Climate and litter C/N ratio constrain soil organic carbon accumulation显示文摘Soil organic carbon(SOC) plays critical roles in stabilizing atmospheric CO2 concentration, but the mechanistic controls on the amount and distribution of SOC on global scales are not well understood. In turn, this has hampered the ability to model global C budgets and to find measures to mitigate climate change. Here, based on the data from a large field survey campaign with 2600 plots across China’s forest ecosystems and a global collection of published data from forested land, we find that a low litter carbon-to-nitrogen ratio(C/N) and high wetness index(P/PET, precipitation-to-potentialevapotranspiration ratio) are the two factors that promote SOC accumulation, with only minor contributions of litter quantity and soil texture. The field survey data demonstrated that high plant diversity decreased litter C/N and thus indirectly promoted SOC accumulation by increasing the litter quality. We conclude that any changes in plant-community composition, plant-species richness and environmental factors that can reduce the litter C/N ratio, or climatic changes that increase wetness index, may promote SOC accumulation. The study provides a guideline for modeling the carbon cycle of various ecosystem scales and formulates the principle for land-based actions for mitigating the rising atmospheric CO2 concentration.Guoyi Zhou Shan Xu Philippe Ciais Stefano Manzoni Jingyun Fang Guirui Yu Xuli Tang Ping Zhou Wantong Wang Junhua Yan Gengxu Wang Keping Ma Shenggong Li Sheng Du Shijie Han Youxin Ma Deqiang Zhang Juxiu Liu Shizhong Liu Guowei Chu Qianmei Zhang Yuelin Li Wenjuan Huang Hai Ren Xiankai Lu Xiuzhi Chen 2019National Science Review2019,6,4:21
Effects of precipitation on soil organic carbon fractions in three subtropical forests in southern China显示文摘Aims The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of precipitation changes on soil organic carbon(SOC)fractions in subtropical forests where the precipitation pattern has been altered for decades. Methods We conducted field manipulations of precipitation, including ambient precipitation as a control(CK),double precipitation(DP)and no precipitation(NP),for 3 years in three forests with different stand ages(broadleaf forest[BF],mixed forest[MF]and pine forest[PF])in subtropical China. At the end of the experiment, soil samples were collected to assay SOC content, readily oxidizable organic carbon(ROC)and non-readily oxidizable organic carbon(NROC),as well as soil microbial biomass carbon(MBC),pH and total nitrogen content.Samples from the forest floors were also collected to analyze carbon(C)functional groups(i.e.alkyl C,aromatic C,O-alkyl C and carbonyl C).Furthermore, fine root biomass was measured periodically throughout the experiment.Important Findings Among the forests,ROC content did not exhibit any notable differences, while NROC content increased significantly with the stand age. This finding implied that the SOC accumulation observed in these forests resulted from the accumulation of NROC in the soil,a mechanism for SOC accumulation in the mature forests of southern China. Moreover,NP treatment led to significant reductions in both ROC and NROC content and therefore reduced the total SOC content in all of the studied forests.Such decreases may be due to the lower plant-derived C inputs(C quantity)and to the changes in SOC components(C quality)indicated by C functional groups analyses under NP treatment.DP treatment in all the forests also tended to decrease the SOC content, although the decreases were not statistically significant with the exception of SOC and ROC content in PF.This finding indicated that soils in MF and in BF may be more resistant to precipitation increases, possibly due to less water limitations under natural conditions in the two forests. Our results therefore highlight the different responses of SOC and its fractions to precipitation changes among the forests and suggest that further studies are needed to improve our understanding of SOC dynamics in such an important C sink region.Xiaomei Chen Deqiang Zhang Guohua Liang Qingyan Qiu Juxiu Liu Guoyi Zhou Shizhong Liu Guowei Chu Junhua Yan 2016Journal of Plant Ecology2016,9,1:4
