1Spatial distribution and source identification of heavy metal pollution in roadside surface soil:a study of Dhaka Aricha highway,Bangladesh显示文摘Introduction:In this study,metal pollution and their sources in surface soils were evaluated by pollution indices and multivariate statistical techniques in association with a geographical information system(GIS).Methods:Surface soil samples were collected in dry season from different locations of Dhaka Aricha highway and analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence(EDXRF).Results:Thirteen different metals were found in the tested samples.Pollution indices are determined by enrichment factor in an order of Zr>Sn>P>Mn>Zn>Rb>Fe>Ba>Sr>Ti>K>Ca>Al.The resulting geoaccumulation index(Igeo)value shows the following order:Sn>Zr>P>Mn>Zn>Rb>Fe>Ba>Ti>Sr>K>Ca>Al.Contamination factors(CFs)of the metals range from 1.422 to 3.979(Fe);0.213 to 1.089(Al);0.489 to 3.484(Ca);1.496 to 2.372(K);1.287 to 3.870(Ti);2.200 to 14.588(Mn);5.938 to 56.750(Zr);0.980 to 3.500(Sr);2.321 to 4.857(Rb);2.737 to 6.526(Zn);16.667 to 27.333(Sn);3.157 to 16.286(P);and 0.741 to 3.328(Ba).Pollution load index calculated from the CFs indicates that soils are strongly contaminated by Zr and Sn.Principal component analysis(PCA)of parameters exhibits three major components.R-mode cluster analysis reveals three distinct groups in both site and metal basis clustering that shows a similar pattern with the PCA.Conclusions:These results might be helpful for future monitoring of further increase of heavy metal concentrations in surface soils along highways.Fahad Ahmed A.N.M.Fakhruddin M.D.Toufick Imam Nasima Khan Tanzir Ahmed Khan Md.Mahfuzur Rahman Abu Tareq Mohammad Abdullah 2016Ecological Processes2016,5,1:11
2Wastewater degradation by iron/copper nanoparticles and the microorganism growth rate显示文摘Nowadays, trends in wastewater treatment by zero-valent iron(ZVI) were turned to use bimetallic NZVI particles by planting another metal onto the ZVI surface to increase its reactivity. Nano size zero-valent iron/copper(NZVI/Cu0) bimetallic particles were synthesized in order to examine its toxicity effects on the wastewater microbial life, kinetics of phosphorus, ammonia stripping and the reduction of chemical oxygen demand(COD).Various concentrations of NZVI/Cu0 and operation conditions both aerobic and anaerobic were investigated and compared with pure NZVI experiment. The results showed that addition10 mg/L of NZVI/Cu0 significantly increased the numbers of bacteria colonies under anaerobic condition, conversely it inhibited bacteria activity with the presence of oxygen. Furthermore,the impact of nanoparticles on ammonia stripping and phosphorus removal was also linked to the emitted iron ions electrons. It was found that dosing high concentration of bimetallic NZVI/Cu0 has a negative effect on ammonia stripping regardless of the aeration condition. In comparison to control, dosing only 10 mg/L NZVI/Cu0, the phosphorus removal increased sharply both under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, these outcomes were obtained as a result of complete dissolution of bimetallic nanoparticles which formed copper-iron oxides components that are attributed to increasing the phosphorus adsorption rate.Tareq W.M.Amen Osama Eljamal Ahmed M.E.Khalil Nobuhiro Matsunaga 2018Journal of Environmental Sciences2018,30,12:5
3Non-invasive diagnosis of H pylori infection: Evaluation of serological tests with and without current infection marker CIM显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the performance of commercially available immunochromatographic (ICT) and immunoblot tests covering the current infection marker CIM and conventional ELISA for the diagnosis of H pylori infection in adult dyspeptic patients. METHODS:Consecutive non-treated dyspeptic patients undergoing diagnostic endoscopy were tested for H pylori infection by culture, rapid urease test, and histology of gastric biopsy specimens. Serum from 61 H pylori infected and 21 non-infected patients were tested for anti-H pylori IgG antibodies by commercial ELISA (AccuBindTM ELISA, Monobind, USA), ICT (Assure H pylori Rapid Test, Genelabs Diagnostics, Singapore), and immunoblot (Helico Blot 2.1, Genelabs Diagnostics, Singapore) assays. ICT and immunoblot kits cover CIM among other parameters and their performance with and without CIM was evaluated separately. RESULTS:Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy of ELISA were 96.7%, 42.8%, 83.1%, 81.8%, and 82.9%, of ICT were 90.1%, 80.9%, 93.2%, 73.9%, and 87.8%, of ICT with CIM were 88.5%, 90.4%, 96.4%, 73.0%, and 89.0%, of immunoblot were 98.3%, 80.9%, 93.7%, 94.4%, and 93.9%, and of immunoblot with CIM were 98.3%, 90.4%, 96.7%, 95.0%, and 96.3%, respectively. CONCLUSION:Immunoblot with CIM had the best performance. 4Biochar from vegetable wastes:agro-environmental characterization显示文摘Considering the global issue of vegetable wastes generation and its impact on the environment and resources,this study evalu-ated the conversion of four largely produced vegetable wastes(cauliflower,cabbage,banana peels and corn cob residues)into biochar.Each waste was tested individually and as a combined blend to assess feedstock influences on biochar properties.In addition,various pyrolysis temperatures ranging from 300℃ to 600℃ and two particle size fractions(less than 75μm,75-125μm)were considered.Biochars were characterized for various properties that can influence the biochars’effective-ness as a soil amendment.It was found that pyrolysis temperature was the most dominant factor on biochar properties,but that individual feedstocks produced biochars with different characteristics.The biochars had characteristics that varied as follows:pH 7.2-11.6,ECE 0.15-1.00 mS cm^(−1),CEC 17-cmolc kg^(−1)andζ-potential−0.24 to−43 mV.Based on optimal values of these parameters from the literature,cauliflower and banana peels were determined to be the best feedstocks,though mixed vegetable waste also produced good characteristics.The optimum temperature for pyrolysis was around 400℃,but differed slightly(300-500℃)depending on the distinct feedstock.However,smaller particle size of biochar application was always optimal.Biochar yields were in the range of 20-30%at this temperature range,except for corn cobs which were higher.This study demonstrates that pyrolysis of dried vegetable wastes is a suitable waste valorization approach to produce biochar with good agricultural properties.Snigdhendubala Pradhan Ali H.Abdelaal Kamal Mroue Tareq Al‑Ansari Hamish R.Mackey Gordon McKay 2020Biochar2020,2,4:3
