Proanthocyanidins Inhibit Seed Germination by Maintaining a High Level of Abscisic Acid in Arabidopsis thaliana显示文摘Proanthocyanidins (PAs) are the main products of the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway in seeds, but their biological function during seed germination is still unclear. We observed that seed germination is delayed with the increase of exogenous PA concentration in Arabidopsis. A similar inhibitory effect occurred in peeled Brassica napus seeds, which was observed by measuring radicle elongation. Using abscisic acid (ABA), a biosynthetic and metabolic inhibitor, and gene expression analysis by real-time polymerase chain reaction, we found that the inhibitory effect of PAs on seed germination is due to their promotion of ABA via de novo biogenesis, rather than by any inhibition of its degradation. Consistent with the relationship between PA content and ABA accumulation in seeds, PA-deficient mutants maintain a lower level of ABA compared with wild-types during germination. Our data suggest that PA distribution in the seed coat can act as a doorkeeper to seed germination. PA regulation of seed germination is mediated by the ABA signaling pathway. | Liguo Jia Qiuyu Wu Nenghui Ye Rui Liu Lu Shi Weifeng Xu Hui Zhi A. N. M. | 2 | Nonvolatile waveguide transmission tuning with electrically-driven ultra-small GST phase-change material显示文摘Low-power reconfigurable optical circuits are highly demanded to satisfy a variety of different applications. Conventional electro-optic and thermo-optic refractive index tuning methods in silicon photonics are not suitable for reconfiguration of optical circuits due to their high static power consumption and volatility. We propose and demonstrate a nonvolatile tuning method by utilizing the reversible phase change property of GST integrated on top of the silicon waveguide. The phase change is enabled by applying electrical pulses to the lm-sized GST active region in a sandwich structure. The experimental results show that the optical transmission of the silicon waveguide can be tuned by controlling the phase state of GST. | Hanyu Zhang Linjie Zhou Jian Xu Ningning Wang Hao Hu Liangjun Lu B. | 5 | Population Genetic Structure of the Medicinal Plant Vitex rotundifolia in China: Implications for its Use and Conservation显示文摘Vitex rotundifolia L. is an important plant species used in traditional Chinese medicine. For its efficient use and conservation, genetic diversity and clonal variation of V. rotundifolia populations in China were investigated using inter-simple sequence repeat markers. Fourteen natural populations were included to estimate genetic diversity, and a large population with 135 individuals was used to analyze clonal variation and fine-scale spatial genetic structure. The overall genetic diversity (GD) of V. rotundifolia populations in China was moderate (GD = 0.190), with about 40% within-population variation. Across all populations surveyed, the average within-population diversity was moderate (P = 22.6%; GD = 0.086). A relatively high genetic differentiation (Gst = 0.587) among populations was detected based on the analysis of molecular variance data. Such characteristics of V. rotundifolia are likely attributed to its sexual/asexual reproduction and limited gene flow. The genotypic diversity (D = 0.992) was greater than the average values of a clonal plant, indicating its significant reproduction through seedlings. Spatial autocorrelation analysis showed a clear within-population structure with gene clusters of approximately 20 m. Genetic diversity patterns of V. rotundifolia in China provide a useful guide for its efficient use and conservation by selecting particular populations displaying greater variation that may contain required medicinal compounds, and by sampling individuals in a population at >20 m spatial intervals to avoid collecting individuals with identical or similar genotypes. | Yuan Hu Yu Zhu Qiao-Yan Zhang Hai-Liang Xin Lu-Ping Qin Bao-Rong Lu Khalid Rahman Han-Chen Zheng | 2008 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2008,50,9: | 1

De novo mutation of NAXE(APOAIBP)-related early-onset progressive encephalopathy with brain edema and/or leukoencephalopathy-1:A case report显示文摘BACKGROUND Early-onset progressive encephalopathy with brain edema and/or leukoencephalopathy-1(PEBEL1)is a rare autosomal recessive severe neurometabolic disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics and genetic pathogenicity of PEBEL1 caused by rare NAXE(or APOA1BP)-related defects.CASE SUMMARY The patient was a girl aged 2 years and 10 mo.She was hospitalized due to walking disorder for>40 d.The clinical manifestations were ataxia, motor function regression, hypotonia, and eyelid ptosis.Within 1 mo of hospitalization, she developed sigh breathing, respiratory failure, cerebellar edema and brain hernia, and finally she died.Changes were found in cranial imaging, including cerebellar edema accompanied by symmetrical myelopathy.Through whole exome sequencing,we detected NAXE compound heterozygous variation(NM 144772.3)c.733A>C(p.Lys245Gln,dbSNP:rs770023429)and novel variation c.370G>T(p.Gly124Cys)in the germline gene. The clinical features and core phenotypes of this case were consistent with 18 previously reported cases of PEBEL1.CONCLUSION This is the first case of NAXE-related PEBEL1 with severe clinical phenotype in China' Mainland. The p.Gly124Cys mutation discovered in this case has enriched the pathogenic variation spectrum of NAXE. | Le Ding Ting-Ting Huang Guo-Huan Ying Shang-Yu Wang Hai-Feng Xu Hao Qian Faiza Rahman Xiao-Peng Lu Hu Guo Guo Zheng Gang Zhang | 2023 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2023,11,14: | 0