Reduced turnover rate of topsoil organic carbon in old-growth forests:a case study in subtropical China显示文摘Background:Old-growth forests are irreplaceable with respect to climate change mitigation and have considerable carbon(C)sink potential in soils. However, the relationship between the soil organic carbon(SOC)turnover rate and forest development is poorly understood, which hinders our ability to assess the C sequestration capacity of soil in old-growth forests. Methods:In this study,we evaluated the SOC turnover rate by calculating the isotopic enrichment factor β(defined as the slope of the regression between ^(13)C natural abundance and log-transformed C concentrations)along 0-30 cm soil profiles in three successional forests in subtropical China.A lower β(steeper slope)is associated with a higher turnover rate. The three forests were a 60-year-old P.massoniana forest(PF),a 100-year-old coniferous and broadleaved mixed forest(MF),and a 400-year-old monsoon evergreen broadleaved forest(BF).We also analyzed the soil physicochemical properties in these forests to examine the dynamics of SOC turnover during forest succession and the main regulators. Results:The β value for the upper 30-cm soils in the BF was significantly(p<0.05)higher than that in the PF,in addition to the SOC stock, although there were nonsignificant differences between the BF and MF.The β value was significantly(p<0.05)positively correlated with the soil recalcitrance index, total nitrogen, and available nitrogen contents but was significantly(p<0.01)negatively correlated with soil pH.Conclusions:Our results demonstrate that SOC has lower turnover rates in old-growth forests, accompanied by higher soil chemical recalcitrance, nitrogen status, and lower soil pH.This finding helps to elucidate the mechanism underlying C sequestration in old-growth forest soils, and emphasizes the important value of old-growth forests among global C sinks.Xin Xiong Juxiu Liu Guoyi Zhou Qi Deng Huiling Zhang Guowei Chu Ze Meng Deqiang Zhang 2021Forest Ecosystems2021,8,4:4

KLF4 facilitates chromatin accessibility remodeling in porcine early embryos显示文摘Chromatin accessibility remodeling driven by pioneer factors is critical for the development of early embryos.Current studies have illustrated several pioneer factors as being important for agricultural animals, but what are the pioneer factors and how the pioneer factors remodel the chromatin accessibility in porcine early embryos is not clear.By employing low-input DNase-seq(liDNase-seq),we profiled the landscapes of chromatin accessibility in porcine early embryos and uncovered a unique chromatin accessibility reprogramming pattern during porcine preimplantation development. Our data revealed that KLF4 played critical roles in remodeling chromatin accessibility in porcine early embryos.Knocking down of KLF4 led to the reduction of chromatin accessibility in early embryos, whereas KLF4 overexpression promoted the chromatin openness in porcine blastocysts.Furthermore,KLF4 deficiency resulted in mitochondrial dysfunction and developmental failure of porcine embryos. In addition,we found that overexpression of KLF4 in blastocysts promoted lipid droplet accumulation, whereas knockdown of KLF4 disrupted this process.Taken together, our study revealed the chromatin accessibility dynamics and identified KLF4 as a key regulator in chromatin accessibility and cellular metabolism during porcine preimplantation embryo development.Wei Zhu Guowei Bu Ruifeng Hu Jixiang Zhang Lianyong Qiao Kai Zhou Tingting Wang Qiao Li Jingjing Zhang Linhui Wu Yali Xie Taotao Hu Shichun Yang Jiaqi Guan Xiaoyu Chu Juanjuan Shi Xia Zhang Falong Lu Xin Liu Yi-Liang Miao 2024Science China(Life Sciences)2024,67,1:0
Brian Njoroge Yuelin Li Dennis Otieno Shizhong Liu Simin Wei Ze Meng Qianmei Zhang Deqiang Zhang Juxiu Liu Guowei Chu Fasih Ullah Haider John Tenhunen 2023Journal of Plant Ecology2023,16,1:0
Morphological characteristics of tree crowns of Cunninghamia lanceolata var. Luotian显示文摘The structural characteristics of the tree crowns of Cunninghamia lanceolata var. Luotian(herein, Luotian), a natural variety of C. lanceolata(Chinese-fir, herein Lanceolata) in China, were analyzed using trunk and branch measurements and biomass determinations. Samples from two typical cultivated varietal populations were collected, including twenty-six 15–23-year-old trees of Luotian from a plantation, and nine 16–23-year-old trees of Lanceolata. Our results show that Luotian and Lanceolata samples differed significantly in crown structure, morphological indices, and biomass:(1) the oldest live branches on Luotian trees were 5–6 years old and 8–11 years old on Lanceolata. The ages of the live branches were not affected by the ages of the Luotian trees, while live branch ages increased with ages of Lanceolata trees;(2) the maximumbranching order of Luotian was level two. Compared to Lanceolata, the average number of first-order lateral branches(i.e., branches emerging from the trunk) and the number of first-order lateral branch whorls per sample tree were 12.9% and 32.2% lower, respectively, in Luotian. However, the average number of branches within a single whorl was 21.8% greater in Luotian;the average number of branch whorls at crown height was 51.1% greater. Thus, the Luotian variety has thicker branches;(3) the average lateral branch angles in Luotian and Lanceolata sample trees were 105.2° and 61.4°, respectively. The branch angles