| 1 | Pseudo-particle simulation of multi-scale heterogeneity in fluidization显示文摘Fluidization is a process of wide application, but its dynamic behavior is not well understood because of its multi-scale heterogeneity and regime multiplicity which are difficult to simulate in traditional numerical methods. By discretizing the fluid phase into a large number of interactive simple particles, which can incorporate many-body moving boundaries easily, pseudo-particle modeling (PPM) has re-produced reasonable radial and axial heterogeneity on macro-scale as well as solids clustering and fluid flows on meso- and micro-scales. | 2 | Application of fiber Bragg grating based strain sensor in pipeline vortex-induced vibration measurement显示文摘The vortex-induced vibrations(VIV)is an important topic of study in many different scientific and engineering fields.While VIV can be of benefit in some cases,oftentimes,it is an undesirable phenomenon that can be quite dangerous.In particular for offshore pipelines,VIV can lead to fatiguing of the pipe structure and can cause disastrous consequences if left unchecked.A number of different methods have been applied to the measurement of VIV,especially for the elongated,thin cylindrical structures.The use of fiber optic fiber Bragg gratings(FBGs)in particular has gained popularity over the recent years due to their distinct properties.However,FBGs are also very fragile and are susceptible to failure when placed in harsh environments without protection.In this paper,56 FBGs encapsulated in stainless steel tubes were applied to the measurement of VIV in a28-m model pipeline under controlled and uncontrolled conditions.Tests show that the encapsulated sensors possessed good sensitivity as well as fatigue life(>80000 cycles).The measurements from FBGs were also high enough to allow frequency domain analysis of the pipeline VIV under the two conditions.The authors conclude that the encapsulated FBGs are a viable tool for the study of VIV in pipeline structures. | REN Liang JIA ZiGuang HO Michael Siu Chun YI TingHua LI HongNan | 2014 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2014,57,9: | 9 |
| 3 | Road Centrality and Landscape Spatial Patterns in Wuhan Metropolitan Area,China显示文摘Road network is a corridor system that interacts with surrounding landscapes,and understanding their interaction helps to develop an optimal plan for sustainable transportation and land use.This study investigates the relationships between road centrality and landscape patterns in the Wuhan Metropolitan Area,China.The densities of centrality measures,including closeness,betweenness,and straightness,are calculated by kernel density estimation(KDE).The landscape patterns are characterized by four landscape metrics,including percentage of landscape(PLAND),Shannon′s diversity index(SHDI),mean patch size(MPS),and mean shape index(MSI).Spearman rank correlation analysis is then used to quantify their relationships at both landscape and class levels.The results show that the centrality measures can reflect the hierarchy of road network as they associate with road grade.Further analysis exhibit that as centrality densities increase,the whole landscape becomes more fragmented and regular.At the class level,the forest gradually decreases and becomes fragmented,while the construction land increases and turns to more compact.Therefore,these findings indicate that the ability and potential applications of centrality densities estimated by KDE in quantifying the relationships between roads and landscapes,can provide detailed information and valuable guidance for transportation and land-use planning as well as a new insight into ecological effects of roads. | LIU Yaolin WANG Huimin JIAO Limin LIU Yanfang HE Jianhua AI Tinghua | 2015 | Chinese Geographical Science2015,25,4: | 9 |

| 5 | How does the motor relearning program improve neurological function of brain ischemia monkeys?显示文摘The motor relearning program can significantly improve various functional disturbance induced by ischemic cerebrovascular diseases. However, its mechanism of action remains poorly understood. In injured brain tissues, glial fibrillary acidic protein and neurofilament protein changes can reflect the condition of injured neurons and astrocytes, while vascular endothelial growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor changes can indicate angiogenesis. In the present study, we induced ischemic brain injury in the rhesus macaque by electrocoagulation of the M1 segment of the right middle cerebral artery. The motor relearning program was conducted for 60 days from the third day after model establishment. Immunohistochemistry and single-photon emission CT showed that the numbers of glial fibrillary acidic protein-, neurofilament protein-, vascular endothelial growth factor- and basic fibroblast growth factor-positive cells were significantly increased in the infarcted side compared with the contralateral