Tackling global health security by building an academic community for One Health action显示文摘Background One Health approach is crucial to tackling complex global public health threats at the interface of humans, animals, and the environment. As outlined in the One Health Joint Plan of Action, the international One Health community includes stakeholders from different sectors. Supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, an academic community for One Health action has been proposed with the aim of promoting the understanding and real-world implementation of One Health approach and contribution towards the Sustainable Development Goals for a healthy planet.Main text The proposed academic community would contribute to generating high-quality scientific evidence, distilling local experiences as well as fostering an interconnected One Health culture and mindset, among various stakeholders on different levels and in all sectors. The major scope of the community covers One Health governance, zoonotic diseases, food security, antimicrobial resistance, and climate change along with the research agenda to be developed. The academic community will be supported by two committees, including a strategic consultancy committee and a scientific steering committee, composed of influential scientists selected from the One Health information database. A workplan containing activities under six objectives is proposed to provide research support, strengthen local capacity, and enhance global participation. Conclusions The proposed academic community for One Health action is a crucial step towards enhancing communication, coordination, collaboration, and capacity building for the implementation of One Health. By bringing eminent global experts together, the academic community possesses the potential to generate scientific evidence and provide advice to local governments and international organizations, enabling the pursuit of common goals, collaborative policies, and solutions to misaligned interests. | Xiao-Xi Zhang Xin-Chen Li Qi-Yu Zhang Jing-Shu Liu Le-Fei Han Zohar Lederman Janna M.Schurer Patrícia Poeta Md.Tanvir Rahman Shi-Zhu Li Kokouvi Kassegne Kun Yin Yong-Zhang Zhu Shang Xia Lu He Qin-Qin Hu Le-Shan Xiu Jing-Bo Xue Han-Qing Zhao Xi-Han Wangv Logan Wu Xiao-Kui Guo Zhao-Jun Wang Bernhard Schwartländer Ming-Hui Ren Xiao-Nong Zhou | 2023 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2023,12,4: | 0
Non-escaping frost tolerant QTL linked genetic loci at reproductive stage in six wheat DH populations显示文摘Reproductive stage frost poses a major constraint for wheat production in countries such as Australia. However, little progress has been made in identifying key genes to overcome the constraint. In the present study,a severe frost event hit two large-scale field trials consisting of six doubled haploid(DH)wheat populations at reproductive stage(young microspore stage)in Western Australia, leading to the identification of 30 robust frost QTL on 17 chromosomes. The major 18 QTL with the phenotype variation over 9.5%were located on 13 chromosomes including 2 A,2 B,2 D,3 A,4 A,4 B,4 D,5 A,5 D,6 D,7 A,7 B and7 D.Most frost QTL were closely linked to the QTL of anthesis, maturity,Zadok stages as well as linked to anthesis related genes.Out of those, six QTL were repetitively detected on the homologous regions on 2 B,4 B,4 D,5 A,5 D,7 A in more than two populations. Results showed that the frost damage is associated with alleles of Vrn-A1 a,Vrn-D1 a,Rht-B1 b,Rht-D1 b,and the high copy number of Ppd-B1.However,anthesis QTL and anthesis related genes of Vrn-B1 a and Ta FT3-1 B on chromosomes 5 B and 1 B did not lead to frost damage, indicating that these early-flowering phenotype related genes are compatible with frost tolerance and thus can be utilised in breeding. Our results also indicate that wild-type alleles Rht-B1 a and Rht-D1 a can be used when breeding for frost-tolerant varieties without delaying flowering time. | Jingjuan Zhang MD Shahidul Islam Yun Zhao Masood Anwar Zaid Alhabbar Maoyun She Rongchang Yang Angela Juhasz Guixiang Tang Jiansheng Chen Hang Liu Yanjie Jiang Shengnan Zhai Xin Hu Junkang Rong Yingquan Zhang Yebo Qin Qier Liu Zitong Yu Yujuan Zhang Sadegh Balotf Mirza Dowla Sonia Afrin Nandita Roy Md Resad Mallik Md Atik Us Saieed Shanjida Rahman Nigarin Sultana Sarah Al-Sheikh Ahmed Chris Florides Kefei Chen Darshan Sharma Nathan Height Ben Biddulph Meiqin Lu Jorge EMayer Wujun Ma | 2022 | The Crop Journal2022,10,1: | 0
Comparative Study of the Magnetic Properties and Glass-Forming Ability of Fe-Based Bulk Metallic Glass with Minor Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu Additions显示文摘Fe_(43)M_5Cr_(15)Mo_(14)C_(15)B_6Y_2 (M=Mn,Co,Ni,and Cu in at.%)bulk metallic glasses(BMGs)are synthesized using the suction casting technique, and the glass-forming ability(GFA),microstructure, and thermal and magnetic properties of these glasses are extensively examined using X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimeter, and vibrating sample magnetometer techniques.Among the four BMG alloys,Fe_(43)Ni_5Cr_(15)Mo_(14)C_(15)B_6Y_2 exhibits the lowest coercivity and the highest saturation magnetization,Curie temperature, effective magnetic moment, and GFA.By contrast,Fe_(43)Mn_5Cr_(15)Mo_(14)C_(15)B_6Y_2 presents the poorest magnetic properties, such as the highest coercivity and the lowest saturation magnetization,Curie temperature, and effective magnetic moment.Fe_(43)Cu_5Cr_(15)Mo_(14)C_(15)B_6Y_2 demonstrates the lowest thermal stability and GFA.The observed thermal, structural, and magnetic properties of these BMG alloys are discussed in terms of the kinetics of BMG synthesization and the formation of different ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, and antiferromagnetic phases. | Md Anisur Rahman Yun-Zhuo Lu Qiang Luo Shou-Jiang Qu Feng-Xia Ye Yi-Xuan Wu Jun Shen | 2016 | Acta Metallurgica Sinica(English Letters)2016,29,9: | 0
