| 1 | Synthesis of Porous NiO Nanocrystals with Controllable Surface Area and Their Application as Supercapacitor Electrodes显示文摘We report a facile way to grow various porous NiO nanostructures including nanoslices,nanoplates,and nanocolumns,which show a structure-dependence in their specific charge capacitances.The formation of controllable porosity is due to the dehydration and re-crystallization of β-Ni(OH)_(2) nanoplates synthesized by a hydrothermal process.Thermogravimetric analysis shows that the decomposition temperature of the β-Ni(OH)_(2) nanostructures is related to their morphology.In electrochemical tests,the porous NiO nanostructures show stable cycling performance with retention of specific capacitance over 1000 cycles.Interestingly,the formation of nanocolumns by the stacking of β-Ni(OH)_(2) nanoslices/plates favors the creation of small pores in the NiO nanocrystals obtained after annealing,and the surface area is over five times larger than that of NiO nanoslices and nanoplates.Consequently,the specific capacitance of the porous NiO nanocolumns(390 F/g)is significantly higher than that of the nanoslices(176 F/g)or nanoplates(285 F/g)at a discharge current of 5 A/g.This approach provides a clear illustration of the process-structure-property relationship in nanocrystal synthesis and potentially offers strategies to enhance the performance of supercapacitor electrodes. | Xiaojun Zhang Wenhui Shi Jixin Zhu Weiyun Zhao Jan Ma Subodh Mhaisalkar Tuti Lim Maria Yanhui Yang Hua Zhang Huey Hoon Hng Qingyu Yan | 2010 | Nano Research2010,3,9: | 24 |
| 2 | Alfalfa-containing diets alter luminal microbiota structure and short chain fatty acid sensing in the caecal mucosa of pigs显示文摘Background: Pork produced by outdoor-reared pigs raised mostly on alfalfa pastures attracts increasing population of consumer from most of the world. In China, pigs were raised with alfalfa-containing diets to seek for good quality pork.However, the influence of dietary alfalfa involving high level of insoluble dietary fiber(IDF) on pig intestinal luminal microbiota composition remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of alfalfa on luminal microbiota and short chain fatty acids(SCFA) production, and gene expressions involved in SCFA sensing, transporting and absorbing in pig caecal mucosa.Results: Twenty-four growing pigs were randomly allotted to four diets containing 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% alfalfa meal for a 28-d experiment. Ingestion of alfalfa meal-contained diets significantly increased the ratio of body weight gain to feed consumption. Illumina MiS eq sequencing of the V3 region of the 16 S r RNA genes showed that alfalfa-containing diet significantly decreased the relative abundance of genera Turicibacter, Acidiphilium, Paracoccus, Propionibacterium,Corynebacterium, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, and Staphylococcus, and increased the relative abundance of genera Lachnospira, Marvinbryantia, and Desulfovibrio in the caecal digesta. Butyrate concentration was significantly increased in the hindgut by the supplementation of alfalfa meal in diets. | 3 | High-concentrate feeding upregulates the expression of inflammation-related genes in the ruminal epithelium of dairy cattle显示文摘Background: The objective of this study was to characterize the m RNA expression profile related to rumen epithelial inflammation through the in vivo and in vitro experiments. In the in vivo experiment, rumen papillae were col ected from four dairy cows adapted to either a 40 %(LC) or 70 %(HC) concentrate feeds for microarray analysis.Results: Results showed that 245 differentially expressed genes(DEGs) were detected in the cows fed the HC relative to the LC diet. The DEGs were first annotated, and results revealed that the expression of inflammationrelated genes, including IL-1β, IL-2, IL-22, CCL19, CCL8, CX3CR1, CXCL6, INHBE, LEPR, PRL, and TNFRSF9 found in the cytokine-cytokine receptor pathway were up-regulated in the HC-fed cows, indicating local inflammation in the rumen epithelium was triggered. The expression of IL-1β, IL-2, and IL-6 was further validated by q RT-PCR. To demonstrate whether there were relationships between cytokine m RNA expression and ruminal factors(p H and LPS),the isolated ruminal epithelial cells were cultured in vitro. | 4 | Energy flux characteristics of seismic waves at the interface