Spatio-temporal changes in biomass carbon sinks in China's forests from 1977 to 2008显示文摘Forests play a leading role in regional and global carbon (C) cycles. Detailed assessment of the temporal and spatial changes in C sinks/sources of China's forests is critical to the estimation of the national C budget and can help to constitute sustainable forest management policies for climate change. In this study, we explored the spatio-temporal changes in forest biomass C stocks in China between 1977 and 2008, using six periods of the national forest inventory data. According to the definition of the forest inventory, China's forest was categorized into three groups: forest stand, economic forest, and bamboo forest. We estimated forest biomass C stocks for each inventory period by using continuous biomass expansion factor (BEF) method for forest stands, and the mean biomass density method for economic and bamboo forests. As a result, China's forests have accumulated biomass C (i.e., biomass C sink) of 1896 Tg (1Tg=1012g) during the study period, with 1710, 108 and 78 Tg C in forest stands, and economic and bamboo forests, respectively. Annual forest biomass C sink was 70.2 Tg Ca-1 , offsetting 7.8% of the contemporary fossil CO2 emissions in the country. The results also showed that planted forests have functioned as a persistent C sink, sequestrating 818 Tg C and accounting for 47.8% of total C sink in forest stands, and that the old-, mid- and young-aged forests have sequestrated 930, 391 and 388 Tg C from 1977 to 2008. Our results suggest that China's forests have a big potential as biomass C sink in the future because of its large area of planted forests with young-aged growth and low C density.GUO ZhaoDi HU HuiFeng LI Pin LI NuYun FANG JingYun 2013Science China(Life Sciences)2013,56,7:44
Terrestrial carbon sinks in China and around the world and their contribution to carbon neutrality显示文摘Enhancing the terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink(referred to as terrestrial C sink) is an important way to slow down the continuous increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2)) concentration and to achieve carbon neutrality target. To better understand the characteristics of terrestrial C sinks and their contribution to carbon neutrality, this review summarizes major progress in terrestrial C budget researches during the past decades, clarifies spatial patterns and drivers of terrestrial C sources and sinks in China and around the world, and examines the role of terrestrial C sinks in achieving carbon neutrality target.According to recent studies, the global terrestrial C sink has been increasing from a source of (-0.2±0.9) Pg C yr^(-1)(1 Pg=1015g)in the 1960s to a sink of (1.9±1.1) Pg C yr^(-1) in the 2010s.By synthesizing the published data,we estimate terrestrial C sink of 0.20–0.25 Pg C yr^(-1) in China during the past decades, and predict it to be 0.15–0.52 Pg C yr^(-1) by 2060.The terrestrial C sinks are mainly located in the mid-and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, while tropical regions act as a weak C sink or source. The C balance differs much among ecosystem types:forest is the major C sink;shrubland, wetland and farmland soil act as C sinks;and whether the grassland functions as C sink or source remains unclear.Desert might be a C sink, but the magnitude and the associated mechanisms are still controversial.Elevated atmospheric CO_(2) concentration, nitrogen deposition, climate change, and land cover change are the main drivers of terrestrial C sinks, while other factors such as fires and aerosols would also affect ecosystem C balance. The driving factors of terrestrial C sink differ among regions.Elevated CO_(2) concentration and climate change are major drivers of the C sinks in North America and Europe, while afforestation and ecological restoration are additionally important forcing factors of terrestrial C sinks in China. For future studies,we recommend the necessity for intensive and long-term ecosystem C monitoring over broad geographic scale to improve terrestrial biosphere models for accurately evaluating terrestrial C budget and its dynamics under various climate change and policy scenarios.Yuanhe Yang Yue Shi Wenjuan Sun Jinfeng Chang Jianxiao Zhu Leiyi Chen Xin Wang Yanpei Guo Hongtu Zhang Lingfei Yu Shuqing Zhao Kang Xu Jiangling Zhu Haihua Shen Yuanyuan Wang Yunfeng Peng Xia Zhao Xiangping Wang Huifeng Hu Shiping Chen Mei Huang Xuefa Wen Shaopeng Wang Biao Zhu Shuli Niu Zhiyao Tang Lingli Liu Jingyun Fang 2022Science China(Life Sciences)2022,65,5:32
