1Pattern of latest tectonic motion and its dynamics for active blocks in Sichuan-Yunnan region, China显示文摘Based on the concept of 'active blocks' and spatial distribution of historical earthquakes with surface ruptures as well as major and subordinate active faults. The Sichuan-Yunnan region can be divided into four first-order blocks. They are the Markam block (I), the Sichuan-Yunnan rhombic block (II), Baoshan-Pu'er block (III), and Mizhina-Ximeng block (IV). Cut by sub-ordinate NE-trending active faults, the Sichuan-Yunnan rhombic block (II) can be further divided into two sub-blocks: the northwestern Sichuan sub-block (II1) and the middle Yunnan sub-block (II2), while the Baoshan- Pu'er block (III) can be further divided into three sub-blocks: Baoshan sub-block (III1), Jinggu sub-block (III2), and Mengla sub-block (III3). A quantitative study of offset landforms is carried out and the basic types of active faults and their long-term slip rates along the major boundaries of active blocks of different orders in the Sichuan-Yunnan region are determined, through slip vector analysis, the motion states of the active blocks are clarified and the deformation coordination on the block margins is discussed. It is suggested that the tectonic motion of the blocks in this region is a complex or superimposition of three basic types of motions: southeastward sliding, rotating on vertical axis, and uplifting. The Markam block (I), the northwestern Sichuan sub-block (II1), and middle Yunnan sub-block (II2) have a southeastward horizontal sliding rate of 1-5 mm/a, clockwise rotating angular rate of 1.4-4(/Ma, and uplifting rate of about 1 mm/a. The Baoshan-Pu'er (III) and Mizhina-Ximeng (IV) blocks have also been extensively clockwise rotated. This pattern of motion is a strain response to the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates and the localized deformation and differential slip on the block margins associated with the northward motion of the Indian Plate. 5Functional and morphological changes of the gut barrier during the restitution process after hemorrhagic shock显示文摘AIM: To investigate the functional, morphological changes of the gut barrier during the restitution process after hemorrhagic shock, and the regional differences of the large intestine and small intestine in response to ischemia/reperfusion injury.METHODS: Forty-seven Sprague-Dawley rats with body weight of 250-300 g were divided into two groups: control group (sham shock n = 5) and experimental group (n = 42).Experimental group was further divided into six groups (n = 7 each) according to different time points after the hemorrhagic shock, including 0th h group, 1st h group, 3rd h group, 6th h group, 12th h group and 24th h group. All the rats were gavaged with 2 mL of suspension of lactulose (L) (100 mg/2 mL) and mannitol (M) (50 mg/each) at the beginning and then an experimental rat model of hemorrhagic shock was set up. The specimens from jejunum, ileum and colon tissues and the blood samples from the portal vein were taken at 0, 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h after shock resuscitation, respectively. The morphological changes of the intestinal mucosa, including the histology of intestinal mucosa, the thickness of mucosa, the height of villi, the index of mucosal damage and the numbers of goblet cells, were determined by light microscope and/or electron microscope. The concentrations of the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from the portal vein blood, which reflected the gut barrier function, were examined by using Limulus test. At the same time point,to evaluate intestinal permeability, all urine was collected and the concentrations of the metabolically inactive markers such as L and M in urine were measured by using GC-9A gas chromatographic instrument.RESULTS: After the hemorrhagic shock, the mucosal epithelial injury was obvious in small intestine even at the 0th h, and it became more serious at the 1st and the 3rd h. The tissue restitution was also found after 3 h,though the injury was still serious. Most of the injured mucosal restitution was established after 6 h and completed in 24 h. Two distinct models of cell deathapoptosis and necrosis-were involved in the destruction of rat intestinal epithelial cells. The number of goblet cells on intestinal mucosa was reduced significantly from 0 to 24 h (the number from 243±13 to 157±9 for ileum, 310±19 to 248±18 for colon; r = -0.910 and -0.437 respectively,all P<0.001), which was the same with the large intestine, but the grade of