| 4 | A 2-kb Mycovirus Converts a Pathogenic Fungus into a Beneficial Endophyte for Brassica Protection and Yield Enhancement显示文摘Mycoviruses are viruses that infect fungi,and hypovirulence-associated mycoviruses have the potential to control fungal diseases.However,it is unclear how mycovirus-mediated hypovirulent strains live and survive in the field,and no mycovirus has been applied for field crop protection.In this study,we found that a previously identified small DNA mycovirus(SsHADV-1)can convert its host,Sclerotinia sclerotiorum,from a typical necrotrophic pathogen to a beneficial endophytic fungus.SsHADV-1 downregulates the expression of key pathogenicity factor genes in S.sclerotiorum during infection.When growing in rapeseed,the SsHADV-1-infected strain DT-8 significantly regulates the expression of rapeseed genes involved in defense,hormone signaling,and circadian rhythm pathways.As a result,plant growth is promoted and disease resistance is enhanced.Field experiments showed that spraying DT-8 at the early flowering stage can reduce the disease severity of rapeseed stem rot by 67.6%and improve yield by 14.9%.Moreover,we discovered that SsHADV-1 could also infect other S.sclerotiorum strains on DT-8-inoculated plants and that DT-8 could be recovered from dead plants.These findings suggest that the mycoviruses may have the ability to shape the origin of endophytism.Our discoveries suggest that mycoviruses may influence the origin of endophytism and may also offer a novel strategy for disease control in which mycovirus-infected strains are used to improve crop health and release mycoviruses into the field. | Hongxiang Zhang Jiatao Xie Yanping Fu Jiasen Cheng Zheng Qu Zhenzhen Zhao Shufen Cheng Tao Chen Bo Li Qianqian Wang Xinqiang Liu Binnian Tian David B.Collinge Daohong Jiang | 2020 | Molecular Plant2020,13,10: | 9 |

| 6 | Record Low Sea-Ice Concentration in the Central Arctic during Summer 2010显示文摘The Arctic sea-ice extent has shown a declining trend over the past 30 years. Ice coverage reached historic minima in 2007 and again in 2012. This trend has recently been assessed to be unique over at least the last 1450 years. In the summer of 2010, a very low sea-ice concentration(SIC) appeared at high Arctic latitudes—even lower than that of surrounding pack ice at lower latitudes. This striking low ice concentration—referred to here as a record low ice concentration in the central Arctic(CARLIC)—is unique in our analysis period of 2003–15, and has not been previously reported in the literature. The CARLIC was not the result of ice melt, because sea ice was still quite thick based on in-situ ice thickness measurements.Instead, divergent ice drift appears to have been responsible for the CARLIC. A high correlation between SIC and wind stress curl suggests that the sea ice drift during the summer of 2010 responded strongly to the regional wind forcing. The drift trajectories of ice buoys exhibited a transpolar drift in the Atlantic sector and an eastward drift in the Pacific sector,which appeared to benefit the CARLIC in 2010. Under these conditions, more solar energy can penetrate into the open water,increasing melt through increased heat flux to the ocean. | 10 | Effect of nitrogen fertilization on yield, N content, and nitrogen fixation of alfalfa and smooth bromegrass grown alone or in mixture in greenhouse pots显示文摘Planting grass and legume mixtures on improved grasslands has the potential advantage of realizing both higher yields and lower environmental pollution by optimizing the balance between applied N fertilizer and the natural process of legume biological nitrogen fixation. However, the optimal level of N fertilization for grass-legume mixtures, to obtain the highest yield, quality, and contribution of N2 fixation, varies with species. A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted to study the temporal dynamics of N2 fixation of alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) grown alone and in mixture with smooth bromegrass(Bromus inermis Leyss.) in response to the addition of fertilizer N. Three levels of N(0, 75, and 150 kg ha–1) were examined using 15N-labeled urea to evaluate N2 fixation via the 15 N isotope dilution method. Treatments were designated N0(0.001 g per pot), N75(1.07 g per pot) and N150(2.14 g per pot). Alfalfa grown alone did not benefit from the