Global leaf nitrogen and phosphorus stoichiometry and their scaling exponent显示文摘Leaf nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P) concentrations constrain photosynthetic and metabolic processes, growth and the productivity of plants. Their stoichiometry and scaling relationships regulate the allocation of N and P from subcellular to organism, and even ecosystem levels, and are crucial to the modelling of plant growth and nutrient cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. Prior work has revealed a general biogeographic pattern of leaf N and P stoichiometric relationships and shown that leaf N scales roughly as two-thirds the power of P. However, determining whether and how leaf N and P stoichiometries, especially their scaling exponents, change with functional groups and environmental conditions requires further verification. In this study, we compiled a global data set and documented the global leaf N and P concentrations and the N:P ratios by functional group, climate zone and continent. The global overall mean leaf N and P concentrations were 18.9 mg g^(-1) and 1.2 mg g^(-1), respectively, with significantly higher concentrations in herbaceous than woody plants(21.72 mg g^(-1) vs. 18.22 mg g^(-1) for N; and 1.64 mg g^(-1) vs. 1.10 mg g^(-1) for P). Both leaf N and P showed higher concentrations at high latitudes than low latitudes. Among six continents, Europe had the highest N and P concentrations(20.79 and 1.54 mg g^(-1)) and Oceania had the smallest values(10.01 and 0.46 mg g^(-1)). These numerical values may be used as a basis for the comparison of other individual studies. Further, we found that the scaling exponent varied significantly across different functional groups, latitudinal zones, ecoregions and sites. The exponents of herbaceous and woody plants were 0.659 and0.705, respectively, with significant latitudinal patterns decreasing from tropical to temperate to boreal zones. At sites with a sample size ≥10, the values fluctuated from 0.366 to 1.928, with an average of 0.841.Several factors including the intrinsic attributes of different life forms, P-related growth rates and relative nutrient availability of soils likely account for the inconstant exponents of leaf N vs. P scaling relationships.Di Tian Zhengbing Yan Karl J.Niklas Wenxuan Han Jens Kattge Peter B.Reich Yongkai Luo Yahan Chen Zhiyao Tang Huifeng Hu Ian J.Wright Bernhard Schmid Jingyun Fang 2018National Science Review2018,5,5:24
Temperature and substrate availability regulate soil respiration in the tropical mountain rainforests,Hainan Island,China显示文摘Aims Tropical forest plays a key role in global C cycle;however, there are few studies on the C budget in the tropical rainforests in Asia. This study aims to(i)reveal the seasonal patterns of total soil respiration(R_(T)),litter respiration(R_(L))and soil respiration without surface organic litter(R_(NL))in the primary and secondary Asian tropical mountain rainforests and(ii)quantify the effects of soil temperature, soil moisture and substrate availability on soil respiration. Methods The seasonal dynamics of soil CO_(2) efflux was measured by an automatic chamber system(Li-8100),within the primary and secondary tropical mountain rainforests located at the Jianfengling National Reserve in Hainan Island,China. The litter removal treatment was used to assess the contribution of litter to belowground CO_(2) production.Important Findings The annual R_(T) was higher in the primary forest(16.73±0.87 Mg C ha−1)than in the secondary forest(15.10±0.26 Mg C ha−1).The rates of R_(T),R_(NL) and R_(L) were all significantly higher in the hot and wet season(May–October)than those in the cool and dry season(November–April).Soil temperature at 5cm depth could explain 55–61%of the seasonal variation in R_(T),and the temperature sensitivity index(Q_(10))ranked by R_(L)(Q_(10)=3.39)>R_(T)(2.17)>R_(NL)(1.76)in the primary forest and by R_(L)(4.31)>R_(T)(1.86)>R_(NL)(1.58)in the secondary forest. The contribution of R_(L) to R_(T) was 22–23%,while litter input and R_(T) had 1 month time lag.In addition, the seasonal variation of R_(T) was mainly determined by soil temperature and substrate availability. Our findings suggested that global warming and increased substrate availability are likely to cause considerable losses of soil C in the tropical forests.Zhang Zhou Lai Jiang Enzai Du Huifeng Hu Yide Li Dexiang Chen Jingyun Fang 2013Journal of Plant Ecology2013,6,5:8
