1The Homo sapiens Cave hominin site of Mulan Mountain,Jiangzhou District,Chongzuo,Guangxi with emphasis on its age显示文摘One of the most hotly debated and frontal issues in paleoanthropology focuses on the origins of modern humans. Recently, an incomplete hominin mandible with a distinctly weaker mental protuberance than modern human and a great variety of coexisting fossil mammals were unearthed from the Homo sapiens Cave of Mulan Mountain, Chongzuo, Guangxi. The mammalian fauna from the Homo sapiens Cave characterized by the combination of Elephas kiangnanensis, first occurring Elephas maixmus, and Megatapirus augustus, and strikingly different from the Early Pleistocene Gigantopithecus fauna and the Middle Pleistocene Ailuropoda-Stogodon fauna of South China could be regarded as an early representive of the typical Asian elephant fauna. Faunal analysis, biostratigraphic correlation, and, most importantly, U-series dating all consistently support an estimate of ca. 110 ka for the age of the fossil Homo sapiens and coexisting mammalian fauna, that is, the early Late Pleistocene. The fauna is mainly made up of tropical-subtropical elements, but grassland elements have a much greater variety than forest elements, which probably indicates a drier climate at that time. 2Epithelial ovarian cancer:An overview显示文摘Ovarian cancer is the second most common gyneco-logical cancer and the leading cause of death in the United States. In this article we review the diagnosis and current management of epithelial ovarian cancer which accounts for over 95 percent of the ovarian malignancies. We will present various theories about the potential origin of ovarian malignancies. We will discuss the genetic anomalies and syndromes that may cause ovarian cancers with emphasis on Breast cancer type 1/2 mutations. The pathology and pathogenesis of ovarian carcinoma will also be presented. 3Mechanosignaling activation of TGFβmaintains intervertebral disc homeostasis显示文摘Intervertebral disc(IVD) degeneration is the leading cause of disability with no disease-modifying treatment.IVD degeneration is associated with instable mechanical loading in the spine, but little is known about how mechanical stress regulates nucleus notochordal(NC) cells to maintain IVD homeostasis. Here we report that mechanical stress can result in excessive integrin α_vβ_6-mediated activation of transforming growth factor beta(TGFβ), decreased NC cell vacuoles, and increased matrix proteoglycan production, and results in degenerative disc disease(DDD). Knockout of TGFβ type II receptor(TβRII) or integrin α_v in the NC cells inhibited functional activity of postnatal NC cells and also resulted in DDD under mechanical loading.Administration of RGD peptide, TGFβ, and α_vβ_6-neutralizing antibodies attenuated IVD degeneration. Thus,integrin-mediated activation of TGFβ plays a critical role in mechanical signaling transduction to regulate IVD cell function and homeostasis. 6Utilization of longitudinal ultrasound to quantify joint soft-tissue changes in a mouse model of posttraumatic osteoarthritis显示文摘To assess the utility of longitudinal ultrasound(US) to quantify volumetric changes in joint soft tissues during the progression of posttraumatic osteoarthritis(PTOA) in mice, and validate the US results with histological findings. A longitudinal cohort of 3-month-old wild-type C57 BL/6 male mice received the Hulth-Telhag surgical procedure on right knee to induce PTOA, and sham surgery on their left knee as control. US scans were performed on both knees before, 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks post-surgery. Joint space volume and Power-Doppler(PD) volume were obtained from US images via Amira software. A parallel cross-sectional cohort of mice was killed at each US time point, and knee joints were subjected to histological analysis to obtain synovial soft-tissue area and OARSI scores. The correlation between US joint space volume and histological synovial soft-tissue area or OARSI score was assessed via linear regression analysis. US images indicated increased joint space volume in PTOA joints over time, which was associated with synovial inflammation and cartilage damage by histology. These changes started from 2 weeks post-surgery and gradually became more severe. No change was detected in sham joints. Increased joint space volume was significantly correlated with increased synovial soft-tissue area and the OARSI score(P o 0.001). PD signal was detected in the joint space of PTOA joints at 6 weeks post-surgery, which was consistent with the location of blood vessels that stained positively for CD31 and alpha-smooth muscle actin in the synovium.This study indicates that US is a cost-effective longitudinal outcome measure of volumetric and vascular changes in joint soft tissues during PTOA progression in mice, which positively correlates with synovial inflammation and cartilage damage.Hao Xu Echoe M Bouta Ronald W Wood Edward M Schwarz Yongjun Wang Lianping Xing 2017Bone Research2017,5,3:7
