| 1 | Disentangling the effects of topography and space on the distributions of dominant species in a subtropical forest显示文摘Topography and space are two important factors determining plant species assemblages in forest communities.Quantification of the contribution of these two factors in determining species distribution helps us to evaluate their relative importance in determining species assemblages.This study aims to disentangle the effect of topography and space on the distributions of 14 dominant species in a subtropical mixed forest.Spearman correlation analysis and the torustranslation test were used to test the species–habitat associations.Variation partitioning was used to quantify the relative contributions of topography and space at three sampling scales and three life stages.Correlation analyses and torus-translation tests showed species abundance was mostly correlated with topographic wetness index,vertical distance from the channel network and convexity.Variation partitioning showed that pure topography,pure space and spatially structured topography explained about 2.1 %,41.2 % and 13.8 %of the variation in species distributions,respectively.For nine species,total topography fractions peaked in 20 m quadrats.For ten species,the pure space fractions peaked in 50 m quadrats.For many species,the total topography fraction andthe pure space fraction were larger for the most abundant life stages,which reflected the importance of sampling effect.However,some cases did not follow this trend suggesting that the effects of ecological processes such as habitat filtering,density dependence or dispersal limitation may exceed the sampling effects.In conclusion,we found that spatially structured topography and pure space primarily shaped the distribution of dominant tree species.Furthermore,their effects were both scale- and life stage-dependent. | Qinggang Wang Yaozhan Xu Zhijun Lu Dachuan Bao Yili Guo Junmeng Lu Kuihan Zhang Haibo Liu Hongjie Meng Xiujuan Qiao Handong Huang Mingxi Jiang | 2014 | Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,35: | 16 |

| 16 | Mechanisms of antinociceptive effects of ouabain in combination with neostigmine in the rat显示文摘BACKGROUND: It has been previously shown that intrathecal administration of either ouabain or neostigmine can produce antinociceptive effects. Moreover, ouabain and neostigmine are differently associated with acetylcholine. OBJECTIVE: It has been hypothesized that intrathecal administration of ouabain, in combination with neostigmine, can produce antinociceptive synergistic effects. Atropine, as a competitive antagonist, was pre-injected to verify the mechanisms of action. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: This study was a randomized, controlled, animal experiment, performed at the State Key Laboratory of Oncology in Southern China between May 2006 and February 2007. MATERIALS: A total of 102 healthy, adult, Sprague Dawley rats were included. Ouabain and neostigmine (Sigma, USA), as well as atropine (Tanabe Seiyaku, Japan), were also used. METHODS: Varied doses of ouabain, neostigmine, and a combination of the two were intrathecally injected into rats. Six rats were allotted for each dose group. Intrathecal pretreatment with atropine was tested 10 minutes prior to intrathecal administration of neostigmine or the combination of ouabain and neostigmine. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Tail-flick tests were performed to measure tail-flick latency (seconds) prior to and after administration. The response in the tail-flick test was expressed as the percentage of maximum possible effect (% MPE), where % MPE = [tail-flick latency after administration (seconds) -mean baseline value for tail-flick latency]/[10 seconds - the mean baseline value for tail-flick latency (seconds)] × 100%. RESULTS: Rat spinal intrathecal administration of either ouabain or neostigmine alone produced antinociceptive effects in a dose-dependent manner. Intrathecally administration of neostigmine (0.05, 0.1, 0.3 μg ) in combination with ouabain (1 μg ) produced enhanced antinociceptive effects, with a % MPE of 29%, 78%, and 95%, respectively (P < 0.05). Intrathecally administration of 0.3 μg neostigmine (% MPE: 45%), in combination with 1 μg ouabain (% MPE: 27%) produced potent antinociceptive effects (% MPE: 95%). Intrathecally pre-injected atropine antagonized the antinociceptive effects of neostigmine (3 μg), or a combination of ouabain (1 μg) and neostigmine (0.3 μg) (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Rat spinal intrathecal administration of either ouabain or neostigmine alone produced dose-dependent antinociceptive effects. Ouabain enhanced the antinociceptive effects of neostigmine. Atropine antagonized the antinociceptive effects of neostigmine or the combination of ouabain and neostigmine. | 18 | Anomalous phenomena in DC–ULF geomagnetic daily variation registered three days before the 12 May 2008 Wenchuan M_S 8.0 earthquake显示文摘The hourly data of the vertical Z and the horizontal H components of 37 ground-based DC-ULF geomagnetic stations are examined during 20 April-12 May 2008. On 9 May 2008, three days before the Wenchuan MS 8.0 shock, anomalies-a double low-point and a decreased amplitude-are registered on the curves of the Z component at 25 stations in a large-scale area surrounding the Wenchuan epicentral area. The H component shows none of the double low-point phenomenon but does exhibit a reduced magnitude at the same time. The geomagnetic index Kp is also examined and indicates that the anomalies appear at a solar quiet period. The appearing time shift(Tzs) between the first low-point on May 9 and the minimum point occurring time of May 1-5, 2008 is also checked.The results show that Tzs is on the order of 1-2 hours earlier or later than usual and there is a 2-6 hours’ gap between these two lowpoints. However, there is still a transition area which includes the epicenter where Tzs=0. Variation amplitude examined on vertical Z increases as the distance from the epicenter decreases. An Earth-air-ionosphere model has been employed to investigate a possible mechanism of this phenomenon and positive results have been unexpectedly attained. | 20 | Alternations in the gut microbiota and metabolome with newly diagnosed unstable angina显示文摘Gut microbiota plays an important role in coronary heart disease, but its compositional and functional changes in unstable angina(UA) remain unexplored. We performed metagenomic sequencing of 133 newly diagnosed UA patients and 133 sex-and age-matched controls, and profiled the fecal and plasma metabolomes in 30 case-control pairs. The alpha diversity of gut microbiota was increased in UA patients:the adjusted odds ratios(ORs) per standard deviation increase in Shannon and Simpson indices were 1.30(95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.70) and 1.36(1.05-1.81), respectively. Two common species(depleted Klebsiella pneumoniae and enriched Streptococcus parasanguinis;P ≤ 0.002) and three rare species(depleted Weissella confusa, enriched Granulicatella adiacens and Erysipelotrichaceae bacterium 6_1_45;P ≤ 0.005) were associated with UA. The UA-associated gut microbiota was depleted in the pathway of Lphenylalanine degradation(P = 0.001), primarily contributed by Klebsiella pneumoniae. Consistently, we found increased circulating phenylalanine in UA patients(OR = 2.76 [1.17-8.16]). Moreover, Streptococcus parasanguinis was negatively correlated with fecal citrulline(Spearman's r_(s)=-0.470, P = 0.009), a metabolite depleted in UA patients(OR = 0.26 [0.08-0.63]).
