1PM_(2.5) in China:Measurements,sources,visibility and health effects,and mitigation显示文摘Concern over the health effects of fine particles in the ambient environment led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop the first standard for PM2.5(particulate matter less than 2.5 jxm) in 1997. The Particle Technology Laboratory at the University of Minnesota has helped to establish the PM2.5 standard by developing many instruments and samplers to perform atmospheric measurements. In this paper, we review various aspects of PM2.5, including its measurement, source apportionment, visibility and health effects, and mitigation. We focus on PM2.5 studies in China and where appropriate, compare them with those obtained in the U.S. Based on accurate PM2.5 sampling, chemical analysis, and source apportionment models, the major PM2.5 sources in China have been identified to be coal combustion, motor vehicle emissions, and industrial sources. Atmospheric visibility has been found to correlate well with PM2.5concentration. Sulfate, ammonium, and nitrate carried by PM2.5, commonly found in coal burning and vehicle emissions, are the dominant contributors to regional haze in China. Short-term exposure to PM2.5 is strongly associated with the increased risk of morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases in China. The strategy for PM2.5 mitigation must be based on reducing the pollutants from the two primary sources of coal-fired power plants and vehicle emissions. Although conventional Particulate Emission Control Devices(PECD) such as electrostatic precipitators in Chinese coal-fired power plants are generally effective for large particles, most of them may not have high collection efficiency of PM2.5.Baghouse filtration is gradually incorporated into the PECD to increase the PM2.5 collection efficiency.By adopting stringent vehicle emissions standard such as Euro 5 and 6, the emissions from vehicles can be gradually reduced over the years. 4The Uplift of the Longmenshan Thrust Belt and Subsidence of the West Sichuan Foreland Basin显示文摘Based on fission track dating of apatite, and measurement of vitrinite reflectance of rock samples from the Longmenshan (Longmen Mountain)area and the West Sichuan foreland basin and computer modelling it is concluded that (l)the Songpan-Garze fold belt has uplifted at least by 3-4 km with an uplift rate of no less than 0.3-0.4 mm/a since 10 Ma B.P.; (2) the Longmenshan thrust nappe belt has uplifted at least by 5-6 km with an uplift rate of more than 0.5- 0.6 mm /a since 10 Ma B.P.; (3) the Longmenshan detachment belt has uplifted by 1 - 2 km at a rate of 0.016-0.032 mm/a since 60 Ma B.P.; (4) the West Sichuan foreland basin has uplifted by 1.7-3 km at a rate of 0.028-0.05 mm/a since 60 Ma B.P.; (5) the uplift rate of the area on the west side of the Beichuan-Yingxiu-Xiaoguanzi fault for the last 10 Ma is 40 times as much as that on its east side; (6) the uplifting of the the Songpan - Garze fold belt and the subsidence of the West Sichuan foreland basin 60 Ma ago exhibit a mirro-image correlation, i.Liu Shugen, Luo Zhili, Dai Sulan, Changlu Institute of Technology, Chengdu, Sichuan, ChinaDennis Arne Dalhousie U niversity, Canadaand C.J.L. 5Ischemic preconditioning protects liver from hepatectomy under hepatic inflow occlusion for hepatocellular carcinoma patients with cirrhosis显示文摘AIM: To investigate the protective effect of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with cirrhosis undergoing hepatic resection under hepatic inflow occlusion (HIO) and its possible mechanism.METHODS: Twenty-nine consecutive patients with resectable OHCC were randomized into two groups: IPC group: before HIO, IPC with 5 min of ischemia and 5 min of reperfusion was given; control group: no IPC was given. Uver functions,hepatic Caspase-3 activity, and apoptotic cells were compared between these two groups.RESULTS: On postoperative days (POD) 1, 3 and 7, the aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) levels in the IPC group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). On POD 3 and 7, the total bilirubin level in the IPC group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). On POD 1, the albumin level in the IPC group was higher than that in the control group (P = 0.053). After 1 h of reperfusion, both hepatic Caspase-3 activity and apoptotic sinusoidal endothelial cells in the IPC group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.05).CONCLUSION: IPC has a potential protective effect on HCC patients with cirrhosis. 6Assessing the relative role of climate change and human activities in sandy desertification of Ordos region, China显示文摘Climate change and human activities are driving forces of sandy desertification and the relative role of them in sandy desertification is the hot point in related researches. A study was carried to assess the relative role of climate change and human activities in sandy desertification of Ordos region in China. Potential NPP and the difference between potential and actual NPP were selected as indicators to assess the relative role of climate change and human activities in sandy desertification, respectively. Assessing methods were built based on some scenarios for the reversion and expansion of sandy desertification and the relative role of climate change and human activities in sandy desertification