in 53.0% of lateral branches on Luotian ranged from105° to 135°, but 30° to 90° in 96% of the lateral branches on Lanceolata. Within the same crown layer, the average branch angle was 1.6–2.2 times greater in Luotian, and the angle was directly proportional to crown thickness;(4) the average base diameter and branch length on Luotian were1.3 cm and 75.8 cm, respectively, and 1.6 cm and112.2 cm for Lanceolata. For individual trees, branch growth differed significantly(p < 0.01) between Luotian and Lanceolata. However, the lateral branches grew at a similar rate among Luotian trees of different ages;(5) the average height to the lowest live branch on Luotian was128.3% greater than on Lanceolata, resulting in a significant difference(p < 0.01) in crown size. Compared to the crowns on Lanceolata, the Luotian crowns were 45.3%higher and 41.1% wider, and the surface area, volume, and growth of the crown were 27.0%, 11.4%, and 2.4 times greater than for Lanceolata, respectively;and,(6) the biomass of Luotian and Lanceolata sample trees also differed significantly. The mean crown, branch, and leaf biomass for Luotian was 40.0%, 25.2%, and 54.1% of those for Lanceolata, respectively. However, the leaf biomass in each layer of the Luotian crown was higher thanthat of Lanceolata, and leaf biomass increased with crown thickness.Yezhou Xu Chaoqun Du Guowei Huang Zhenfang Li Xiangyang Xu Jingjin Zheng Chu Wu 2020Journal of Forestry Research2020,31,3:0
Methylation of PLK1 by SET7/9 ensures accurate kinetochore–microtubule dynamics显示文摘Faithful segregation of mitotic chromosomes requires bi-orientation of sister chromatids, which relies on the sensing of correct attachments between spindle microtubules and kinetochores. Although the mechanisms underlying PLK1 activation have been extensively studied, the regulatory mechanisms that couple PLK1 activity to accurate chromosome segregation are not well understood. In particular, PLK1 is implicated in stabilizing kinetochore–microtubule attachments, but how kinetochore PLK1 activity is regulated to avoid hyperstabilized kinetochore–microtubules in mitosis remains elusive. Here, we show that kinetochore PLK1 kinase activity is modulated by SET7/9 via lysine methylation during early mitosis. The SET7/9-elicited dimethylation occurs at the Lys191 of PLK1, which tunes down its activity by limiting ATP utilization. Overexpression of the non-methylatable PLK1 mutant or chemical inhibition of SET7/9 methyltransferase activity resulted in mitotic arrest due to destabilized kinetochore–microtubule attachments. These data suggest that kinetochore PLK1 is essential for stable kinetochore–microtubule attachments and methylation by SET7/9 promotes dynamic kinetochore–microtubule attachments for accurate error correction. Our findings define a novel homeostatic regulation at the kinetochore that integrates protein phosphorylation and methylation with accurate chromosome segregation for maintenance of genomic stability.Ruoying Yu Huihui Wu Hazrat Ismail Shihao Du Jun Cao Jianyu Wang Tarsha Ward Fengrui Yang Ping Gui Mahboob Ali Lingluo Chu Fei Mo Qi Wang Youjun Chu Jianye Zang Yun Zhao Mingliang Ye Guowei Fang Peng RChen Zhen Dou Xinjiao Gao Wenwen Wang Xing Liu Xuebiao Yao 2020Journal of Molecular Cell Biology2020,12,6:0
Plant community and soil properties drive arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal diversity:A case study in tropical forests显示文摘The mutual interdependence of plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)is important in carbon and mineral nutrient exchange. However,an understanding of how AMF community assemblies vary in different forests and the underlying factors regulating AMF diversity in native tropical forests is largely unknown. We explored the AMF community assembly and the underlying factors regulating AMF diversity in a young(YF)and an old-growth forest(OF)in a tropical area. The results showed that a total of 53 AMF phylogroups(virtual taxa,VTs)were detected,38±1 in the OF and 34±1 in the YF through high-throughput sequencing of 18S rDNA,and AMF community composition was significantly different between the two forests.A structural equation model showed that the forest traits indirectly influenced AMF diversity via the plant community, soil properties and microbes, which explained 44.2%of the total observed variation in AMF diversity.Plant diversity and biomass were the strongest predictors of AMF diversity, indicating that AMF diversity was dominantly regulated by biotic factors at our study sites. Our study indicated that forest community traits have a predictable effect on the AMF community;plant community traits and soil properties are particularly important for determining AMF diversity in tropical forests.Jing Zhang Changxin Quan Lingling Ma Guowei Chu Zhanfeng Liu Xuli Tang 2021Soil Ecology Letters2021,3,1:0
