| 4 | Relative pollen productivities of typical steppe species in northern China and their potential in past vegetation reconstruction显示文摘The Relative Pollen Productivities(RPPs)of common steppe species are estimated using Extended R-value(ERV)model based on pollen analysis and vegetation survey of 30 surface soil samples from typical steppe area of northern China.Artemisia,Chenopodiaceae,Poaceae,Cyperaceae,and Asteraceae are the dominant pollen types in pollen assemblages,reflecting the typical steppe communities well.The five dominant pollen types and six common types(Thalictrum,Iridaceae,Potentilla,Ephedra,Brassicaceae,and Ulmus)have strong wind transport abilities;the estimated Relevant Source Area of Pollen(RSAP)is ca.1000 m when the sediment basin radius is set at 0.5 m.Ulmus,Artemisia,Brassicaceae,Chenopodiaceae,and Thalictrum have relative high RPPs;Poaceae,Cyperaceae,Potentilla,and Ephedra pollen have moderate RPPs;Asteraceae and Iridaceae have low RPPs.The reliability test of RPPs revealed that most of the RPPs are reliable in past vegetation reconstruction.However,the RPPs of Asteraceae and Iridaceae are obviously underestimated,and those of Poaceae,Chenopodiaceae,and Ephedra are either slightly underestimated or slightly overestimated,suggesting that those RPPs should be considered with caution.These RPPs were applied to estimating plant abundances for two fossil pollen spectra(from the Lake Bayanchagan and Lake Haoluku)covering the Holocene in typical steppe area,using the'Regional Estimates of Vegetation Abundance from Large Sites'(REVEALS)model.The RPPs-based vegetation reconstruction revealed that meadow-steppe dominated by Poaceae,Cyperaceae,and Artemisia plants flourished in this area before 6500–5600 cal yr BP,and then was replaced by present typical steppe. | XU QingHai CAO XianYong TIAN Fang ZHANG ShengRui LI YueCong LI ManYue LI Jie LIU YaoLiang LIANG Jian | 2014 | Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,6: | 13 |

| 7 | Modeling grassland net primary productivity and water-use efficiency along an elevational gradient of the Northern Tianshan Mountains显示文摘Mountainous ecosystems are considered highly sensitive and vulnerable to natural disasters and climatic changes.Therefore,quantifying the effects of elevation on grassland productivity to understand ecosystem-climate interactions is vital for mountainous ecosystems.Water-use efficiency(WUE)provides a useful index for understanding the metabolism of terrestrial ecosystems as well as for evaluating the degradation of grasslands.This paper explored net primary productivity(NPP)and WUE in grasslands along an elevational gradient ranging from 400 to 3,400 m asl in the northern Tianshan Mountains-southern Junggar Basin(TMJB),Xinjiang of China,using the Biome-BGC model.The results showed that:1)the NPP increased by 0.05 g C/(m2·a)with every increase of 1-m elevation,reached the maximum at the mid-high elevation(1,600 m asl),and then decreased by 0.06 g C/(m2·a)per 1-m increase in elevation;2)the grassland NPP was positively correlated with temperature in alpine meadow(AM,2,700-3,500 m asl),mid-mountain forest meadow(MMFM,1,650-2,700 m asl)and low-mountain dry grassland(LMDG,650-1,650 m asl),while positive correlations were found between NPP and annual precipitation in plain desert grassland(PDG,lower than 650 m asl);3)an increase(from 0.08 to 1.09 g C/(m2·a))in mean NPP for the grassland in TMJB under a real climate change scenario was observed from 1959 to 2009;and 4)remarkable differences in WUE were found among different elevations.In general,WUE increased with decreasing elevation,because water availability is lower at lower elevations;however,at elevations lower than 540 m asl,we did observe a decreasing trend of WUE with decreasing elevation,which may be due to the sharp changes in canopy cover over this gradient.Our research suggests that the NPP simulated by Biome-BGC is consistent with field data,and the modeling provides an opportunity to further evaluate interactions between environmental factors and ecosystem productivity. | QiFei HAN GePing LUO ChaoFan LI Hui YE YaoLiang CHEN | 2013 | Journal of Arid Land2013,5,3: | 5 |