injury was lighter with the values of mucosal damage index in 3 h for jejunum,ileum, and colon being 2.8, 2.6, 1.2, respectively. The mucosal thickness and the height of villi in jejunum and ileum diminished in 1 h (the average height decreased from 309±24 to 204±23 μm and 271±31 to 231±28 μm,r = -0.758 and -0.659, all P<0.001; the thickness from 547±23 to 418±28 μm and 483±45 to 364±35 μm, r= -0.898 and -0.829, all P<0.001), but there was no statistical difference in the colon (F= 0.296, P = 0.934). Compared with control group, the urine L/M ratio and the blood LPS concentration in the experimental groups raised significantly,reaching the peak in 3-6 h (L/M: control vs 3 h vs 6 h was 0.029±0.09 vs 0.063±0.012 vs 0.078±0.021, r=-0.786,P<0.001; LPS: control vs 3 h vs6 h was 0.09±0.021 vs 0.063±0.012 vs 0.25±0.023, r= -0.623, P<0.001), and it kept increasing in 24 h.CONCLUSION: The gut barrier of the rats was seriously damaged at the early phase of ischemic reperfusion injury after hemorrhagic shock, which included the injury and atrophy in intestinal mucosa and the increasing of intestinal permeability. Simultaneously, the intestinal mucosa also showed its great repairing potentiality, such as the improvement of the intestinal permeability and the recovery of the morphology at different phases after ischemic repeffusion injury. The restitution of gut barrier function was obviously slower than that of the morphology and there was no direct correlation between them.Compared with the small intestine, the large intestine had stronger potentiality against injury. 7Indicators of prognosis after liver transplantation in Chinese hepatocellular carcinoma patients显示文摘AIM: To identify prognostic factors of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), who were treated by orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). METHODS: From January 2000 to October 2006, 165 patients with HCC underwent OLT. Various clinicopathological risk factors for actuarial and recurrence-free survival were identified using the Kaplan-Meier method with the log-rank test. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify independently predictive factors for actuarial and recurrence-free survival, which were used to propose new selection criteria. We compared the outcome of the subgroup patients meeting different criteria. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method with the log-rank test. RESULTS: The median follow-up was 13.0 mo (2.8-69.5 mo). Overall, 1-, 2-, 3-and 5-year actuarial survival was 73.3%, 45.6%, 35.4% and 32.1%, respectively. One-, 2-, 3-and 5-year overall recurrencefree survival was 67.0%, 44.3%, 34.5% and 34.5%, respectively. In univariate analysis, number of tumors, total tumor size, lobar distribution, differentiation, macrovascular invasion, microvascular invasion, capsulationof the tumor, and lymph node metastasis were found to be associated significantly with actuarial and tumor-free survival. By means of using the multivariate Cox proportional hazards model, total tumor size and macrovas-cular invasion were found to be independent predictors of actuarial and tumor-free survival. When the selection criteria were expanded into the proposed criteria, there was no significant difference in 1-, 2-, 3-and 5-year actuarial and tumor-free survival of the 49 patients who met the proposed criteria (97.6%, 82.8%, 82.8% and 82.8%, and 90.7%, 82.8%, 68.8% and 68.8%, respectively) compared with that of patients who met the Milan or University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) criteria. CONCLUSION: Macrovascular invasion and total tumor diameter are the strongest prognostic factors. 9Anisotropic coding metamaterials and their powerful manipulation of differently polarized terahertz waves显示文摘Metamaterials based on effective media can be used to produce a number of unusual physical properties(for example,negative refraction and invisibility cloaking)because they can be tailored with effective medium parameters that do not occur in nature.Recently,the use of coding metamaterials has been suggested for the control of electromagnetic waves through the design of coding sequences using digital elements‘0’and‘1,'which possess opposite phase responses.Here we propose the concept of an anisotropic coding metamaterial in which the coding behaviors in different directions are dependent on the polarization status of the electromagnetic waves.We experimentally demonstrate an ultrathin and flexible polarization-controlled anisotropic coding metasurface that functions in the terahertz