their legs or decorations,and not randomly:they attacked the legs or decorations sooner and more frequently than they attacked the main bodies,independent of the ratio of the surface area between the decoration and spider size.Despite the increase in detectability,incorporating a conspicuous cruciform decoration to the web effectively defends the spider by diverting the attack toward the decoration or leg,but not by camouflaging or intimidating,thus,supporting the deflection hypothesis.Bingjun WANG Long YU Nina MA Zengtao ZHANG Deyong GONG Rui LIU Daiqin LI Shichang ZHANG 2022Integrative Zoology2022,17,5:1