between soil layers with different saturations显示文摘Based on the multiphase poroelasticity theory describing the propagation of waves in the unsaturated fluid-saturated porous medium,the reflection and transmission coefficients of the seismic waves at the interface between soil layers with different saturations are obtained.Our unsaturated model consists of a deformable skeleton in which two compressible and viscous fluids(i.e.,water and gas)flow in the interstices.Three compressional waves(i.e.,P1,P2,and P3 waves)and one shear(i.e.,S wave)wave exist in the unsaturated soils.The expressions for the energy ratios of the various reflected and transmitted waves at the interface during the transmission and reflection processes are presented in explicit forms accordingly.At last,numerical computations are performed and the results obtained are respectively depicted graphically.The variation of the energy ratios with the incident angle,wave frequency and saturation degrees of the upper and lower soil layers is illustrated in detail.The calculation results show that the allocation of incident seismic waves at the interface is influenced not only by the angle and frequency of the incident seismic waves,but also by the saturations of the upper and lower soil layers.It is also verified that,at the interface,the sum of energy ratios of the reflected and transmitted waves is approximately equal to unity as was expected.This study is of importance to several fields such as geotechnical engineering,seismology,and geophysics. | CHEN WeiYun CHEN GuoXing XIA TangDai CHEN Wei | 2014 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2014,57,10: | 10 |
| 5 | An increase in corn resistant starch decreases protein fermentation and modulates gut microbiota during in vitro cultivation of pig large intestinal inocula显示文摘High-protein diet could cause an increase in protein fermentation in the large intestine, leading to an increased production of potentially detrimental metabolites. We hypothesized that an increase in corn resistant starch content may attenuate the protein fermentation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of resistant starch on protein fermentation by inocula from large intestine of pigs using in vitro cultivation. Fermentation patterns were analyzed during a 24-h incubation of cecal and colonic digesta with varying corn resistant starch contents, using casein protein as sole nitrogen source. The results showed that the concentration of short-chain fatty acids(SCFA) and cumulative gas production were significantly increased(P < 0.05), while ammonia-nitrogen(NH_3-N) and branched-chain fatty acids(BCFA), which indicated protein fermentation, decreased when the corn resistant starch levels increased(P < 0.05). The copies of total bacteria, Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus were significantly increased with the increased corn resistant starch levels after incubation(P < 0.05). The copies of the Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus in cecum were significantly higher than those in colon(P < 0.05). | 7 | Effects of galacto-oligosaccharides on growth and gut function of newborn suckling piglets显示文摘Background: Most research on galacto-oligosaccharides(GOS) has mainly focused on their prebiotic effects on the hindgut,but their beneficial effects on the small intestine(SI) have received little attention.Since jejunum is the important place to digest and absorb nutrients efficiently,optimal maturation of the jejunum is necessary for maintaining the high growth rate in the neonate.Therefore,this study investigates the effect of the early intervention with GOS on the intestinal development of the jejunum.Methods: A total of 6 litters of neonatal piglets(10 piglets per litter; Duroc × Landrace × Large White) with an average birth weight of 1.55 ± 0.05 kg received 1 of 2 treatments based on their assignment to either the control(CON) group or the GOS(GOS) group in each litter.Piglets in the GOS group were orally administrated 10 mL of a GOS solution(reaching 1 g GOS/kg body weight) per day from the age of 1 to 7 d; the piglets in the CON group were treated with the same dose of physiological saline.All piglets were weaned on d 21.On d 8 and 21 of the experimental trial,1 pig per group from each of the 6 litters was euthanized.Results: The early intervention with GOS increased the average daily gains in the third week(P < 0.05).Decreased crypt depth was also observed in the jejunum of the piglets on d 21(P < 0.05).The early intervention with GOS increased the jejunal lactase activity on d 8,maltase activity and sucrase activity on d 21(P < 0.05).In addition,the early intervention with GOS also facilitated the mRNA expression of Sodium glucose co-transporter 1(SGLT1) on d 8 and the m RNA expression of Glucose transporter type 2(GLUT2) on d 21(P < 0.05).It was further determined that GOS up-regulated the m RNA expression of preproglucagon(GCG),insulin-like growth factor 1(IGF-1),insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor(IGF-1 R) and epidermal growth factor(EGF).GOS also up-regulated the protein expression of glucagon-like peptide-2(GLP-2) and EGF in the jejunum of the piglets.Furthermore,it was also found that GOS enhanced the protein expression of ZO-1 and occludin on d 8(P < 0.05),as well as increased the mRNA expression of TGF-β and decrease the mRNA expression of IL-12(P < 0.05).Conclusions: These results indicate that GOS have a positive effect on piglet growth performance in addition to decreasing the crypt depth and enhancing functional development in jejunum of suckling piglets. | Shiyi Tian Jue Wang Hu Yu Jing Wang Weiyun Zhu | 2019 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2019,10,1: | 7 |
| 8 | Long-term effects of early antibiotic intervention on blood parameters,apparent nutrient digestibility, and fecal microbial fermentation profile in pigs with different dietary protein levels显示文摘Backgroud: This study aimed to determine the effects of early antibiotic intervention(EAI) on subsequent blood parameters, apparent nutrient digestibility, and fecal fermentation profile in pigs with different dietary crude protein(CP) levels. Eighteen litters of piglets(total 212) were randomly allocated to 2 groups and were fed a creep feed diet with or without in-feed antibiotics(olaquindox, oxytetracycline calcium and kitasamycin) from postnatal d 7 to d 42. On d 42, the piglets within the control or antibiotic group were mixed, respectively, and then further randomly assigned to a normal-(20%, 18%, and 14% CP from d 42 to d 77, d 77 to d 120, and d 120 to d 185,respectively) or a low-CP diet(16%, 14%, and 10% CP from d 42 to d 77, d 77 to d 120, and d 120 to d 185,respectively), generating 4 groups. On d 77(short-term) and d 185(long-term), serum and fecal samples were obtained for blood parameters, microbial composition and microbial metabolism analysis.Results: EAI increased(P < 0.05) albumin and glucose concentrations in low-CP diet on d 77, and increased(P < 0.05) urea concentration in normal-CP diet. On d 185, EAI increased(P < 0.05) globulin concentration in normal-CP diets, but decreased glucose concentration. For nutrient digestibility, EAI increased(P < 0.05)digestibility of CP on d 77. For fecal microbiota, the EAI as well as low-CP diet decreased(P < 0.05) E. coli count on d 77. For fecal metabolites, on d 77, EAI decreased(P < 0.05) total amines concentration but increased skatole concentration in low-CP diet. On d 185, the EAI increased(P < 0.05) putrescine and total amines concentrations in low-CP diets but reduced(P < 0.05) in the normal-CP diets. The low-CP diet decreased the concentrations of these compounds.Conclusions: Collectively, these results indicate that EAI has short-term effects on the blood parameters and fecal microbial fermentation profile. | 9 | Morphological adaptation of sheep's rumen epithelium to high-grain diet entails alteration in the expression of genes involved in cell cycle regulation, cell proliferation and apoptosis显示文摘Background: The objectives of this study were to characterize changes in the relative m RNA expression of candidate genes and proteins involved in cell cycle regulation, cell proliferation and apoptosis in the ruminal epithelium(RE) of sheep during high-grain(HG) diet adaptation.Results: Twenty sheep were assigned to four groups with five animals each. These animals were assigned to different periods of HG diet(containing 40% forage and 60% concentrate mix) feeding. The HG groups received an HG diet for7(G7, n = 5), 14(G14, n = 5) and 28 d(G28, n = 5), respectively. In contrast, the control group(CON, n = 5) was fed the forage-based diet for 28 d. The results showed that HG feeding linearly decreased(P < 0.001) the ruminal p H, and increased the concentrations of ruminal total volatile