addition of fertilizer N; dry matter was not significantly increased. In contrast, dry weight and N content of smooth bromegrass grown alone was increased significantly by N application. When grown as a mixture, smooth bromegrass biomass was increased significantly by N application, resulted in a decrease in alfalfa biomass. In addition, individual alfalfa plant dry weight(shoots+roots) was significantly lower in the mixture than when grown alone at all N levels. Smooth bromegrass shoot and root dry weight were significantly higher when grown with alfalfa than when grown alone, regardless of N application level. When grown alone, alfalfa's N2 fixation was reduced with N fertilization(R2=0.9376, P=0.0057). When grown in a mixture with smooth bromegrass, with 75 kg ha–1 of N fertilizer, the percentage of atmospheric N2 fixation contribution to total N in alfalfa(%Ndfa) had a maximum of 84.07 and 83.05% in the 2nd and 3rd harvests, respectively. Total 3-harvest %Ndfa was higher when alfalfa was grown in a mixture than when grown alone(shoots: |t|=3.39, P=0.0096; root: |t|=3.57, P=0.0073). We believe this was due to smooth bromegrass being better able to absorb available soil N(due to its fibrous root system), resulting inlower soil N availability and allowing alfalfa to develop an effective N2 fixing symbiosis prior to the 1st harvest. Once soil N levels were depleted, alfalfa was able to fix N2, resulting in the majority of its tissue N being derived from biological nitrogen fixation(BNF) in the 2nd and 3rd harvests. When grown in a mixture, with added N, alfalfa established an effective symbiosis earlier than when grown alone; in monoculture BNF did not contribute a significant portion of plant N in the N75 and N150 treatments, whereas in the mixture, BNF contributed 17.90 and 16.28% for these treatments respectively. Alfalfa has a higher BNF efficiency when grown in a mixture, initiating BNF earlier, and having higher N2 fixation due to less inhibition by soil-available N. | 11 | Assessing site-safeguard effectiveness and habitat preferences of Bar-headed Geese (Anser indicus) at their stopover sites within the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau using GPS/ GSM telemetry显示文摘Background:The Bar-headed Goose(Anser indicus)breeds across the high plains and plateau of Central Asia and winters in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(QTP),the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Indian sub-continent.Of the two recognized discrete flyways of the Bar-headed Goose,the Eastern Tibetan Flyway(ETF)is the larger,comprising at least six migration routes.However,we remain ignorant about their migratory connectivity,habitat use and effectiveness of site-safeguard mechanisms set in place for the species.Methods:We tracked 30 ETF Bar-headed Geese from Chinese and Mongolian breeding areas to their wintering grounds using GPS/GSM transmitters,to determine their migration routes and stopover staging patterns within the QTP,overlaying these upon GIS layers of protected area status and habitat type,to model their habitat selection.Results:In total,14 tagged Bar-headed Geese provided information on their entire autumn migration and 4 geese on their entire spring migration.Qinghai Lake marked birds overwintered in the QTP(n=2),geese tagged in Mongolia wintered either in the QTP(n=3)or in India/Bangladesh(n=9),representing three of the migration routes within the ETF.In total,tagged birds staged at 79 different stopover sites within QTP in autumn and 23 in spring,of which 65%(autumn)and 59%(spring)of all fixes fell within the boundaries of either National Nature Reserves(NNRs)or Important Birds Areas(IBAs)in the QTP.Bar-headed Geese predominantly occurred on four land-cover types:grassland(mostly by day),water bodies(at night),wetlands and bare substrates(salt flats,dry lake/river substrates and plough)with little change in proportion.Generalized linear mixed models comparing presence with pseudo-absence data suggested geese strongly selected for wetlands as staging habitat,avoiding bare substrates in spring.Conclusions:Based on our limited observations of these tagged geese,this study is the first to show that the current designated National Nature Reserves in place in the staging areas within the QTP appear adequate to protect this increasing population.In addition,Hala Lake in Qinghai Province and adjacent areas used as initial QTP staging during autumn migration(currently outside of designated as NNRs/IBAs)are recommended for protection,based on their use by tagged birds from this study.Habitat modelling confirmed the importance of natural wetlands as feeding areas and safe areas of open water as roosting places. | Junjian Zhang Yanbo Xie Laixing Li Nyambayar Batbayar Xueqin Deng Iderbat Damba Fanjuan Meng Lei Cao Anthony David Fox | 2020 | Avian Research2020,11,4: | 5 |
