5Exploring the impact of a coordinated variable speed limit control on congestion distribution in freeway显示文摘Over the past few decades,urban freeway congestion has been highly recognized as a serious and worsening traffic problem in the world.To relieve freeway congestion,several active traffic and demand management(ATDM) methods have been developed.Among them,variable speed limit(VSL) aims at regulating freeway mainline flow upstream to meet existing capacity and to harmonize vehicle speed.However,congestion may still be inevitable even with VSL implemented due to extremely high demand in actual practice.This study modified an existing VSL strategy by adding a new local constraint to suggest an achievable speed limit during the control period.As a queue is a product of the congestion phenomenon in freeway,the incentives of a queue build-up in the applied coordinated VSL control situation were analyzed.Considering a congestion occurrence(a queue build-up)characterized by a sudden and sharp speed drop,speed contours were utilized to demonstrate the congestion distribution over a whole freeway network in various scenarios.Finally,congestion distributions found in both VSL control and non-VS control situations for various scenarios were investigated to explore the impact of the applied coordinated VSL control on the congestion distribution.An authentic stretch of Whitemud Drive(WMD),an urban freeway corridor in Edmonton,Alberta,Canada,was employed to implement this modified coordinated VSL control strategy;and a calibrated micro-simulation VISSIM model(model functions) was applied as the substitute of the real-world traffic system to test the above mentioned performance.The exploration task in this study can lay the groundwork for future research on how to improve the presented VSL control strategy for achieving the congestion mitigation effect on freeway.Jing Cao Dawei Hu Ying Luo Tony Z.Qiu Zhuanglin Ma 2015Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering(English Edition)2015,2,3:0
6Mechanisms of prostate carcinogenesis and its prevention by a γ-tocopherolrich mixture of tocopherols in TRAMP mice显示文摘Tocopherols belong to a subgroup of the vitamin E family. Dietary feeding of a γ-tocopherol-rich mixture of tocopherols(γ-Tm T) inhibits prostate tumorigenesis in TRAMP mice. In this study, we aimed to investigate mechanisms of prostate carcinogenesis in TRAMP mice by identifying differentially expressed pathways and effects of γ-Tm T on these pathways. Eight-week-old TRAMP and age-matched C57BL/6 mice were administered either 600 mg/kg of γ-Tm T or a control vehicle via oral gavage. Twelve hours after dosing, prostate tissues were collected for RNA extraction. Whole genome mouse microarrays were used to examine gene expression profiles. The expression of the selected genes were validated using quantitative PCR. Thousands of genes and various pathways were altered in the prostates of TRAMP mice. Compared to C57BL/6 mice, TRAMP mice exhibited enhanced proliferation, suppressed expression of antioxidant and phase II detoxification enzymes, and metabolic reprogramming in the prostate. γ-Tm T differentially regulated the gene expression profiles of TRAMP and C57BL/6 mice, with only a small percentage of genes overlapping. γ-Tm T inhibited genes involved in proliferation and glucose metabolism and induced several antioxidant/phase II detoxification genes in TRAMP mice. γ-Tm T modulates multiple aberrant pathways in the prostate of TRAMP mice, which might represent important mechanisms for prostate cancer prevention.Ying Huang Zhengyuan Su Tienyuan Wu Constance Lay-Lay Saw Ah-Ng Tony Kong 2016Journal of Chinese Pharmaceutical Sciences2016,25,3:0
7Risk Perception and Knowledge in Fire Risk Reduction in a Dong Minority Rural Village in China: A Health-EDRM Education Intervention Study显示文摘Fire is one of the major disasters in rural communities but evidence of the effectiveness of education interventions against fire risks is limited. This was a 2-year study assessed the effectiveness of face-to-face Health Emergency and Disaster Risk Management(HealthEDRM) education interventions for raising fire risk reduction knowledge in a fire-prone rural ethnic minority community. The study was conducted in various pre-set time points of an intervention-based project in a Dongbased community in Nanjiang Village, Guizhou Province in 2015 and 2016 to increase knowledge among the villagers about how to reduce general-and electrical-fire risks. Pre-and post-intervention questionnaires were used to evaluate the effectiveness of increasing fire risk-related knowledge through these interventions, immediately after the 2015 and 2016 interventions, and 17 months after the 2015 intervention. The knowledge of using fire blanket,recalling the correct emergency telephone number,unplugging unused electrical appliances, and not using water to extinguish electrical fires had immediately improved after the interventions. Subjects demonstrated a better understanding that fire blankets can fight a blaze if used appropriately, and that knowledge was sustained for 17 months. The interventions were effective in improving fire prevention and response knowledge.
