1Carbon pools and fluxes in the China Seas and adjacent oceans显示文摘The China Seas include the South China Sea, East China Sea, Yellow Sea, and Bohai Sea. Located off the Northwestern Pacific margin, covering 4700000 km^2 from tropical to northern temperate zones, and including a variety of continental margins/basins and depths, the China Seas provide typical cases for carbon budget studies. The South China Sea being a deep basin and part of the Western Pacific Warm Pool is characterized by oceanic features; the East China Sea with a wide continental shelf, enormous terrestrial discharges and open margins to the West Pacific, is featured by strong cross-shelf materials transport; the Yellow Sea is featured by the confluence of cold and warm waters; and the Bohai Sea is a shallow semiclosed gulf with strong impacts of human activities. Three large rivers, the Yangtze River, Yellow River, and Pearl River, flow into the East China Sea, the Bohai Sea, and the South China Sea, respectively. The Kuroshio Current at the outer margin of the Chinese continental shelf is one of the two major western boundary currents of the world oceans and its strength and position directly affect the regional climate of China. These characteristics make the China Seas a typical case of marginal seas to study carbon storage and fluxes. This paper systematically analyzes the literature data on the carbon pools and fluxes of the Bohai Sea,Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea, including different interfaces(land-sea, sea-air, sediment-water, and marginal sea-open ocean) and different ecosystems(mangroves, wetland, seagrass beds, macroalgae mariculture, coral reefs, euphotic zones, and water column). Among the four seas, the Bohai Sea and South China Sea are acting as CO_2 sources, releasing about0.22 and 13.86–33.60 Tg C yr^(-1) into the atmosphere, respectively, whereas the Yellow Sea and East China Sea are acting as carbon sinks, absorbing about 1.15 and 6.92–23.30 Tg C yr^(-1) of atmospheric CO_2, respectively. Overall, if only the CO_2 exchange at the sea-air interface is considered, the Chinese marginal seas appear to be a source of atmospheric CO_2, with a net release of 6.01–9.33 Tg C yr^(-1), mainly from the inputs of rivers and adjacent oceans. The riverine dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) input into the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea are 5.04, 14.60, and 40.14 Tg C yr^(-1),respectively. The DIC input from adjacent oceans is as high as 144.81 Tg C yr^(-1), significantly exceeding the carbon released from the seas to the atmosphere. In terms of output, the depositional fluxes of organic carbon in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea are 2.00, 3.60, 7.40, and 5.92 Tg C yr^(-1), respectively. The fluxes of organic carbon from the East China Sea and South China Sea to the adjacent oceans are 15.25–36.70 and 43.93 Tg C yr^(-1), respectively. The annual carbon storage of mangroves, wetlands, and seagrass in Chinese coastal waters is 0.36–1.75 Tg C yr^(-1), with a dissolved organic carbon(DOC) output from seagrass beds of up to 0.59 Tg C yr^(-1). Removable organic carbon flux by Chinese macroalgae mariculture account for 0.68 Tg C yr^(-1) and the associated POC depositional and DOC releasing fluxes are 0.14 and 0.82 Tg C yr^(-1), respectively. Thus, in total, the annual output of organic carbon, which is mainly DOC, in the China Seas is 81.72–104.56 Tg C yr^(-1). The DOC efflux from the East China Sea to the adjacent oceans is 15.00–35.00 Tg C yr^(-1). The DOC efflux from the South China Sea is 31.39 Tg C yr^(-1). 2Carbon sequestration processes and mechanisms in coastal mariculture environments in China显示文摘China is the global leader in mariculture production. Increasing sequestered marine carbon(also known as blue carbon) via mariculture activities is a promising approach for mitigating climate change and promoting the development of a low-carbon economy. Mariculture blue carbon is also considered an important component of China's 'sea granary'. In addition to shellfish and macroalgae yields, which represent carbon removed from mariculture environment, blue carbon also includes other important components, which have been largely neglected in the past, such as the carbon transformed by microbes,dissolved organic carbon(mainly referred to as recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon), and sedimentary particulate carbon. Hence,from different aspects, a comprehensive study on the formation processes and mechanisms of carbon sequestration is of great significance for comprehensively unveiling the carbon sequestration capability in coastal mariculture environment, which will contribute to the sustainable development of the fishery economy and construction of an ecological civilization. 