Latitudinal pattern and the driving factors of leaf functional traits in 185 shrub species across eastern China显示文摘Aims To explore the pattern of the leaf functional traits of shrub species along a latitudinal gradient in eastern China and determine the driv-ing factors of leaf trait variation at a large scale. Methods We investigated the leaf thickness(LT),leaf area(LA),specific leaf area(SLA)and leaf dry mass content(LDMC)of 185 shrub species from 13 sites across eastern China. The trends of these four-leaf traits were ana-lyzed with respect to latitude, and the differences between different life forms(e.g.,evergreen and deciduous)and habitats(e.g.,understory and typical)were compared. We quantified the effects of the plant life forms and environmental factors on the leaf traits via mixed-model analyses.Important Findings The LT and LA decreased, whilst and the LDMC increased,as the latitude increased, and significant differences in these traits were observed between the different plant life forms. The LT and LA were smaller, whereas the SLA and LDMC were larger in decidu-ous shrubs than in evergreen shrubs.Among the different habitats, the LA and SLA were larger, while the LDMC was smaller in under-story shrubs than in typical shrub species. These results indicate that typical shrub species are better adapted to drier environments,as indicated by a reduced LT and increased LDMC.Furthermore, general linear models showed that variations in the four-leaf traits with respect to latitude were mainly caused by a shift in plant life forms.Yongkai Luo Huifeng Hu Mengying Zhao He Li Shangshi Liu Jingyun Fang 2019Journal of Plant Ecology2019,12,1:7
Family-level leaf nitrogen and phosphorus stoichiometry of global terrestrial plants显示文摘Leaf nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P) concentrations are critical for photosynthesis, growth, reproduction and other ecological processes of plants. Previous studies on large-scale biogeographic patterns of leaf N and P stoichiometric relationships were mostly conducted using data pooled across taxa, while family/genus-level analyses are rarely reported. Here, we examined global patterns of family-specific leaf N and P stoichiometry using a global data set of 12,716 paired leaf N and P records which includes 204 families, 1,305 genera, and 3,420 species. After determining the minimum size of samples(i.e., 35 records), we analyzed leaf N and P concentrations, N:P ratios and N^P scaling relationships of plants for 62 families with 11,440 records. The numeric values of leaf N and P stoichiometry varied significantly across families and showed diverse trends along gradients of mean annual temperature(MAT) and mean annual precipitation(MAP). The leaf N and P concentrations and N:P ratios of 62 families ranged from 6.11 to 30.30 mg g–1, 0.27 to 2.17 mg g–1, and 10.20 to 35.40, respectively. Approximately 1/3–1/2 of the families(22–35 of 62) showed a decrease in leaf N and P concentrations and N:P ratios with increasing MAT or MAP, while the remainder either did not show a significant trend or presented the opposite pattern. Family-specific leaf N^P scaling exponents did not converge to a certain empirical value, with a range of 0.307–0.991 for 54 out of 62 families which indicated a significant N^P scaling relationship. Our results for the first time revealed large variation in the family-level leaf N and P stoichiometry of global terrestrial plants and that the stoichiometric relationships for at least one-third of the families were not consistent with the global trends reported previously. The numeric values of the family-specific leaf N and P stoichiometry documented in the current study provide critical synthetic parameters for biogeographic modeling and for further studies on the physiological and ecological mechanisms underlying the nutrient use strategies of plants from different phylogenetic taxa.Di Tian Zhengbing Yan Suhui Ma Yuehong Ding Yongkai Luo Yahan Chen Enzai Du Wenxuan Han Emoke Dalma Kovacs Haihua Shen Huifeng Hu Jens Kattge Bernhard Schmid Jingyun Fang 2019Science China(Life Sciences)2019,62,8:7
Species richness and composition of shrub-encroached grasslands in relation to environmental factors in northern China显示文摘Aims Shrub encroachment has taken place in many of China’s northern grasslands. This study attempts to answer the following questions:which plant communities are present in these shrub-encroached grasslands(SEGs)?What are the species richness and composition of these communities?Which environmental factors determine the spatial distribution thereof? Methods We investigated the community characteristics of 255 SEG plots with a size of 20 m×20 m at 69 locations across grasslands in northern China. In each plot, paired 1-m^(2) quadrats were estab-lished within shrub patches and the neighbouring grassy matrix to record herb species composition. The quantitative character-istics(abundance,coverage and height)of herbs were meas-ured in 0.25-m2 subquadrats, and soil samples were collected in the quadrats.Two-way indicator species analysis(TWINSPAN),detrended canonical analysis(DCA)and canonical correspond-ence analysis(CCA)were used for community clustering and ordination.Important Findings The DCA and TWINSPAN results suggested that the SEGs in northern China can be divided into