1Clay minerals in surface sediments of the Pearl River drainage basin and their contribution to the South China Sea显示文摘Clay minerals have played a significant role in the study of the East Asian monsoon evolution in the South China Sea by being able to track oceanic current variations and to reveal contemporaneous pa- leoclimatic changes prevailing in continental source areas.As one of the most important rivers input- ting terrigenous matters to the northern South China Sea,the Pearl River was not previously paid at- tention to from the viewpoint of clay mineralogy.This paper presents a detailed study on clay minerals in surface sediments collected from the Pearl River drainage basin(including all three main channels, various branches,and the Lingdingyang in the estuary)by using the X-ray diffraction(XRD)method. The results indicate that the clay mineral assemblage consists dominantly of kaolinite(35%-65%), lesser abundance of chlorite(20%-35%)and illite(12%-42%),and very scare smectite occurrences (generally<5%).Their respective distribution does not present any obvious difference throughout the Pearl River drainage basin.However,downstream the Pearl River to the northern South China Sea,the clay mineral assemblage varies significantly:kaolinite decreases gradually,smectite and illite increase gradually.Additionally,illite chemistry index steps down and illite crystallinity steps up.These varia- tions indicate the contribution of major kaolinite,lesser illite and chlorite,and very scarce smectite to the northern South China Sea from the Pearl River drainage basin.The maximum contribution of clay minerals from the Pearl River is 72%to the northern margin and only 15%to the northern slope of the South China Sea.In both glacials and interglacials,kaolinite indicates that the ability of mechanical erosion occurred in the Pearl River drainage basin.LIU ZhiFei Christophe COLIN HUANG Wei CHEN Zhong Alain TRENTESAUX CHEN JianFang 2007Chinese Science Bulletin2007,52,8:33

4Roles of a sustained activation of NCED3 and the synergistic regulation of ABA biosynthesis and catabolism in ABA signal production in Arabidopsis显示文摘ABA, acting as a stress signal, plays crucial roles in plant resistance to water stress. Because ABA signal production is based on ABA biosynthesis, the regulation of NCED, a key enzyme in the ABA biosynthesis pathway, is normally thought of as the sole factor controlling ABA signal production. Here we demonstrate that ABA catabolism in combination with a synergistic regulation of ABA biosynthesis plays a crucial role in governing ABA signal production. Water stress induced a significant accumulation of ABA, which exhibited different patterns in detached and attached leaves. ABA catabolism followed a temporal trend of exponential decay for both basic and stress ABA, and there was little difference in the catabolic half-lives of basic ABA and stress ABA. Thus, the absolute rate of ABA catabolism, i.e. the amount of ABA catabolized per unit time, increases with increased ABA accumulation. From the dynamic processes of ABA biosynthesis and catabolism, it can be inferred that stress ABA accumulation may be governed by a synergistic regulation of all the steps in the ABA biosynthesis pathway. Moreover, to maintain an elevated level of stress ABA sustained activation of NCED3 should be required. This inference was supported by further findings that the genes encoding major enzymes in the ABA biosynthesis pathway, e.g. NCED3, AAO3 and ABA3 were all activated by water stress, and with ABA accumulation progressing, the expressions of NCED3, AAO3 and ABA3 remained activated. 5Remodeling the blood–brain barrier microenvironment by natural products for brain tumor therapy显示文摘Brain tumor incidence shows an upward trend in recent years; brain tumors account for 5% of adult tumors, while in children, this figure has increased to 70%. Moreover, 20%–30% of malignant tumors will eventually metastasize into the brain. Both benign and malignant tumors can cause an increase in intracranial pressure and brain tissue compression, leading to central nervous system(CNS) damage which endangers the patients' lives. Despite the many approaches to treating brain tumors and the progress that has been made, only modest gains in survival time of brain tumor patients have been achieved. At present, chemotherapy is the treatment of choice for many cancers, but the special structure of the blood–brain barrier(BBB) limits most chemotherapeutic agents from passing through the BBB and penetrating into tumors in the brain. The BBB microenvironment contains numerous cell types, including endothelial cells, astrocytes, peripheral cells and microglia, and extracellular matrix(ECM). Many chemical components of natural products are reported to regulate the BBB microenvironment near brain tumors and assist in their treatment. 6Potential targets for protecting against hippocampal cell apoptosis after transient cerebral ischemiareperfusion injury in aged rats显示文摘Mitochondria play an important role in neuronal apoptosis caused by cerebral ischemia, and the role is mediated by the expression of mitochondrial proteins. This study investigated the involvement of mitochondrial proteins in hippocampal cell apoptosis after transient cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in aged rats using a comparative proteomics strategy. Our experimental results show that the aged rat brain is sensitive to ischemia-reperfusion injury and that transient ischemia led to cell apoptosis in the hippocampus and changes in memory and cognition of aged rats. Differential proteomics analysis suggested that this phenomenon may be mediated by mitochondrial proteins associated with energy metabolism and apoptosis in aged rats. 11Nitrate δ^(15)N and