3Distribution of Microbial Populations and Their Relationship with Environmental Variables in the North Yellow Sea,China显示文摘In order to understand the large-scale spatial distribution characteristics of picoplankton,nanophytoplankton and virio-plankton and their relationship with environmental variables in coastal and offshore waters,flow cytometry(FCM) was used to ana-lyze microbial abundance of samples collected in summer from four depths at 36 stations in the North Yellow Sea(NYS).The data revealed spatial heterogeneity in microbial populations in the offshore and near-shore waters of the NYS during the summer.For the surface layer,picoeukaryotes were abundant in the near-shore waters,Synechococcus was abundant in the offshore areas,and bacte-rial and viral abundances were high in the near-shore waters around the Liaodong peninsula.In the near-shore waters,no significant vertical variation of picophytoplankton(0.2-2μm) abundance was found.However,the nanophytoplankton abundance was higher in the upper layers(from the surface to 10 m depth) than in the bottom layer.For the offshore waters,both pico-and nanophytoplankton(2-20μm) abundance decreased sharply with depth in the North Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass(NYSCWM).But,for the vertical dis-tribution of virus and bacteria abundance,no significant variation was observed in both near-shore and offshore waters.Autotrophic microbes were more sensitive to environmental change than heterotrophic microbes and viruses.Viruses showed a positive correla-tion with bacterial abundance,suggesting that the bacteriophage might be prominent for virioplankton(about 0.45μm) in summer in the NYS and that viral abundance might play an important role in microbial loop functions.BAI Xiaoge WANG Min LIANG Yantao ZHANG Zhifeng WANG Fang JIANG Xuejiao 2012Journal of Ocean University of China2012,11,1:5
4Relationship Between Organ Masses and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) in Tree Sparrows (Passer montanus)显示文摘BMR(basal metabolic rate),body mass and organ masses of tree sparrows(Passer montanus) were measured to analyze the correlation between organ masses and BMR in tree sparrows,and to evaluate the underlying physiological causes of difference in BMR. Adult tree sparrows were live-trapped by mist net in Qiqihar City,Heilongjiang Province(47 29'N,124 02'E) . The closed circuit respirometer was used to measure the metabolic rate(MR) ,and controlled the ambient temperature by using a water bath(±0.5℃) . Body masses were measured to the nearest 0.01 g before and after BMR measurements with a Sartorius balance(model BT25S) . The mean value was recorded as body mass. Wet and dry masses of several organs were measured,too. BMR was(4.276± 0.385) mL O 2 /(g h) and mean body mass was(18.522±0.110) g. Since not all the variables were normal distributed,a log 10-transformation of those variables was employed to linearize them,prior to analyses. Simple regression analyses indicated that most organ masses showed a significant high correlation with body mass. Both the small intestine and rectum masses were notable exception to that trend. The body-mass-adjusted residual analysis showed that only the kidney wet mass,brain mass,stomach mass,small mass and rectum wet mass correlated with BMR. In addition,correlations between several organ masses and BMR were observed. Because of the inter-correlations of organ masses,a principal component analysis(PCA) was performed to redefine the morphological variability. The first four components whose eigenvalues were greater than 1 could explain 75.2% variance of BMR. The first component,whose proportion reached 30.19%,was affected mainly by stomach mass,small intestine mass and rectum mass. 5Understanding oxygen electrochemistry in aprotic Li-O_2 batteries显示文摘In the past decade, the aprotic lithium-oxygen(Li-O_2) battery has generated a great deal of interest because theoretically it can store more energy than today's lithium-ion batteries. Although considerable research efforts have been devoted to the R&D of this potentially disruptive technology, many scientific and engineering obstacles still remain to be addressed before a practical device could be realized. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the fundamental understanding of the O_2 electrochemistry in Li-O_2 batteries, including the O_2 reduction to Li_2O_2 on discharge and the reverse Li_2 O_2 oxidation on recharge and factors that exert strong influences on the redox of O_2/Li_2O_2. 6A drug-loaded composite coating to improve osteogenic and antibacterial properties of Zn-1Mg porous scaffolds as biodegradable bone implants显示文摘Zinc(Zn)alloy porous scaffolds produced by additive manufacturing own customizable structures and biodegradable functions,having a great application potential for repairing bone defect.In this work,a hydroxyapatite(HA)/polydopamine(PDA)composite coating was constructed on the surface of Zn-1Mg porous scaffolds fabricated by laser powder bed fusion,and was loaded with a bioactive factor BMP2 and an antibacterial drug vancomycin.The microstructure,degradation behavior,biocompatibility,antibacterial performance and osteogenic activities were systematically investigated.Compared with as-built Zn-1Mg scaffolds,the rapid increase of Zn2+,which resulted to the deteriorated cell viability and osteogenic differentiation,was inhibited due to the physical barrier of the composite coating.In vitro cellular and bacterial assay indicated that the loaded BMP2 and vancomycin considerably enhanced the cytocompatibility and antibacterial performance.Significantly improved osteogenic and antibacterial functions were also observed according to in vivo implantation in the lateral femoral condyle of rats.The design,influence and mechanism of the composite coating were discussed accordingly.It was concluded that the additively manufactured Zn-1Mg porous scaffolds together with the composite coating could modulate biodegradable performance and contribute to effective promotion of bone recovery and antibacterial function.Zhenbao Zhang Aobo Liu Jiadong Fan Menglin Wang Jiabao Dai Xiang Jin Huanze Deng Xuan Wang Yijie Liang Haixia Li Yantao Zhao Peng Wen Yanfeng Li 2023Bioactive Materials2023,,9:2