of Ordos region were assessed from 1981 to 2000. The results showed that although some local places experienced an expansion of sandy desertification, the change of sandy desertification of Ordos region from 1981 to 2000 showed a stably reversing trend. The relative role of climate change and human activities in sandy desertification of Ordos region varied at different temporal and spatial scales in the reversion and expansion processes. In the reversion of sandy desertification, climate change was the dominant factor in the period of 1981 to 1990 and the reversed areas mainly induced by climate change including Mu Us sandy land and the transition zone between temperate steppe and temperate deciduous scrubs in north east of Ordos region; however, human activities controlled the reversed process during the period from 1991 to 2000 and the areas mainly induced by human activities distributed in all banners of Ordos region. 7Multi-Stage Basin Development and Hydrocarbon Accumulations: A Review of the Sichuan Basin at Eastern Margin of the Tibetan Plateau显示文摘Sichuan Basin is one of the uppermost petroliferous basins in China. It experienced three evolutionary phases which were marine carbonate platform(Ediacaran to Late Triassic), Indosinian-Yanshanian orogeny foreland basin(Late Triassic to Late Cretaceous) and uplift and tectonic modification(Late Cretaceous to Quaternary). The present-day tectonics of the Sichuan Basin and its periphery are characterized by three basic elements which are topography, basement type and surface structure, and two settings(plate margin and interior). Therefore, be subdivided into five units which have different structure and tectonic history. The basin contains five different sets of source rocks with thickness up to 2 500 m. These source rocks were well preserved due to the presence of Middel–Lower Triassic evaporites(>~200 m) and thick terrestrial sediments filling in the Indosinian-Yanshanian foreland basin(>3 000 m). The uplift and erosion since Late Cretaceous has significant influence on cross-strata migration and accumulation of oil and gas. 12Reproductive management through integration of PGD and MPS-based noninvasive prenatal screening/diagnosis for a family with GJB2-associated hearing impairment显示文摘A couple with a proband child of GJB2(encoding the gap junction protein connexin 26)-associated hearing impairment and a previous pregnancy miscarriage sought for a reproductive solution to bear a healthy child. Our study aimed to develop a customized preconception-to-neonate care trajectory to fulfill this clinical demand by integrating preimplantation genetic diagnosis(PGD), noninvasive prenatal testing(NIPT), and noninvasive prenatal diagnosis(NIPD) into the strategy. Auditory and genetic diagnosis of the proband child was carried out to identify the disease causative mutations. The couple then received in-vitro-fertilization treatment, and eight embryos were obtained for day 5 biopsy. PGD was performed by short-tandem-repeat linkage analysis and Sanger sequencing of GJB2 gene. Transfer of a GJB2 c.235del C heterozygous embryo resulted in a singleton pregnancy. At the 13 th week of gestation, genomic DNA(g DNA) from the trio family and cell-free DNA(cf DNA) from maternal plasma were obtained for assessment of fetal chromosomal aneuploidy and GJB2 mutations. NIPT and NIPD showed the absence of chromosomal aneuploidy and GJB2-associated disease in the fetus, which was later confirmed by invasive procedures and postnatal genetic/auditory diagnosis. 13Bionic optimization research of soil cultivating component design显示文摘The basic biomechanical laws that apply to the clawed toes of animals with powerful digging abilities and the optimal bionic design of curved soil cultivating components with an analogous contour were researched in a novel way. First, the curvature and profile of the inside contour line of a field mouse’s clawed toe were analyzed. The finite element method (FEM) was then used to simulate the working process in order to study the changing characteristics of the working resistance of bionic soil- engag- ing surfaces and the stress field of the processed soil. A straight-line cultivating component was used for comparative analysis. In accordance with the simulation results, a series of soil cultivating com- ponents of varying design were manufactured. An indoor soil bin experiment was carried out to meas- ure their working resistance and validate the results of the FEM analysis. 14Hf isotopes of zircon megacrysts from the Cenozoic basalts in eastern China显示文摘Cenozoic basalts are widely distributed in east- ern China, and some of them contain zircon megacrysts which are considered to be constituent mineral of the sub- continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) and petrogenetically related to mantle metasomatism induced by addition of crustal materials. Using the Laser Ablation Multiple Collec- tor Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-MC-ICPMS), zircon megacrysts from the Cenozoic ba- salts at Changle in Shandong, Mingxi in Fujian, and Penglai in Hainan provinces have been used for Hf isotopic analyses. The data indicate that there is no significant deviation for the different zircon grains in each locale, except those from Penglai. The obtained 176Hf /177Hf ratios are 0.28302 — 0.28308 for Changle, 0.28297—0.28300 for Mingxi, and 0.28288—0.28293 for Penglai, with corresponding εHf values of 8.7—10.8, 7.0—7.9, and 3.9—5.7, respectively. These data display that there existed some regional heterogeneity, but the Hf model ages clustere in the Phanerozoic. Therefore, it is inferred that metasomatism of the lithospheric mantle be- neath eastern China took place in the Phanerozoic, most probably in the Mesozoic-Cenozoic. 