hemisphere following the motor relearning program. Moreover, cerebral blood flow in the infarcted side was significantly improved. The clinical rating scale for stroke was used to assess neurological function changes in the rhesus macaque following the motor relearning program. Results showed that motor function was improved, and problems with consciousness, self-care ability and balance function were significantly ameliorated. | 6 | Evaluation of earthquake-induced structural damages by wavelet transform显示文摘The dynamic behavior of inelastic structures during an earthquake is a complicated non-stationary process that is affected by the ran- dom characteristics of seismic ground motions. The conventional Fourier analysis describes the feature of a dynamic process by decom- posing the signal into infinitely long sine and cosine series, which loses all time-located information. However, both time and frequency localizations are necessary for the analysis of an evolutionary spectrum of non-stationary processes. In this paper, an analytical approach for seismic ground motions is developed by applying the wavelet transform, which focuses on the energy input to the structure. The procedure of identification of the instantaneous modal parameters based on the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is given in detail. And then, a novel method using the auto-regressive moving average (ARMA), called ''prediction extension', is presented to remedy the edge effect during the numerical computation of the CWT. The effectiveness of the method is verified by the use of the benchmark model developed by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Finally, a scale model with three-storey reinforced concrete frame-share wall structure is made and tested on a shaking table to investigate the relation between the dynamic properties of structures and energy accumulation and its change rates during the earthquake. | 7 | JNK3 involvement in nerve cell apoptosis and neurofunctional recovery after traumatic brain injury显示文摘Increasing evidence has revealed that the activation of the JNK pathway participates in apoptosis of nerve cells and neurological function recovery after traumatic brain injury. However, which genes in the JNK family are activated and their role in traumatic brain injury remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, in situ end labeling, reverse transcription-PCR and neurological function assessment were adopted to investigate the alteration of JNK1, JNK2 and JNK3 gene expression in cerebral injured rats, and their role in cell apoptosis and neurological function restoration. Results showed that JNK3 expression significantly decreased at 1 and 6 hours and 1 and 7 days post injury, but that JNK1 and JNK2 expression remained unchanged. In addition, the number of apoptotic nerve cells surrounding the injured cerebral cortex gradually reduced over time post injury. The Neurological Severity Scores gradually decreased over 1, 3, 5, 14 and 28 days post injury. These findings suggested that JNK3 expression was downregulated at early stages of brain injury, which may be associated with apoptosis of nerve cells. | 8 | Genomic DNA methylation patterns in bovine preim-plantation embryos derived from in vitro fertilization显示文摘By using the approach of immunofluorescence staining with an antibody against 5-methylcytosine (5MeC), the present study detected the DNA methylation patterns of bovine zygotes and preimplanta-tion embryos derived from oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM), in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo in vitro culture (IVC). The results showed that: a) paternal-specific demethylation occurred in 61.5% of the examined zygotes, while 34.6% of them showed no demethylation; b) decreased methylation level was observed after the 8-cell stage and persisted through the morula stage, however methylation levels were different between blastomeres within the same embryos; c) at the blastocyst stage, the methyla-tion level was very low in inner cell mass, but high in trophectoderm cells. | 11 | A progressive method for the collapse of river representation considering geographical characteristics显示文摘During map generalization,the collapse of geometry,which is also called geometric dimension reduction,is a basic generalization operation.When the map scale decreases,rivers with long,shallow polygonal shapes,usually require their dual-line representation to be collapsed to a single line.This study presents a new algorithm called superpixel river collapse(SURC)to convert dual-line rivers to single-line rivers based on raster data.In this method,dual-line rivers are first segmented at different levels of detail using a superpixel method called simple linear iterative clustering.Then,by connecting the edge midpoints and centre of mass of each superpixel,single-line rivers are preliminarily generated from dual-line rivers.Finally,an interpolation algorithm called polynomial approximation with an exponential kernel is applied to maintain the uniform distribution of the feature points of single-line rivers at different levels of detail(LOD).The presented method can progressively collapse the river during scale transformation to support the LOD representation in a highly sensitive way.The results show that compared with three typical thinning algorithms,the SURC method can generate smooth single-line rivers from dual-line rivers considering different river widths while effectively avoiding burrs and fractured intersections. | Yilang Shen Tinghua Ai Jingzhong Li Lina Huang Wende Li | 2020 | International Journal of Digital Earth2020,13,12: | 3 |