δ^(18)O evidence for active biological transformation in the Changjiang Estuary and the adjacent East China Sea显示文摘The Changjiang Estuary has been considered as one of the most polluted estuaries in the world due to high nitrate (NO-3) input, especially in spring and summer. In this study, δ15N and δ18O of NO-3 , along with other chemical parameters in this area, were measured in spring to evaluate NO-3 biogeochemical processes. A simple two end-members mixing model was used to examine the relative contribution of the Changjiang River Diluted Water and marine water to NO-3 sources in the Changjiang Estuary and the adjacent East China Sea. The isotopic signals show that NO-3 behaved relatively and conservatively in Transect F and Transect P where assimilation was weak possibly due to vertical mixing, while active assimilation and weak nitrification occurred in Transect D. Spatial difference in assimilation was indicated by the~1:1 enrichment of δ15N and δ18O in the three transects, while spatial difference in nitrification was reflected by deviations of δ15 N and δ18O from assimilation line. 12Tribological and economic evaluation of recycled mineral lubricating oils显示文摘Seven kinds of used mineral lubricating oils,including hydraulic oils,film bearing oils,steam turbine oil and gear oils,were recycled by reclamation and adding additives.Physical and chemical properties of the recycled oils were measured and their lubrication performances were evaluated by the original and modified four-ball testers.Worn surfaces were analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Raman microscope.The recycling costs of burning,re-refined and refortified were estimated.Results showed that physical and chemical properties of the refortified oils were improved effectively and became in the industrial access standard.With the different friction materials under different loads,refortified oils provided excellent lubrication performances,much better than those of fresh oils.Because of additives replenished,the different lubrication films could form on the worn surfaces.A rough financial calculation revealed that the refortification process could produce the most economic value among the three methods.LIU JianFang GU KaLi DUAN HaiTao ZHAO Yuan LI Jian 2013Science China(Technological Sciences)2013,56,12:4
13Application of long-chain alkenones and U_(37)~k values for paleotemperature estimation in the Arctic Chukchi Sea-Bering Sea area显示文摘Long-chain alkenones were detected in samples of sea surface sediments from the Chukchi Sea and the Bering Sea areas, the Arctic Pole. The analysis result indicates that C37:3 methylketone is predominate in the long-chain alkenones from the Chukchi and Bering Sea sediments. The abundance of C37 to C39 unsaturated alkenones changes in an order of C37 > C38 > C39. Based on C37 /C38 ratio, the detected organism precursors of the long-chain alkenones are mainly coccolithophrid (Emiliania huxleyi). By the calibration relationship between U37k and U37k indices, the sea surface paleotemperature in these seas is estimated. 14Motor oil condition evaluation based on on-board diagnostic system显示文摘The condition of the motor oil in civilian cars is difficult to monitor;hence,we propose a method to evaluate the degree of degradation of motor oil using an on‐board diagnostic(OBD)system.Three civilian cars and four motor oils(containing mineral oils and synthetic oils)were subjected to five groups of road tests under urban traffic and high‐way conditions.The operation information,oil service time,mileage,engine operation time,idle time of the engine,and number of start‐ups of the engine were obtained using the proposed OBD system.Physiochemical properties and changes in the components of motor oils during road tests were analyzed in laboratory.The theoretical model of the comprehensive indicators of driving parameters and oil properties were established.The proposed method was successfully applied to different cars,motor oils,and operating conditions in road tests.All the theoretical models had high accuracy and precision.Herein,we provide a method to monitor the oil condition with real‐time driving parameters and provide a reference for end users to change their motor oil reasonably.Lei WEI Haitao DUAN Dan JIA Yongliang JIN Song CHEN Lian LIU Jianfang LIU Xianming SUN Jian LI 2020Friction2020,8,1:3

16Pathogenesis and Immunogenicity of an Avian H9N2 Influenza Virus Isolated from Human显示文摘Objective To investigate the pathogenesis and immunogenicity of H9N2 influenza virus A/Guangzhou/333/99 (a reassortant of G1 and G9 viruses isolated from a female patient in 1999) in a mouse model of infection.Methods Mice were infected with increasing virus titers.Viral load in the lungs and trachea was determined by EID50 assay.Pulmonary histopathology was assessed by hematoxylin‐eosin staining.Anti‐HI antibody titers and T‐cell responses to viral HA were determined by ELISPOT and confirmed by flow cytometry.Results Mice presented a mild syndrome after intranasal infection with A/Guangzhou/333/99 (H9N2) influenza virus.Virus was detected in the trachea and lungs of mice harvested on days 3,6,and 9 post‐infection.A T‐cell response to viral HA was detected on day 6 and H9 HA‐specific CD 4+ T‐cells predominated.Seroconversion was detected after 14 days and antibody persisted for at least 28 weeks.Conclusion Our results suggest that H9N2 (A/Guangzhou/333/99) can replicate in the murine respiratory tract without prior adaptation,and both humoral and cell‐mediated immunity play an important role in the immune response.LIU LiQi Li Zi ZHOU JianFang ZHU Yun DONG Jie ZHAO Xiang GUO JunFeng SHU YueLong 2011Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2011,24,5:2