six community types:Potentilla fruticosa+Carex atrofusca,Spiraea hypericifolia+Festuca ovina,Caragana acanthophylla+Stipa sareptana,Caragana microphylla+Leymus chinensis,Caragana microphylla+Stipa klemenzii and Caragana tibetica+Cleistogenes songorica. At a regional scale, climate and soil nutrients controlled the spatial patterns of species richness and community composition of the SEGs in northern China.Temperature exerted a negative impact, whereas precipitation and nutrients had positive effects on species richness.Among the environmental factors used, climate was the major controller of the variations in commu-nity structure. These results provide new insights into the community composition of SEGs in China and enrich the global dataset of SEGs.Luhong Zhou Haihua Shen Leiyi Chen He Li Pujin Zhang Xia Zhao Taoyu Liu Shangshi Liu Aijun Xing Huifeng Hu Jingyun Fang 2019Journal of Plant Ecology2019,12,1:3

Yield and quality properties of silage maize and their influencing factors in China显示文摘Silage maize(Zea mays L.) is one of the most important forages in the world, and its yield and quality properties are critical parameters for livestock production and assessment of forage values. However, relationships between its yield and quality properties and the controlling factors are not well documented. In this study, we collected 5,663 observations from 196 publications across the country to identify the relationships between yield and quality properties of silage maize and to assess the impact of management practices and climatic factors on its yield and quality in China. The average dry matter yield of silage maize was(19.98±6.93) Mg ha^(-1), and the average value of crude protein, ether extract, crude ash, crude fiber, acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber, nitrogen-free extract, and relative feed value was 7.86%±1.71%, 2.53%±1.01%, 5.05%±1.66%,23.97%±6.34%, 27.62%±7.12%, 51.60%±9.85%, 59.68%±7.72%, and 131.17±31.49, respectively. In general, its nutritive value decreased as its yield increased. Increasing planting density could increase the yield but inhibit the nutritive values, while increasing fertilization could benefit the nutritive values. Geographically, the yield increased and the nutritive value decreased from warm(south) to cold(north) regions. The length of growth duration was a major controlling factor for the patterns of these properties. Our findings provide insights for police-makers to make strategy for achieving high yield and good quality of silage maize and help local people to implement better management practices.Mengying Zhao Yinping Feng Yue Shi Haihua Shen Huifeng Hu Yongkai Luo Longchao Xu Jie Kang Aijun Xing Shaopeng Wang Jingyun Fang 2022Science China(Life Sciences)2022,65,8:2
Effect of fire intensity on active organic and total soil carbon in a Larix gmelinii forest in the Daxing'anling Mountains,Northeastern China显示文摘Studying contents and seasonal dynamics of active organic carbon in the soil is an important method for revealing the turnover and regulation mechanism of soil carbon pool. Through 3 years of field sampling and lab analysis, we studied the seasonal variations, content differences, and interrelationships of total organic carbon(TOC), light fraction organic carbon(LFOC), and particulate organic carbon(POC) of the soil in the forest areas burned with different fire intensities in the Daxing'anling Mountains. The mean TOC content in the low-intensity burned area was greater than that in the unburned area,moderate-intensity, and high-intensity burned areas in June and November(P<0.05). LFOC and POC in the lowintensity burned area were greater than that in either moderate-intensity or high-intensity burned areas, with significant differences in LFOC in September and November(P <0.05). A significant difference in LFOC between the unburned and burned areas was only found in July(P < 0.05). However, the differences in POC between the unburned and burned areas were not significant in all the whole seasons(P >0.05). Soil LFOC and POC varied significantly with the seasons(P< 0.05) in the Daxing'anling Mountains. Significant linear relationships were observed between soil TOC, LFOC, and POC, which were positively correlated with soil nitrogen and negatively correlated with soil temperature in the Daxing'anling Mountains.Yunmin Wei Haiqing Hu Jiabao Sun Qiang Yuan Long Sun Huifeng Liu 2016Journal of Forestry Research2016,27,6:2

