1Effects of Sini San used alone and in combination with fluoxetine on central and peripheral 5-HT levels in a rat model of depression显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Sini San and fluoxetine on the levels of central and peripheral 5-HT in a rat model of depression, and provide new insight into the treatment of depression with integrated Chinese-Western Medicine.METHODS: A rat model of depression was established by chronic mild stress(CMS). Model rats received either Sini San, fluoxetine, a combination of the two drugs, or no drug treatment. Healthy naive rats were used as controls. Open field and sucrose preference tests were used to assess depression-like behavior. ELISA and immunohistochemistry were used to determine central and peripheral levels of 5-HT.RESULTS: In the group with no drug treatment,central 5-HT expression decreased while peripheral5-HT concentrations increased as CMS continued.Four weeks after CMS, Sini San alone was less effective in reducing depression-like behavior than fluoxetine alone or in combination with Sini San,but combined use was more effective than fluoxetine alone. Eight weeks after CMS, Sini San alone or in combination with fluoxetine was more effective in reducing depression-like behavior than fluoxetine alone. Furthermore Sini San and fluoxetine used alone or in combination notably increased central 5-HT expression and decreased peripheral 5-HT levels in the rat model.CONCLUSION:The results of the present study indicate that there is a synergistic action between the two medicines in the treatment of depression. Sini San exhibited a relatively long lag before its effects were observed; however, by eight weeks the Traditional Chinese Medicine appeared at least as effective as fluoxetine. 2Consumer acceptability and sensory profiling of sesame oils obtained from different processes显示文摘This study aimed to investigate the effect of oil processing technologies on the sensory qualities of sesame oils and to identify drivers of liking.Using a check-all-that-apply(CATA)question and a hedonic scale,150 consumers evaluated the acceptability and sensory characteristics of 5 sesame oil samples including an aqueous extracted oil(S1),a cold-pressed oil(S2),two batches of screw-pressed oils(S3 and S5)and one crude sesame oil(S4).Solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-olfactometry-mass spectrometry(SPME-GC-O-MS)was used to identify odour-active compounds.The results showed that roasting,extraction techniques and filtration process influenced sensory perception and the acceptability of sesame oils.Consumers liked roasted sesame oils more than the cold-pressed sesame oil and liked the aqueous extracted sesame oil the most.Sensory attributes'sweet smell','mellow','roasted','nutty','persistent','high-intense flavour'and'cooked sesame seed flavour'were drivers of liking,while'green','raw sesame seed','rancid','woody'and'fishy'were drivers of disliking.'Burnt'flavour was liked by some while disliked by others.Pyrazines contributed to roasted flavour;2-acetylpyrrole,acetophenone and furfural contributed to nutty flavour;2-pentyl-furan,5-methyl-2-furancarboxaldehyde,and 2-phenyl-2-butenal contributed to sweet odour in the roasted sesame seeds.Nonanal,hexanal,1-hexanol and ocimene were responsible for the'green'flavour perceived in the cold-pressed oil.This study provides valuable information for sesame manufacturers on how to improve the sensory qualities of sesame oils through process manipulation to meet the needs of diverse consumers.Wenting Yin Maradza Washington Xueting Ma Xi Yang Aliu Lu Rui Shi Renyong Zhao Xuede Wang 2020Grain & Oil Science and Technology2020,3,2:5
3Possible mechanisms underlying treatment of Alzheimer’s disease with Traditional Chinese Medicine: active components, potential targets and synthetic pathways of Bulao Elixir显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the mechanisms underlying the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease(AD) with Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), by examining the active components, potential targets and synthetic pathways of Bulao Elixir(BLE).METHODS: The Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion(ADME)/Toxicology(T) calculation was used to screen the active components of Bulao Elixir. Based on the TCM Systems Pharmacology Analysis Platform(TCMSP database) and a text mining tool(GoPubMed database), we predicted and screened the active components of Bulao Elixir and its therapeutic targets for AD. Using the Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery(DAVID), we obtained the targets for AD. Cytoscape software was used to establish a network map of the active component-target and target-pathway of Bulao Elixir. Gene function, related biological processes and signaling pathways were analyzed using the DAVID database.RESULTS: Twelve active components were selected from 196 components of Bulao Elixir. Among 2209 targets, 102 effective targets were selected, and 30 important targets were identified via matching with the disease targets. After further analysis, 14 core targets were identified. Enrichment analysis revealed that most of these important targets were involved in multiple biological processes, including apoptosis, inflammatory reactions, and cell regulation cycles. 4Dendrocalamus latiflorus and its component rutin exhibit glucose-lowering activities by inhibiting hepatic glucose production via AKT activation显示文摘The potential medicinal value of Ma bamboo(Dendrocalamus latiflorus), one of the most popular and economically important bamboo species in China, has been underestimated. In the present study, we found that D. latiflorus leaf extract(DLE) reduced fasting blood glucose levels, body weight,and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol with low liver toxicity in db/db mice. In addition, gene expression profiling was performed and pathway enrichment analysis showed that DLE affected metabolic pathways.Importantly, DLE activated the AKT signaling pathway and reduced glucose production by downregulating glucose-6-phosphatase(G6 PC) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase 1(PCK1) expression. Moreover, network pharmacology analysis identified rutin as an active component in DLE through targeting insulin growth factor 1 receptor(IGF1 R), an upstream signaling transducer of AKT. 5Boosting Transport Kinetics of Ions and Electrons Simultaneously by Ti3C2Tx(MXene)Addition for Enhanced Electrochromic Performance显示文摘Electrochromic technology plays a significant role in energy conservation,while its performance is greatly limited by the transport behavior of ions and electrons.Hence,an electrochromic system with overall excellent performances still need to be explored.Initially motivated by the high ionic and electronic conductivity of transition metal carbide or nitride(MXene),we design a feasible procedure to synthesize the MXene/WO3−x composite electrochromic film.The consequently boosted electrochromic performances prove that the addition of MXene is an effective strategy for simultaneously enhancing electrons and ions transport behavior in electrochromic layer.The MXene/WO3−x electrochromic device exhibits enhanced transmittance modulation and coloration efficiency(60.4%,69.1 cm^2 C^−1),higher diffusion coefficient of Li+and excellent cycling stability(200 cycles)over the pure WO3−x device.Meanwhile,numerical stimulation theoretically explores the mechanism and kinetics of the lithium ion diffusion,and proves the spatial and time distributions of higher Li+concentration in MXene/WO3−x composite electrochromic layer.Both experiments and theoretical data reveal that the addition of MXene is effective to promote the transport kinetics of ions and electrons simultaneously and thus realizing a high-performance electrochromic device.This work opens new avenues for electrochromic materials design and deepens the study of kinetics mechanism of ion diffusion in electrochromic devices.Wenting Wu Huajing Fang Hailong Ma Liangliang Wu Wenqing Zhang Hong Wang 2021Nano-Micro Letters2021,13,1:2
6Somatostatin 4 regulates growth and modulates gametogenesis in zebrafish显示文摘Somatostatin(SST)plays important roles in growth and development.In teleost fishes six SST encoding genes(sst1 to sst6)have been identified although few studies have addressed their function.Here we aim to determine the function of the teleost specific sst4 in the zebrafish.A CRISPR/Cas9 sst4 zebrafish mutant with loss of function(sst4−/−)was produced which grew significantly faster and was heavier at the onset of gonadal maturation than the wild type(WT).Consistent with their faster growth,liver igf1,igf2a and igf2b expression was significantly upregulated in the sst4−/−fish compared to the WT.Histological examination of the ovaries and testis indicated that sst4−/−fish had slightly delayed testicular gametogenesis compared to the WT.Significantly lower expression of igf3,amh,insl3,hsd17b3,hsd11b2,hsd20b,cyp11b and cyp17 was consistently observed in the sst4−/−testis.In contrast,the