fatty acid(linear, P = 0.001), butyrate(linear, P < 0.001), valerate(quadratic P = 0.029) and the level of IGF-1(quadratic, P = 0.043) in plasma. The length(quadratic, P = 0.004), width(cubic, P = 0.015) and surface of the ruminal papillae(linear, P = 0.003) were all enlarged after 14 d of HG diet feeding.HG feeding cubically increased the number of cell layers forming the stratum corneum(SC, P < 0.001) and the thickness of the SC(P < 0.001) and stratum basale(P < 0.001). The proportion of basal layer cells in the RE decreased(linear, P < 0.001) in the G0/G1-phase, but it increased linearly(P = 0.006) in the S-phase and cubically(P = 0.004) in the G2/M-phases. The proportion of apoptosis cells in G7, G14 and G28 was reduced compared to the CON(quadratic, P <0.001). HG diet feeding linearly decreased the m RNA expression of Cyclin E1(P = 0.021) and CDK-2(P = 0.001) and(P = 0.027) the protein expression of Cyclin E1. Feeding an HG diet linearly increased the m RNA expression of genes IGFBP-2(P = 0.034) and IGFBP 5(P < 0.009), while linearly decreasing(P < 0.001) the IGFBP 3 expression. | 10 | Amino acid sensing in the gut and its mediation in gut-brain signal transduction显示文摘Animal gastrointestinal tract is not only a digestive organ, but also a nutrient sensing organ which detects luminal nutrient and thus can regulate food intake. There are many amino acid sensing receptors and transporters in the gut. Amino acids sensing by these receptors and transporters can stimulate the intestinal endocrine cells to release a variety of gut hormones. These hormones trigger a series of physiological effects via the nerve system. This review summarized the recent advance on the amino acid sensing receptors and transporters in the gastrointestinal tract, the gut hormones released from the intestinal endocrine cells and the hormones-induced signal transduction between the gut and brain. | 11 | Ileum terminal antibiotic infusion affects jejunal and colonic specific microbial population and immune status in growing pigs显示文摘Background: Compared with oral antibiotics(primarily disrupt foregut microbiota), the present study used antibiotics with ileum terminal infusion to disrupt the hindgut microbiota, and investigated the changes in specific bacterial composition and immune indexes in the jejunum and colon, and serum of growing pigs. Twelve barrows(45 d of age, 12.08 ± 0.28 kg) fitted with a T-cannula at the terminal ileum, were randomly assigned to two groups and infused either saline without antibiotics(Control) or with antibiotics(Antibiotic) at the terminal ileum. After 25 d experiment, all pigs were euthanized for analyzing bacterial composition and immune status.Results: Ileum terminal antibiotic infusion(ITAI) altered dominant bacteria counts, with a decrease in Bifidobacterium, Clostridium cluster IV and Clostridium cluster IV in the colon(P < 0.05), and an increase in Escherichia coli in the jejunum(P < 0.05). ITAI decreased(P < 0.05) short-chain fatty acids concentrations in the colon. ITAI decreased interleukin-8(IL-8), IL-10 and secretory immunoglobulin A(sIgA) concentrations, and down-regulated IL-10, Mucin-1(MUC1), Mucin-2(MUC2) and zonula occludens-1(ZO-1) mRNA expression in the colonic mucosa(P < 0.05). In the jejunal mucosa, ITAI decreased interferon-γ(IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), s IgA and IgG levels together with down-regulation of IFN-γ, TNF-α, MUC2 and ZO-1 mRNA expression(P < 0.05). Furthermore, ITAI decreased IL-10, INF-γ, TNF-α, IgA and IgG concentrations in serum(P < 0.05). Correlation analysis revealed that the change in intestinal microbiota was correlated with alterations of Ig and cytokines.Conclusions: ITAI affected jejunal and colonic specific bacteria counts, and altered some immune markers levels in the jejunal and colonic mucosa and serum. | 13 | The community structure of Methanomassiliicoccales in the rumen of Chinese goats and its response to a highgrain diet显示文摘Background: The newly proposed methanogenic order ‘Methanomassiliicoccales' is the second largest archaeal population in the rumen, second only to the Methanobrevibacter population. However, information is limited regarding the community of this new order in the rumen.Methods: This study used real-time PCR and 454 pyrosequencing to explore the abundance and community composition of Methanomassiliicoccales in the rumen of Chinese goats fed