| 8 | Abrupt vegetation shifts caused by gradual climate changes in central Asia during the Holocene显示文摘Understanding the response of ecosystems to past climate is critical for evaluating the impacts of future climate changes.A large-scale abrupt shift of vegetation in response to the Holocene gradual climate changes has been well documented for the Sahara-Sahel ecosystem. Whether such a non-linear response is of universal significance remains to be further addressed. Here,we examine the vegetation-climate relationships in central Asia based on a compilation of 38 high-quality pollen records. The results show that the Holocene vegetation experienced two major abrupt shifts, one in the early Holocene(Shift I, establishing shift) and another in the late Holocene(Shift II, collapsing shift), while the mid-Holocene vegetation remained rather stable. The timings of these shifts in different regions are asynchronous, which are not readily linkable with any known abrupt climate shifts,but are highly correlated with the local rainfalls. These new findings suggest that the observed vegetation shifts are attributable to the threshold effects of the orbital-induced gradual climate changes. During the early Holocene, the orbital-induced precipitation increase would have first reached the threshold for vegetation 'establishment' for moister areas, but significantly later for drier areas. In contrast, the orbital-induced precipitation decrease during the late Holocene would have first reached the threshold, and led to the vegetation 'collapse' for drier areas, but delayed for moister areas. The well-known 4.2 kyr BP drought event and human intervention would have also helped the vegetation collapses at some sites. These interpretations are strongly supported by our surface pollen-climate analyses and ecosystem simulations. Delay compensation by Carath ′eodory representation could achieve high interpolation accuracy while using the single channel sampling technique. Array extrapolation by Carath ′eodory representation reformulates and extends each snapshot, consequently extends the aperture of the original uniform linear array(ULA) by several times and provides a better realtime performance than the existing aperture extrapolation utilizing vector extrapolation based on the two dimensional autoregressive(2-D AR) model. The UWB linear frequency modulated(LFM) signal is used for simulation analysis. Based on a special case of combinatorial designs, our proposed method can construct a type of parity check matrix with greater column weight and better decoding performance. Combined with the characteristic of asymmetric quantum channel, we propose new method of sliding grill. Mother matrix and submatrix can be constructed. The null space of the parity-check matrix gives entanglement-assisted asymmetric quantum code. Tanner graph of the code has a girth of at least 6. Our proposed quantum code has higher code rate with the same error correction capability. | 13 | Exploring Tree Species Classification in Subtropical Regions with a Modified Hierarchy-Based Classifier Using High Spatial Resolution Multisensor Data显示文摘Tree species distribution is valuable for forest resource management.However,it is a challenge to classify tree species in subtropical regions due to complex landscapes and limitations of remote sensing data.The objective of this study was to propose a modified hierarchy-based classifier(MHBC)by optimizing the classification tree structures and variable selection method.Major steps to create an MHBC include automatic determination of classification tree structures based on the Z-score algorithm,selection and optimization of variables for each node,and classification using the optimized model.Experiments based on the fusion of Gaofen-1/Ziyuan-3 panchromatic(GF-1/ZY-3 PAN)and Sentinel-2 multispectral(MS)data indicated that(1)the MHBC provided overall classification accuracies of 85.19%for Gaofeng Forest Farm in China’s southern subtropical region and 94.4%for Huashi Township in China’s northern subtropical region,which had higher accuracies than random forest(RF)and classification and regression tree(CART);(2)critical variables for each class can be identified using the MHBC,and optimal variables of most nodes are spectral bands and vegetation indices;(3)compared to results from RF and CART,MHBC mainly improved the accuracies of the lower levels of classification tree structures(difficult classes to separate).The novelty in using MHBC is its simple and practical operation,easy-to-understand,and visualized variables that were selected in each node of the automatically constructed hierarchical trees.The robust performance of MHBC implies the potential to apply this approach to other sites for accurate classification of forest types. | Xiandie Jiang Shuai Zhao Yaoliang Chen Dengsheng Lu | 2022 | Journal of Remote Sensing2022,,1: | 1 |
