| 1 | Dust storms and loess accumulation on the Tibetan Plateau: A case study of dust event on 4 March 2003 in Lhasa显示文摘Whether the Tibetan Plateau is a significant dust source area is of great importance, because this is re-lated to the understanding of sources, accumulation and environmental effects of dusts on the Tibetan Plateau and in the Far East-Pacific Ocean regions as well as to the evolution of coupling of the Tibetan Plateau and atmosphere-ocean- continent exchange. Synoptic dynamics and remote sensing tracing of a dust storm on 3 to 5 March, 2003 in Lhasa on South Tibet demonstrate that the Tibetan Plateau possesses all factors and conditions of generating dust storms. Accom-panied with this dust storm is a strong ascending stream on the Plateau which has raised various sizes of dust particles into different levels. The lifted coarse particles were largely fallen down and accumulated as loess on the eastern Tibetan Plateau, and the fine particles were translated by the west-erly jet and subsided in the northern Pacific Ocean. The spa-tial-temporal distribution of dust-storms between years 1961 and 2000 on the Plateau shows that dust-storms mainly occur in winter and early spring with high frequency, and the path of dust storm moves gradually from south to north, which is closely coupled with the northward moving of the westerly jet from winter to spring over the Tibetan Plateau. | 3 | Effect of aluminium dust on secondary organic aerosol formation in m-xylene/NO_x photo-oxidation显示文摘As an important anthropogenic volatile organic compound(VOC), m-xylene has attracted numerous attentions due to its potential in secondary organic aerosol(SOA) formation. In this study, effects of aluminium dust seeds(boehmite and alumina) on SOA yield and aerosol size in m-xylene/NOx photo-oxidation were investigated in a 2 m3 smog chamber at 30°C and 50% relative humidity. Compared to the seed-free system, the presence of aluminium seeds resulted in an increase in the SOA yield, and also enhanced the O3 concentration in the chamber. The photolysis of O3 is a major source of OH radical, which is the most important oxidant of m-xylene. The increase in O3 concentration could result in the generation of more OH radicals, and finally contribute to the SOA formation. Seed particles influence the SOA size mainly by acting as condensation nuclei. Semi-volatile organic compounds(SVOCs) were condensed onto these nuclei, resulting in the increase in SOA size. | 13 | Influence of High Relative Humidity on Secondary Organic Carbon: Observations at a Background Site in East China显示文摘To investigate the impacts of relative humidity(RH) on secondary organic aerosol(SOA) concentrations and chemical reactions, the carbonaceous aerosol components [i.e., organic carbon(OC) and element carbon(EC)] were quantified in daily PM2.5 samples collected at a background site in East China during summer 2015. Based on the method of EC-tracer, the concentration of secondary organic carbon(SOC) demonstrated an obvious negative relationship with RH higher than 60%. Moreover, the ratio of SOC/EC also exhibited obvious decreasing trends with increasing RH, indicating negative effects for chemical production of SOA under high RH conditions. Due to high RH,photochemistry was weakened, gaseous oxidant concentrations was lowered(e.g., significantly decreased O3 levels),and the production rates of SOA were relatively low. On the other hand, because of more water uptake under higher RH conditions, the aerosol droplet acidity was reduced and enhancement of SOA formation by acidity was accordingly absent. In addition, high RH also plays an important role in changing viscosity of pre-existing aerosol coatings,which can affect reactive uptake yield of SOA. Overall, the results from this study imply that SOA production may be more associated with photochemical processes, while aqueous-phase chemistry is not very important for some SOA formation in a moist ambient environment. In the ambient atmosphere, oxidant concentrations, reaction rates,airborne species, etc., are highly variable. | 14 | Dual-labeled visual tracer system for topical drug delivery by nanoparticle-triggered P-glycoprotein silencing显示文摘Using nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems as enhancers is a robust strategy for transdermal delivery;however, the mechanisms by which these systems promote transdermal penetration are still unclear.Here, we fabricated a dual-labeled nano drug delivery system that allows discrete visualization of both the drug and the nanoparticle carrier. To comprehensively examine its potential mechanism, we investigated its effects on human epidermal keratinocyte Ha Ca T cells, including changes in cell membrane potential, intracellular Ca;concentration, and Ca;-ATPase activity. P-glycoprotein(P-gp) expression in nanoparticle-treated human dermal microvascular endothelial cells was detected by western blotting and immunofluorescence. Furthermore, the transdermal absorption and biodistribution of the dual-labeled nanoparticles were deeply investigated by skin permeability study in vitro and in vivo using fluorescence microscopy and in vivo imaging, respectively. In addition to reducing membrane potential, increasing the intracellular Ca;concentration, and decreasing Ca;-ATPase activity, our results indicate that the duallabeled nanoparticles can downregulate P-gp to promote transdermal absorption. Fluorescence and in vivo imaging visually demonstrated that the nanoparticle delivery system penetrated into the dermis through the stratum corneum.