| 12 | Spectrum projection with a bandgap-gradient perovskite cell for colour perception显示文摘Optoelectronic devices for light or spectral signal detection are desired for use in a wide range of applications,including sensing,imaging,optical communications,and in situ characterization.However,existing photodetectors indicate only light intensities,whereas multiphotosensor spectrometers require at least a chip-level assembly and can generate redundant signals for applications that do not need detailed spectral information.Inspired by human visual and psychological light perceptions,the compression of spectral information into representative intensities and colours may simplify spectrum processing at the device level.Here,we propose a concept of spectrum projection using a bandgap-gradient semiconductor cell for intensity and colour perception.Bandgap-gradient perovskites,prepared by a halide-exchanging method via dipping in a solution,are developed as the photoactive layer of the cell.The fabricated cell produces two output signals:one shows linear responses to both photon energy and flux,while the other depends on only photon flux.Thus,by combining the two signals,the single device can project the monochromatic and broadband spectra into the total photon fluxes and average photon energies(i.e.,intensities and hues),which are in good agreement with those obtained from a commercial photodetector and spectrometer.Under changing illumination in real time,the prepared device can instantaneously provide intensity and hue results.In addition,the flexibility and chemical/bio-sensing of the device via colour comparison are demonstrated.Therefore,this work shows a human visual-like method of spectrum projection and colour perception based on a single device,providing a paradigm for high-efficiency spectrum-processing applications. | Mei-Na Zhang Xiaohan Wu Antoine Riaud Xiao-Lin Wang Fengxian Xie Wen-Jun Liu Yongfeng Mei David Wei Zhang Shi-Jin Ding | 2020 | Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1: | 4 |

HSCs were assayed using fluorescent microscopy, real-time polymerase chain reaction, and western blotting. Moreover, a CCl_4-induced rat hepatic fibrosis model was established to investigate the in vivo effects. Hematoxylin and eosin, and Masson's trichrome were used to assess the histological changes. The expression of collagen Ⅰ and Ⅲ was assessed using immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis.RESULTS Elevated expression of PTEN gene reduced serum levels of alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase, decreased collagen deposition in the liver, and reduced hepatocyte necrosis. | 16 | Infliximab treatment in two Chinese patients with psoriatic arthritis显示文摘Psoriatic arthritis(PsA) is a rheumatoid factor(RF)-seronegative systemic inflammatory disorder associated with psoriasis.Current treatment for PsA in China is still focused on disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs(DMARDs).In this paper,we report two Chinese patients with active longstanding PsA treated with infliximab,a human-mouse chimeric monoclonal antibody against tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-α).The results show that infliximab acted quickly and effectively in relieving peripheral and axial symptoms and refractory skin lesions,even in recombinant human TNF-α receptor(rhTNFR)-resistant case.The take-home message from our cases is that infliximab is a useful therapeutic option for refractory PsA,especially when a patient has a combination of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.Further local evidence and experience must be accumulated in order to make anti-TNF-α therapy more accessible to PsA patients in China. | Xi XIE Jin-wei CHEN Fen LI Jing TIAN Jie-sheng GAO David ZHANG | 2010 | Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2010,11,10: | 3 |
