| 3 | Driving factors of direct greenhouse gas emissions from China's pig industry from 1976 to 2016显示文摘Livestock cultivation is a significant source of greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions, accounting for 14.5% of the total anthropogenic emissions. China is responsible for a considerable share of the global livestock emissions, particularly caused by pork production. We used the Kaya identity and the logarithmic mean Divisia index(LMDI) to decompose the national annual GHG emissions from enteric fermentation and manure management in pig farming in China from 1976 to 2016. We decomposed the sources of the emissions into five driving factors:(1) technological progress(e.g., feed improvement);(2) structural adjustment in the livestock sector;(3) structural adjustment in agriculture;(4) affluence;and(5) population growth. The results showed that the net GHG emissions from the pig sector in China increased 16 million tons(Mt) of carbon dioxide equivalents(CO2 eq) during the study period. The decomposition analysis revealed that structural adjustment in agriculture, growing affluence, and population growth contributed to an increase of the GHG emissions of pork production by 23, 41, and 13 Mt CO2 eq, respectively. The technological progress and structural changes in animal husbandry mitigated emissions by –51 and –11 Mt CO2 eq, respectively. Further technological progress in pig production and optimizing the economic structures are critical for further reducing GHG emissions in China's pig industry. | 4 | Four-sample lactose hydrogen breath test for diagnosis of lactose malabsorption in irritable bowel syndrome patients with diarrhea显示文摘AIM: To validate 4-sample lactose hydrogen breath testing(4SLHBT) compared to standard 13-sample LHBT in the clinical setting.METHODS: Irritable bowel syndrome patients with diarrhea(IBS-D) and healthy volunteers(HVs) were enrolled and received a 10 g, 20 g, or 40 g doselactose hydrogen breath test(LHBT) in a randomized, double-blinded, controlled trial. The lactase gene promoter region was sequenced. Breath samples and symptoms were acquired at baseline and every 15 min for 3 h(13 measurements). The detection rates of lactose malabsorption(LM) and lactose intolerance(LI) for a 4SLHBT that acquired four measurements at 0, 90, 120, and 180 min from the same data set were compared with the results of standard LHBT.RESULTS: Sixty IBS-D patients and 60 HVs were studied. The genotype in all participants was C/C-13910. LM and LI detection rates increased with lactose dose from 10 g, 20 g to 40 g in both groups(P < 0.001). 4SLHBT showed excellent diagnostic concordance with standard LHBT(97%-100%, Kappa 0.815-0.942) with high sensitivity(90%-100%) and specificity(100%) at all three lactose doses in both groups.CONCLUSION: Reducing the number of measurements from 13 to 4 samples did not significantly impact on the accuracy of LHBT in health and IBS-D. 4SLHBT is a valid test for assessment of LM and LI in clinical practice. | Jian-Feng Yang Mark Fox Hua Chu Xia Zheng Yan-Qin Long Daniel Pohl Michael Fried Ning Dai | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,24: | 4 |
| 5 | Outcome analysis of management of liver trauma: A 10-year experience at a trauma center显示文摘AIM: To review the outcomes of liver trauma in patients with hepatic injuries only and in patients with associated injuries outside the liver.METHODS: Data of liver trauma patients presented to our center from January 2003 to October 2013 were reviewed. The patients were divided into two groups. Group 1 consisted of patients who had hepatic injuries only. Group 2 consisted of patients who also had associated injuries outside the liver.RESULTS: Seven(30.4%) patients in group 1 and 10(28.6%) patients in group 2 received non-operative management; the rest underwent operation. Blunt trauma occurred in 82.8%(48/58) of the patients and penetrative trauma in 17.2%(10/58). A higher injury severity score(ISS) was observed in group 2(median 45 vs 25, P < 0.0001). More patients in group 1 were hemodynamically stable(65.2% vs 37.1%, P = 0.036). Other parameters were comparable between groups. Group 1 had better 30-d survival(91.3% vs 71.4%, P = 0.045). On multivariate analysis using the logistic regression model, ISS was found to be associated with mortality(P = 0.004, hazard ratio = 1.035, 95%CI:CONCLUSION: Liver trauma patients with multiple injuries are relatively unstable on presentation. Despite a higher ISS in group 2, non-operative management was possible for selected patients. | 6 | Deciphering the dual role and prognostic potential of PINK1 across cancer types显示文摘Metabolic rewiring and deregulation of the cell cycle are hallmarks shared by many cancers.Concerted mutations in key tumor suppressor genes,such as PTEN,and oncogenes predispose cancer cells for marked utilization of resources to fuel accelerated cell proliferation and chemotherapeutic resistance.Mounting research has demonstrated that PTEN-induced putative kinase 1(PINK1)acts as a pivotal regulator of mitochondrial homeostasis in several cancer types,a function that also extends to the regulation of tumor cell proliferative capacity.In addition,involvement of PINK1 in modulating inflammatory responses has been highlighted by recent studies,further expounding PINK1’s multifunctional nature.This review discusses the oncogenic roles of PINK1 in multiple tumor cell types,with an emphasis on maintenance of mitochondrial homeostasis,while also evaluating literature suggesting a dual oncolytic mechanism based on PINK1’s modulation of the Warburg effect.From a clinical standpoint,its expression may also dictate the response to genotoxic stressors commonly used to treat multiple malignancies.By detailing the evidence suggesting that PINK1 possesses distinct prognostic value in the clinical setting and reviewing the duality of PINK1 function in a context-dependent manner,we present avenues for future studies of this dynamic protein. | Katherine Dai Daniel P.Radin Donna Leonardi | 2021 | Neural Regeneration Research2021,16,4: | 3 |