regime using specially designed coding elements.By encoding the elements with elaborately designed coding sequences(both 1-bit and 2-bit sequences),the x-and y-polarized waves can be anomalously reflected or independently diffused in three dimensions.The simulated far-field scattering patterns and near-field distributions are presented to illustrate the dual-functional performance of the encoded metasurface,and the results are consistent with the measured results.We further demonstrate the ability of the anisotropic coding metasurfaces to generate a beam splitter and realize simultaneous anomalous reflections and polarization conversions,thus providing powerful control of differently polarized electromagnetic waves.The proposed method enables versatile beam behaviors under orthogonal polarizations using a single metasurface and has the potential for use in the development of interesting terahertz devices.Shuo Liu Tie Jun Cui Quan Xu Di Bao Liangliang Du Xiang Wan Wen Xuan Tang Chunmei Ouyang Xiao Yang Zhou Hao Yuan Hui Feng Ma Wei Xiang Jiang Jiaguang Han Weili Zhang Qiang Cheng 2016Light(Science & Applications)2016,5,1:36
10Computed tomography perfusion in evaluating the therapeutic effect of transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM: To prospectively assess the changes in parameters of computed tomography (CT) perfusion pre-and post-transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in different treatment response groups, and to correlate the changes with various responses of HCC to TACE. METHODS: Thirty-nine HCC patients underwent CT perfusion examinations pre-(1 d before TACE) and post-treatment (4 wk after TACE). The response evaluation criteria for solid tumors (RECIST) were referred to when treatment responses were distributed. Wilcoxon-signed ranks test was used to compare the differences in CT perfusion parameters pre-and post-TACE for different response groups. RESULTS: Only one case had treatment response to CR and the CT perfusion maps of post-treatment lesion displayed complete absence of signals. In the PR treatment response group, hepatic artery perfusion (HAP), hepatic arterial fracture (HAF) and hepatic blood volume (HBV) of viable tumors post-TACE were reduced compared with pre-TACE (P = 0.001, 0.030 and 0.001, respectively). In the SD group, all CT perfusion parameters were not significantly different pre-and post-TACE. In the PD group, HAP, HAF, portal vein perfusion (PVP) and hepatic blood flow (HBF) of viable tumors post-TACE were significantly increased compared with pre-TACE (P = 0.005, 0.012, 0.035 and 0.005, respectively). CONCLUSION: Changes in CT perfusion parameters of viable tumors are correlated with different responses of HCC to TACE. 12Broadband diffusion of terahertz waves by multi-bit coding metasurfaces显示文摘The terahertz region is a special region of the electromagnetic spectrum that incorporates the advantages of both microwaves and infrared light waves.In the past decade,metamaterials with effective medium parameters or gradient phases have been studied to control terahertz waves and realize functional devices.Here,we present a new approach to manipulate terahertz waves by using coding metasurfaces that are composed of digital coding elements.We propose a general coding unit based on a Minkowski closed-loop particle that is capable of generating 1-bit coding(with two phase states of 0 and 180°),2-bit coding(with four phase states of 0,90°,180°,and 270°),and multi-bit coding elements in the terahertz frequencies by using different geometric scales.We show that multi-bit coding metasurfaces have strong abilities to control terahertz waves by designing-specific coding sequences.As an application,we demonstrate a new scattering strategy of terahertz waves—broadband and wide-angle diffusion—using a 2-bit coding metasurface with a special coding design and verify it by both numerical simulations and experiments.The presented method opens a new route to reducing the scattering of terahertz waves.Li-Hua Gao Qiang Cheng Jing Yang Shao-Jie Ma Jie Zhao Shuo Liu Hai-Bing Chen Qiong He Wei-Xiang Jiang Hui-Feng Ma Qi-Ye Wen Lan-Ju Liang Biao-Bing Jin Wei-Wei Liu Lei Zhou Jian-Quan Yao Pei-Heng Wu Tie-Jun Cui 2015Light(Science & Applications)2015,4,1:31