17Bio-Organic Geochemistry research in China: Advances,opportunities and challenges显示文摘The discipline of 'Bio-Organic Geochemistry' is a cross research field between biogeochemistry and traditional organic geochemistry, which focuses on geochemical processes related to the biosynthesis of organic molecules(particularly lipids) by(micro) organisms, organic matter production by primary producers, degradation of organic matter by microbial processes recorded by retainable lipid biomarkers, and organic proxies for studies of paleo-climate, paleo-environments, paleoecology and Earth evolution. This field aims to go beyond the traditional petroleum-oriented Organic Geochemistry by integrating with biogeochemical concepts concerned mostly with biomolecules from cellular material such as DNA and lipids. A formal Chinese organization in Bio-Organic Geochemistry was established in 2012 when the first conference was held in Guangzhou. This organization has witnessed rapid growth over the past six years with focused research addressing organic proxies in paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental applications, with particular rapid development in glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers-derived proxies. Most progresses in China so far are made following or paralleling the international trend in biogeochemical studies. Things have begun to change with China's ambitious initiatives in several bio-geo programs such as the Ocean Deep Drilling Program of China, the Microbial Hydrosphere Program, the Deep Carbon Observatory, and the Microbiome Program. 18Distribution of Asbestos Enterprises and Asbestosis Cases--China, 1997−2019显示文摘What is already known on this topic?Asbestos is classified as a Class I Carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer(IARC)because exposure causes mesothelioma and lung cancer in addition to asbestosis and plaques.So far,asbestos has been banned in 67 countries,but chrysotile,a commonly encountered form of asbestos,is still widely used in China and most developing countries.Most asbestos-caused cancers are not reported,recorded,and compensated in many countries.What is added by this report?Enterprises manufacturing asbestos products have been migrating from economically developed Eastern China to relatively underdeveloped central and western regions between 2010 and 2019.Asbestosis cases reported in Tianjin,Beijing,Shandong,Xinjiang,Gansu,Qinghai,and Sichuan accounted for a large proportion of the total cases in China,which was inconsistent with the distribution of asbestos-related enterprises(AREs).The reported asbestosis cases versus total pneumoconiosis cases declined from 2.81%to 0.39%from 2006–2017,and this proportion reached 0.69%in 2018.What are the implications for public health practice?Robust occupational and environmental health assessments and reporting are needed to define the epidemiology of asbestos-related lung diseases,and management of using asbestos and existing products containing asbestos need strengthening and follow-up.Enterprises should be encouraged to use safer substitutes and gradually ban asbestos materials in China.Mingfeng Chen Huanqiang Wang Jianfang Zhang Chen Yu Weidong Liu Yunhao Xu 2020China CDC weekly2020,2,18:2
19FTIR Spectroscopy in Cultural Heritage Studies: Non-destructive Analysis of Chinese Handmade Papers显示文摘Chinese handmade papers have been the carriers of paper-based documents, paintings and calligraphies, which are of great importance for historical and cultural heritage studies. This research developed the attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared(ATR-FTIR) spectroscopic technique for the analysis of Chinese handmade papers. The test was applied to Chinese handmade papers taken from bark, hemp and bamboo groups, followed by papers from ancient books and arts collected in library and museum. Our study indicated tliat FTIR was an efficient analytical method to identify fiber types of library/museum papers of unknown origin. Moreover, information about degree of crystallinity and state of deterioration of cellulosic fibers was learned from FTIR spectra. 20Heterologous expression of Hp BHY and Cr BKT increases heat tolerance in Physcomitrella patens显示文摘Heat stress can restrict plant growth,development,and crop yield.As essential plant antioxidants,carotenoids play significant roles in plant stress resistance.b-carotene hydroxylase(BHY)and b-carotene ketolase(BKT),which catalyze the conversions of b-carotene to zeaxanthin and b-carotene to canthaxanthin,respectively,are key enzymes in the carotenoid biosynthetic pathway,but little is known about their potential functions in stress resistance.Here,we investigated the roles of b-carotene hydroxylase and b-carotene ketolase during heat stress in Physcomitrella patens through expressing a b-carotene ketolase gene from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii(Cr BKT)and a b-carotene hydroxylase gene from Haematococcus pluvialis(Hp BHY)in the moss P.patens.In transgenic moss expressing these genes,carotenoids content increased(especially lutein content),and heat stress tolerance increased,with reduced leafy tissue necrosis.To investigate the mechanism of this heat stress resistance,we measured various physiological indicators and found a lower malondialdehyde level,higher peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities,and higher endogenous abscisic acid and salicylate content in the transgenic plants in response to high-temperature stress.These results demonstrate that Cr BKT and Hp BHY increase plant heat stress resistance through the antioxidant and damage repair metabolism,which is related to abscisic acid and salicylate signaling.Jianfang He Ping Li Heqiang Huo Lina Liu Ting Tang Mingxia He Junchao Huang Li Liu 2019Plant Diversity2019,41,4:2