ovaries had lower expression of igf1,igf2a and cyp19a1a but increased expression of igf2b and hsd20b.The gonadotrophin beta subunits(fshb and lhb)in the brain were downregulated indicating the brain-pituitary-gonadal axis was downregulated in the sst4−/−fish and suggesting that the steroid production is compromised in the maturing gonads.In addition,analysis of sst1 and sst3 mRNA levels in sst4−/−fish suggests a dosage compensation effect of sst1 in the brain and liver.Altogether,the results from the zebrafish sst4−/−line support the idea that sst4 is involved in the regulation of igf signalling,somatic growth and reproduction since steroidogenesis and gametogenesis at pubertal onset were compromised.Chenchao Sui Jie Chen Jing Ma Wenting Zhao Adelino V.M.Canário Rute S.T.Martins 2019Aquaculture and Fisheries2019,4,6:1

8Multi-objective and multi-scheme research on water and sediment regulation potential of reservoirs in the upper Yellow River显示文摘The problems of the deteriorating relation between water and sediment,and the escalating conflict between water supply and demand in the upper Yellow River(YR),need to be addressed.Reservoirs of Longyangxia,Liujiaxia,and Heishanxia(Long-Liu-Hei)in the upper YR are taken as the research object,and a multi-objective,water-sediment optimal operation model for cascade reservoirs Long-Liu-Hei has been developed.This operation model considers the comprehensive requirements of water supply,power generation,flood control,and especially,water and sediment regulation.The improved Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithms(NSGA-II)method is used to demonstrate the water and sediment regulation potential of three scenario schemes under long-term conditions,and the adjustable water allocation of four schemes under typical year conditions are calculated.It is recommended to use the mode of generating hydropower depending on the available water amount as the best operating mode under the conditions of a long time series and for typical years.This recommended operation mode has verified the rationality and accuracy of the reservoir operations model.At the same time,compared with the calculation results for water and sediment regulation after the construction of the Heishanxia,the current research indicates:(1)Under the recommended model,the potential for water and sediment regulation under the long-term series and typical years is once every four years.(2)Inter-basin water transfer greatly improves the cascade power generation.When the adjustable water volume is converted into the controlled volume for water and sediment regulation,the intensity frequency of water and sediment regulation of cascade reservoirs are improved.(3)With the intensification of the contradiction between the supply of and demand for water resources in the upper YR in the future,the amount of transferable water exhibits a decreasing trend,and the regulation of water and sediment in the upper YR is facing huge challenges.(4)Through joint operation with the Longyangxia and Liujiaxia reservoirs(Long-Liu),Heishanxia will play an important role in the regulation and control of power generation,water supply,flood control,and ice prevention in the upper YR.The current research results can provide a theoretical basis and technical support for water and sediment regulation in the YR basin.Tao Bai Jia Yu Wenting Jin Jiaquan Wan Shaojie Gou Xu Ma Panpan Ma 2023International Journal of Sediment Research2023,38,2:1

11Combination of Astragalus membranaceus and Euonymus alatus (THUNB.) SIEB. for treatment of diabetes: A network-based pharmacology research显示文摘Objective:To find the target genes in combination of astragalus root(Astragalus membranaceus)and spindle tree wings(Euonymus alatus(THUNB.)SIEB.)(Qijian Heji)with the function of regulating blood glucose levels in kk mice by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR(RT-PCR).To achieve the primary exploration on the material basis for Qijian Heji to improve the blood glucose levels of type 2 diabetic kk mice.Methods:We applied RT-PCR to detecting the expression of gene targets in kidney tissues of type 2 diabetes model kk mice.The detected gene targets were predicted by the network pharmacology method in the early stage of the project.Through the observation of the hypoglycemic effect of different ratios of Qijian Heji,the optimal proportion was determined and then used to conduct research of material basis.Results:Continuous administration of Qijian Heji(astragalus root:spindle tree wings Z 3:1)for