13The combined effects of the ENSO and the Arctic Oscillation on the winter climate anomalies in East Asia显示文摘With the warm/cold phases of the El Ni o and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) as a background, the impacts of monthly variation in the Arctic Oscillation (AO) on the winter climate anomalies in East Asia are studied with the NCEP/DOE Reanalysis 2 data and the Chinese station data regarding temperature and rainfall. The combined effects of ENSO and the AO indicate that the winter climate anomalies are mainly influenced by the AO in northern China and the ENSO in southern China, when an El Ni o couples with a negative AO month or a La Ni a couples with a positive AO month. These climate anomalies in China are consistent with the mechanisms proposed in previous studies. However, most of China presents a different pattern of climate anomalies if an El Ni o couples with a positive AO month or a La Ni a couples with a negative AO month, with the exception of the temperature anomalies in northern China, which are still affected dominantly by the AO. Further analysis suggests that the causes are attributed to the differences in both the stratosphere-troposphere interaction and the extratropics-tropics interaction. In the former cases, zonal symmetric circulation prevails in the winter and the extratropics-tropics interaction is weakened. Thus, the influences of the ENSO and the AO on the East Asian climate mainly present linear combination effects. On the contrary, an annular mode of atmospheric circulation is not favored in the latter cases and the extratropics-tropics interaction is strong. 15Temperature effect and thermal impact in lithium-ion batteries: A review显示文摘Lithium-ion batteries, with high energy density(up to 705 Wh/L) and power density(up to 10,000 W/L), exhibit high capacity and great working performance. As rechargeable batteries, lithium-ion batteries serve as power sources in various application systems. Temperature, as a critical factor, significantly impacts on the performance of lithium-ion batteries and also limits the application of lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, different temperature conditions result in different adverse effects. Accurate measurement of temperature inside lithiumion batteries and understanding the temperature effects are important for the proper battery management. 18Prediction of recurrence and prognosis in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma after resection by use of CLIP score显示文摘AIM: The survival time of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after resection is hard to predict. Both residual liver function and tumor extension factors should be considered. A new scoring system has recently been proposed by the Cancer of the Liver Italian Program (CLIP).CUP score was confirmed to be one of the best ways to stage patients with HCC. To our knowledge, however, the literature concerning the correlation between CLIP score and prognosis for patients with HCC after resection was not pubhshed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the recurrence and prognostic value of CLIP score for the patients with HCC after resection.METHODS: A retrospective survey was carried out in 174patients undergoing resection of HCC from January 1986 toJune 1998. Six patients who died in the hospital afteroperation and 11 patients with the recurrence of the diseasewere excluded at 1 month after hepatectomy. By the end ofJune 2001, 4 patients were lost and 153 patients with curativeresection have been followed up for at least three years.Among 153 patients, 115 developed intrahepatic recurrenceand 10 developed extrahepatic recurrence, whereas the other28 remained free of recurrence. Recurrences were classifiedinto early ( < / = 3 year) and late ( > 3 year) recurrence. TheCLIP score included the parameters involved in the Child-Pugh stage (0-2), plus macroscopic tumor morphology (0-2), AFP levels (0-1), and the presence or absence of portalthrombosis (0-1)o By contrast, portal vein thrombosis wasdefined as the presence of tumor emboli within vascularchannel analyzed by microscopic examination in this study.Risk factors for recurrence and prognostic factors forsurvival in each group were analyzed by the chi-square test,the Kaplan-Meier estimation and the COX proportionalhazards model respectively.RESULTS: The 1-, 3-, 5-, 7-, andl0-year disease-free survivalrates after curative resection of HCC were 57.2 %、 28.3 %、23.5 %、 18.8 % and 17.8 %, respectively. Median survivaltime was 28,16,10,4,and 5 mo for CLIP score 0,1,2,3, and 4to 5, respectively. Early and late recurrence developed in109 patients and 16 patients respectively. By the chi-squaretest, tumor size, micrusatsllite, venous invasion, tumortype (uninodular, muitinodular, massive), tumor extension( < / = or > 50 % of liver parenchyna replaced by tumor),TNM stage,CLIP score,and resection margin were the risk factors for early recurrence,whereas CLIP score and Child-Pugh stage were significant risk factors for late recurrence. in univariate survival analysis,Child-Pugh stages,resection margin,tumor size,microsatellite,venous invasion,tumor type,tumor extension,TNM stages,and CLIP score were associated with prognosis.The multivariale analysis by COX proportional hazards modes showed that the independent predictive factors of survival were resection margins and TNM stages. 