a hay(0% grain, n = 5) or a high grain(65% grain, n = 5) diet.Results: Real-time PCR analysis showed that the relative abundance of Methanomassili coccales(% of total archaea) in the goat rumen was significantly lower in the high-grain-diet group(0.5% ± 0.2%) than that in the hay-diet group(8.2% ± 1.1%, P < 0.05). The pyrosequencing results showed that a total of 208 operational taxonomic units(OTUs) were formed from ten samples at 99% sequence identity. All the sequences were identified as Methanomassiliicoccaceae at the family level, and most of the sequences(96.82% ± 1.64%) were further classified as Group 8, 9, and 10 at the Methanomassiliicoccales genus level in each sample based on the RIM-DB database. No significant differences were observed in the number of OTUs or Chao1's, Shannon's or Pielou's evenness indexes between the hay-and high-grain-diet groups(P ≥ 0.05). PCoA analysis showed that diet altered the community of Methanomassiliicoccales.At the genus level, the relative abundances of Group 10(67.25 ± 12.76 vs. 38.13 ± 15.66, P = 0.012) and Group 4(2.07 ± 1.30 vs. 0.27 ± 0.30, P = 0.035) were significantly higher in the high-grain-diet group, while the relative abundance of Group9 was significantly higher in the hay-diet group(18.82 ± 6.20 vs. 47.14 ± 17.72, P = 0.020). At the species level, the relative abundance of Group 10 sp.(67.25 ± 12.76 vs. 38.13 ± 15.66, P = 0.012) and Group 4 sp. MpT 1(2.07 ± 1.30 vs. 0.27 ± 0.30,P = 0.035) were significantly higher in the high-grain-diet group, while the relative abundance of Group 9 sp. ISO4-G1 was significantly higher in the hay-diet group(12.83 ± 3.87 vs. 42.44 ± 18.47, P = 0.022).Conclusions: Only a few highly abundant phylogenetic groups dominated within the Methanomassiliicoccales community in the rumens of Chinese goats, and these were easily depressed by high-grain-diet feeding. PY3 with an average molecular weight of 1.8×105 was demonstrated to be composed of galactose (Gal), 3,6-anhydrogalactose (3,6-AnGal), 6-OSO3-galactose (6-OSO3-Gal) and xylose (Xyl) in an approximate molar ratio of 25:15:10:1. In view of Smith degradation and me-thylation and on the basis of spectral evidence including those of IR, GC, GC-MS, and 1H and 13C NMR, the most probable repeating unit of PY3 could be proposed as [(1-3)β-D-Gal(1- 4)α-L-3,6-AnGal]3-[1-3)β-D-Gal(1-4)α-L-6-OSO3-Gal]2 with a xylose moiety at the C6 of one of every twenty-five β-D-Gal residues. | 16 | Galacto-oligosaccharides improve barrier function and relieve colonic inflammation via modulating mucosa-associated microbiota composition in lipopolysaccharides-challenged piglets显示文摘Background:Galacto-oligosaccharides(GOS)have been shown to modulate the intestinal microbiota of suckling piglets to exert beneficial effects on intestinal function.However,the modulation of intestinal microbiota and intestinal function by GOS in intestinal inflammation injury models has rarely been reported.In this study,we investigated the effects of GOS on the colonic mucosal microbiota composition,barrier function and inflammatory response of lipopolysaccharides(LPS)-challenged suckling piglets.Methods:A total of 18 newborn suckling piglets were divided into three groups,the CON group,the LPS-CON group and the LPS-GOS group.Piglets in the LPS-GOS group were orally fed with 1 g/kg body weight of GOS solution every day.On the d 14,piglets in the LPS-CON and LPS-GOS group were challenged intraperitoneally with LPS solution.All piglets were slaughtered 2 h after intraperitoneal injection and sampled.Results:We found that the colonic mucosa of LPS-challenged piglets was significantly injured and shedding,while the colonic mucosa of the LPS-GOS group piglets maintained its structure.Moreover,GOS significantly reduced the concentration of malondialdehyde(MDA)and the activity of reactive oxygen species(ROS)in the LPS-challenged suckling piglets,and significantly increased the activity of total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC).GOS significantly increased the relative abundance of norank_f_Muribaculaceae and Romboutsia,and significantly decreased the relative abundance of Alloprevotella,Campylobacter and Helicobacter in the colonic mucosa of LPS-challenged suckling piglets.In addition,GOS increased the concentrations of acetate,butyrate and total short chain fatty acids(SCFAs)in the colonic digesta of LPS-challenged suckling piglets.GOS significantly