six weeks resulted in significantly lowering blood glucose levels in mice in the fourth week,dropping from 33.3 to 21.9 mmol/L;this lower level was maintained in the fifth to sixth weeks.Blood glucose values in the positive drug group decreased from 33.3 to 21.85 mmol/L in the fourth week and maintained steady decreasing in the fifth and sixth weeks.Conclusion:Qijian Heji,with proportion of 3:1,could significantly reduce the blood glucose values in kk mice,animal experiment results verified the accurate prediction of network pharmacology,and at the same time,it is verified there was a certain therapeutic effect about the combination of the two herbs on reducing the glucose value.Animal experiments and RT-PCR results showed that Qijian Heji conducted a hypoglycemic effect by modulating estrogen receptor(ESR1)and renin(REN)expression.Kun Chen Dong Deng Youliang Huang Xiaoyun Ma Xueli Li Wenting Zhang Zhiyong Li Yang Liu Wei Wang Jianxin Chen HuiHui Zhao 2016Journal of Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences2016,3,3:1

13Design of single-phased magnesium alloys with typically high solubility rare earth elements for biomedical applications:Concept and proof显示文摘Rare earth elements(REEs)have been long applied in magnesium alloys,among which the mischmetal-containing WE43 alloy has already got the CE mark approval for clinical application.A considerable amount of REEs(7 wt%)is needed in that multi-phased alloy to achieve a good combination of mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.However,the high complex RE addition accompanied with multiple second phases may bring the concern of biological hazards.Single-phased Mg-RE alloys with simpler compositions were proposed to improve the overall performance,i.e.,“Simpler alloy,better performance”.The single-phased microstructure can be successfully obtained with typical high-solubility REEs(Ho,Er or Lu)through traditional smelting,casting and extrusion in a wide compositional range.A good corrosion resistance with a macroscopically uniform corrosion mode was guaranteed by the homogeneously single-phased microstructure.The bimodal-grained structure with plenty of sub-grain microstructures allow us to minimize the RE addition to<1 wt%,without losing mechanical properties.The single-phased Mg-RE alloys show comparable mechanical properties to the clinically-proven Mg-based implants.They exhibited similar in-vitro and in-vivo performances(without local or systematic toxicity in SD-rats)compared to a high purity magnesium.In addition,metal elements in our single-phased alloys can be gradually excreted through the urinary system and digestive system,showing no consistent accumulation of RE in main organs,i.e.,less burden on organs.The novel concept in this study focuses on the simplification of Mg-RE based alloys for biomedical purpose,and other biodegradable metals with single-phased microstructures are expected to be explored.Dong Bian Xiao Chu Jin Xiao Zhipei Tong He Huang Qinggong Jia Jianing Liu Wenting Li Hui Yu Yue He Limin Ma Xiaolan Wang Mei Li Tao Yang Wenhan Huang Chi Zhang Mengyu Yao Yu Zhang Zhigang Xu Shaokang Guan Yufeng Zheng 2023Bioactive Materials2023,,4:1
14Citrus fruits are rich in flavonoids for immunoregulation and potential targeting ACE2显示文摘The most recent outbreak of 2019 novel coronavirus,named as COVID-19,caused pneumonia epidemic in Wuhan with 2121 deaths cases as of February 20th 2020.Identification of effective antiviral agents to combat the novel coronavirus is urgently needed.Citrus fruit peel or wild citrus are rich in flavonoids,and clinically documented for roles in relief of cough and promotion of digestive health.Therefore,citrus fruits are assumed to possess antivirus activities or enhance the host immunity.A previous study found that hesperetin could act as a high potent inhibitor of SARS-CoV 3CLpro.We determined six flavonoid compounds’content in three citrus species by using LC-MS technique.The content of naringin and naringenin was at higher levels in pummelo.Hesperetin and hesperidin were highly accumulated in mandarin and sweet orange.The subsequent in vitro and in vivo experiments indicated that naringin could inhibit the expression of the proinflammatory cytokines(COX-2,iNOS,IL-1βand IL-6)induced by LPS in Raw macrophage cell line,and may restrain cytokine through inhibiting HMGB1 expression in a mouse model.The results revealed that naringin may have a potential application for preventing cytokine storm.We simulated molecular docking to predict the binding affinity of those flavonoids to bind Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2(ACE 2),which is a receptor of the coronavirus.Consideration of the potential anti-coronavirus and anti-inflammatory activity of flavonoids,the citrus fruit or its derived phytochemicals are promising in the use of prevention and treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection.Wenting Liu Weikang Zheng Liping Cheng Ming Li Jie Huang Shuzheng Bao Qiang Xu Zhaocheng Ma 2022Natural Products and Bioprospecting2022,12,1:1