7Change patterns of oncomelanid snail burden in areas within the Yangtze River drainage after the three gorges dam operated显示文摘Background:An'integrated control'strategy has been implemented within seven provinces at highest risk for schistosomiasis along Yangtze River in Peoples'Republic of China(P.R.China)since 2004.Since O ncom elania hupensis is the only intermediate host of the blood fluke(Schistosom a japonicum),controlling the distribution of snails is considered an essential and effeaive way to reduce the risk of schistosomiasis infection.The study aimed to determine the snail area burden and annual trend among provinces with potential risk for schistosomiasis along the Yangtze River,above and below the Three Gorges Dam(TGD).Methods:This retrospective study utilized data previously collected from the National Parasitic Diseases Control Information Management System(NPDCIMS)on annual snail surveys from 2009 to 2017.Descriptive statistics were performed for analyzing the snail burden by provinces,counties,type of environmental location and year,and mapping was conducted to present the snails distribution.Results:From 2009 to 2017,the total snail infested area decreased by 4.22%,from 372253 hm^2 to 356553 hm^2 within the seven high risk provinces.The majority of snails were found in the marshland and lake regions,outside of control embankments.The total snail burden trend remained relatively stable in upstream regions above the TGD from 2010 to 2015,while the trend decreased within downstream regions during this period.In 2016 and 2017,the total snail burden trend increased in both upstream and downstream provinces,however,upstream saw a larger increase.From 2009 to 2017,there were a total of 5990 hm^2 of newly developed snail areas in the seven study provinces and the majority were concentrated in regions below the TGD,accounting for 5610 hm^2(93.70%).Conclusions:There has been a decline in total snail counts from 2009 to 2017.Meanwhile,new snail breeding areas were formed mainly within provinces downstream the TGD due to spread of snails,indicated that the oncomelanid snail would be difficult to completely eliminate.We suggest that the national schistosomiasis integrated control strategy,including mollusciding and environmental modification,will need to be enhanced significantly going forward to achieve a greater reduaion in snail burden and ultimately to achieve elimination.Si-Min Dai Jeffrey Edwards Zhou Guan Shan Lv Shi-Zhu Li Li-Juan Zhang Jun Feng Ning Feng Xiao-Nong Zhou Jing Xu 2019Infectious Diseases of Poverty2019,8,3:4

11OPERATIONAL TROPICAL CYCLONE FORECAST VERIFICATION PRACTICE IN THE WESTERN NORTH PACIFIC REGION显示文摘This paper summarizes results of a survey of the operational status of tropical cyclone(TC) forecast verifi-cation in the western North Pacific region, covering the Members of the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee, RSMC Tokyo-Typhoon Center, and JTWC. Results of the survey indicate that significant efforts have been focused on the verification of TC forecast guidance by operational forecast agencies in the region, either individually or through international cooperation. A variety of TC forecast verification products are available to the forecasters in either real time or in post-season through multiple means, with the main focus on the deterministic track and intensity forecasts. Only a few verification products are available for probabilistic forecasts. Verification of TC precipitation and high wind forecasts are also lacking sufficient attention in the region. 12Identifying the Risk of SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Environmental Monitoring in Airborne Infectious Isolation Rooms(AIIRs)显示文摘Healthcare workers(HCWs)are at high risk of occupational exposure to the new pandemic human coronavirus,SARSCoV-2,and are a source of nosocomial transmission in airborne infectious isolation rooms(AIIRs).Here,we performed comprehensive environmental contamination surveillance to evaluate the risk of viral transmission in AIIRs with 115 rooms in three buildings at the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center,Shanghai,during the treatment of 334 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2.The results showed that the risk of airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in AIIRs was low(1.62%,25/1544)due to the directional airflow and strong environmental hygiene procedures.However,we detected viral RNA on the surface of foot-operated openers and bathroom sinks in AIIRs(viral load:55.00–3154.50 copies/mL).This might be a source of contamination to connecting corridors and object surfaces through the footwear and gloves used by HCWs.The risk of infection was eliminated by the use of disposable footwear covers and the application of more effective environmental and personal hygiene measures.With the help of effective infection control procedures,none of 290 HCWs was infected when working in the AIIRs at this hospital.This study has provided information pertinent for infection control in AIIRs during the treatment of COVID-19 patients.Zhi-Gang Song Yan-Mei Chen Fan Wu Lin Xu Bang-Fang Wang Lei Shi Xiao Chen Fa-Hui Dai Jia-Lei She Jian-Min Chen Edward CHolmes Tong-Yu Zhu Yong-Zhen Zhang 2020Virologica Sinica2020,35,6:3