The measurement of internal surface characteristics of fuel nozzle orifices using the synchrotron X-ray micro CT technology显示文摘The design of fuel nozzle orifices at micrometer scales is crucial for generating desired fuel spray patterns, and consequently optimizing fuel combustion and emission in internal combustion engines. Although there have been several recent advancements in the characterization of orifice internal geometries, quantitative studies on the orifice internal wall surface characteristics are still challeges due to the lack of effective measuring methods. A new method for quantifying the internal wall surface characteristics of fuel nozzle micro-orifices is presented in this study to achieve a better understanding and prediction of spray characteristics: Firstly, by using the synchrotron X-ray micro CT technology, a three-dimensional digital model of the fuel nozzle tip was constructed. Secondly, a data post-processing technique was then applied to unfold the orifice internal wall surface to a flat base plane. Finally, the conventional surface characteristic quantification techniques can be used to evaluate the wall surface characteristics. Two diesel nozzles with identical orifice geometry design but different hydraulic grinding time were measured using this method. One nozzle was hydro-ground for 2 s while the other was not. The internal wall surfaces of the two orifices were successfully unfolded to base planes and their surface characteristics were respectively analyzed. The surface fluctuation data were perfectly reproduced by a Gaussian distribution function. The standard deviations of the distribution demonstrate the fluctuation range and the distribution of the entire surface fluctuation profiles. As an effective parameter to evaluate the hydraulic grinding process and the spray behaviors, the standard deviation was considered feasible for the analysis of the orifice internal wall surface characteristics.LI ZhiLong ZHAO WenBo WU ZhiJun GONG HuiFeng HU ZongJie DENG Jun LI LiGuang 2018Science China(Technological Sciences)2018,61,11:1

Pull-out Behaviour of Axially Loaded Screwed-in Threaded Rods Embedded in CLT Elements: Experimental Study显示文摘Experimental investigation on the pull-out behaviour, including the withdrawal capacity, slip stiffness and inter-facial shear stress,of axially loaded screwed-in threaded rod embedded in cross laminated timber(CLT)was con-ducted.Specimens with varying embedment length and different number of threaded rods were tested in this study. To prevent premature splitting failure of timber, some specimens were reinforced in the direction perpen-dicular to the timber grain with self-tapping screws.Test results showed that the screwed-in threaded rod con-nections exhibited good pull-out behaviour with high withdrawal capacity and slip stiffness.Within a certain range, the withdrawal capacity increases considerably with the increase of embedment length, while the average interfacial shear stress shows the opposite tendency. The self-tapping screws played an important role on reducing the splitting of the timber and improving the withdrawal capacity and slip stiffness of the screwed-in threaded rod.Additionally, for the specimens with self-tapping screw reinforcements, the improvement of withdrawal capacity and stiffness when increasing the number of threaded rods are much more obvious than that of the speci-mens without the self-tapping screws, due to the change of failure modes.Huifeng Yang Junfeng Ji Haotian Tao Benkai Shi Junbin Hu Bo Wen 2022Journal of Renewable Materials2022,10,1:0
The red/far-red light photoreceptor FvePhyB regulates tissue elongation and anthocyanin accumulation in woodland strawberry显示文摘Light is an important environmental signal that influences plant growth and development.Among the photoreceptors, phytochromes can sense red/far-red light to coordinate various biological processes. However, their functions in strawberry are not yet known. In this study,we identified an EMS mutant, named P8,in woodland strawberry(Fragaria vesca)that showed greatly increased plant height and reduced anthocyanin content.Mapping-by-sequencing revealed that the causal mutation in FvePhyB leads to premature termination of translation. The light treatment assay revealed that FvePhyB is a bona fide red/far-red light photoreceptor,as it specifically inhibits hypocotyl length under red light.Transcriptome analysis showed that the FvePhyB mutation affects the expression levels of genes involved in hormone synthesis and signaling and anthocyanin biosynthesis in petioles and fruits. The srl mutant with a longer internode is caused by a mutation in the DELLA gene FveRGA1(Repressor of GA1)in the gibberellin pathway. We found that the P8 srl double mutant has much longer internodes than srl, suggesting a synergistic role of FvePhyB and FveRGA1 in this process.Taken together, these results demonstrate the important role of FvePhyB in regulating plant architecture and anthocyanin content in woodland strawberry.Qi Gao Shaoqiang Hu Xiaoli Wang Fu Han Huifeng Luo Zhongchi Liu Chunying Kang 2023Horticulture Research2023,10,12:0