19A Rabbit Model of Hormone-induced Early Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head显示文摘Objective To establish an experimental model of early stage avascular necrosis of the femoral head(ANFH) caused by corticosteroid in adult rabbits and to observe the pathological changes with various imaging techniques.Methods ANFH was induced by a combination of hypersensitivity vasculitis caused by injection of horse serum and subsequent administration of a high dose of corticosteroid.The pathological changes were detected with digital radiography(DR),computed tomography(CT),magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),ink artery infusion angiography,hematoxylin-eosin staining,and immunohistochemistry.Results The imageological and pathological changes corresponded to the clinical characteristics of early stage ANFH.DR showed bilaterally increased bone density,an unclear epiphyseal line,and blurred texture of cancellous bone.CT showed spot-like low-density imaging of cancellous bone,thinner cortical bone,osteoporosis,and an unclear epiphyseal line.MRI showed bone marrow edema and spot-like high signals in T2-weighted imaging in cancellous bone.Ink artery infusion angiography showed fewer obstructed blood vessels in the femoral head.HE staining of pathological sections showed fewer trabeculae and thin bone,an increased proportion of empty osteocyte lacunae,decreased hematopoiesis,thrombosis,and fat cell hypertrophy.Immunohistochemistry showed attenuated expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in osteoblasts and chondrocytes,and on the inner membrane of blood vessels.Conclusion Experimental rabbit model of early stage ANFH caused by corticosteroid can be successfully established and provide the foundation for developing effective methods to treat early stage ANFH.QIAN WEN LI MA YAN-PING CHEN LIN YANG WEI LUO AND XIAO-NING WANG 2008Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2008,21,5:24
20Furazolidone-based triple and quadruple eradication therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of furazolidone-based triple and quadruple therapy in eradicating Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) in a multi-center randomized controlled trial.METHODS: A total of 720 H. pylori positive patients with duodenal ulcer disease were enrolled at 10 different hospitals in Jiangxi province in China. The patients were randomly assigned to four treatment groups as follows: patients in Groups 1 and 3 received rabeprazole(10 mg), amoxicillin(1000 mg) and furazolidone(100 mg) twice daily for 7 and 10 d, respectively; patients in Groups 2 and 4 received rabeprazole(10 mg), bismuth(220 mg), amoxicillin(1000 mg) and furazolidone(100 mg) twice daily for 7 and 10 d, respectively. The primary outcome measure was H. pylori eradication rate 4 wk after treatment by intention-to-treat and per protocol analysis, while the secondary outcome measures were symptom and sign changes at the end of treatment and 4 wk after the end of treatment, as well as the proportion of patients who developed adverse events.RESULTS: The demographic data of the four groups were not significantly different. Overall, 666 patients completed the scheme and were re-assessed with the 13C-urea breath test. The intention-to-treat analysis of the H. pylori eradication rates in Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 were 74.44%, 82.78%, 78.89% and 86.11%, respectively. The H. pylori eradication rate in Group 4 was significantly higher than that in Group 1. According tothe per protocol analysis, the H. pylori eradication rates in Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 were 81.21%, 89.22%, 85.54% and 92.26%, respectively. The H. pylori eradication rate in Group 4 was significantly higher than that in Group 1. The number of adverse events was 15(8.3%), 16(8.9%), 15(8.3%) and 17(9.4%) in Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively, including dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, skin rash, itchy skin, and malaise.