8Modelling marine DOC degradation time scales显示文摘INTRODUCTION Marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is formed of a large number of highly diverse molecules.Depending on the environmental conditions,a fraction of these molecules may become progressively resistant to bacterial degradation and accumulate in the ocean for extended time scales.This longlived DOC (the so-called recalcitrant DOC,RDOC)is thought to play animportant role in the global carbon cycle by sequestering carbon into the ocean interior and potentially affecting the climate.Despite this,RDOC formation is underrepresented in climate models. 14The effect of iron on the preservation of organic carbon in marine sediments and its implications for carbon sequestration显示文摘Marine sediments are the most significant reservoir of organic carbon(OC)in Earth′s surface system.Iron,a crucial component of the marine biogeochemical cycle,has a considerable impact on marine ecology and carbon cycling.Understanding the effect of iron on the preservation of OC in marine sediments is essential for comprehending biogeochemical processes of carbon and climate change.This review summarizes the methods for characterizing the content and structure of iron-bound OC and explores the influencing mechanism of iron on OC preservation in marine sediments from two aspects:the selective preservation of OC by reactive iron minerals(iron oxides and iron sulfides)and iron redox processes.The selective preservation of sedimentary OC is influenced by different types of reactive iron minerals,OC reactivity,and functional groups.The iron redox process has dual effects on the preservation and degradation of OC.By considering sedimentary records of iron-bound OC across diverse marine environments,the role of iron in long-term preservation of OC and its significance for carbon sequestration are illustrated.Future research should focus on identifying effective methods for extracting reactive iron,the effect of diverse functional groups and marine sedimentary environments on the selective preservation of OC,and the mediation of microorganisms.Such work will help elucidate the influencing mechanisms of iron on the long-term burial and preservation of OC and explore its potential application in marine carbon sequestration to maximize its role in achieving carbon neutrality.Limin HU Yuhan JI Bin ZHAO Xiting LIU Jiazong DU Yantao LIANG Peng YAO 2023Science China Earth Sciences2023,66,9:0
15Genomic diversity and ecological distribution of marine Pseudoalteromonas phages显示文摘Pseudoalteromonas,with a ubiquitous distribution,is one of the most abundant marine bacterial genera.It is especially abundant in the deep sea and polar seas,where it has been found to have a broad metabolic capacity and unique co-existence strategies with other organisms.However,only a few Pseudoalteromonas phages have so far been isolated and investigated and their genomic diversity and distribution patterns are still unclear.Here,the genomes,taxonomic features and distribution patterns of Pseudoalteromonas phages are systematically analyzed,based on the microbial and viral genomes and metagenome datasets.A total of 143 complete or nearly complete Pseudoalteromonas-associated phage genomes(PSAPGs)were identifed,including 34 Pseudoalteromonas phage isolates,24 proviruses,and 85 Pseudoalteromonas-associated uncultured viral genomes(UViGs);these were assigned to 47 viral clusters at the genus level.Many integrated proviruses(n=24)and flamentous phages were detected(n=32),suggesting the prevalence of viral lysogenic life cycle in Pseudoalteromonas.PSAPGs encoded 66 types of 249 potential auxiliary metabolic genes(AMGs)relating to peptidases and nucleotide metabolism.They may also participate in marine biogeochemical cycles through the manipulation of the metabolism of their hosts,especially in the phosphorus and sulfur cycles.Siphoviral and flamentous PSAPGs were the predominant viral lineages found in polar areas,while some myoviral and siphoviral PSAPGs encoding transposase were more abundant in the deep sea.This study has expanded our understanding of the taxonomy,phylogenetic and ecological scope of marine Pseudoalteromonas phages and deepens our knowledge of viral impacts on Pseudoalteromonas.It will provide a baseline for the study of interactions between phages and Pseudoalteromonas in the ocean.Kaiyang Zheng Yue Dong Yantao Liang Yundan Liu Xinran Zhang Wenjing Zhang Ziyue Wang Hongbing Shao Yeong Yik Sung Wen Jye Mok Li Lian Wong Andrew McMinn Min Wang 2023Marine Life Science & Technology2023,5,2:0