15Implanting iodine-125 seeds into rat dorsal root ganglion for neuropathic pain: neuronal microdamage without impacting hind limb motion显示文摘The use of iodine-125(125I) in cancer treatment has been shown to relieve patients' pain. Considering dorsal root ganglia are critical for neural transmission between the peripheral and central nervous systems, we assumed that 125 I could be implanted into rat dorsal root ganglia to provide relief for neuropathic pain. 125 I seeds with different radioactivity(0, 14.8, 29.6 MBq) were implanted separately through L4–5 and L5–6 intervertebral foramen into the vicinity of the L5 dorsal root ganglion. von Frey hair results demonstrated the mechanical pain threshold was elevated after implanting 125 I seeds from the high radioactivity group. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that nuclear membrane shrinkage, nucleolar margination, widespread mitochondrial swelling, partial vacuolization, lysosome increase, and partial endoplasmic reticulum dilation were visible at 1,440 hours in the low radioactivity group and at 336 hours in the high radioactivity group. Abundant nuclear membrane shrinkage, partial fuzzy nuclear membrane and endoplasmic reticulum necrosis were observed at 1,440 hours in the high radioactivity group. No significant difference in combined behavioral scores was detected between preoperation and postoperation in the low and high radioactivity groups. 16A dual-use probe for nano-metric photoelectric characterization using a confined light field generated by photonic crystals in the cantilever显示文摘We propose a plasmonic atomic force microscopy (AFM) probe, which takes a part of the laser beam for monitoring cantilever deflection as the excitation light source. Photonic crystal cavities are integrated near the cantilever’s free end where the laser spot locates. The transmitted light excites surface plasmon polaritons on the metal-coated tip and induces a confined hot-spot at the tip apex. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the plasmonic probe can couple a tilted, linearly polarized beam efficiently and yield a remarkable local electromagnetic enhancement with the intensity being around 21 times stronger than that of the original probe. For demonstration, we employ the plasmonic probe in electrostatic force microscopy and scanning Kelvin probe microscopy to study the impact of local light field on the photoelectric characteristics of SiO_(2) and Au nanoparticles. Compared with the original probe, obvious differences are observed in the electrostatic force gradients on SiO_(2) nanoparticles and in the surface potentials of Au nanoparticles. 20A new method to prepare calcium oxalate films for marble protection显示文摘Artificial calcium oxalate films have been applied to protect sculptures,monuments,and buildings made of marble due to their potential protective capacities.Unfortunately,artificially prepared calcium oxalate films are usually loose,and easy to peel off in contrast to the natural ones.In this paper,a new method was developed for the preparation of a compact and cohesive calcium oxalate film,using ethylene glycol as an additive.The morphology,elemental composition,structure,and crystal phase of the film were analyzed by SEM,EDX,IR,and XRD,and the protective effects were investigated by acid resistance test,while its adhesion to the underlying marble by the Scotch tape test.The porosity,water absorption,and color of treated marble were also assessed.The results showed that a calcium oxalate film with a compact structure,good adhesion,and a protective effect against acid rain can be successfully obtained by including ethylene glycol as an additive.With the new preparation method,a better bond between the stone and the film is obtained which contributes to solving the spalling problem of the artificial calcium oxalate films.HE Lu JIANG YiJie MA WenTing LIU Yan YANG FuWei LU RuiCong WANG Lu ZHANG Kun CHEN XinNan GAO Xiang 2023Science China(Technological Sciences)2023,66,8:0