reduced the concentrations of interleukin 1β(IL-1β),interleukin 6(IL-6),tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)and cluster of differentiation 14(CD14),and the relative mRNA expression of Toll-like receptor 4(TLR4)and myeloid differentiation primary response 88(MyD88)in the LPS-challenged suckling piglets.In addition,GOS significantly reduced the relative mRNA expression of mucin2(MUC2),and significantly increased the protein expression of Claudin-1 and zonula occluden-1(ZO-1)in LPS-challenged suckling piglets.Conclusions:These results suggested that GOS can modulate the colonic mucosa-associated microbiota composition and improve the intestinal function of LPS-challenged suckling piglets. | Ren Gao Shiyi Tian Jing Wang Weiyun Zhu | 2022 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2022,13,1: | 3 |

| 18 | Comparisons of blood biochemical parameters,digestive enzyme activities and volatile fatty acid profile between Meishan and Yorkshire piglets显示文摘This study was conducted to compare physiological characteristics between Meishan and Yorkshire piglets in their early lives. Six healthy purebred Meishan sows and Yorkshire sows with close farrowing dates were used in this research. The piglets sucked their respective sow’s milk for 14 days, then they were slaughtered to collect samples of blood, pancreas, contents of stomach, jejunum, cecum, colon as well as feces for analysis of blood biochemical parameters, digestive enzymes, and volatile fatty acid(VFA). The results showed that Yorkshire piglets had higher concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) and total cholesterol(TC)(P < 0.05). Gastric lipase activity was higher in Meishan piglets but Yorkshire piglets had higher lactase activity(P < 0.05). The total VFA together with acetate and propionate in cecum and colon were higher in Meishan piglets than in Yorkshire piglets(P < 0.05),but acetate in jejunum and ratio of acetate to propionate in colon were lower in Meishan piglets than in Yorkshire piglets(P < 0.05). | 20 | Dietary citrus pectin drives more ileal microbial protein metabolism and stronger fecal carbohydrate fermentation over fructooligosaccharide in growing pigs显示文摘Fructo-oligosaccharide(FOS)and pectin are known soluble dietary fibers and can influence gut microbiota and consequently modulate gut health.To understand the differential impact patterns of pectin vs.FOS in modulating gut microbiota in the small and large intestine,an ileal-cannulated pig model was adopted to compare the temporal and spatial effects of FOS and citrus pectin(CP)on the gut microbiota.Sixteen terminal ileal-cannulated pigs were randomly divided into 2 groups and fed with a standard diet supplemented with either 3% FOS or 3% CP for 28 d.The CP group and FOS group showed different microbial composition,especially in the feces,with time and location as major factors affecting microbiota in the CP group,and with only location contribution in the FOS group.In the feces,relative to the FOS group,the CP group showed higher abundance of Christensenellaceae R-7 group and Ruminococcaceae UCG-010 and lower abundance of Mitsuokella and Olsenella(adjusted P<0.05),a higher level of shortchain fatty acids and a lower level of lactate at both d 14 and 25(P<0.05),and more copy numbers of genes encoding key enzymes related to propionate(mmd A)and butyrate(BCo AT)production and lactate utilization(Lcd A)(P<0.05),indicating a greater degree of microbial carbohydrate fermentation.In the ileum,as compared with FOS,CP increased the bacteria with high capability of fermenting amino acids,including Escherichia-Shigella and Klebsiella(adjusted P<0.05),and the expression of enzymes responsible for amino acid fermentation(i.e.lysine decarboxylase),as well as the amino acid fermentation products(cadaverine and tyramine)(P<0.05),indicating a greater degree of amino acid fermentation.Overall,our results highlight a differential dynamic impact of dietary CP vs.FOS on microbial composition and metabolism in the gut.The dietary CP has a stronger ability to promote microbial amino acid fermentation in the ileum and carbohydrate fermentation in the feces than FOS.These findings provide a new insight into the role of different fibers in gut nutrition and guidelines for the choice of fibers in manipulating gut health. | Yanan Zhang Chunlong Mu Shuai Liu Weiyun Zhu | 2022 | Animal Nutrition2022,,4: | 2 |