| 12 | Poststroke DNA immunization against neurite growth inhibitors is beneficial to the recovery from local cerebral ischemia in rats显示文摘BACKGROUND: Inhibitory signals, i.e. neurite growth inhibitors (NGIs), presenting on central nervous system (CNS) myelin have been shown to play a crucial role in inhibiting lesioned axonal sprouting and leading to less functional recovery. Vaccines targeting NGIs may provide multifactorial protection against brain insults by overcoming the inhibitory effects of these NGIs and boosting the body's immune repair mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of poststroke DNA immunization against NGIs on the rehabilitation for sensorimotor function of rat models of local cerebral ischemia. DESIGN: Completely randomized grouping design, and controlled experiment. SETTING: Brain Injury Research Laboratory, Department of Neurosurgery, National Neuroscience Institute, Singapore. MATERIALS: Sixty adult male Sprague-Dawley rats ranging in age from 45 to 120 days and in weight from 180 to 250 grams were provided by Animal Center of Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore. pcDNA3.1(+)-neurite growth inhibitors (pcDNA-NGIs) a gift was provided by Dr. Xiao from Department of Clinical Research, Singapore General Hospital, Singapore. METHODS: The experiment was carried out at Brain Injury Research Laboratory, Department of Neurosurgery, National Neuroscience Institute, Singapore from August 2003 to April 2005. ①The involved rats were randomized into 3 groups: pcDNA-NGIs group (group A), pcDNA3.1 (+) group (group B) and model group (group C), with 20 rats in each group. Left focal cerebral ischemia (FCI) was permanently induced through middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) with the assistance of an operating microscope. Successful MCAO was determined by a 20% decrease to baseline in the ipsilateral cerebral blood flow. 100 μg of pcDNA-NGIs eluted in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was intramuscularly injected into the tibial muscle once a week after MCAO for 6 weeks in group A. As control, pcDNA3.1 (+) was also administrated in the same way in group B and nothing was administrated in group C. ② The modified neurological severity score (mNSS), a composite of motor, sensory, reflex and balance tests, was used to test the sensorimotor deficit. The mNSS was graded on a scale of 0–18, i.e. normal score was 0, maximal deficit score was 18, and 1 point was warded for the inability to perform the tasks or the lack of a tested reflex. ③ The newly generated axons of corticorubral projection were traced by stereotaxic guided injection of 100 g/L biotinylated dextran amine. Rats were sacrificed two weeks after tracing, and cryostat coronal sections of midbrains (30 μm) were reacted to BDA according to the manufacturer's instruction by the free-floating method. Images were captured on a DM RXA2 LEICA Microscope with a Spot Digital Camera system (Germany), and the numbers of labeled axons on the denervated side in four standard coronal sections including the red nucleus were manually quantified. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ① The number of newly generated axons of corticorubral projection. ②The improvement in sensorimotor deficit. RESULTS: All the involved 60 rats entered the stage of final analysis. ① The number of newly generated axons of corticorubral projection of rats: Only ipsilateral axons of CRP were noted with little evidence of fibers crossing to the contralateral red nucleus in rats of groups B and C. More BDA-positive fibers crossing the midline and terminating in the contralateral red nucleus in appropriate target areas mirroring thenon-differentiated red nucleus were found in rats of group A. Quantitative analysis showed that BDA-labeled axons in the denervated side of rats in group A were more than those in group B (P < 0.05). ② Improvement in sensorimotor deficit of rats: At 2 weeks after immunization, significant improvement in sensorimotor deficit was found in rats of group A. There were significant differences of improvement in sensorimotor deficit of rats between group A and group B or group C at 12 and 14 weeks after immunization (P < 0.05).