5Regime specific spillover across cryptocurrencies and the role of COVID‑19显示文摘The aim of this study is to examine the daily return spillover among 18 cryptocurrencies under low and high volatility regimes,while considering three pricing factors and the effect of the COVID-19 outbreak.To do so,we apply a Markov regime-switching(MS)vector autoregressive with exogenous variables(VARX)model to a daily dataset from 25-July-2016 to 1-April-2020.The results indicate various patterns of spillover in high and low volatility regimes,especially during the COVID-19 outbreak.The total spillover index varies with time and abruptly intensifies following the outbreak of COVID-19,especially in the high volatility regime.Notably,the network analysis reveals further evidence of much higher spillovers in the high volatility regime during the COVID-19 outbreak,which is consistent with the notion of contagion during stress periods.Syed Jawad Hussain Shahzad Elie Bouri Sang Hoon Kang Tareq Saeed 2021Financial Innovation2021,7,1:3
6Impact of the COVID‑19 outbreak on the US equity sectors:Evidence from quantile return spillovers显示文摘The aim of this study is to examine the extreme return spillovers among the US stock market sectors in the light of the COVID-19 outbreak.To this end,we extend the now-traditional Diebold-Yilmaz spillover index to the quantiles domain by building networks of generalized forecast error variance decomposition of a quantile vector autoregressive model specifically for extreme returns.Notably,we control for common movements by using the overall stock market index as a common factor for all sectors and uncover the effect of the COVID-19 outbreak on the dynamics of the network.The results show that the network structure and spillovers differ considerably with respect to the market state.During stable times,the network shows a nice sectoral clustering structure which,however,changes dramatically for both adverse and beneficial market conditions constituting a highly connected network structure.The pandemic period itself shows an interesting restructuring of the network as the dominant clusters become more tightly connected while the rest of the network remains well separated.The sectoral topology thus has not collapsed into a unified market during the pandemic.Syed Jawad Hussain Shahzad Elie Bouri Ladislav Kristoufek Tareq Saeed 2021Financial Innovation2021,7,1:2

10Endogenous fungal endophthalmitis:risk factors,clinical course,and visual outcome in 13 patients显示文摘AIM:To analyze the risk factors,ophthalmological features,treatment modalities and their effect on the visual outcome in patients with endogenous fungal endophthalmitis(EFE).METHODS:Data retrieved from the medical files included age at presentation to the uveitis clinic,gender,ocular symptoms and their duration before presentation,history of fever,eye affected,anatomical diagnosis and laboratory evidence of fungal infection.Medical therapy recorded included systemic antifungal therapy and its duration,use of intravitreal antifungal agents and use of oral/intravitreal steroids.Surgical procedures and the data of ophthalmologic examination at presentation and at last follow-up were also collected.RESULTS:Included were 13 patients(20 eyes,mean age 58 y).Ten patients presented after gastrointestinal or urological interventions and two presented after organ transplantation.In one patient,there was no history of previous intervention.Diagnostic vitrectomy was performed in 16 eyes(80%)and vitreous cultures were positive in 10 of the vitrectomized eyes(62.5%).In only 4 patients(31%),blood cultures were positive.All patients received systemic antifungal therapy.Sixteen eyes(80%)received intravitreal antifungal agent with voriconazole being the most commonly used.Visual acuity(VA)improved from 0.9±0.9 at initial exam to 0.5±0.8 logMAR at last followup(P=0.03).A trend of greater visual improvement was noted in favor of eyes treated with oral steroids(±intravitreal dexamethasone)than eyes that were not treated with steroids.The most common complication was maculopathy.Twelve eyes(60%)showed no ocular complications.CONCLUSION:High index of suspicion in patients with inciting risk factors is essential because of the low yield of blood cultures and the good general condition of patients at presentation.Visual prognosis is improved with the prompt institution of systemic and intravitreal pharmacotherapy and the immediate surgical intervention.Oral±local steroids could be considered in cases of prolonged or marked inflammatory responses in order to hasten control of inflammation and limit ocular complications.Jamel Corredores Itzhak Hemo Tareq Jaouni Zohar Habot-Wilner Michal Kramer Shiri Shulman Haneen Jabaly-Habib Ala'a Al-Talbishi Michael Halpert Edward Averbukh Jaime Levy Iris Deitch-Harel Radgonde Amer 2021International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2021,14,1:1