15Numerical and experimental study of magnetic fluid seal with large sealing gap and multiple magnetic sources显示文摘To improve the pressure capability of magnetic fluid seal with more than a 0.25 mm single edge gap,a magnetic fluid sealing structure with multiple magnetic sources which has five permanent magnets was designed.Magnetic field distributions under the pole pieces of the magnetic fluid seal with single and multiple magnetic sources were simulated by finite element method and its sealing pressure difference could be calculated according to the theoretical formula of the magnetic fluid seal.The effects of sealing gap height and magnetic source amount on the sealing capability were investigated experimentally.The theoretical and experimental results were compared,analyzed and discussed.The results demonstrated that the magnetic fluid seal with multiple magnetic sources was an effective method to improve the sealing capability for the rotary shaft with large gaps.The theoretical results agreed well with the experimental results when the height of the single edge gap was equal to 0.4 mm.However,it was found that when the height of the single edge gap was larger than 0.4 mm,the difference between the theoretical values and experimental values increased with the gap height because part of magnetic source had less or even no effect on magnetic fluid sealing capability.YANG XiaoLong ZHANG ZhiLi LI DeCai 2013Science China(Technological Sciences)2013,56,11:10
16A three-dimensional semi-implicit unstructured grid finite volume ocean model显示文摘A new three-dimensional semi-implicit finite-volume ocean model has been developed for simulating the coastal ocean circulation, which is based on the staggered C -unstructured non-orthogonal grid in the horizontal direction and z -level grid in the vertical direction. The three-dimensional model is discretized by the semi-implicit finite-volume method, in that the free-surface and the vertical diffusion are semi-implicit, thereby removing stability limitations associated with the surface gravity wave and vertical diffusion terms. The remaining terms in the momentum equations are discretized explicitly by an integral method. The partial cell method is used for resolving topography, which enables the model to better represent irregular topography. The model has been tested against analytical cases for wind and tidal oscillation circulation, and is applied to simulating the tidal flow in the Bohai Sea. 17A Modeling Study of Effective Radiative Forcing and Climate Response Due to Tropospheric Ozone显示文摘This study simulates the effective radiative forcing(ERF) of tropospheric ozone from 1850 to 2013 and its effects on global climate using an aerosol–climate coupled model, BCC AGCM2.0.1 CUACE/Aero, in combination with OMI(Ozone Monitoring Instrument) satellite ozone data. According to the OMI observations, the global annual mean tropospheric column ozone(TCO) was 33.9 DU in 2013, and the largest TCO was distributed in the belts between 30°N and 45°N and at approximately 30°S; the annual mean TCO was higher in the Northern Hemisphere than that in the Southern Hemisphere;and in boreal summer and autumn, the global mean TCO was higher than in winter and spring. The simulated ERF due to the change in tropospheric ozone concentration from 1850 to 2013 was 0.46 W m^(-2), thereby causing an increase in the global annual mean surface temperature by 0.36℃, and precipitation by 0.02 mm d^(-1)(the increase of surface temperature had a significance level above 95%). The surface temperature was increased more obviously over the high latitudes in both hemispheres, with the maximum exceeding 1.4?C in Siberia. 18Age and genesis of the Myanmar jadeite:Constraints from U-Pb ages and Hf isotopes of zircon inclusions显示文摘Myanmar jadeite (jadeitite) is well known for its economical value and distinctive tectonic locality within the collisional belt between India and Eurasian plates. However, it is less studied for its genesis and geodynamic implications due to precipitous topography, adverse weather and local military conflicts in the area. By means of combined ICP-MS and LA-MC-ICPMS techniques, we have carried out in-situ trace elements, U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes for zircon inclusions in a piece of jadeite gem sample. CL imaging suggests that the zircons are metasomatic in origin, and contain mineral inclusions of jadeite and omphacite. Seventy-five analyses on 16 grains of the zircons yield a U-Pb age of 158 ± 2 Ma. The Myanmar zircons differ from other types in that they have no significant Eu anomalies despite high HREE concentrations. Measured 176Hf/177Hf ratios range from 0.282976 to 0.283122, with an average value of 0.283066 ± 7; εHf(t) value of 13.8 ± 0.3 (n=75). These results indicate that the Myanmar jadeite was formed in the Late Jurassic, probably by interaction of fluid released from subducted oceanic slab with mantle wedge.