13Bendamustine treatment of Chinese patients with relapsed indolent non-Hodgkin lymphoma: a multicenter, open-label, single-arm, phase 3 study显示文摘Background:Bendamustine was approved in China on May 26th,2019 by the National Medical Product Administration for the treatment of indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma(NHL).The current study was the registration trial and the first reported evaluation of the efficacy,safety,and pharmacokinetics of bendamustine in Chinese adult patients with indolent B-cell NHL following relapse after chemotherapy and rituximab treatment.Methods:This was a prospective,multicenter,open-label,single-arm,phase 3 study(NCT01596621;C18083/3076)with a 2-year follow-up period.Eligible patients received bendamustine hydrochloride 120 mg/m2 infused intravenously on days 1 and 2 of each 21-day treatment cycle for at least six planned cycles(and up to eight cycles).The primary endpoint was the overall response rate(ORR);and secondary endpoints were duration of response(DoR),progression-free survival(PFS),safety,and pharmacokinetics.Patients were classified according to their best overall response after initiation of therapy.Proportions of patients in each response category(complete response[CR],partial response[PR],stable disease,or progressive disease)were summarized along with a twosided binomial exact 95%confidence intervals(CIs)for the ORR.Results:A total of 102 patients were enrolled from 20 centers between August 6th,2012,and June 18th,2015.At the time of the primary analysis,the ORR was 73%(95%CI:63%–81%)per Independent Review Committee(IRC)including 19%CR and 54%PR.With the follow-up period,the median DoR was 16.2 months by IRC and 13.4 months by investigator assessment;the median PFS was 18.6 months and 15.3 months,respectively.The most common non-hematologic adverse events(AEs)were gastrointestinal toxicity,pyrexia,and rash.Grade 3/4 neutropenia was reported in 76%of patients.Serious AEs were reported in 29 patients and five patients died during the study.Pharmacokinetic analysis indicated that the characteristics of bendamustine and its metabolites M3 and M4 were generally consistent with those reported for other ethnicities.Conclusion:Bendamustine is an active and effective therapy in Chinese patients with relapsed,indolent B-cell NHL,with a comparable risk/benefit relationship to that reported in North American patients.Yuan-Kai Shi Xiao-Nan Hong Jian-Liang Yang Wei Xu Hui-Qiang Huang Xiu-Bin Xiao Jun Zhu Dao-Bin Zhou Xiao-Hong Han Jian-Qiu Wu Ming-Zhi Zhang Jie Jin Xiao-Yan Ke Wei Li De-Pei Wu Shen-Miao Yang Xin Du Yong-Qian Jia Ai-Chun Liu Dai-Hong Liu Zhi-Xiang Shen Lian-Sheng Zhang Leonard James Edward Hellriegel 2021Chinese Medical Journal2021,,11:2

15Soil respiration under three different land use types in a tropical mountain region of China显示文摘Soil respiration (SR) Wis one of the largest contributors of terrestrial CO_2 to the atmosphere.Environmental as well as physicochemical parameters influence SR and thus, different land use practices impact the emissions of soil CO_2. In this study, we measured SR, bi-monthly, over a one-year period in a terrace tea plantation, a forest tea plantation and a secondary forest, in a subtropical mountain area in Xishuangbanna, China. Along with the measurement of SR rates, soil characteristics for each of the land use systems were investigated. Soil respiration rates in the different land use systems did not differ significantly during the dry season, ranging from2.7±0.2 μmol m^(-2) s^(-1) to 2.8±0.2 μmol m^(-2) s^(-1). During the wet season, however, SR rates were significantly larger in the terrace tea plantation(5.4±0.5 μmol m^(-2)s^(-1)) and secondary forest(4.9±0.4 μmol m^(-2)s^(-1)) than in the forest tea plantation(3.7±0.2 μmol m^(-2) s^(-1)).This resulted in significantly larger annual soil CO_2 emissions from the terrace tea and secondary forest,than from the forest tea plantation. It is likely that these differences in the SR rates are due to the 0.5times lower soil organic carbon concentrations in thetop mineral soil in the forest tea plantation, compared to the terrace tea plantation and secondary forest.Furthermore, we suggest that the lower sensitivity to temperature variation in the forest tea soil is a result of the lower soil organic carbon concentrations. The higher SR rates in the terrace tea plantation were partly due to weeding events, which caused CO_2 emission peaks that contributed almost 10% to the annual CO_2 flux. Our findings suggest that moving away from heavily managed tea plantations towards low-input forest tea can reduce the soil CO_2 emissions from these systems.
